It actually did change gaming drastically. It’s hard to see that now because so many games use its formula, but when you understand how simplistic action games were before this, and this formula was brand new. Far Cry 3 didn’t have many things that it did first, all the factors of the game had already been done before. But Far Cry 3 was the first to bring all those factors into the same game. Tons of developers just copied this formula and put it in a different setting with little to no evolution on it. Brother, Ubisoft did not write the character of Vaas, it’s well known that they originally had planned for a different main villain but were so impressed with Michael Mando’s audition that they decided to scrap their character design and create a new one based on his performance and likeness.
I finished Far Cry 3, but barely. I almost quit and just uninstalled it two or three times. There are so many things I didn't like about that it's hard to know where to start. - Vaas is first and foremost just a drama queen that endlessly rants at you in cutscenes without ever having anything interesting to say. The Jackal had some of that energy in his cutscenes as well, but it wasn't quite as over-the-top yet and he at least had an interesting angle on the whole situation. Story was not a strong point of FC2 either, but I felt that there were some interesting characters that actually expressed what their take on the situation was. Kouassi and Gakumba and their mercenary advisors come to mind first and foremeost. With FC3's characters I too often got the feeling that I had a weird clown in front of me that was just trying to hold my attention with whatever weird antics the writers had decided on that time. - The wildlife is important in FC3 when it was mostly part of the scenery in FC2. But the animals are short-sighted and otherwise psychotic. Not exactly good AI and I could not suspend disbelief about how they were behaving either. These are just basic animals, not weirdly mutated creatues in a strangely altered Zone like in Stalker. Having to murder dozens of them and rip off random bits to be able to upgrade anything didn't endear me to them either. - A lot of what FC2 did do very well was just worse here. Worse physics, worse fire, nature looked and felt like plastic, people ran around in red and blue shirts, the weather system and day-and-night-cycle were simplified and had little impact and stealth was just another gamified system. - AI perception, behaviour and chatter were all clearly worse. They don't perceive most sounds anymore, chatter has little variety and responsive behaviour was comparatively simple. - From what I remember there indeed was a little more verticality overall, but there was also "You are leaving the mission area" and weird little side missions that want the player to do things in a very specific way and just fail the mission if you don't play ball. FC3 has a very, very weird attitude towards player freedom. - More freedom for equipping and customizing guns, but restrictive in terms of ressource gathering. Free fast travel, but locks you into missions and often forces certain approaches. Even the alarm system pretty much forces you into playing stealthily on higher difficulties. FC2 was restrictive in its own way as well, but it was a system that was designed to be what it was. With FC3 a lot of design decisions seem to be more about not inconveniencing the player, but it's implemented in a pretty haphazard manner and it seems they only listened to feedback of players that didn't like FC2, but then just ran afoul of different pitfalls instead. - FC2's soundtrack was unique and it did fit the setting and - in my opinion - did enhance the atmosphere. FC3's on the other hand is perhaps the only soundtrack ever that I just had to turn off after some missions. - The gunplay was fine. Overall the guns sounded better whereas with FC2 there were some weak sounding ones. But simply being able to customize everything negates any meaningful choice and leaves everything at the player's fingertips. But with a unique twist where the player is forced to shoot lots of animals in an uninteresting, one-sided manner to obtain the needed crafting materials. FC2 was simple. It only cares about diamonds and nothing else. If you don't want to, you don't have bother with the suitcases either as the main missions always give multiple times the diamonds that any suitcase will ever contain. FC3 does have some things that seemed like improvements, but I never felt they took the FC2 that people loved and tried to improve on the things that didn't work. Instead they just made a game with a completely different design philosophy that just happens to have some of those "improvements" that some people had been clamoring for. It's not really a follow-up to FC2 and instead the first game of what one might call the Far Cry 3 series of games. Sorry for the overly long rant. It's just one of those topics.
FC3 has a weird bipolar tone. On the one one hand it covers themes of murder, human trafficking, male r*pe (hinted at), someone being burned alive in a box etc., then on the other it has exaggerated cartoon characters (and general design aesthetic) and Jason can take time out to indulge in arcady mini-games, like racing or 'Trials of the Rakyat'. The first game was a tongue in cheek, over the top '80s action movie parody, with an Island of Doctor Moreau inspired plot. The second instalment had a more serious tone, with its Heart of Darkness theme. FC3 doesn't know what it is. I preferred the characters in FC2. They all talk 19 to the dozen for some reason, but they're a lot more subtly written. Hector Voorhees is a great character, 'china'. The regular mercs had better chatter too - they have some quite funny dialogue, while the FC3 pirates have about 3 lines on repeat. FC3 has odd game play decisions as well. It's an open world sandbox, but the devs really liked their stealth mechanic, because the player is more or less forced into it. All the side missions want you to stab a pirate up close, and you get extra XP for taking outposts stealthily. Then there's the 'Heavies', who are impervious to everything apart from explosives and stealth kills (provided you have the perk). Bad luck if you didn't bring a rocket launcher along, because you'll be shooting them all day. FC2 gave the player a selection of tools and allowed them to complete missions any way they liked - guns blazing, stealth or blow everything up.

I remember playing this game when it was new. And it was incredible! I agree with almost every point you make in this video. Now I have to try it again to see if I have the same technical issues. I cant really remember on what Windows version I played.... must have been Windows7
Talking about Far Cry 3 crashing i upgraded from a GTX 750 2GB to a GTX1660 SUPER 6GB and expected to play games a bit better im also on Win 10, every 5-15 min FC3 wood crash on me i tried everything for a fix then i read somewhere i can't remember where to set your graphics options preset to MEDIUM settings (with Direct X9) and it worked played for over 2 hours with no crash i don't know if it will work for you but it's worth a try hope it helps, take care.
I never saw a game create such a noise from adolescents as this. I quit shortly after killing Vas and being sent after the other guy on the smaller island which all felt tacked on as if they knew they needed some more. I found the next game much better and finished everything in 4. I did go back to try and finish 3 but after 1/2 hour I uninstalled and that is that.
Personally, I'd put FC2 above 3. FC3 was an enjoyable game at the time it came out, but there were several things I didn't like about it even back then. The thing I remember most vividly is how many story missions in that game were super linear, as opposed to the do-what-you-want approach of free roam. Hence, the missions stuck out to me like a sore thumb. I am also not particularly fond of the stealth system they introduced with 3. Sure, marking enemies, having warnings in your HUD, disabling alarms etc. is convenient and gives more control over the situation to the player, but it ruins the immersion. In FC2, you had to use your eyes and ears to know if you've been spotted or not and the game wouldn't help you with that at all. But FC3 plays it too safe with all these elements. And it's clear to me that stealth is the way they want you to approach most situations. Just think of the XP bonus for clearing camps silently or giving you the ability to put a suppressor on most weapons, making weapon choice almost redundant, as opposed to FC2. I also think they oversimplified too many game mechanics. FC3 came out during that time when especially first-person shooters were dumbed down to appeal to the largest audience possible. Take healing, for example. When you ran out of syringes in FC2, you were shit out of luck, with the only thing standing between you and death were the iconic, dragged out and graphic healing animations. In FC3, you can heal at any time using bandages, it just takes longer to apply them compared to syringes, which is detrimental to resource management and removes a lot of tension from open combat. Overall, I think Far Cry 3 suffered from trend-chasing and overcorrecting things people didn't like about its predecessor. For example, I don't think it was a good idea that cleared camps stayed clear for the rest of the game because it removes a lot of random combat encounters and the game becomes increasingly boring the more camps you have cleared. The near-instant respawns in FC2 were annoying for sure, but flipping things completely upside down in FC3 was an overreaction to that IMHO. I could rant on but even though I do not agree with your ranking, I totally see where you're coming from and I want to congratulate you on this video. It's a really in-depth analysis of the game with many entertaining parts and good structure. Found your channel randomly when looking for some FC2 videos and you have earned yourself a sub, after all. Keep up the good work and I am looking forward to the other Far Cry reviews/rankings.
I bought this game a couple of years ago on sale for a fiver and still felt ripped off because of that POS Uplay launcher never remembering my account and constant server disconnect nagging. About the crashes, I experienced none when I played through proton compatibility layer.
Just finished the game on windows 11, and played it a while back too. The only crashes I had were on both playthroughs once I finished Mushrooms in the deep. Maybe I got lucky but the game ran totally fine aside from that
Run the game in Linux, it works pefectly without any crashes. I've found that nowadays, Linux has better compatibilty with older Windows games than modern Windows.
The game was originally supposed to be a bit different, instead Jason was supposed to have and save only two friends, Vince (who is not utilized in final game) and Nikki who became Liza in final game, Vaas was supposed to be just a regular pirate with Hoyt being the main antagonist They also planned for Willis to be involved since the start of the game and Jason was supposed to be much tougher, Dennis looked completely different and such, a lot of interesting changes that make you wonder how the game would be received if they didn't change all that Also you mentioned how in the "Join Citra" ending of the game they didn't even bother making a nude model for Jason, there are in fact references to such model existing in game files, but the actual model got removed, there are some text mentions but there's also some textures iirc The Coop mode featured it's own storyline where you get to play as 4 different characters with all it's events taking place before the main storyline, it was a buggy mess but really enjoyable when it worked
Thank you for this video. Very cool. I played FC3 about 3 years ago and loved it. Mostly I just loved the Island, nature, visual spectacle. I remember fondly just walking and exploring. I made a point to try and visit on foot every point of interest on both islands. On the other hand I was not that impressed with Vass and his antics. Probably because by 2020 it was not something revolutionary anymore. By that time I had seen many trailers of other FC evil guys like Pagan Min and I was ready. Had not had any technical issues, thanks good. Mentioning it just to say that if I had I would probably not finish the game and would hated it. Glad I got lucky that my hardware at the time fitted it. On a more serious note, I believe the golden standard for sex nowadays is 30 seconds so you should up your game. My mother complained.
There's so many games I'd want to play for the first time again, like this or Half Life 2, just to see what those games feel like with modern sensibilities but without the nostalgia. I played this game remembering how awesome it was at the time, but like you say, Vaas-like characters have been done several times since, so he's no longer a standout character.
Too bad this was the peak of the series. It was all downhill from every FC after 3. 4 wasn't too bad, but it was he first one showing signs of "modern gaming ubisoft". 5 went FULL BLOWN. The shooting/moment to moment gameplay wasn't too bad, though. Everything after 5, I dont even have to mention, we all know the disasters those were... FC2 was great as well, it had some really cool and unique aspects. Not sure if I prefer FC2 or FC3 more. I think the stronger nostalgia I have for 2 has me biased. A FC game taking the best/most unique aspects of FC 2/3, and the controls/menu+UI/weapon customization from FC4, made by the combined devs that made 2/3 and with moden day graphics, would be the most amazing game ever.
Better to be clear if you're talking about the game or the company. You shouldn't expect older games to run perfectly nowadays. Lack of support, updates or patches is not relevant to the game experience that was available earlier in the life of the game.
@@demonmonsterdave Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean, because it sounds to me like you're saying I cannot discuss issues with the current version of a game, the version that is being sold to people, because those issues were not in the game at launch. Does that mean people shouldn't talk about No Man's Sky unless its the 2016 release version? If a game is still being made available to purchase, it absolutely should be expected to run properly.
I felt like far cry primal had so much potential if they just actually put in some effort and developed a new and interesting melee system instead of literally having nearly the same combat as previous games just without guns
It's been a while since I played Primal, but I do seem to remember thinking the melee combat was lacking. But I found the bomb owls and wolf summoning helped to keep things interesting.
Primal gets so much shit but it is my favorite farcry also , with the new survival mode it completely changed the game with no mini map, stamina bar, crafting isn't instant anymore so now it takes a few seconds, can't carry as much, less resources in the world, the nights are darker and last longer and more predators come out, the owl can't drop bombs or dive attack so is just used for scouting, fast traveling is somewhat limited where now it uses meat and stamina, I'm sure there were even more differences but it's been awhile , I'm proud to say I got the survival of the fittest achievement for primal - survival mode on - permadeath on- expert difficulty - 100% completion
This is possibly one of the most generic games I’ve ever played and I will say it is more generic then Call of Duty, I can’t think of a single moment in Far Cry 3 that wasn’t a cliché. The gameplay loop got boring real fast you liberate safehouses, climb towers, loot a bit, complete a story mission, sell your crap, buy stuff, rinse and repeat. People love to rag on Far Cry 2 but at least that tried to do something different and the features in that game could of been expanded on and improved but they went down the ultra safe route and well…it is what is. Far Cry is a game you play until something decent comes out (until Ubisoft inevitably ruined the franchise)
By modern standards yes, this game is incredibly generic and "safe", as you put it. But this was the first game to successfully put all of these things together in one package, and was so successful that other companies, and Ubisoft themselves, just copied the formula so much until it became so generic. Most of the features of this game came about because they were trying to expand and improve on what they had done in Far Cry 2. They weren't "playing it safe" with FC3 because there was no "safe" format for open world shooters before this game came out, they were still experimenting and figuring out what works.
@@borangedunn I respectfully disagree, they did play it safe by making the game more mainstream by having the cliched and contrived gameplay/story moments seen in many games up until point and I don’t see how many of Fc3s features came around because they expanded and improved on Fc2. Maybe Fc3 was the first game to “successfully” do the things it does but doesn’t change that the game is a bit rubbish, when I first played it back then I thought it was alright then I just put it on the shelf and played something else, playing back recently made me realise why I stopped playing it. I remember when Ubisoft tried to do something different with their games and I doubt Far Cry 3 existed to be different It was there to pay the bills and it worked and I think this was the start of Ubisofts downfall into a typical triple a studio. (Tbh if we didn’t have Fc3 we wouldn’t have blood dragon so I suppose that’s a good thing)
If you mean they "played it safe" from a narrative perspective, then I think there might be a good argument to make there. The story was pretty basic and had been done before, and there were no real twists or turns to experience. And I would certainly agree that this marked a turn for Ubisoft moving forward. Many of their games after this borrowed or outright copied several elements from FC3, to the point where in FC5 they made fun of themselves for doing so. At several points in the video I make comparisons between features and mechanics from FC2 and 3, and when you look at reviews of Far Cry 2 from the time it seems fairly obvious to me that many of the features in Far Cry 3 come from improving on things they had implemented into FC2. Many people complained about the respawning enemy bases in 2, so 3 keeps them permanently cleared. People moaned about everyone in the world trying to kill you in 2, so 3 added non-hostile NPCs. I could go on but I already made an overly long video talking about that stuff. Like you say, none of these things were exactly new, but even if it wasn't the very first game to do all of these things at once, it was certainly the first time the majority of people saw them all together. Just to be clear, I'm not trying to convince you that you should like this game, or that you're wrong for not liking it. No one likes every game, and I'd have to be an even bigger arsehole than I already am to tell someone that their opinion is wrong. Except people who like Assassin's Creed Unity, obviously.
@@borangedunn I never had the impression that you were trying to convince me to like the game at all I’m just giving my opinion like any other stranger on the internet. I wish you nothing but the best!
Do you consider games like Spec Ops: The Line generic and kitsch because of the "cliche" game-play loop and external narrative; much akin to a GOW game? Because these two games delve into the same story beats about Jungian psychology and the duality of man a LOT, and I don't believe there are a plethora of FPS's that are similar to these two. If there are... please do tell.

Keep up the good work and I am looking forward to the other Far Cry reviews/rankings.
great video
Greatly appreciated comment
I bought this game a couple of years ago on sale for a fiver and still felt ripped off because of that POS Uplay launcher never remembering my account and constant server disconnect nagging. About the crashes, I experienced none when I played through proton compatibility layer.
Just finished the game on windows 11, and played it a while back too. The only crashes I had were on both playthroughs once I finished Mushrooms in the deep. Maybe I got lucky but the game ran totally fine aside from that
(Wrote this before hearing the rest sorry lol)
Burning weed fields to dubstep was peak gaming. How could anyone top that? 😅
The shotgun erection joke (?) was absolute gold, resulting in a good ole fashion belly laugh. Thank you.
First of all, yes, that was too soppy. Second, Celsius.
(Just a comment to boost the algorithm)
Run the game in Linux, it works pefectly without any crashes. I've found that nowadays, Linux has better compatibilty with older Windows games than modern Windows.
The game was originally supposed to be a bit different, instead Jason was supposed to have and save only two friends, Vince (who is not utilized in final game) and Nikki who became Liza in final game, Vaas was supposed to be just a regular pirate with Hoyt being the main antagonist
They also planned for Willis to be involved since the start of the game and Jason was supposed to be much tougher, Dennis looked completely different and such, a lot of interesting changes that make you wonder how the game would be received if they didn't change all that
Also you mentioned how in the "Join Citra" ending of the game they didn't even bother making a nude model for Jason, there are in fact references to such model existing in game files, but the actual model got removed, there are some text mentions but there's also some textures iirc
The Coop mode featured it's own storyline where you get to play as 4 different characters with all it's events taking place before the main storyline, it was a buggy mess but really enjoyable when it worked
It's a mistake not talking about the console entries and the multiplayer.

Very late, but even as a 12yo kid me and my friend were sad at how boring/underwhelming the multiplayer was for farcry 3.
Although it isnt the best game of all time its for sure my favorite
Far Cry 3 is amazing
Far Cry 3 is actually just a story Jason told to justify getting a tribal sleeve
Far cry 3 blood dragon is my favorite.
Agreed
@@borangedunn You're misunderstanding what I mean.
Make a far cry 4 vid and I'll backflip
Well I'm doing the Blood Dragon video first but the Far Cry 4 video should be out at some point this side of Christmas!

Lol
I disagree
In my opinión, Far Cry Primal is the best, because in almost all the others you become too easily a killing machine
That's a fair point. Most of these games definitely become a power fantasy by the late-game.
Far cry primal is one of my fav games to just put on hard and perma death and have a horrible time
Primal gets so much shit but it is my favorite farcry also , with the new survival mode it completely changed the game with no mini map, stamina bar, crafting isn't instant anymore so now it takes a few seconds, can't carry as much, less resources in the world, the nights are darker and last longer and more predators come out, the owl can't drop bombs or dive attack so is just used for scouting, fast traveling is somewhat limited where now it uses meat and stamina, I'm sure there were even more differences but it's been awhile , I'm proud to say I got the survival of the fittest achievement for primal - survival mode on - permadeath on- expert difficulty - 100% completion
Changed for the worst, people liked Vas, the gameplay of three is trash.
What did you say?!!
And it's Vaas not Vas you clueless.
11:00 "us army shirt". Wrong, that is a usmc shirt. Also, your title is really non-eye catching. Change the title, include Far Cry 3 in it. Something along the lines of "Far cry 3 retroperspective". You will get many more views that way. Hope this helps.
