All these people arguing over the intended meaning, but isn't this the beauty of music? We all will hear and interpret it differently. That is art, and beautiful.
" her body in the moonlight overthrew you ". I cannot imagine a more poetic expression of loveliness. I heard that line near 30 years ago and the impression it gave hasn't lost a bit of the magic.....when I was young I was deeply in love with an island girl while stationed in Guam and a night we were walking along the western shore, a full moon was low on the horizon. Without a doubt the sight of her standing at water's edge a bright silver carpet starting where she stood lay across the oceans subtle ripples her in a summer dress the full moon serving but for one purpose. I've lived in the South Pacific and up and down the west coast, I've traveled a lot, so many beautiful sights. Yet nothing has come close to that one moment I knew even then that I was given a once in a lifetime gift. I saw beautiful at it's absolute most beautiful.
Regarding whether this is a "Christian song"...as others have said, it's about David and Bathsheba from the Bible, which is a story about perverse "love". She was married and apparently bathed on the roof of her house and David saw her. She shouldn't have been doing that, and he should have immediately turned away, but he believed his "faith was strong" and he "needed proof" -- either that he was strong enough to resist, or that she was a beautiful as she seemed, or both -- and of course allowing the temptation enough time to sprout, it got the best of him. He succumbed to his lust for her, and after getting her pregnant, tragedy touched the lives of everyone involved. There is a part of the song that talks about how she drew a "Hallelujah" out of him while "in the act", which is probably Cohen noticing how people often scream OMG when doing it, and so he appears to be focusing on that ironic fact...people call out God's name when they are in the middle of doing something they should definitely not be doing. This song is about the irony of calling it "making love" when real love often has nothing to do with it. David loved God and God loved him, but that love was damaged by something often called "love" but which is really something else. Real love heals, it doesn't damage and destroy. Cohen is focusing in a nebulous way on the ironies related to love. The line about "she cut your hair" is a reference to another Bible story, Samson and Delilah, where Delilah accused Samson of not loving her because he wouldn't tell her the secret of his strength (which was due to his hair never having been cut--he was a Nazarite), when the only reason she wanted to know was so she could betray him. She used love as a pretense to exercise betrayal and hatred. That idea of weaponizing "love" is what Cohen is getting at in the lines "But all I've ever learned of love is how to shoot somebody who outdrew you." Cohen mixes the S&D reference into the D&B storyline because it is a similar theme, of perverse, false, and broken love. The lines "there was a time when you let me know what's really going on below" refers to the strong relationship David had with ':Elohhiym (God) before his great sin, when YHWH guided his way and kept him safe from his enemies, and the following line "...but now you never show that to me, do you?" refers to the change in their relationship afterwards. Feeling betrayed, God stopped guiding David's path. David realizes that even though YHWH had given him victory over his enemies, that "love is not a victory march". Love isn't strengthened much by good times; rather it manifests its greatest strength when the chips are down. If I am reading Cohen's intent correctly, saying "love is a cold and broken hallelujah" is saying that love isn't "the heat of passion", but it is the shame, remorse, and regret that leads to repentance and the reestablishment of real love. David remembers the good times: "Remember when I moved in you" refers to the fact that until he sinned, everything David did was according to YHWH's will and Spirit (the holy dove)...everything, even every breath, was to the praise of God--Hallelu Yah means "Praise YaH!" So, it isn't directly a Christian song--especially since Cohen, who wrote the song, was Jewish; his last name, Cohen comes from the Hebrew word for "priest"--but it draws on the Bible (specifically the Tanakh, i.e. the OT) and attempts to use David's story to put forward the idea that love isn't really the Westernized Hollywood Romance crap that we've been sold ("it's not a cry that you hear at night"). It's something that is more precious, and delicate, and worthy of protecting, even to the point and especially when the love is damaged and grows cold, because the real thing is worth it. Sadly, it's something that often isn't appreciated until its been trashed.
"It's not a cry you hear at night, It's not someone who's seen the light. Its a cold and its a broken Hallelujah." Fuck..... when you're down on your knees trying to call out to any God that's up there but it only comes out as a broken squeak.... damn....
Love cannot conquer the heart with selfish pride. Faith cannot conquer the soul with melancholy fear. Evil cannot conquer the mind with justifiable righteousness. Hallelujah ! A blessing from the Lord that we've broken and left out in the cold.
people arguin about the meaning, or who sang it best. remember this, music, art, it's subjective. its not so much about the original message. its about waht it makes you feel, its about the message you take, it doesnt matter what it makes you feel, so long as it does, that is what good music does.
Laura Barrie very true. Many artists laugh at what so called experts write when dissecting their music. Sometimes it's just words and instruments but that is all that is needed to emphasise a certain feeling that strikes a cord in us. Anyway, I sing it best ;)
what I love about this song is that everyone relates to it. no matter what theyre going through. it wasnt meant to bring argunents from the reason. it was to bring everyone together. people thinks is biblical. some people things its sexuality and some people think its sex. no matter what perspective the lyrics fit perfectly. thats what I find the most beautoful stickibg part of this song.

Jeff Buckley died at age 30 and had 1 or 2 albums. For those who like the Shrek or Penatonix version that's fine. But like many others Buckley defined the meaning of this song with the passion and heart. Just when he was reaching his highest peak in popularity, he drowned in the Mississippi river not having any drugs or alcohol in his system. This tragedy still left us one of the greatest song cover if not the most passionate of all time. RIP Jeff Buckley and thanks!
This song has so many interpretations, that's part of why i love it. Buckley's version is seeped in sexual tension that it is hard to miss. Not sure if somebody else posted but here is what Leonard Cohen says himself. Here are some quotes from Leonard Cohen that may shed some light on this question and give us some interesting perspectives about the meaning of this song: “I wanted to get into this tradition of the composers who said “Hallelujah”, but with no precisely religious point of view.” “It’s, as I say, a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way, but with enthusiasm, with emotion” (Leonard Cohen interview, 1985). “I wanted to write something in the tradition of the hallelujah choruses but from a different point of view”(Leonard Cohen interview, 1995). The traditional “Hallelujah” is an ancient word of prayer, used for expressing a person’s or a nation’s gratitude, love and loyalty to their lord - calling out: “Let’s all praise the lord”. Cohen wanted to be - in some way - a continuer of this tradition, although it would be independent of any religious framework .Cohen has a new way, a new meaning for the “Hallelujah”. He wants to call out his own “Hallelujah” to the Lord, to the world and to life. “There is a religious Hallelujah, but there are many other ones .When one looks at the world and his proper life there’s only one thing to say, it is ‘Hallelujah’ “. “The Hallelujah, the David’s Hallelujah, was still a religious song. So I wanted to indicate that Hallelujah can come out of things that have nothing to do with religion”. “And then I realize there is a Hallelujah more general that we speak to the world, to life”. (Leonard Cohen interviews, 1985 - 1988)
Hum Hallelujah by Fall Out Boy brought me here. Pete Wentz, the bassist, tried to kill himself to this song playing on the radio by overdosing on Atavan in a Best Buy parking lot. This song saved his life instead. He made a few phone calls and they got there in time. The song has a line that goes,"Hum Hallelujah, just off the key of reason." The key of reason is C Major which Hallelujah is in. In the bridge of Hum Hallelujah, they sing the "hallelujah, hallelujah" part in D Major, which is just off the key of reason, C Major. Clever, isn't it?
"Maybe there's a God above, but all I've ever learned from love is how to shoot somebody who outdrew you" literally a clear representation of a relationship gone stale
@@bjbaratti1 Yes, it "exceeds." In this song, the man "rises" above his desires for love /lust for woman to ...love for God. ALL human relationships bring heartache sooner or later (death, divorce, breakups, etc) but Father NEVER fails in His eternal love.
I would like to dedicate this song to my mom she is 99 nobody in the family really cares but I do.ive been taking care of her for over 20 years my brothers do nothing but I dont care I will always be there for her.
the point of the song was ro have many perspections to everyone. he didnt want to aim it to some people. he wanted the whole world to listen to the exact same song and relate to it.
From how I interpret it, this song is about someone who at first questions what love is. That someone then finds "the love of their life", but soon comes to realise that love isn't what they seemed. It isn't something you should joke about. They find out that love isn't like cupid shooting you with an arrow or how love is more complicated than positive at first. Love is either something you learn on your own, or it's something you will never find out. I honestly think that this song proves to me that there is no specific definition of love. That's something you must define yourself.
sarei tentato di non scrivere il seicentosessantasettesimo commento...questa meravigliosa canzone è dissacrante...spero di sentirla a tutte le cerimonie matrimoniali!
Just learnt to play on guitar such a beautiful song but Buckley dose something extra with his picking that takes it to a new level. I prefer a more traditional singing to buckley's version but he definitely plays it the best I've heard.
For anybody who wants to know what Hallelujah means, it’s praise be to the most high, the last 3 words Jah is referencing God Which Jah is the short version of God name that he gave to Moses. Hallel is basically means praises, or songs.
***** yes he is. King David was also the musician who wrote most of the pslams. He also saw Bathsheba bathing while he was walking on the palace roof. She was married to one of his soldiers who was off fighting in war, he slept with her, got her pregnant, killed her husband and the baby died.
***** this is a Leonard Cohen song about true spiritual love. Not sex. And it was written with 80 verses and did go heavily into Christian salvation. Regardless of your personal thoughts on christianity, it's the most romantic faith. It's inspired more poetry and lyrics than anything in human history. He doesn't use any biblical texts, simply references to biblical histories and concepts of rebirth, salvation and divine love.
***** No. Christianity is the only faith where God condescending Himself to a human and died to save us. Took our punishment upon Himself. And it's the only faith where we are refered to as His bride. The marriage relationship in our faith is a reflection of Christ and His church (the born again believers). Ours is the only faith where God rescues us. "I am my beloved, and my Beloved is mine". This song isn't about sex. It's about love.
"Love is not a victory march." - This is great. Perfectly sums up how love is not something you accomplish, it's something you live by.

Ms Meow you made my day!
if you would have I bet you would have sang the crap out of it LOL
XD
hahahah me too
I'm really feeling this song. I listen to it everyday before I get my day started.
I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well, it goes like this: the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Baby, I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor, you know
I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me, do you?
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah
Hallelujah, hhallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
You know, thanks for telling me man. Without you typing out the lyrics, I would have never seen the video's title. Thanks a lot

This song has so many interpretations, that's part of why i love it. Buckley's version is seeped in sexual tension that it is hard to miss. Not sure if somebody else posted but here is what Leonard Cohen says himself.
Here are some quotes from Leonard Cohen that may shed some light on this question and give us some interesting perspectives about the meaning of this song:
“I wanted to get into this tradition of the composers who said “Hallelujah”, but with no precisely religious point of view.”
“It’s, as I say, a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way, but with enthusiasm, with emotion” (Leonard Cohen interview, 1985).
Thank you so much for this. I have been looking everywhere for the interpretation of this Hallelujah, and this makes perfect sense 😇

the point of the song was ro have many perspections to everyone. he didnt want to aim it to some people. he wanted the whole world to listen to the exact same song and relate to it.
Hi John I am after years
The best version... Love it!
this song was sang at my grandmother's funeral. it was her favourite song
one song of this kind.... never gonna be able to put hallelujah in no other song.... this is it.............. thanks.........
This is the greatest song ever written.
I hold no religious beliefs.. but I’ll be damned if this song doesn’t nearly jerk a tear every time.
Bitches be Bitches.
Remember when I moved in you and the holy dove was moving too and every breath we took was hallelujah....
This was my pappys song.. I miss you so much pappy 4-5-16 😢.

+Rachel than han Well that works perfectly since the song isn't religious in nature at all. Keep enjoying!
+Rachel than han At least I feel the song portrays a relationship overtime. The rise and fall of said relationship.

42 second pause, the answer to life the universe and everything
Happy new year, Hallelujah x Another year, a chance to get it right, this TIME Xxxx 💕

He talks about David and Bathsheba, Samson, and many other biblical stories
It's about butt secks.
