- By all accounts, Sunset Overdrive should have had major success that spawned a multi-year franchise. But for some reason, after the initial release of Sunset Overdrive, it never became the runaway success developers wanted. So what exactly happened that made Sunset Overdrive just a flash in the pan?

Man, what a missed opportunity for Microsoft to turn this into one of their main franchises. It is such a fun game.
They were also offered Spider-Man game rights at some point which they also passed on. They had insomniac right there that could’ve been churning out spider man and sunset overdrive sequels every few years and man the Xbox would have been in a much better place. Oh well. They have gamepass now and obsidian so at least they’re not that stupid.

I loved _Sunset Overdrive,_ the gameplay was unique, the visuals were very original with a lot of humor, character and style and the soundtrack was an absolute BANGER. It's exactly the sort of game that doesn't sell very well and gets left without a much-deserved sequel.

Sunset Overdrive is an amazing game. I always think of it as a modern Americanized version of Jet Set Radio.

Spider-Man is way too lucrative for Insomniac and Sony, end of story. I do wonder why they didn’t release a port on PlayStation though since they now own the IP.
Cuz they own the IP but not the game, same case as Bayonetta, Sega owns the IP but Nintendo owns the last two games.

The story, the collectables, the side missions, the customization, everything was awesome about this game
Sunset Overdrive was literally the only game I wanted to play more than anything that xbox one had the exclusivity on, I didn't like the prospect of buying one console for one game very much so that was it for me for a while.
Then the steam release happened, 100% the game and didn't regret even one second of it, just so damn fun moving around and blowing hordes away.
The music is absolute punk rock heaven too, I'm on the run by Bass Drum of Death being my fave as well as I'm not an animal by The Blind Shake.

I only ever played this when it got a PC port and honestly still is my favorite game in the "zombie" (well mutant) game genre. It felt like a weird mix of COD Zombies, JSRF, THPS, and Dying Light.

I genuinely loved sunset overdrive, played it to death when it came out, felt really fresh for the time and was a smooth flowing game I could zone out into sometimes and sweat out something cool if I wanted to :)
This game was one of my favorites from the 8th generation! The gameplay was just so much fun, I remember many times forgetting to do some missions because I was so distrated traversing the world and keeping my movement chain going! I would kill to get a sequel to this game, it's so stylish and fun to play with great gameplay and a funny story. This game feels like a combination of GTA, Jet Set Radio Future, and Tony Hawks Pro-Skater and it's full of creativity and style.
If there was a sequel for Sunset Overdrive I would absolutely play it day one. Me and everyone of my friends that have played it, including friends that don't typically play more than COD or Madden, loved it and always talk about how we wish there was another one whenever it comes up

One of my favorite games ever.
I go back and play this game every once in a while. It always comes back in my mind when there’s a lul in releases. A second game would be incredible but I lost all hope of it when Sony bought insomniac. It doesn’t feel like a game they’d green light

I got sunset overdrive from the library years and years ago but couldn’t finish it, just recently got it and I absolutely loved it and finished just about everything in the game. Really hoping for a sequel
The color and art direction was brilliant, the pc version hold fine in 4k, i dont want to spoil, but the dlc Boss was incredible blew my mind away.

I never played it, but when it was announced, it immediately caught my eye. Next to most FPS games of its time, which color palette consisted of only browns and grays, Sunset Overdrive is colorful. If your modern-day FPS has tons of colors, thank Sunset Overdrive for it.
I'm actually playing it right now, it's surprisingly fun and has a lot of parkor elements

Team Fortress came out WAY before Sunset Overdrive and that was a very colorful/playful FPS. So no, you don't have Sunset Overdrive to thank for colorful FPS games lol. Ngl, I hadn't even heard of this game prior to this video and I was a pretty heavy gamer at the time it was released.

This game had absolutely no impact on bringing color to FPS I can tell you that right now. Halo is one of the most influencial FPS games ever. Both it's HUD and controller mapping went on to be a standard for basically all FPS games. It's by no means a dull game with many bright colors in it as well.
Borderlands is another one that stands out along with so many other games. Sunset Overdrive offered nothing to the industry. It was an attempt to take tony hawk rail grining and combine it with FPS/Combat elements. It clearly was not a huge success. Fortnites mix of building and FPS is a better example of combining two things and the result blending very well. It literally took Minecraft and Call of Duty and made them one. Something that is much harder to do than it sounds as Sunset Overdrive clearly shows.
It's by all means okay to have enjoyed the game. Games are for fun so as long as you enjoyed it that's good. I'm just saying it wasn't what you would consider a success in the gaming industry and didn't really influence much besides others learning what mistakes not to make.
I wish this game would’ve been apart of Xbox’s fps boost program. 30fps doesn’t do that game justice when you’re zipping around fast.
This was the first game I played when I got my series X with gamepass as I had a ps4 last gen.

I remember this game and Wolfenstein The New Order were my first 2 games I purchased with my OG Xbox One. Both amazing games and every so often I still play Sunset Overdrive on my Series X🙂
The 2000's was full of strange games, but a lot of them were so weird I feel that's what made them awesome. I think this was the last game of it's kind. Now games are either very artsy, serious, or you get an indie game.
I actually loved sunset overdrive and the dlc was fun too, I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to play an awesome game that haven't played before.

This video is a year old but it recently came out from some Insomniac devs and they said that Sunset Overdrive paid for itself but Insomniac made no money from it even after it come out on PC. game sales had been pretty bad.

Sadly the Online Co-op was never added to the PC release for whatever reason 😔

@@jocg9168 I had a look, I'm not using a specific Proton version. You could try a different version of Proton, check Sunset Overdrive's Steam Discussions or ProtonDB.

We do not need a re rerelease of sunset on PS4/5 or a sequel, it will waste money, time, and energy. Insomniac should keep on producing bangers like the next spider man game or Wolverine.

@@jocg9168 what yah mean ? Doesn't work on your STEAM DECK ? I haven't done any changes to the Deck, no specific files or tricks. I know it's not even compatible with the Deck if I recall correctly. I just installed it and it worked perfectly. What issues are you having ? I suggest using the Comparability mode and changing it to like experimental or different versions. Usually games that don't work I just use the Comparability mode and usually it does the trick. Not guaranteed but worth a shot
Xbox one killed sunset overdrive. Just like it killed Ryse, Quantum Break , recore, and I don’t know how many other new IPs that were unlucky to come out with the worst Xbox .

Not sure if that was the driving factor to be honest. I remember when this game was released I was really excited for it. I was 14 and the perfect age to enjoy it. At the time something felt like it was missing, the humour not always landing and the creeping feeling that insomniac were trying too hard to be wacky or zany which plagued the 2010s. It meant that people just didn't pay attention or land quite right. That was the mood of the time and theres no way to prove it, but that seemed to be everyones reaction, not just mine. Even youtubers commented on it in their lets play series
Yeah I remember the general discourse online was that the game was trying too hard to be wacky at a time when lolsorandom humor was on its way out. Despite offering a unique setting and gameplay, it didn't do enough to differentiate itself from games like Saints Row.

I know it's a crazy thought, but a possibility is that insomniac themselves just don't want to work on sunset overdrive right now. They are clearly really passionate about working on Spider-Man and seem to be marvel fans in general, so they might just want to focus on SM and Wolverine right now.
I finally got to play this game when I got an Xbox One a little over a year ago. Loved it. From humor, pop culture references, and solid gameplay. Start to finish it was fun as hell. It's destined to be a cult classic and remembered fondly by those of us that have played it.

This really is an underrated gem. I got it upon release and loved it. Recently picked it up on Steam just to play it again. The only missed opportunity was to make the campaign co op. 1 to 4 players would have been fun.

Sunset Overdrive was the last time I had a certain type of fun in a game since Saints Row 3 in a way I can't describe.

I loved this game when it came out and still talk about it with others. Especially those that are coming to the Xbox platform for the first time and want a good single player game that's not serious. It's been in my top 20 list since release!

Because this applies with everything thats being put on the market.
It gets hyped to a certain point and during release it slowly fades in irrelevancy only for the next hypetrain to exist.
I can mention a handful of games that met a similiar fate.
RAGE 2, Red Faction, Homefront Revolution, SpecOps The Line, Watch Dogs 2, Evolve, No Mans Sky, Prototype.
These are not bad games. They were just products of their time.

I just recently played it on PC. It's one of the very few Xbox exclusives that I was actually interested in. Simply one of the best open world games I have played and enjoyed in recent years. Definitely deserves a sequel.
It was a great game and somehow managed to pull off the best open world ever made in a videogame!
sunset overdrive never left my mind.
saw the poster on release in my local gamestop and it got me really interested, but i was only around 10 years old when it came out and i had no xbox, so i couldn‘t play it.
a few years later, i finally played it when i got the xbox game pass for pc and i absolutely loved it, being in my punk rock phase at the time.
i still play it from time to time having a blast while doing so.

i ended up hating sunset overdrive. too edgy, dumb and repetitive.
If I had a nickel for every colorful yet mature game with an experimental gameplay style, 4th Wall breaking humor and kickass music just vanished in the public eye, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't alot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Such a fun game. Took me back to the days of Jet Set Radio as a kid. Come to find out the developers took inspiration from Jet Set Radio. Was really hoping for a sequel, the game had a pretty strong start, would've loved to see what else they can add or improve on for the series

I still play sunset overdrive to this day. it is sad that we would never see a second installment or even new DLCs for the game
I really enjoyed this game on Xbox a few years ago. The main failure was there was no real way to start a new campaign. It just had no way to reset. Super weird.
sunset was so dope and for the longest time i kept coming back to it whenever i got that free trial of xbox game pass or it was only 1 pound but every time my PC ran poorly and i dont know why i but i prayed that something changed in my PC but finally after getting a GTX 1650 and AMD 3500 (sadly no SSD and only 8 gbs of ram) i instantly went to the steam store and nabbed it and installed and played it and my god its so fun it has the chaos from ratchet and clank and the gun upgrades from there too but the open world and the character design etc its just an amazing game that needs a sequel so that it can be played on new hardware and so that we can jump back into that amazing work... come on insomniac ive played your games for years from spyro to ratchet and clank and each game never made me go "this is bad" and never touch it again they all make me want to come back even the spyro remaster (i know it was remastered by toys for bob) but the fact that it makes me instantly buy it on steam and play it and 100% each game says something to insomniacs game design

Bought and replayed recently on pc and it brought back all the memories. Just as entertaining as I remembered! Unfortunately it did leave some thing to be desired in 2022 next to some other big games so if there is a sequal they will have to do it big. I enjoy the game just being a fun one and done but I would love a modern update to it from Sony and a big dlc packedge with it

Honestly i loved this series, and would love to see a sequel. Yeah some parts were a bit odd, cringe or just plain annoying. But all in all i loved it, but mostly for the weapons and overall feel.
Best game i ever played on XBox, loved everything about this game. As a fan of zombie/monster survival game this one was so great. I really hope there is gonna a sequel. As well for Days Gone.

Such an underrated game. Got it with a console bundle and then rebought it on Steam.
Lots of customization with no microtransactions. Cool style, fun action, visuals, sound, etc. It was a blast.
I am on about my 100th play through including expansions, owned on xbox for ages and now i play it on pc, i would love a second game as this is one of my all time favourites.

I worked for a major retailer when this game launched. A few months after said launch I took over as the buyer for gaming software. This time was among a handful that needed addressing from a stock standpoint. The thing about physical game sales is that new release sell out performance (back then) was very heavily focused on the first 30 days (about 80% of lifecycle sales). This is because just like news cycles everyone tended to move on to the next thing. The mess left to clean up took 3 years and discount funding from MS in excess of any purchase revenue they ever got from us. Of my 8 year gaming software buying career this was easily the 2nd worst financial blunder on a new title (no man’s sky no1).
I highly suspect this plays a lot into the reason the IP appears dead, publishers get nervous about rehashing franchises that bomb

A big part of the reason is that the same key creatives that worked on SO got rolled onto Spider-Man immediately after, and while SO might have been considered a modest success by some metrics, Spider-Man went on to become one of the biggest games of the generation, leading to expansions and sequels and now Wolverine. So the question is not whether or not SO2 could be worth making, but rather if it's worth diverting resources from that could be spent on much bigger IP.
A game way ahead of its time held back by console limitations of the time. It would be crazy to see a movement 3rd person movement shooter in current gen, it would be way less clunky and so much more smooth.
