Loved how you made fun about how microphones and headphones are mostly props in many YT videos.
Right? Although, if you're listening to content and responding, the headphones are necessary. But certainly, no one needs to have a mic in the frame. The mic in this video is actually just a photo. My shotgun mic is just out of frame. LOL!!!

No, as “feel sorryism”. If you think he’s actually for real against people ever feeling sorry, instead of talking about how woke people hyper focus on that I don’t think you listen to him often enough, or he really went off the deep end, but like way way more than he seems to have here.
Same for being against oppression, he doesn’t say “oh they’re against oppression that’s ridiculous”, he’s talking about people who view *life* as being just oppressor/oppressed dichotomies, which leads to all kinds of absurdities including criminals and delinquents being treated too leniently for anyone’s good, or seeing micro aggressions everywhere etc.
Edit : So yeah he made his response to mr Deity basically confirming everything I said there, aka he isn't saying you shouldn't feel sorry or that there're no oppressors and oppressed, just that woke is when you take those things to such an extreme that you don't think about them rationally anymore, which leads them to be censorous, to shut down discussions, to never acknowledge the responsibility of "the oppressed" in their bad outcomes, etc.
I appreciate the fact that you can recognize Doug for his good work in the atheist community but also call him out for his atrocious politics. Much respect to you Mr. Deity 🤘

As I've said elsewhere in the comments here, the only definition needed of "woke" is it is just a derogatory label one tribe uses against another. This is great. I've been looking for a term to describe those Christians who claim they are an oppressed minority in this country and demand special consideration and privilage. Thanks to Doug, I now know the word to describe such Christians is "woke".
I mean unironically yeah, there's a reason why dough called them a cult, they have similar attributes. The difference is that christians of this brand are entirely self centered, whereas woke are often riddled with guilt in regard to groups they aren't a part of.

Came here from Doug's rant, so that's a good thing. Woke to me is simply about equality and freedom, not "feelsorryforism". I'm an old guy from Texas who went left and atheist in my 50s. So there's hope for everyone.
Can you concede that what you’re calling “Woke to me” may differ from a social phenomenon that is going on right now? The problem I have with these slogans in general is that they can quickly take on a spectrum of meanings as people use them daily, particularly online, and then we’re no longer even talking about the same thing. It’s entirely possible that the majority of “woke” interactions he’s had has been the “feelsorryforism” and at the same time, that’s a small portion of what you’ve experienced. And ironically, by boxing each other because of a disparity in context, neither of you are being woke!
@@chrlpolk The original meaning is "being aware of racial and other prejudices". I believe I'm in keeping with it's goal of equal rights and freedoms. If Cons somehow see equal rights as taking rights away from them, they'll just have to get over it.

If you look online - and it won’t take much looking - you’ll see (particularly amongst the 20’s-30’s demo) a movement of “better than you because I’m woke” types who use concepts of injustice to excuse their own bad behaviors. The kind of atmosphere where if I say I was in full support of the BLM protests up until the rioting, they lump me in as a Trump supporter. This is what I’m saying - the word has different meanings. You bring up its original context, but also, there’s how it is being now regardless of the origin.

I had a woke experience. I wondered why a neighbor would veer into my driveway when walking by in their walker. I never noticed before that the sidewalks in our neighborhood slant down from the driveways to the road, making the sidewalks wibbly-wobbly and difficult for wheelchairs and walkers.

As I'd known some pretty socially progressive conservatives, as I said, I was unaware. Then I heard him say something, what, I don't remember, but it was that bad. He doesn't appear to have any respect for women, nor many others who don't fit his idea of superior. As for being a 'catch' you are a beautiful rainbow trout. He's more of a mucky old glove. She is very good at her analysis of Mormonism but then when it comes to Christianity she throws out all of her critical thinking skills and just goes with her feelings. It is weird. I think Doug's politics are more a religion to him than anything he has come to using logic and reason.

Woke: a term used to fallaciously type cast a person in order to dismiss any claims made by that person without any need in providing supporting evidence or counter-argument.

Devil’s advocate: it’s also used to describe a convo shutdown the other way around.

The best definition for woke I've ever heard,. . One who is no longer asleep or blinded to things that generally get overlooked. It can apply to many things such as injustices, oppressions, or bigotry. People who don't see these problems that exist allow them to be perpetuated. Many people tell them to wake up and see what's going on! Once you become aware of these negatives that exist in our society you are considered 'woke'

From what I've seen a lot of the USA's issues comes from segregation of communities. The same thing happens in the UK, where groups intermingle, there appears to be more equality and better outcomes for all members of society
Agreed. I have no Black, Asian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu or Protestant Friends. I simply calls them all 'Friends'. I adore them all. I can not fathom how North America can claim they embrace equality, while keeping a straight face.

Dining is no different to accommodating Vegans, Vegetarians, Pescatarians, Diabetics, Nut and food Allergies, Lactose Intolerance, Fish on Fridays etc. This may sound alien to you, but all one has to do is be considerate. Treat them with respect and as they deserve to be treated. In my country we do not all eat from one giant Manger. Just like Steaks, you ask your friends: Rare, Medium Rare, Well Done? You will learn what they like, or simply ask.

For all the points where I do find the weaknesses in his definition, Doug at least has a definition that is better than most critics that I have seen -- that is something of substance that can be pushed back on, however minimal, that kind of relates to the original concept - sort of.
