I don’t care what anyone says, John Cale’s version is the best one. The brokenness in his voice is what makes this song such a masterpiece and a perfect one to be used in Shrek.
John Cale invented this arrangement of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, and this is the version everyone else has covered. But Cale's rendition is far better than everyone else's that followed, because every other singer goes over the top, egoistically screeching and shouting to add "emotion" during the "hallelujah"s. Cale doesn't, and his version is all the more dignified and beautiful for it.

@connorleonard4047 no, it's not. It's a song about faith and it's ups and downs. The sex bit is a reference to king David and Sampson. "Saw her bathing on the roof" is a literal pull from scripture from when David lusted over bathsheba. She bathed outside, naked on her roof so David would see her. "She broke your throne" is reference to jezebel. "Cut your hair" was from Sampson. All 3 are examples of falling into sin through lust.
This is the version that actually plays in Shrek... but they put Rufus Waintrash on the album because he’s a Dreamworks artist. This is the best version by far
This truly is the best version of Hallelujah, the rhythm, and the tone is absolute perfection. Unlike other versions, not only is the singer's voice soothing, this version just flows so smoothly and doesn't have sudden breaks in lyrics.
November 10, 2016 It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away. We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief.
The chorus and build up in this song is literally genius. He starts off the build up normal at 1:47 and then an immediate surge of energy 1:50 for the rest of the build up culminating with a truimphant "Hallelujah" (1:56). And right after that he always has a collection of more quiet and haunting Hallelujahs (1:59) as if he is in deep thought about what he's singing about.
I thought this was the shrek one. I used to watch shrek 24/7 as a kid so when i looked up the other version i knew it didnt sound right. THIS is the version i remember

Back in 2016... I received a phone call in work from my dad saying that my Mum's Mum... my wonderful Nana had passed away. I left work early, feeling numb and broken... wondering how I was going to live the rest of my life without seeing her face again. I got in my car and proceeded to drive home... I turned the radio on and this version of this song was playing... I remember tears streaming down my face as this song played as I drove down the dual carriageway to home... it was the most heart wrenching depressing moments of my life.... I remember in my devastated state even considering ending my life there so I could join her.... but then I thought, she would not have wanted me to throw my life away "Buy your own place, meet the man of your dreams, fall in love, get married, have kids and watch them grow... then when it is your turn, we will be together again. When we do eventually meet again, I want to tell her all about my life.... and I know she will be proud of me. I miss you Nana xxx God knows we'll meet again xxxx
For those who wants to know the meaning of the lyrics, the song is being sung from the perspective of a soldier from Israel, whose wife was having an affair with King David, at the moment King David of the kingdom of Israel, Before starting the affair, the King David was able to see the soldiers wife from the window of his room while she was showering at night (From here comes: you saw her bathing on the roof, the beauty and the moonlight overthrew you), from this moment the King David fell in love with her, and started to hit on her,) then ahead soldier says (and remember when i moved in you? the holly dark was moving too) which means sexually, she was being banged by her husband and King David, and it describes how the passion of the wife for the soldier was dying while he was happy with her (Holly Dove) the big problem comes when King David fears the soldier is aware of the affair, and given to the laws of older Israel, the women who has an affair when having a husband was condemned to be killed, so to avoid this, King David sent the husband (Soldier) to the front lines of a war they were having at the moment with another kingdom so that he was killed quickly and the King David in this way could continue his romance with the women... very unfortunate story.
The song was written by fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen and has a few different interpretations. See attached en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallelujah_(Leonard_Cohen_song)
I love this song this is the only version that gives me chills I'm obsessed with the line "she broke your throne she cut your hair and from your lips she drew the hallelujah"
So pretty much Samson had all these awesome powers from God, and Delilah was a girl who he liked or was in a relationship or whatever who had been paid by a group of people to find Samson's weakness so they could capture him. She tried to get him to tell her and he said if he was tied up so she tied him up in his sleep but he broke the ropes (God strength power stuff) and eventually she got him to tell the truth, that if his hair was cut he would lose his strength. She she cut his hair when he slept and he lost his powers and was captured and tortured and/or killed
My favorite part is well the whole song lol but what really got me was " There was a time you let me know whats really going on below but now you don't show it to me do you?"

Lol this is a song about sex
@connorleonard4047 no, it's not. It's a song about faith and it's ups and downs.
The sex bit is a reference to king David and Sampson. "Saw her bathing on the roof" is a literal pull from scripture from when David lusted over bathsheba. She bathed outside, naked on her roof so David would see her.
"She broke your throne" is reference to jezebel. "Cut your hair" was from Sampson.
All 3 are examples of falling into sin through lust.
@@mikeclardy5689 it's literally about orgasms.
@@mikeclardy5689 leonard cohen wrote this song about sex and orgasm. It has nothing to do with the nonsensical christian faith

I love the formality of John Cale's voice

John Cale sings the best hallelujah song in my opinion..
By far the best version.
Agreed
Rufus Rainwrights is better imo
John Cale is one of a kind. I find his music beautiful and inspirational. I'm so glad he's around to entertain us. Thank you for sharing...
Don't know why everyone's saying the baffled king part was the best, 0:00-4:16 is clearly better

This truly is the best version of Hallelujah, the rhythm, and the tone is absolute perfection. Unlike other versions, not only is the singer's voice soothing, this version just flows so smoothly and doesn't have sudden breaks in lyrics.
The only real problem of this version is the left out verses which added a lot to the meaning
You need to hear KD Lang sing it live. Look up the performance at the Juno awards
No need to trash other artists to show your preference, Kevin
In my opinion this is the best version
This is the best version. The greatest one of all. That I remember in my dreams and mind from my childhood.

It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away.
We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief.
We watch the news, we know.
Ah yes the shrek version, the superior one.

I thought this was the shrek one. I used to watch shrek 24/7 as a kid so when i looked up the other version i knew it didnt sound right. THIS is the version i remember
His voice can't be duplicated. No other version can compare to this power...
My favorite version, voice and beat sound perfect, fits just right
The best version of this song. True, pure, broken. Emotion in a song as there should be.
Beautiful.
"I Remember when I moved in you, and the holy dove was moving too, and every breath we drew was halleluyah"
This part always touches my soul differently from other songs.
I get the shivers every time I hear this....o God is good. .
This version is about a man who cheated on his pregnant wife, this verse and the one before explains it
One of the most deeply sexual and romantic verses ever written. Reminds me of the love of my life every single time.
This song literally makes you think about life 😭
Dude, yes it does. Fuckin life is crazy for all of us, and there's always twists and turns. This song definitely crashes into my heart.
You're right. I am wondering why I spent the minutes of my life listening to this amateur.
Really? All it does is make me think about Shrek.
Just came across this. Kim don't ever believe that you're not going to make it, that you can't succeed, or that it won't get better. That's the lie. NEVER GIVE UP. EVEN IF ITS A BAD PROGNOSIS. The best thing about the john cale version (other than everything) is that he doesnt go over the top with the chorus like literally everyone else does

Anche io sono italiano Ciao jack

This is the best version of this song that I have ever heard.

The Trasks The baffled king composing hallelujah
As he is is singing, it goes F to G, (the fourth and fifth chords in this key) then A minor, (the minor fall) then back to F which is a major chord.
I love this song this is the only version that gives me chills I'm obsessed with the line "she broke your throne she cut your hair and from your lips she drew the hallelujah"
That line refers to Delilah cutting Samsons hair in the bible.
I'm not religious, and haven't read the bible do you think you would be able to sum up that particular story for me?
+Nadine Stacey I've never actually read the story, but essentially when Delilah has Sampson's hair cut he loses his strength.
This is the best and powerful version, but I must admit the Christmas version will take some beating God Bless the song writers
is it me or this song sang by Jhon Cale is the legit best version of them all
