Heavy duty towing gone wrong!

- On today's episode, watch me handle a tricky job that resulted from a pretty hard crash on the freeway. Another tow truck was called to pull this guy off to safety, and in the process one of the boxes loaded with dirt fell forward. It is my understanding that this was not the fault of the tow truck driver, since the frame/wheel locks were compromised during the initial crash.
Either way, Hulk, my Peterbilt 50ton Century rotator, was there to save the day. First step was to remove the transfer that fell off the rails, then have my heavy wrecker pull the tractor attached to the first transfer out of the way. Once airborne, my Landoll was able to back up underneath so I can set it down and strap it for transport to Fontana.
While the yard in Fontana was pretty big with a ton of room, the specific spot he wanted the units was pretty tight. I positioned Hulk to where I can lift the transfer off the back from my Landoll, and carefully swing it 90 degrees counter clockwise back onto his trailer. All in a days work over here at Pepe's!

That's a great way to put it. I am always in rush mode but still have full control of the entire scene while doing everything safely.
Good enough or safe enough is never good or safe.. these guys are spot on from One professional in the industry to another..

I used to have my own ramps just like that along with another equipment and the pride you feel seeing the results of a good job is priceless.

To Pepe', and all of your crew, I have operated rollbacks and light duty wreckers equipped with twin cables and have been able to do some amazing things after I was trained by people who knew more than me. I have not done any heavy duty wrecker work, but I have driven heavy trucks for about 8-10 years. I know it is much more dangerous as well as definitely more difficult! I appreciate seeing you out there doing an amazing job!!!!!!!!!!!

Josh, this is not 'cockiness' nor is it 'bragging', this is called having con- fidence in what you are doing along w/ your crew.Someone in a reply to this video mentioned about towing in Canada.It's a whole new ballgame in British Columbia, Canada and the Eastern part of Canada with the type of weather encountered up North.They are dealing with multi axle B trains , heavy snows, rock slides,avalanches, mud slides and the same issues with the time limits to clear the wreckage and get the road open. Thanks to you and your crew for these fine videos!!

To Carlos, as a truck driver, and a former light/med duty wrecker operator, I can tell you. It is easy to back up while straight in a heavy truck, but it takes skill to back up around a corner. The only way to get better at backing while you turn is to practice in a space where you are not limited by obstacles around you. Gain some confidence in what you can do, and you won't have any more issues!

I appreciate seeing someone use a rotator as intended and to it’s potential. Too many companies are buying them these days and not putting in the time to learn how to properly operate them. I’ve seen a lot of unnecessary damage to the casualty during recoveries due to operator ignorance or laziness, not to mention the unnecessary abuse to the rotator itself for the same reasons. Thank you for representing the industry with class and for showing that while rotators have brute force, a little thought, finesse and precision go a long way when operating one.
Oh I love using it the way it should. You'd be surprised how many rotators are in California and how few real operators there are. So many "rotator guys" that are scared of working off the side or using the truck the way it should

It’s interesting to see the aftermath of these accidents. What happens after the wreck is cleared, The road reopens and everyone goes back to their business. Still a lot of work to be done that nobody sees. Fascinating stuff, you all look like real pros. I see safety as the top priority in everything you all do.

Great job man, lots of times at accidents it's the loads that do the damage not the trucks even when purpose built.
I drove and worked with heavy construction plant and low boys most of my working life, I would like to suggest using two guide ropes so the banks-men keep well away from the load, don't stand in the line of the boom because they most tip forward and go out of radius.
Lifting loads in yards may seam safe but you never know whats underground that could collapse, worked on a job in London UK and we found cellars right where the cranes would be.

Great job. Just like you I love all those tools and gadgets that make life easier but as I just operate a tilt and slide ( I think you call a rollback in the 'States ) I only have one locker so a lot of my kit lives on the cab floor!

I tried to pick up a 20 ft OT conatainer the other day.
I left it at the rail. they set it, it about flipped the truck sitting still.
They took it off. Opened it up. The load was strapped all to the drivers side. Rail said nothing wrong here. The way it was leaning. 27000 lbs.

I grew up in Colton but left in 1965 to join the Navy. I have fun trying to figure out where you guys are. You are a smart tram of dudes. It’s unbelievable the messes people get into, but they can’t stump Pepe’s!

In one of your other video's you told about using fire hose to protect your straps. So I bought some and use them on my straps for protection of them when hauling my old farm tractors to tractor shows. Sure is a lot nicer then using the chains. Thanks a lot for the idea.
