Its a good argument for weeds, but i also like a small patch of clean lawn for looks and bare-footing. I grow many flowering plants around the lawn. For those who argue its depriving wildlife, so is your house, your deck and the streets and sidewalks. Plant flower gardens in andaround the grass and find balance
My yard was full of capeweed and barely any grass. I spent weeks just pulling out the capeweed. Once I got most of it, I hosed on a Weed and Feed which forces the weeds to grow uncontrollably until they die. It worked quite well. Each time a patch opened up, I got grass seed in there regardless of the season, and then I did a dethatch, plug, overseed and topdress in autumn. Now the lawn is looking 100x better. Still a little way to go, but now my neighbours comment on the lawn so I guess I've done something right!
Fantastic 👍🙏❤️
Im in a battle with daisies and dandelions on the lawn. I have been lifting the turf with a pitch fork to loosen the roots, using a trowel to lift them and just pulling them straight out by hand. It's nice to do later on these summer nights 👍
I definitely recommend a tool for this, specifically Fiskars Xact weed puller. No bending over, instant remover, and its sooo satisfying to use. I had a cheap weed puller before but upgraded to this after trying my friends' one. Had it for 2 weeks and its my favourite tool for garden work now. I have tried and tested it on dandelions, daisies, brambles, thistles, ragweed, etc. yet to find a weed it cant get out. Not the cheapest out there but it absolutely is worth it, I have a bad back, and this will save me so much time and effort its' phenomenal.
@@freshfed Awesome, sounds like a game changer for me. Thanks for sharing mate 👍
I also am working on a lawn that I have ignored for years...now more dandelion than grass, it seems. It may take a few years but I just can't give up. I use a dandelion fork and also a long thin wand that screws onto your hose and drills down with water. Makes a lot of mud but also easier to pull-up the footlong + taproots. I find it is always easier to pull taproots after a really good rain
Hi Robbie, I first did not mind the white clover in my lawn and throught as you do, it's good for the bees. Nature did not thank me for that, because meanwhile in some patches I have more clover than grass. Clover seems to be stronger than grass, so in the long run you don't do yourself a favour to tolerate this weed.
Your a good man Robbie and your scientific knowledge is way beyond mine regarding the ins and outs of lawn care.
Thanks for passing that knowledge on mate.
🙂🙏👍

This guy.....
What can I say... fantastic video and advice...!
Straight to the point....

Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Robbie, great video , and thanks for taking the time out for making the footage.
I have a large area of grass at the bottom of my garden that I recovered from a wilderness when we bought the piece of land off the local housing association. We had big plans for the area, but unfortunately I was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2017.
The grass in this area seems to grow at a much faster rate than the lawn nearer to the house. After a last cut in October I have to leave the area alone over the winter and come March the grass just seems to shoot up.
My question is do grasses grow at a different rate?
Is there any way I can stunt the growth of this fast growing piece of the garden?
Thanks
Excellent, im actually addicted to picking the clover out of my lawn...the stolons knitting their way through under the sword...spreads like crazy..thanks for the advice Robbie
👍👍👍
I like daisies and clover, just pulling them up where they are undesired or over growing and mowing back works, not a fan of dandelion in a lawn, it can be nice in the right meadow when they are all flowering, but the foliage and many stages of it's flowerring cycle look unsightly, little shirley poppies are nice, though they can take over and become weeds, just have to make sure they don't self-sow, guess it depends what you like, a weed is just a plant that is growing somewhere you don't want it- clover are good for your soil though, they fix nitrogen and when they die back, it goes into the soil, as do the bacteria in the nodules, this leaves an area where the grass will outcompete the clover, you can see the patches moving, coming and going. These flowers also attract many pollinators like bees and butterflies (they love daisies and their relatives), this benefits your garden and the insects add to the colour and atmosphere too.
Some great advice there, thank you 🙏🙏
Dandelion is the most persistent. Easy to dig them out with a fork; get root or it will grow back; if flowering don’t leave flower on ground as it will turn to seed even after lifting- best to get them as soon as they flower, or preferably before.
Hi mate, I am having a hard time finding any good info on creeping buttercup. Would you be able to suggest on how to remove or control this? Thank you
Hi Robbie, could you please make a video on how to control/kill ivy. Here in south east its growing into everything. Its a big problem. Great informative videos, keep up the great work.
Ok :)
I've got the dandelions out one by one, with a fiskars weed puller. Took all last summer, but it's worked a treat. Now, what can I do about bindweed?
Bind weed and it’s corkscrew roots are a bugger. Maybe if we just start thinking of them as mini morning glories 🥰 they are related after all 🤭
I like how you first bring up the benefits of the weeds before you tell us how to kill them. Giving them a fair trial lol
It was a really interesting video to research. I learnt a lot making it too i
🤣🤣🤣
With reference to the comments on biodiversity, I think a nice green lawn can still be had if you grow plenty of plants and flowers in your borders with wildlife in mind. Also if you have large enough garden, then maybe a patch of grass area that is left to grow long and let nature take its course can still be beneficial and attractive.
We have an acre field besides the lawn, plenty of biodiversity there
@@Premier_lawns_official Lucky man!
Table salt poured onto the crown of dandelions works a treat

Oh lordy I have a huge lawn with mostly weeds and a few blades of grass!! I spray stuff, sprinkle stuff, but they just come back with a vengeance! I started with bare earth but still the weeds come. I’m at my wits end!

Hi Robbie. My 90 year old mother loves her large lawned garden. This year she is consumed in digging up any lawn daisies that she finds. She tells me that they are spread by their seeds but I have never seed them with seed heads. I have always thought that they spread under the soil by their roots. I am not trying to stop her way of trying to get rid of them as its keeping her active but it is interesting to know how they propagate themselves. I cant find any way on the internet how to eradicate them other than digging up and we would never use weed killer. Please help.
Regards Theresa.

Clover is not a weed, it’s a legume. It’s beneficial as it’s nitrogen fixing and stays green even in droughts. I have a green lawn all summer without wasting my well water thanks to clover. I did a new lawn behind the house and made sure to buy a mix of a few types of grass plus clover. It’s perfect.
The weed killer industry convinced people clover was a weed as their products kills all broadleafs including clover. Prior to weed killers, healthy lawn included clover. My garden centre owner said that she’s seeing an increase in people wanting clover in their lawn.
That's a great argument, and I hoped the video helped show some of the benefits of having Clover
I have a 10.000 m2 lawn at my new place and I am planting clover.
I am transitioning to clover as we speak.
@@grattonland broadleaves vs broadleafs
Green grass is a weird concept to me... the amount of herbicide and fertilizer that you need to add is just 1- a waste of money
2- not good for the environnement (wildlife, insects (very important for our survival such as bees, butterflies, etc.)
Clover in your lawn actually add nitrogen into the sol via their roots so they help your lawn to stay greener without the need for fertilizer (also they are a good source of pollen for pollinators and they are edibles ! )
Hi David, I tried to show all of that on the video. Thanks for the feedback 🙂
@ dylan milner Exactly right! Manicured lawns should he a thing of the past...Nobody should be killing wild flowers such as daisies or dandelions for the sake of "neatness" and for their own misguided vanity!

I agree, I hate lawns, I refuse to mow mine, and neighbors cry about it.
One neighbor even sprays my lawn, and mows part of it.
Only reason I'm here trying to learn about this is because I need to rent this place out, means "fix" the yard, make it look pretty for the city folk.
How long do i need to cover the area with the black bag to block the sublight? Will it kill the grass too
Yes it will kill the grass. Any area that is covered will die. Some weeds might die in a few days others will take longer
New to your channel.....I think the best way to do this, is you coming to my house and doing it for me, hahaha. Thank you for showing me what to do. Ill be in the garden tomorrow to sort my lawn out. Thanks again..

Good question, honest answer. I'm not sure
Blocking out the light is going to kill the grass as well as the weeds though. At that point you might as well have just dug it up.
@@opticyclic Yes that's true. Perhaps it'd work well for a fair sized area, say a square metre or more. You could cover it over, leave it for a few weeks, then reseed; that'd be easier than digging it all up.

There isn't a one size fits all for stripes, i use an old antique lawn professional mower for my lawn and that lets me cut it a bit shorter than most lawns (You don't need this)

Chemical control is probably your best bet 👍
A green lawn may look nice but it's space robbed from nature, our gardens make up more space in the UK than all other green spaces put together, therefore we should be encouraging wild flowers to grow...no mow May etc. You people who are obsessed with having a bowling green lawns and sterile gardens, devoid of wildlife with living room type furniture are selfishly extending their indoor space (but it only really gets used for a handful of months due to weather) and this impacts habitat and food availablity for insects, birds, mammals etc that are now in such serious decline we are likely to witness the extinction of several species in the next decade. Leave the weeds! They are actually flowers
We shouldn't be killing these, they are a great food source for pollinators, and a glover awn looks great and is easy to mange only needing a couple of cuts a a. year, I have watched and enjoyed many of your gardening videos, but I hate videos like this. We all need to be providing food for bees and other pollinators, not focusing on manicured lawns
