Practice is about consistency. Skill builds with time, practice keeps the skill close to the surface. But if you’re not careful, all that practice can give you a false expectation that you are owed good performance. Relaxation practice is the most important practice in my book.

At my first ever competition, I got a one-handed single of 14.09 in the first round, and during the finals, I got 14.29 and 13.05. This was all completely unexpected because I average around 20-21 seconds at home, and considering that I was nervous, who knows how I got three sub-15's.

Taking breaks is very important for developement. I played piano at a relatively high level for years, all of this makes perfect sense! It also helps with mental health, and can help steal back some of that passion from the jaws of "work".
Two months is admittedly a bit steep, try taking more intentional and regular breaks for a week or two a few times throughout the year, two months sounds like burn out, and boy should nobody blame you for that. But you'll get better results from your break (and YES, this IS a thing) and contend less with burn out if you break for shorter periods but more frequently.
    Love ya dude, sick times!

I know this comment comes a bit late, but I wanna share what I learnt from being a professional pianist, which relates to cubing in terms of developing technique, muscular memory, and then the knoledge, the looking ahead, and the understanding of the instrument as in many ocassions you need to play in a different instrument from the one you practice daily for hours.
I've learn that expectations and the pressure you feel to perform well are but detriments. I've also experience going to an event under prepared, not having practice as much as I usually did, and the results were just great. After going through it a lot of times and going through a big depression that kept me from practicing altogether, I discover that when we practice so much, we create the expectation of getting better results, and that shield us from doing what we best do. Stress and expectations play a weird effect in the body, and prevent us from flowing naturally and putting 100% of our training to use.
The story goes long but to sum up, the moment I was able to make my brain think that I was going to the events to enjoy myself, the moment I understood that no matter how much I train, there's a lot of minuscule factors that scape my control and will have an impact in my performance, and that I should just see it as "let's see in which way this performance is unique and what can I learn from it", [...], that was the moment I reached peak performance in my career, even when my technique wasn't as good as before my depression, I was doing better in all fields.
    Maybe this comment helps someone.

your practicing theory also applies to me on basketball, before i used to play a lot before a game, and i do kinda bad just scoring a few points, but a few weeks ago it was the day before tryouts ad I did not play because it was raining, I ended up scoring 30 points in scrimmage games in tryouts and got in the team, i thought it was a fluke but it actually kinda make sense now since I just got sub 40 single in 4x4 doing sessions when I didn't cube yesterday

So I'm posting this here because, as your most recent video, it seems to me you'll be more likely to see this comment. It's like the UA-cam logarithm but in reverse!
Basically I just wanted to say thank you. You have really established a quality channel, you're fun to watch, and you display a level of humility and joy that is rare. On my part -- a month ago, my two-yr-old son brought me a toy store cube that my wife had bought him and begged me to solve it. I had no idea. First I found the 'Wired' tutorial for the beginner method. First solve was 20+ minutes. Then I found your channel. All your stuff bro... so helpful. Now, after a month, I still have three algs left to memorize for 2-look OLL (PI, L and U), my F2L still needs so much work, but I just got a PB of 48' and my ao5 under 1 minute.
It's a season of extra intentional thankfulness, you know, and I just wanted to genuinely say thank you for sharing your passion, making it welcoming and so so so fun to watch, and again for your humility. May PB's abound!

I want to buy it cause I have full trust in you. Biut still, a review of the cube will be better and it will even clarify and specify the advanteges and best sides of the cube.

Hello J Perm! I know I'm late to commenting on this video, but I just wanted to say that I am a 14 year old cuber trying to get faster, and I first learned how to solve it from your 3x3 beginner tutorial. I'm not constantly watching your videos to improve you have been a huge inspiration to me. I currently average around 32 seconds on 3x3, which I know isn't good at all, but I'm working on it! I just swapped from beginner tutorial+f2L to the full cfop method (2-look oll, 2-look pll) but I have confidence that I will continue to improve, and am hoping to one day meet you irl at a competition or something. I know chances are that you won't ever see this but if you somehow see this then I want to thank you for all the help your videos has given me :)

I wanna see a competition where it's just peak performance
    So here's the rules:
    1. You get either 1 or 5 different scrambles
    2. You have a team of 2 or more people (1 to do the speed cubing and 1-2 to find the most efficient way to solve the scrambles)
    3. They'll be given like 5 hours to find the most efficient way to solve the scrambles and then at the end every team will take turns solving the cube
It'll be like FMC but fast so it'll be wicked fast

Hello jperm, please just read this message specifically and please believe me that its not just a normal comment:
If you'll just upload a video explaining what you're doing (but not returning to upload normally because I know you need your break) then people wont be sad because they wont be knowing wgat happens to you. So please, just upload 1 video explaining what happened, that's all

I have some questions that I have nobody else to ask.
    1. Is learning full pull and I’ll worth it in the end, does it /can it improve your times dramatically (well more but you know what I mean)
    2. I’m struggling to get faster with my f2l (it’s taking me around 30-40 ish seconds to do it- I average around 1:30 to fully complete the cube) and I don’t know how to get faster with learning/ executing algorithms.. advice?
    3. How do you improve your tps (turns per second)
    4. When I first start the timer I always hesitate (I think it’s just the execution part because I know what u have to do with making the cross) how do I stop the hesitation.
I don’t know if anyone is currently reading this, if so I hope it made sense. Thank you!

    • @chinjunsi7752
      @chinjunsi7752 Рік тому +1

With 1:30 average the best advice is to practice and be more familiar with Rubik's cube. You don't need any 1 look algorithms till sub 20

I've always solved the 3x3 cube as a hobby. Learned the beginner method, then the beginner CFOP method. It has always been really enjoyable, but as time went on this ambition of learning more and better methods to solve the cube faster grew on me.
I felt alone too. In my country cubing is not as popular as in the US, so I haven't met anybody who's interested in it too, let alone speedcubing.
Lately, after a long while without cubing, I stumbled upon some videos on youtube about speedcubing. Despite my strong ambition to get better and faster at solving the cube, it was really stressing too, so I was ok with what I learned till then. Plus, my only normal 3x3 cube is a Rubik's brand "speed" cube, so it doesn't make it funnier. 😒
But still, these videos kept me interested this time. I started with tutorials, then some competitions, prank videos, blogs... From the distance, I'm diving deeper in this world of cubing I discovered years ago, knowing youtuber cubers and speedcubers, pros and their stories as well. Even though I'm still in my home, I'm having a great time!
I started practicing again, these times more deliberately, and not so much just for the fun of solving the cube. I'm learning more: I printed many CFOP algorithms documents to practice, I downloaded and learned to use a timer app on my phone (with computer generated scrambles and stuff), and just today I got my first solve in less than 1 minute! Still trying not to obsess and stress too much though, but overall I'm enjoying it!
Anyway, I didn't intend my comment to end up being this big, but thanks to people like you who share their knowledge and experiences on the internet, this hobby has really grown on me, so I thought I'd share my part too.
In the future, I hope I can go to those competition places, make friends, have lots of fun, and maybe even trying to actually compete! I got college on my plate rn but who knows, if I keep practicing and improving steadily, maybe one day I'll have improved enough to have a chance.
Thank you. Glad I discovered you.
