  • Using our Unit #10, Miller Industries Century 4024, 20 ton towing & recovery unit on a Peterbilt 337 to winch out a fully loaded truck and trailer combo that got stuck while attempting a turn in a residential area following his GPS, then helping him back out approximately half a mile and over a set of railroad tracks. Assisted by our Unit #15, a Peterbilt 337 with a Miller Industries Century LCG12 and a Feniex arrow board and lighting for traffic control. Thanks for watching and God bless. www.paypal.me/...

The job isn't done till the customer is on his way to his destination.
Ron, what sticks out to me throughout your videos is your calm professionalism, complete dedication to safety, and your approach of thinking your way through a job. I spent 17 years on the street as a volunteer paramedic in the Houston area from 1979 through 1996, and the tow operators there couldn't have been any more different. You have a good working relationship with your partners in EMS, the fire service, and law enforcement, and that makes a dangerous job go much better than it does when all the others want is to get the heck out of there and away. You have given me plenty of cause to hold you and your compadres in a lot more respect than I used to. My hat's off to you.

I spent 38 years as a police officer in a midwest city. Most of the tow truck operators I dealt with were clueless and would not take any advice from the cop since obviously I wasn't driving a tow truck. Securing a car on the flat-bed (roll back) with one chain and the winch was common. I didn't know that was wrong until I started watching Ron's videos. Getting them to clean up broken glass and debris was also like pulling teeth. Half of them didn't carry a broom, shovel, or oil dry. Sorry for the rant. Ron really shows how to do the job with courtesy and professionalism. Most people who need a tow know they messed up. They don't need to have their nose rubbed in it.

One of the tools that can be helpful is using Google maps and using the satellite view. I often use this to figure out what the best way to get into a particular shipper was. What side the docks are on etc. Can give you an idea of the best way to set yourself up to get in and out of the place. And oftentimes you would easily be able to see from above that this is a residential area and then that's not a good way to go.
Some of the stand-alone truck GPS is also have some problems and lack some of the handy features that come with Google maps or Waze for open highway use. Really I think you end up needing to use several tools to help you out here. Good old-fashioned truck Atlas, Google maps or waze, and truck based GPS.
The other thing that really helps and is simple to do is to simply make a phone call if you've never been to a particular place before call and talk to the shipping department and get someone to tell you what the best way is to get into the facility with a big rig.

Me too. And he had the added pressure of someone watching his every move not only from the front but the back too! I always reverse park and to park at home I have to reverse downhill, past 3 houses with their cars sticking out to my left, a lamp column to my right and an out of control tree/bush wanting to take my wing mirror! Sometimes there's a parked car to my right too, fun and games but you get used to it. I still think I'd have gone to pot in that situation and wobbled all the way back lol.

    • @farmerbrown3768

Of course a longer trailer is easier to back than a short one in this instance!

    • @jimmahr.4665
      @jimmahr.4665 3 роки тому +3

@@farmerbrown3768 I hear that here and there, but its not true. Length of the trailer doesn't matter. Its which trailer length you are used to.
Short ones react faster so they are easier to turn but then you have to correct them earlier (if you don't they get away from you fast) but less because they will react to the correction faster. So that is what throws you off when you change from one to the other.

Those little 20 ton units are a huge blessing in a small package. A few years ago, I pulled a load of ground plastic into a place that recycles it. There had been a storm overnight that left approximately 1/2" of glare ice in their bay. I had no problem backing in while near 80k lbs. Trying to get back out was another matter entirely. My tractor has full locking rears (not just a power divider), and I still couldn't get out. Our local heavy tow company sent out their 20 ton Century on a Sterling chassis. The operator surveyed the situation, dug the spades into the frozen pea gravel lot and within 10 minutes, my Classic was out of the hole and I was handing over my credit card. Luckily, the operator is my brother in law (and friend) so, I got the family discount lol!

I can certainly relate to that situation in my 38 years of trucking before I retired in 2015. I can’t count the number of times my GPS ‘lead me astray’! One particular time in the Midwest I had to back out down a road a bit more narrower than the one in this video for three miles. People were looking at me like I was crazy! Little did they know why I was there to start with! Great video as always, Ron. Stay safe and God Bless! (how do you like my new channel logo?)

Much like when I worked for a company that installed concrete tiled roofs for a major tile manufacturer. The council/developers designed the new housing areas to keep big rigs out, with traffic islands on every corner. Trouble was, the big rigs had to get in to make their deliveries. The ones that delivered to us, were fitted with a conveyor belt system for getting the tiles to the roof, so they HAD to reverse up to within about 3m of the front of the house we were doing the roof of. And the drivers were paid piece rates, not by the hour, so they just drove where they needed to go in order to get the job done, irrespective of traffic signs in the way, islands--including one that had only been concreted the day before-, council gardens etc, all got driven over whenever necessary--not our concern, as our job only started once the tiles arrived at roof level.

    Ah Satnav fails again.
Several years ago when the tech was still relatively new I remember a story here in the UK about a car following directions from Satnav.
It directed them down to a river with a ferry, but there were 2 problems.
    1. it was for pedestrians only; a rowboat in fact.
    2. It hadn't been running for a year.

Great video Ron. Watching him back out made me think about a load I took to KC one time when I was driving a 18 wheeler end dump. We had to go out on a bridge that was not finished. The bridge was about 2 miles long when it was done. We had to drive out on it unload then back off of it. It was a mile out on the bridge where I unloaded then backed out. What I was hauling was for making the top 2 inches of the deck of the bridge so the expansion joints was finished so they two metal plates over the that was about 2 feet wide and you had to have your tires on them. The whole thing was on a curve. I made it back out with one try.

Good driver, bad directions. I used to get out and walk when I felt directions were too messed up. You always get" ya jes tern right dere next to duh ...." Or the other one" you can fit, I drive my pickup through there all the time". Rand McNally books was my road"bible" then and GPS is NOT for trucks now.

@@siamsamblue30041 yeah well i got myself stuck in a residential area with a euro semi truck last week because of it and the lack of signs. i checked the place on google maps on satelite view and it looked fine and it was an easy access road on the north side, so i just punched the coordinates in my tomtom and didn't look at the route thinking it was fine. well it wasn't. the block there was brand new and the roads were not on the sat nav yet. it was considering the access road i saw a dirtroad and tried avoiding it through the residential area that didn't had a weight restriction and it should have. all fine and dandy until i got face to face with some of those rising pillars blocking the road and i was literally staring at the client's place. lemme tell you, as hard as it was getting in, it was 10x worse reversing out!

I'm not trying to down anybody but onetime this Swift driver ended up in an orange grove because the gps told him to go in there and plow up some orange trees and get stuck . That's a true story it really happened . The gps showed his destination in the middle of this 65K acre grove in Labelle fl.

When I drove a truck we didn't have any GPS. We had to call the shipper and receiver from the truck stop and get directions on how to get a truck into the facility. We had to know how to read truck routes using a motor carrier's atlas that had the truck roads highlighted in orange. We never went anywhere not in orange. Times have changed. I still would not trust a GPS in a truck. Better to call for directions. I love Ron's videos.

Great video, Ron! Maybe a review of route before each waypoint would be useful so as not to get caught with GPS failure. Either that, how about the programers have a "Big Truck" or "length" option so that anything above certain length would be directed a different way based upon the actual road AND length/width. I wouldn't think it be that difficult since it's just a matter of calculations and adding safety margin. "Hey Google! Get on it!"

    • @showjack1109
      @showjack1109 4 роки тому +1

I had a GPS with a "Truck" option, it took into account height restrictions, weight restrictions, and "no trucks" signs. It didn't take road curvature into account though, so you still had to be careful with your route planning, but it was a nice way to avoid any low overpass or low weight limit bridge.

A lot of drivers use the GPS that isn't meant for truck drivers, so its calculated for a passenger car. They make them for big trucks but they're a lot more expensive.

Joshua Hogg getting a big truck stuck in an area that's not supposed to be there especially in a residential area is the most sickening fealing you can have. I've done it once but thankfully I was able to get out without tearing up cars parked on the street with my tail swing. Kudos to this driver for realizing he screwed up and asked for help. This area was way smaller than the one I got myself into.

Sometimes the little things in life take us for quite the journey. Like following our GPS of into a residential area with a 53 foot trailer & a Hazmat load. Big No-No, but sometimes that how we end up. Looked like a load of Corrosives (probably car batteries). Not really an issue as the load did not spill. This driver probably learned more in an afternoon, than he did in weeks of driving. One of the biggest things he sharpened his skills in was the backing up technique. With a little help from Ron & a tug or 2 from Mike, he's back on the road again. Didn't look like he damaged anything as he didn't hit nothing, just got the drives off in the soft shoulder grassy area. Thank God the driver had enough wits about him to call for assistance before he took the electric pole down. That would have created all sorts of issues. We live & learn. I delivered a load out in the Grape Vine of California many years ago. Cafeteria style tables going to a small school. I had to unload off the side of the small highway as there was no room to maneuver on to the school grounds with the 53 foot trailer. Once unloaded, I ended up having to back up the highway at least 10 miles until I found a spot to safely turn around. Some days are days to remember. LOL

One other thing that could be helpful in an uncertain and unfamiliar area is to google earth the area for the feel and width of the road and looking for alternative routes. Keep in mind of unknown bridge clearances, weight limits and other scenarios that might have changed. Always good to have a plan B when possible.

    We all make mistakes.
The issue here is the guy is running a placarded (hazmat) load. He's required to have his route pre-planned. All drivers should do route planning, and using a good truck GPS, and even good street view for checking, but for hazmat, it's law.
Anyhow, nobody hurt, only a couple square yards of grass damaged, so no big deal...

noticed he was hauling a corrosive material (according to the placards on the trailer). with that type of load, you should never go through a residential area unless where you are delivering to is in that immediate area, as is the place the driver was headed to.

When I drove we always worked our route out with the old school maps and truck routes first, and if needed directions from the company we were delivering to, but always had to keep in mind that those directions usually came from a 4 wheeler driver that never had to drive something as large as a full size semi and trailer. There were several times I caught bad directions from office personnel that would have sent me into a residential area with power lines, trees, tight corners and low weight bridges. Thank God I never used those bad directions, lol

A number of drivers have driven into my neighborhood which is really tight. One hit a bit of my truck but it only knocked off a bit of rubber molding that was on the bumper, my truck is old so a little scratch like that was not big. It happened at like 3 am too. Its crazy how they don't realize their mistake as soon as they turn in and see cars lining the road and a sharp-ish turn. The neighborhood lies next to the intersection of two mildly heavy roads and an entrance on both so I am assuming they think they are turning on to the main road. Its crazy how good of drivers they are being able to get out of it. I had to move my truck and another but they were able to get out, which was mighty impressive.
