I word it like this. If God is a supernatural being (ok "above" supernatural to cover all metaphysical bases) then such God cannot have anything to do with the natural. It (God) can't create it, can't even think about it.
Theologians/Philosophers may try to explain that since God is a 'super-natural' God the word itself is the clue containing the descriptor 'natural' therefore the descriptor itself is the explanation (ie made up) thus enabling God to do what is natural and so on. However this would require the supernatural god to reduce itself to a natural god and that cannot work because it (God) could only reduce it's own super-natural-ness and cannot divorce/subtract etc the natural from the 'super.'
One's imagination on the other hand is the creation of the brain so that the organism can navigate its world (for the sole purpose of reproduction). The brain is not one's own brain because no one is at home.
I hope this all makes sense because a lot of Theists (and even Atheists) seem to quickly skim over the contradiction that comes up between the natural and supernatural.
Because God can is simply not an explanation for anything.

    • @lucofparis4819
      @lucofparis4819 4 місяці тому

@@Firestorm12345678910Yep, it's a fairly common problem in theology. Yet apologists, even those who are supposed to be theologians, seem fairly quick to simply dismiss this glaring issue with the mere act of Creation.
A common cope from actual theologians who bother to think about it is to propose that the Cosmos 'emanates' from God, but this view immediately prevents any subsequent attempt to put God behind a truly untouchable curtain, since it immediately cast the material world as a divine emanation, thus annihilating any supernatural cop-out.
Another move consists in framing the 'supernatural realm' as some primordial state of affairs governed by its own set of physical laws, with God as its sole resident. In the meantime, our cosmos is then framed as some kind of fully artificial construct governed by its own set of physical laws as well as God's default laws.
An analogy to this particular move would put God as the admin of some kind of cosmic simulation, its powers being in fact its admin privileges, our physical laws being merely simulation rules. This cosmos would be simulated on some contraption obeying the laws of God's reality level, whereas our reality level would obey the simulation's laws.

This is the "Douglas Adams paradox".
In "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy", Douglas introduced the Babel Fish. An animal so useful it could not have possibly evolved naturally. Thus proving the non existence of god.
God - " I refuse to prove my existence, for proof denies faith, and without faith I'm nothing".
Man - "what about the Babel Fish though, thats a dead givaway".
God - "Oh dear, I hadn’t thought of that". God then vanishes in a whiff of logic having simultaneously proving he does and therefore does not exist.
What these people need, is to definitively prove god doesn’t exist thus proving that he does.
    I miss Douglas!

      Here's the kicker:

"If there were perceptual, sensible, evidence of God, then it wouldn't be the God of the Bible."
No sentence has ever screamed "I've never actually read the Bible" than this claim right here. All through out the Bible, not just with Jesus but even before Jesus, God appeared to people through out every single Bible story. He was seen, heard, and felt. I don't recall any stories about anyone describing how God smelled or tasted but certainly 3 of the 5 senses are accounted for. So if the God of the Bible were real then we should easily be able to find evidence that he exists because there was clearly defined evidence of his existence through out all of the Bible's "history" If we can not find any of the same evidence in our present day then the logical conclusion is that the Bible is a work of fiction that does not in any way reflect our reality.
The God he describes which would be impossible to prove the existence of is not the God of the Bible and it would be impossible for anyone to make any claim about knowing anything about such a God since you admitted yourself that if God were real that he's impossible to prove the existence of. So if God exists or not wouldn't matter since we can't know anything about him. We can't know if he's good or evil, we can't know if this God is even a he, a she, or something else entirely, so by your addition any God that you can claim to know anything about inherently is not a God, it's a idle, and if it's not God then it shouldn't be worshiped. Of course even if it is a God it still shouldn't be worshiped because since we can't know anything about it there's no reason to worship it. We wouldn't even know how to worship such a being or even if it wanted to be worshiped, the very act of worship is to claim knowledge about a being which you admit we can't know. It's a very self defeating argument as almost all religious arguments are. And the ones that aren't aren't self defeating aren't really winning arguments either because the argument still applies even without a God. But according to what he just said literally nothing can support the existence of a God.

Apart from LBB having a deft ability to stick a foot in his mouth, without removing the other one, theres this matter of revisionist theology that plays into fabrication of the most convenient narrative of the day.
Secular (and even some theist) biblical historians, recognise a trend in the gospels of each author consecutively ramping up the divinity of jesus. Gods generally begin with rather mundane human like properties and parochial concerns of the tribes that worship them. But those properties are far too conspicuous and prone to empirical verification. Church leaders and theologians can't readily lie about the gods with testable properties.
The less transcendent gods started out among humans. Some specially anointed shaman could go into the cave and comune with the god. But it was too easy to sneak into the cave, so succeeding holly men, had gods living on a mountain, then in the clouds, then some ethereal dimension inaccessible to humans called heaven.
Keeping god hidden also involved textual obfuscation. The main reason the Catholic church, opposed translating the Bible from Latin into the lingua franca of the masses was obviously for gatekeeping purposes; to control the narative.
Now our beloved LBB, employs the very same age old middle man, gatekeeping theological strategies, for people who don't read the Bible, or care if he contradicts it. The problem is the old testament god was much more like the ju ju up the mountain. In fact Moses goes up the mountain to get the commandments. So he has to ignore all that terrestrial interaction in the old testament, while also contradicting the trinitarian aspect that eventually makes Jesus out to be god in human form.
This is the problem with adopting the more anthropomorphic gods in the interest of trying to maintain a following from prior religious traditions. Any significant modificatios will eventually apear contradictory to their parent texts.
Christianity has never been able to escape the revisionist milieu of its Jewish legacy so poor LBB is left with having to saddle god with empirically undetectable properties while simply lying about the anthropomorphic legacy of god in his own book and its own revisionist trends, to continue this impossible trajectory of theological revision that describes god as identical a non-existent entity, while contradicting the biblical authors who's god began as far more human like and evolved much more transcend properties towards divinity throughout history.
I don't know where future generations of theologians can go, after having inherited a god concept indistinguishable from one that doesn't exist, while contending with texts that still attest to a god much more akin to the ju ju up the mountain.

According to George Smith, Craig is actually hitting on a key difference between skeptics and believers.
The supernatural, pretty much by definition, is undetectable by our natural senses and equipment.
Both sides can agree on this; but where the theist takes this as evidence for God's greatness, the skeptic thinks this removes the concept from rational consideration.

  • @grumpylibrarian

Awesome answer! I'm going to humbly latch onto a much smaller point:
1:51 "If you could have a direct sensible apprehension of god, this would be a finite, limited being unworthy of worship"
... So, that's what makes a being "worthy of worship"? Character doesn't even come into the picture?!

    • @francesconicoletti2547
      @francesconicoletti2547 4 місяці тому

That sentence doesn’t make sense in so many ways. My sensing it doesn’t limit it , it still is vast.
People have and do worship gods other than ultimate creator gods. I don’t think it’s up to WLC to dictate what is worship worthy. Streams, trees, dead people, live people and a myriad other things have been worshipped.

I’m told WLC is on the faculties of BIOLA and Houston Christian U and that these organizations require all teachers to sign statements of faith. I would think publishing his hypotheses that, for instance, his god is not able to be seen or heard or that Adam and Eve are mere metaphors would be considered heretical and in violation of his faith statements. He’s basically saying his Bible isn’t literally true, and that the doctrines of fundamentalist Christianity based there on are wrong. Is he getting some pushback from his own church?

That's not a low bar. That's having no bar whatsoever. This doesn't even seem like a man earnestly defending his faith. He's just a man willing to say whatever he thinks meets the rhetorical needs of the moment, regardless of whether the words have any meaning or content.

"God spoke verbally to several people in Scripture to tell them what He wanted them to do. Some of those include Abraham in Genesis 12:1-4 where God told Abraham to leave his own country to go to a land God would give him eventually. Moses and Aaron heard God speak in Exodus 7 with instructions about how to approach Pharaoh to demand he let the Israelites go from Egypt. God spoke verbally at Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3:13-17 pronouncing blessing on His only begotten Son as Jesus began His earthly ministry. God also spoke verbally to Paul on the road to Damascus when Paul was converted (Acts 9:3-6). "
