      Yep!
Josephus was very clear about how the Roman legionnaires treated Jews during the Jewish-Roman war that ended in the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple circa. 70 CE.
They were crucifying up to 300 Jews every single day before the walls of the besieged city. They were endlessly cruel and inventive, making a spectacle so utterly horrifying each day because they hoped to convince the defenders it was easier just to give up.
The historical record, based on unbiased sources instead of Christian mythology, says that the Romans treated the Jews far, far, worse than they ever treated the tiny little Christian cult in the first century. 🙄

I'm just now starting to realize some important distinctions in terminology that help me frame things: rulers build and maintain empires, leaders build and maintain societies. Part of the reason we're having so much trouble putting together a society is that too many people keep supporting and platforming rulers, when what we need is more leaders.

The enlightenment was embraced by the Catholic Church by placing the major works on the Index of Prohibited Books. They stayed there until 1966 when the same Church found out that God was in favour of freedom of inquiry. This discovery had nothing to do with the fact that maintaining such an index had become a source of ridicule.

I still maintain that the Catholic church was more interested in temporal power than the spiritual wellbeing of their flock. This life is a vale of tears (know your place) you'll get your reward in the life hereafter in heaven.
Last century a family friend told me why The Church was so against translation of the Bible in to the local language: when 90+% of the population are illiterate & certainly can't read Latin, then the priest can tell them any old nonsense is contained within the holy book.

Stuff Martin Luther said about reason:
"Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but more frequently than not struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God."
"Whoever wants to be a Christian should tear the eyes out of his reason."
"Reason should be destroyed in all Christians."
"Christ wants to slay reason and subdue the arrogance of the Jews."
“Faith must trample under foot all reason, sense, and understanding. “

This type of thinking used by the christian faith, where the path is very narrow and allows no divergence, is now a feature in today's republican party in this country. This way of thinking allows them to fool themselves into believing they possess the one true path, and to leave that path or take another path gives them the divine right to address in well established ways. Be it threatening public officials with death or to storm our nation's Capitol. History gives us many examples to consider as you so well provided. By the way nice job of condensing that part, you could have spent hours on that portion alone.

In translating a song to Spanish, I would have gone with Stairway To Heaven too. In fact I DID!

Kings and royalty also had a big hand in spreading Christianity. A lot of denominational deaths happened by a change of the throne when the king would proclaim the new national religion, the old holy men would sometimes be rounded up and executed, and the new holy men would start the loving righteous task of abducting the non-believers and trying them as heretics.
By todays definition, Christianity would have been labeled a terrorist organization.

This new translation to everyday speech disempowered the Church and was totally banned, but
no one could hamper this schismatic breach and the printers kept filling black-market demand!

Non of the teachings of Christianity back in the day of each of these great changes were that of the changes. Before many Christians adopted a scientific method mindset in looking for God, it wasn't part of the Christian teachings to use the scientific method at all. It's very important to have debates here. Tom Holland already had a debate with AC Grayling on this topic. Why not discuss things over with Tom ? For me this would be very interesting to watch. Imo, he's a very good historian, he has an excellent history podcast that is very popular, and his books are number one on Amazon in Ancient history. Western Christianity indeed did some horrible things, however they also did some good things as well, the catholics founded the first universities in Europe, or at least most of them right? I think the problem lies in the extremes, i.e. the christians never did anything wrong or christians never did anything right. Didn't the Christians fight for the abolition of slavery?

    • @misterdeity
      @misterdeity 5 місяців тому +5

No. Tom Holland is not an historian. That is not his professional training. And in fact, I consulted a PhD in ancient history for this series. I’d advise you to pay particular attention to part six, see that PhD’s comment regarding Tom’s insights, and then look at the linked articles from that PhD - one in particular regarding these very claims of Tom’s. I watched hours and hours of interviews with Tom regarding this topic. He says so many stupid things, I simply can’t take him seriously as an historian. He should have debated a professional historian rather than a philosopher. As for slavery, I address this quite a bit in the additional videos in this series. Enjoy!!! Oh, and the Moors in Spain had universities first. And almost all of the “good stuff” in the Latin West begins after the reintroduction of classic Greek and Roman literature preserved and valued by the Muslims and the Greek Church in the East. Christianity shares virtually none of the values of the enlightenment. If it had, the world would be a much better place. Again, see the rest of the videos in this series.

@@misterdeity Thanks for your quick reply. I'll have a look. I'm at part 3 on your videos and I'll watch all of them. As for Tom Holland as a historian, historians can get it wrong. If he is wrong about this, I can't tell yet as I don't know anything about the enlightenment. I'm more interested in ancient history, and Tom writes extremely well about the Romans, and that's why his books sell really well. I've read 5 of his books, 3 books about Roman history, Dominion and In the shadow of the sword. I know he reached his conclusions after studying the ancient Romans, which actually is his field of expertise. I would really like to see a debate, hours long between Tom and a historian who does not share his views. In my opinion, Tom was better than Grayling in the debate. Tom has many many videos and interviews about his book Dominion, so he's open for a discussion, so why not try to arrange a debate or a conversation between your friend (the ancient historian) and Tom for the sake of people like me who are not experts on this ?

Hi Mister Deity. Now, you know I love you, babe, but you really should consider leaving the Crusades off the list of “typical” expansion of Christianity. After hundreds of years of occasional attacks by expansionist Muslims around the periphery of Europe, Christian oriented Constantinople begged for military assistance from Rome to fight off yet another attempted conquest of its empire, which was collapsing from the Muslim onslaught. The Christians struggled for years before to coming to grips with the idea of fighting such protracted wars at all, resulting in doctrinal changes in their religion itself. There followed hundreds of more years of attacks and counter attacks, all of dubious utility and ethics, on all sides. Muslims captured Spain and Portugal, and arguably, nearly succeeded in their project of capturing much of the rest of Europe. It’s all very complicated, but this modern fairytale of solely blaming Europe is myopic and childishly naive, and rather incorrect, hence my suggestion that you leave the Crusades out of these discussions. Cheers. [ps Unfortunately, you might discover that the origins of the Inquisition are also mired in complexity, an impediment to the simple stories of religious shame and blame that are now so common. Modern minds seem compelled to make sloppy and cartoonish value judgments in these areas. Oh well…]

It's all very complicated and messy. And you'll note that I didn't highlight the crusades at all. Although, from speaking with a friend who does history professionally (PhD), I know there's a lot of interest in revisionist nonsense as well these days - like people trying to say there was no Dark Age.
