- UPDATE (October 2020): well, since this is by far my most viewed video I thought it was about time to make a small update in the description. Regarding the video itself, I must admit, as many of you have already stated in the comments, that there are quite a few mistakes here und there, like the "Moger Roore" reference, for instance, and also many missing easter eggs. I really don't think I'm going to release an updated video on this specific topic anymore though. Instead, I've just recorded a walkthrough of the whole game showing pretty much every secret/trick/easter egg shown in this video (apart from those that require cheating in order to be accessed). Original description: Well, here I made this compilation of every easter egg, funny reference and hidden message* I know in Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition. Sorry if the video edition is not top-notch, I tried to do my best hehe. I really hope you enjoy it!

= please note that I didn't include in the compilation any of the hidden messages meant to be seen using the night vision goggles, as they are not easter eggs, but give hints about ingame secrets.

Me too. When it was released, I locked myself in the basement, and so far didn't see the light of day. The game is very captivating. I'm still in search of new easter eggs.
Oh, I knew about the photocopier for quite a while, as well as many of those corpses of other characters, but it's all of those "You aren't supposed to be here, stop cheating!" messages that I missed and never knew existed at all.
28 years later now and I just learned that you can shoot pipebombs to blow them up

Is a shame, their are a tribute, not a copy right problem.
Mostly because eastereggs were some fun stuff the devs put in after the game was finished. Today Devs struggle to get games ready for launch and often have to patch a game just to make it run, so they have no time for secrets and fun

Off the "Enterprise" bridge, there's a ... bathroom! Not only is that odd (these are never shown on Star Trek, ever) but...when near the toliet, Duke quips, "Hmmm, the captain's log".
There's another secret in Hotel Hell (E3L8). Inside the hotel, in the wrecked bathroom there's a closed stall. If you look through the gap in the door, up near the ceiling, you'll see a line of pale green letters. By moving the letters up and down in the Build Editor, you can unscramble the message, which reads, "Duke Was Here 2017." The message likely got squished when the mapper forgot about the message and moved the ceiling.

Hey, I know this is late comment but the USS Dallas (SSN-701) is a real submarine. I used to see her on the dry dock when I was in the Navy. She was recently decommissioned after 37 years of service.

This used to be on the original "Duke Nukem" site back in the day, but the level "Going Postal" was based on a real building that the development team would take their mail to and wasn't too far from the studio. :) (A developer admitted it during an interview about making Duke Nukem 3D)

What i remember is that it was an expensive game for a long time. But i live in Southamerica.
In Pigsty right where the regular exit is you can find an entire jury hanging from the wall. This is both the reference to the term "hung jury" and to Twelve Angry Men movies.

The Enterprise Bridge is one of, if not my favorite, secrets in the game. I kept triggering the door to open but I couldn't find it. When I finally did and saw I was on the Enterprise Bridge I just lost it. Whenever I would play multiplayer with my friend, I would just go hide in there because he had no idea how to get to it, haha.
For some reason, in the N64 version, the stormtrooper Luke is replaced with Yoda. Maybe they thought it was too graphic to show a dead Luke, or maybe they just thought Yoda was more iconic, not sure.

Fernito69 Haha, that IS pretty weird! I found this video because I was searching up the Duke Nukem 3D OST and I had to watch it. I have very fond memories of exploring the N64 version (even though it was very watered down and missing a lot of levels) trying to find all of the secrets in it.

Another Beavis and Butt-Head reference is in Duke Burger: In the kitchen next to the fryers, there is a can of worms, referencing the episode Late Shift where the duo french fry some worms and then pass them off as curly fries

+Apocalypse The Third Duke Nukem Forever was by no means a terrible game. It was actually an alright game and I actually did enjoy it. What bothered people about it though was the weapon system, health system and linear level design. DNF just became a victim of trying to be like other games with regenerating health etc. Had they leaned more in the direction to incorporate mechanics more akin to 3D with some modernisation it would've been better. There's no reason they can't incorporate what made Duke 3d so great. :)

LameDuke and all those still unreleased betas have more references to DN1 and DN2. That's one of the reasons of why I want to play them.

In point of fact: The golden ring with the Roger Moore anagram is a reference to the television series "The Saint" in which he also played a spy. The golden ring is actually a halo (the logo of the show) ;-)

when i first played i was too young to understand any of the easter eggs aside from the luke skywalker one.
Duke Nukem is a mixture of tree persons: He has George Nada's attitude, Terminator's nerves + endurance and Duff Man's charisma.
Duke is essentially a walking homage to 80s action heroes, especially those played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I played duke nukem 3d last year, and it is one of the best fucking games ive ever played. Simply badassery from start to finish.
despite games like this not aging too well it really highlights the best of the gaming industry, back in the day when game devs really cared about their games and fans....

10:14 Notice that Duke says "We meet again, Dr. Jones" in a similar style with Darth Vader's "We meet again, Obi-Wan" quote.
Also, Harrison Ford plays both Dr. Jones and Han Solo.
Some one might have already said this but In Death Row, this was the first level that used ," I guess he didn't escape from L.A." Near the beginning of the level in one of the cells there is a bed you can move that leads to Snake Plissken from the Escape from LA movie.
In the stage Fahrenheit, the fire truck that has "451" written on it isn't the only reference to the book. The music for that level is called 233C. 233 degrees Celcius is 451 degrees Fahrenheit.
My favorite out of all these is when Duke say "It's time to kickass and chew bubblegum. And I'm all out of gum".

Sam King is right, The Saint was a TV show in the 60s, the character Roger Moore played was Simon Templar, the halo appears above the head of the stick figure in the intro
22:05 I've never seen anyone point this out, but "Hanger [sic] 18" is a reference to heavy metal band Megadeth, who would later officially cover the Duke Nukem theme.
It's actually not a reference to Megadeth, rather it's a reference to the reference which that Megadeth song is named after..
Hangar 18, is a real life hanger which conspiracy theorist purport to contain UFO technology and where UFO tech is stored, and is where the govt carried out project sign, project grunge and project bluebook (official studies of unidentified flying objects) back during in the 1940s and 1950s.
This easter egg referencing the real life hanger 18 and not the megadeth song, is backed up by the other text on the box, how the item in it originally came from Roswell, and how it's shipped to W.P.A.F.B, OH, which stands for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base which is home to Hanger 18 and which is located in the state of Ohio (OH).
20 years after playing it and I'm still supprised and impressed.
You missed a secret near the end of XXX Stacy, where you get inside an apartment that seems to belong to the unabomber: his picture is there, along with a disarmed pipebomb

But I love how foreshadowing it is what with the idea of being at a church-ish area, to which then Blood more or less in the first level of the first episode has the common monk enemy first appear at a church-ish area. U could say then monks from Rise of the Triad were resurrected otherwise. Lol
That or chronologically, the monks appear in the 1920s of Blood, then World War 2(?) within 'Triad', finally in 1996 in Death Row.

Awesome video, Fernito! Here's a bit of trivia: in regards to the Beavis and Butthead reference in Duke Burger, Randy Pitchford (Currently the CEO of Gearbox Software) did the Butthead voice!
you missed a few things
dukes line "hail to the king baby" is an evil dead quote
at the duke burger level in the office, there's 3 photos of 3 characters from men in black
then on the level darkside, there's a corridor where if you shoot the enemy in the throat, duke says "you're not my father"
on the Hollywood set level there's a where you'll see 3 posters, featuring 3 of mortal kombats creators, including Dave boon
There's a part in the train station where if you shoot a reptilian looking alien in the throat, duke says "get over here" this is a reference to Scorpion, as his famous like is said, a character much similar to reptile is killed, and a train station was a mortal kombats level
when duke says "groovy" after picking up a weapon, that's yet another reference to evil dead
then there's a poster of one of the aliens from the Simpsons at Hollywood holocaust
There's also a photo of Yoda and another Jedi, and mace windu at the duke burger level
Pretty sure the game can't tell whether you,re shooting something in the throat or in the feet.

Apparently I found this video 10 years late :) My guess that the Valdeez-2 does not just reference the Exxon Valdez spill, but more specifically Waterworld, where the bad guys ship is called the DEEZ, which later turns out to be the actual Exxon Valdez.
Just an FYI, the picture of a developer you weren't sure about is George "Washington" Broussard.
Fun fact: Bruce Campbell's "Ash" got his complete movie dialog from this game.

The Moger Roore "gold ring" is a halo. It's for The Saint, not James Bond. Goldfinger starred Sean Connery.
It's incredible how personalized everything is, how much thought they put into this. It's not commercialized, not aiming at appealing to the lowest common denominator. It's just FPS fans developing a game according to their own taste and influences.
It's because back then, a game like this was developed by around ten people. Today, it's not uncommon that a big name game can include fifty, maybe a hundred people. It's easier to make your mark when you're designing an entire level by yourself. That wouldn't happen today.
I LOVED this game back in the day!! So awesome. This brings back so many memories!

Fun trip down memory lane. :) I used to love playing through DN3D, the "Atomic Edition", and even a few fan-made maps (though I guess there weren't that many back in the 90's, unlike with Doom). I actually crafted two entire custom episodes for Doom ("Darkhell" and "Blakhell"), but I never made anything for DN3D. No idea why. I SHOULD have at least made 1-3 maps for Duke3D! :)

9:56, coincidentally, there's also supposed to be an upcoming Indiana Jones video game that's supposed to be a FPS as well, and the name of the game is called Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and its due date for release is unknown, though some of the people that are working on this game are behind the two newest Wolfenstein games, as well as some middle 2000s FPS hits, such as The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Darkness.
Amazing! Its this attitude from the developers that gives the idea of the immersion they produced in you. Great game.

I'll add two more: This MID that is playing in E3L7 (Fahrenheit) is called 233c. 233 C is 451 F :) E4L1 (It's Impossible) is taking place in IMF (Improbable Mission Facility), but the shortcut is of course reference to Impossible Mission Force, actual name of the team in M:I since sixties.
In the 20th Anniversary world tour which was released in 2016 you've got the audio comentary from the devs and one of them was that "back then you didn't had to report for easter eggs it's just a bunch of guys making a game whatever happened, happened"
Now it takes me an hour to finish a level cause of the commentaries
Some notes I saw in the video but weren't explicitly mentioned or missed. "IMF" - the "Improbable Mission Force", is a reference to the "IMF" - "Impossible Mission Force" from Mission:Impossible. In the Area 51 area with the Independence Day ship, if you open the doors/wall, it is a big launch tube, similar to in Independence Day.

Actually Moger Roore and ring are referance to The Saint and not James Bond. Since all other references also are for old tv shows: Mission Impossible, Avengers etc.

The abreviation IMF may also be a reference to Mission Impossible, where the secret unit was named "Impossible Mission Force".
Props for knowing the game "Rise of the Triad". Most people who make videos on Duke 3D say it's just a monk.
Only thing I don't get is where I thought you made a mistake....Duke 3D came out for PC in 1996, the reference to Snake Plisskin (15:26) was Escape from L.A. which the movie came out in 1997. Did I miss something or am I wrong?
@@TJ_Actual1 Escape from LA came out in August '96, the Duke expansion "Atomic Edition" in November. They were really on top of their references, there.

In shrapnel city, where the trays of food is floating around on the water threw a curtain, one day I glitched inside of it , has writing on the wall inside never seen anyone ever have it on a video.
I love how you can hear the Terminator moving through the police station just like in the movie too, taking out pig cops like a machine

looking at the bridge, it's based off of the Enterprise D ( I wasn't sure as to which Enterprise you were referring to). in fact the entire map is based on the Enterprise D. as for the show, well that's likely Star Trek TNG.

immediately after that he mentions that that sketch is found in other levels, but made more sense for them to point out this easter egg in the post office level, since the unabomber is known for the package bombs they sent via the post office.
