    Apparently the origin of the "-minx" suffix came from when Meffert was originally marketing the Pyraminx, he already had the pyramid thing going so he decided to keep an Egyptian theme and put "Sphinx" at the back of the name, and then that just transitioned over to the dodecahedral puzzles. The more you know.

      @@infiniteplanes5775 There are some, like the Skewb Diamond, the Face-Turning Octahedron, and the Dogic, the regular Skewb also counts as it has an octahedral core construction. I assume the reason is those shapes are just harder to make good twisty puzzles with, and the Dogic from what I can find only comes in 10-color, perhaps all 20 was too much for the average user.

    I just bought that same gigaminx a week ago, I also solved it on my own based on 5x5 and megaminx knowledge, although I did do all the centers, then all the edges and I can confirm, it takes a really long time.
    I actually really enjoyed solving it, because you can solve almost the entire thing intuitively it felt less formulaic and more immersive than a cube. I think the reason it's more intuitive than a cube is because any turn you make on a cube affects 4-5 of 6 sides, whereas on a dodecahedron a turn only affects 6/12 or 50%, so there's a lot more room to move pieces around without affecting anything else

    This was a lot of fun to watch. I basically did the same about two weeks ago (got a Gigaminx and tried to do it without help). I was afraid of: a) having to do commutators and b) parity on the last edge. But on a 5×5 you can always get the last two centres without commutators and for some reason, odd-size dodecahedra don't have parity! yay

    your gut instinct is correct, there are really no parities on this puzzle

    • @archgirl
      @archgirl 3 роки тому +3

      But there’s still false equivocation like odd-layered cubic puzzles, which still resemble parity even if they’re not _technically_ parity.

    • @m.reichmann7192
      @m.reichmann7192 3 роки тому +1

      @@archgirl I am sorry if my question is too obvious, but what do you mean with "false equivocation"?

    • @archgirl
      @archgirl 3 роки тому +3

      @@m.reichmann7192 It simply means that you can get cases on odd-layered puzzles which resemble a parity error and are often called a parity error, but are actually not.
      Think about a 5x5. You’ve solved the centers and edges, but one edge has the outer wings flipped over so they’re opposite to the middle piece. It’s essentially the same as a 4x4 edge flip parity case, but with the hidden middle layer exposed. To solve it, you use the same parity algorithm you use to flip an edge pair on a 4x4, so it’s often called parity, but it isn’t one, technically. Now think about the 4x4. When you’ve got a flipped edge on a 4x4, if you had stickers on the hidden middle layers, it might look just like the 5x5 edge, with the middle edge piece sitting backwards between the flipped outer wings. In practice, we’ll never know, of course, because the hidden middle layers of a 4x4 are fixed in position on some axis, so it doesn’t behave the same. It would be like solving a 5x5 whilst never turning the middle layers at all, which technically isn’t possible.
      All this just means that there technically isn’t any possible even-layer parity on an odd-layered puzzle like the Gigaminx, but you can still run into cases where you’ll need a parity algorithm, just like on 5x5/7x7 etc. Looks and behaves like parity, but isn’t.

    • @m.reichmann7192
      @m.reichmann7192 3 роки тому +2

      @@archgirl Oh ok, now I understand. Thanks for your detailed explanation :D
      But still, that special case can not occur on a Gigaminx.
      You can only exchange three pieces of one kind on any puzzle. (you can combine those "three-cycles" to get bigger cycles, but all of them are made by swapping 3 pieces. Swapping two pieces is impossible.)
      The cubic puzzles are the big exception: on those you can combine a 3-cycle with a quarter turn, to make it look like only two pieces are swapped. (in reality, that quarter turn has still an effect on the rest of the puzzle. That is the reason, why every time you swap two edges on the 3x3, also two corners are swapped.)
      The cubic puzzles are special, because with each quarter turn, you move an even number of pieces: 4 edges and 4 corners.
      only on those puzzles, where you can move an even number of pieces, you can make it look like only two cubies are swapped.
      on the 4x4 and 5x5 the "flipped edge" is the result of two exchanged edge wings, like you said. in the case of the 4x4 and 5x5 the source of the parity is one deep quarter turn move. Doing this will destroy some of your centers, but the edge-parity is now easily solvable. The parity-alg is just an efficient way to fix those centers in one go, other wise you would need to solve them by hand
      Now to the Gigaminx:
      whenever you turn a side, an odd number of pieces are swapped: 5 edges, 5 corners, and a bunch of middle pieces, but 5 of each
      This means you cant even create something that looks like two pieces are swapped. If you have a Megaminx, you can try to exchange exactly two edges. It wont work, not even if the corners are messed up. (you can also prank your friends that way, its hilarious :P)
      like the normal turns, the deep turns also only swap an odd number of pieces, thus you cannot make it look like only two edge-wings are swapped and nothing else.
      Also on things like multi-layered pyraminxes, you cannot swap two edge wings, Because one turn always moves an odd umber of pieces. (On the pyraminx, it is also impossible to have only two edges swapped)
      there is still a chance, that we define "parity" in slightly different ways, so here is my understanding about it: ua-cam.com/video/ExVTKy0XOrw/v-deo.html
      and the part about only swapping three pieces at once: ua-cam.com/video/L57yx36Du-Y/v-deo.html
      [sry for the self-promotion]
      I hope this explanation was not too long and confusing, if I made any mistakes or you still have questions, please ask : )

    You should scramble a 4x4 like a 2x2 & then scramble it like a 3x3. After that, solve the 4x4 into a 2x2(it can be done using only outer moves, obviously) & then solve it like a 2x2. I tried it just now & it was so fun that i thought it should be an official WCA event!

    When I first learned how to do a 3x3 my brother bought me a megaminx for my birthday with a jokingly smug 'solve this!' When I started it I found that up until the very last algorithm, I was able to solve it purely with my beginner's knowledge of a 3x3 without looking up any help, so when I hear all the comparisons between a gigaminx and a 5x5 I'm really not surprised.
