I understand the hate the game gets, but aside from a few frustrating missions, I really enjoyed this game. You can find it for about $5. Def worth checking out at that price
This kind of proves the point. DN3D really was a genre defining game, up there with Doom, Quake and Half Life and to see its sequel turn out to be a wet far after over a decade of development is depressing. It really deserved better than "worth checking out for $5".
Honestly, if the 2001 E3 demo version of the game that leaked online recently had been completed and come out in 2002 or so, I think Duke Nukem would still be a household name... among gamers at least. That version (which Broussard killed) was about 60% complete, and just needed the last few levels. What might have been, right?
the 2001 E3 demo version is playable or at least the first part of it is, I'm guessing you know this though seen as you seem to know your stuff. Such a shame the original vision didn't get released on schedule, never has the world (FPS genre) needed Duke more than it does now.
I played Duke Nukem till death in 1996 like from the time I got up to the time I went to sleep when it wasn't a school day, that and Doom II both games at the time were the most realistic shooters but Duke Nukem raised it up a notch with it's more grittier and more violent tone yet also being somewhat comedic too and being fowl in terms of language, at that time in was a new standard in gaming with it's more mature nature.
You know something to be honest I never exactly heard of Duke Nukem and it's ashamed that This franchise failed to be a successfully game in the 2011 era but we sure hope that Duke Nukem would have another chance someday In the future but we seen doom 2016 gets another chance but why not duke Nukem its a really a shame that nobody else really knows who is he and I'm wondering if they're was gonna be reboot just like doom 2016 but anytime soon I wonder someday in the future he would make a comeback around someday.
Duke nukem IS a gaming icon, but like many gaming icons (ie master chief, tomb raider, etc) he had a rough downfall (with duke nukem forever) and never got back up.
Duke Nukem was my introduction into multiplayer FPS. I have good memories trying to battle people on my 56k modem 😅The network was called TEN. I was usually outmatched since people had DSL and using a mouse while my laggy self was trying to keep up with a gamepad. Still good times though.
I can understand why Duke Nukem could not succeed in these times. Oversexualization of women is frowned upon these days. If anyone wants more details, Matt Muscles did a great episode on the development of Duke Nukem Forever.
decent but over hyped/too eagerly anticipated and it should of been better. Have you played the DNF2001 restoration project? First slice is available on Mod DB (DukeNukemRestoration-FirstSlice-1.0)
Pretty good video, but you missed a couple parts. Like the trilogy of PS1 games, DN3D expansions and Manhattan Project. Also, Duke’s love for “babes”, I’ve always seen, as the devs just integrating good ol’ fratboy humor, which is the game’s target audience.
I still long for a Doom 2016 with Duke as the protagonist. They even have a somewhat similar main character. Doomguy couldn't be bothered to follow his own plot and would punch out screens just to get to the action faster. If that doesn't make you think of Duke as well, you don't know the Dukester.
The Forever did not meet the hype and expectation, but also time went on, and this type of humor and pastiche is a niche now, and no amount of shareholders will "bet on duke". And there is no that type of pop culture to make it from current times. Not mentioning who has the rights and all that.
Development hell did ultimately kill this franchise, in that time they could have made multiple Duke Nukem games. Trying to put all of your ideas into one game isn’t a good idea. I would have a loved a Quake and an Unreal engine Duke to play on my Dreamcast/PS2, such a missed opportunity. But i still think the franchise can come back. I would like to see it get a Doom 2016/ Wolfenstein New Order treatment. It sure can do with a reboot. A more modernised realistic/ serious tone, redesigned enemies with an aged Duke and some supporting characters sure can bring this franchise back. Along with a remake of the original game. What would work now is to have a Duke with more character development and a story to tell. Not much is known about Duke. We know more about Master Chief and DoomGuy despite them not talking much.
Given the culture war climate, a new Duke game might be a hard ask and would undoubtedly be hounded by activist weirdos into attempted cancelation like Hogwarts Legacy. However, I think it's what the world needs. The new PC culture needs some rebuking. Don't focus on the current gaming trends, just make a simple story with simple and fun mechanics, with all the Duke cheese we've all come to enjoy. The game having its tone straight from the 90s, in all of its B-rate action movie splendor, would be welcomed. It just needs to be done right. Forever could've been good but it wanted to do a lot and was ultimately underwhelming. If it had stayed on track in 1997, we'd probably have more Duke games today rather than DNF becoming a vaporware joke before finally releasing as a real one.
Now I'm imagining a rebooted Duke as this ultra-based chad who's cartoonishly hyper-liberal about everything. The kinda guy who'd dropkick someone out a window because they assumed someone's gender. PC Principal from South Park X 10.
I would Love another entry. FuK SJW and White Knighting. Double down ultra hard on everything the character stands for and don't hold back on anything R-Rated, i gladly buy at full price.
I think that there is a possible redeeming part, and it would require both humility and changing the way of looking at the character. It would need to be done at a fast enough pace, with a limited scope if possible. And Duke has yo somehow change with the tines. Whether it will be focuses on adding things that don't at first look like masculine things as a clash, such as in the earlier game he was apparently into Opera. Finding what can be done without being too toxic. And not taking him too seriously, as fitting of a charge from another time. Personally I quite like a trend of fake Duke quotes, where he says things that are oddly wholesome, or even feminist, still with his signature confidence. I also think that he could be into babes, without it coming across as looking down on women. It would be like Knuckles from the Sonic Boom show, being a feminist meat head.
They should make a Duke Nukem game where he's not the protagonist, nor the antagonist, but as a background character that's a bumbling idiot that's fully capable of taking out those threats as he drops the one liner, and you play as the straight man protagonist that just deals with absurd shit. Give you control of Duke for maybe the final boss fight but past that, just have him be comedic fodder. Like reverse God of War it, have the main protagonist be his daughter and Duke is just controllable A.I.
Wtf is with the random digs at stuff? This was not as bad as your wolfenstein video, but these nods to wokism are not appreciated. The real world is not twitter. Hell, most gamers are not on twitter. So we don't need this "old stuff bad" and "outdated tropes" and "damaging stereotypes" comments. It really takes the viewer out of the content of the video. Leave the political takes to twitter, or you will see a portion of your viewers leave. Many are fed up with politics in our escapism.
@mfmageRaids I see what you’re saying, but I don’t think this narration was really that bad. The real problem is a lack of moral consistency, for example: Duke Nukem = bad due to glorification of narcissistic douche, toxic masculinity, and female objectification. GTA = awesome due to depiction of human-on-human gun violence, homicide, gang warfare, toxic masculinity, female objectification in strip clubs, theft, battery, drug addiction, etc. So next time Nerdstalgic brings up GTA, I expect some consistency and courageous digs at their damaging stereotypes (which weren’t present in their last GTA video).
Fun fact: canonically, Duke 3D takes place in 2007.
I understand the hate the game gets, but aside from a few frustrating missions, I really enjoyed this game. You can find it for about $5. Def worth checking out at that price

Well being worth it at $5 is hardly an endorsement… especially when many people agree games like Elden Ring are more than worth $70
duke nukem forever definitely had very good online multiplayer dukematch (deathmatch) for Xbox Live!
I had fun and it got a solid laugh out of me every now and then.

So what I got from this video wasn't that Duke Nukem killed his own franchise more that it was killed by Broussard's rampant ego.
Sad but true, because DNF the original version had potential to be a great game.

Duke Nukem needs the Doom (2016) treatment sooner or later.
Duke had several smaller games between 3d and forever, mostly on the playstation but a few were brought to n64.
I can see duke nukem coming back, however, Duke Nukem Forever should be a harsh reminder of how not to make a game in a once beloved franchise
“Toxic masculinity” “female objectification”. Nerdstalgic hiring aspiring kotaku writers with their material lately.

Perhaps Duke could maybe, I dunno, be rebooted? Episode 1: This is our planet. Episode 2: The alien babe from outer space.
Duke Nukem: Time to Kill was honestly one of the most fun games at the time. Played that to death
