Probably the best shooting mechanics ever in an FPS up until that point. While the writing was lackluster, it looked and played GREAT. I loved how each faction had it's own unique style that fit with whatever dungeon you encountered then in. A must play on the hardest difficulty.
dude your content is so good, keep it up, im sure your videos will pop off even harder than the valhala one in no time, specially because you freaking deserve it ❤
40:00 Yeah, I'm just recently picking RAGE back up and noticed how the environment looks like one big JPEG texture covering everything. Looking at Dan Hagar's bathroom and John Marshal's jail cell/supplies area, they looked like Google map pictures of entire rooms stretched over untextured 3D models and objects, which almost gave the objects a "2D" feel and look to them until you move around. The way it looked was almost a step away from what Ocarina of Time did with their pre-rendered rooms and Castle Town (one big untextured green box with a JPEG picture wrapping around it to look like a "3D space"). Apparently, the megatextures used in the game, if entirely uncompressed, would take up 1TB of space on a hard drive. I really wish that was an option...
Yeah only downside I was shocked when credits started rolling, just finished playing & I started to like the game & got attached to the story even though it was just random plots 😄 gameplay was worth it though
The texture pop-in can be 99% eliminated with launch options, which I've written a guide for on Steam. You need an Nvidia GPU though. (You've probably seen that AMD cards got shafted for id Tech 5 games.) Interestingly, there is ZERO pop-in when using higher end integrated graphics, because it was designed for the consoles of the day that used similar iGPU technology.
I played the game without any expectations about 1 or 2 years after release. I liked it very much and still fondly remember that unique experience. Cool video, thanks.
I think that's exactly the case with this game. Take the game on its own merits, removed from the hype and the developer's history and you're left with a genuinely unique experience.
Hey. I used to always invert my mouse, for years and years. But I changed around 2004. Let's just say it took a while. Good on you for keeping it up. :)
I had a ton fun with this game, and still have to this game. even at launch, it was working great on my rig at the time. I think I was using a gtx 460, but the secret was having well defragged HDDs. I honestly would suggest players go for it if they never touched it. Remember that you are not playing it for the story, but for the gameplay and especially shooting and movement mechanics. Oh, and that megatexturing thing is a thing of beauty when looking at vistas. All the different graphical elements are flow together organically, they don't feel stack up one another just to add detail.
Personally I would have liked for them to simply reduce the size of the open world and cut the car combat altogether. It was simply not engaging enough and they obviously spent a good amount of time on making it. But even now that those small sewer side missions are included (used to be DLC), there still is barely anything out there to find that isn't required missions. More interesting stuff to find in the open world would have been way more important than tacking on some random mini games.
This game was picked on by people before they even had the chance to play it. I've lived through that quite a few times, it's often due to some game journos setting the tone and everyone just going along with it. The best example in the entire gaming industry is Blue Stinger, it's best if you've never played it. Watch all the trailers you can find, look at all the printed commercials, E3 demos etc. And once you have a good idea of what this game is about based on pre-release material, have a looks at ANY review... Whether it's from a "journalist" back then in magazines or even a youtuber. It's like they have have all been infected with a mind bug that makes no sense. It's the equivalent of me, reviewing Gran Turismo 8 and complaining about the lack of turbo boosts and bananas... Rage probably suffered the same fate, a journalist said some stupid sh!t about it, it tainted everyone who read it and they produced bias material that tainted everyone else's opinion. Thief (2016) is hated to a degree that sounds completely surreal to anyone who actually played the game, it's like I've been transported into another dimension where Thief (2016) killed someone's mom lol. If I say that I liked this game, people throw holy water at me ^-^ It's a great game, they're completely out of their mind, I'm 100% okay with people not liking it but the amount of vitriol is unbelievable. Blue Stinger, Rage, Thief, Nomad Soul, all good games gamers completely missed out on either to partake in a meme or because of a massive shared psychosis Shout out to all the people in the world who make up their own mind, you guys rock 👍 You might not have liked it, but YOU did not like it, not someone else not liking it on your behalf
I never heard of Blue Stinger but I know exactly what you mean about the reception and word of mouth around Thief 2016. Imagine my surprise when it ended up being a pretty good game.
If there is 1 thing ı definiently remember from RAGE 1 then its the Dead City, its just a fun interesting place (also ı punched a big mutant to death if ı remember it right so it was really fun) also the rocket launcher boss fight. the other one was ofc the sparsely clothed woman with perfect skin and curves which my 10 year old self very much enjoyed and still do till this day.
I bought rage for the 360 quite some time after it was released and I never got wind of all the media fuss around it. Was a big fan of racing games and I was introduced to Doom by part 3 in my late teens, so I knew it only as a horror shooter with scary gun-or-light mechanic. It works wonders when you live without expectations on a game. The only bummer for me was the sudden ending of the story. When Rage 2 was announced I was pretty hyped at first, but I also was just getting into my first job and tabletop gaming, so I have not bought it yet. Now I have two kids and that has not help my time for video games... ^^
I also agree on the pacing. This happens quite often with FPS' for me: It takes like half the game or thereabouts to actually become "fun". Usually it seems to be a combination of lacking options and lacking environments (Quake 4 for instance). Rage without many of those weapon and gadget options is simply not a very interesting game (on repeat playthroughs at least) and some of the earlier missions aren't that engaging either. Almost abandoned it on my last playthrough, but eventually there are so many options to play around with, that that alone essentially carries the game. Never finished that last mission again though. The Authority and the "story" are really major weakpoints. Nice enough as an additional faction to fight, but that's about it. They simply don't fit in there and feel like a foreign body.
I never could get into Rage. I have loved all the id soft games since Wolf 3d when I was a little kid, but I just couldn't get hooked and engaged with Rage.
Playing it on the series x seems good , and the graphics look better on the x then the videos I see , not sure if it’s actually improved or not , but seems it
I don't think it's possible to enhance these textures because of the technology they used back then. From memory, it was one of ID Tech 5 very first game and they came up with something called "Megatexture" which basically means textures are huge and loaded upfront all at once and you never have to make any RAM calls except during loading. I remember reading an article where they hijacked the whole system, pushed it to ludicrous levels and the difference wasn't noticeable. The difference you're seeing probably comes from capture compression and youtube compression, which degrade the picture quality, sometimes to quite a high degree.
@@sueflewelling3657 Not sure if I'd review any souls games because I don't think I could say anything that hasn't already been said, but Darks Souls is my personal favourite game. I like the Arkham games but I personally prefer the first one.
Rage was revolutionary to the gaming community for its time. Fast paced fps with brutal gadgets, mechanics, and extreme gun fights. Anyone who disagrees, can't call themselves true gamers. Sorry 😂
I think it’s a cool game and I didn’t play it till 2020 lol. I don’t have crazy expectations. Although I didn’t finish it so I guess I didn’t like it that awful much but it was fun, rage 2 was way way improved and is an awesome game in my opinion, I bought all the stupid dlc (not the skins the extra game/weapon dlcs) just too let them know I think as much lol. Idk I try and vote with my wallet it makes sense to me. Also it’s not great and it’s not a great shooter, but for me being theee when it came out I love doom 3 to death, and still play it from time to time (reurrection Of evil usually it has a lot of added good stuff to make doom 3s base combat to make it more fun.

Why the hardest diffecult level? Just curious. As a newbie I'm starting off on normal until I get the feel of the game.

it just felt way too short
edit: 40:18 looking at some of these textures it looks like an "update" could benefit from parallax mapping

All the people who saying bad comment on Rage ... are the same who love to play always the same FPS with COD or others. Rage is a real cult game.

You clearly didn’t pay attention to anything in the video
Very decent game , i really enjoyed this when it was released.
A lot of people are losers that dont play games, all they do is listen to people online and in comments and go with shit. This game is a hidden gem
