  • Do you want a thicker lawn this year? In today's video, this is the complete guide on how get a thicker lawn with all the steps you will need
    All are broken down into bite-sized pieces with easy to follow, step by step instructions. From how to cut your lawn before a lawn renovation and if you should you scalp your lawn and how long to leave it after the work is completed
    I will be covering the benefits of aeration and why I scarify afterwards, with a little bit of science mixed in for some fun
    If you just threw seeds down, they wouldn't grow, however, if you follow the tips in the advice on how to create the right conditions and how to cover them properly so that they grow. Did you know the difference between compost and soil when levelling your lawn? Well, if you are a beginner, this should be helpful as a lot of new people get this mixed up when trying to level their lawns.
    But just covering the seeds and hoping for the best isn't the best plan, so as this is a beginner's video, I will teach you how to water your new grass seed as this is very important if you want it to grow.
    If you have a question about the information shown in a video, please post it in the comments section on UA-cam, and we will do our best to respond as soon as possible.

    I get it, that the top dressing soil and compost mixed with seeds needs to be sweeped to fit the ground.
    But what about leveling a ground after a winter (or next to new house like in my case) with soil or/and sand as you show on other videos? Shall be done after aerating and scaryfing and before seeding? Maybe I should give it a week rest after I aerate and fix the bumps - before seeding and fertelizing?

    For my lawn this is how I set it up for easy maintenance when moving and starting with sod:
    season 1: let the lawn grow and cut it at the height you want. Notice where water pools, where it drains, and where doesn’t get enough water. Be mindful of low spots and high spots. Correct these areas this season by moving sprinklers, installing a French drain, and removing all debris that is in the lawn such as rocks or thatch. This is now your foundation.
    Season 2: let lawn grow at start of season for 2-3 weeks so it is off to a good start. Then proceed to level the lawn with sand or topsoil in areas that were being missed or scalped by the mower last season. Also aeration of the lawn at this stage is also very good. Now you let the lawn grow as a great foundation is set and it’ll grow into an even yard.
    Season 3 and onward: every start of the season de-thatch, aerate, and little amounts of sand in any low spots that formed. And that’s it, cut at desired height, water based on weekly weather, and remove debris before it piles up or embeds itself into the lawn.

    We dug a layer of mud and rocks from the lawn. Put down new top soil and pre turf fertiliser and layed new turf. We gave it 3 weeks. Grew nice and green and got quite long. Some reason my mrs went ahead and cut it herself. Looked fine for a day or 2 but then we ended up with alot of brown patchy areas and just grassless mud patches. What should i do to help it recover?

    Loved your videos and channel for a while now. They have really helped me learn the way of the lawn. I live in the east of England and woke the lawn up 3-4 weeks ago with a cut, scarify and feed, but didnt seed as it was still too cold. I suspect going into mid/late April, now is the time for over seeding etc as above. My question is, can/should I light scarify again? My lawn look well but a bit thin, but i feel a scarify would help with remaining 'dead' moss and cut some channels for seed. Or is this going to over stress the lawn?

    to scalp the lawn or not to scalp the lawn, depends upon how many of laborers are there going to be. the shorter the less labor intensive but not as great of immediate results.
    i was watching another golf course showing their aeration process for clay is first to use a dense blade scarifirer with a cross cut at 15º parallel, then a mole plow make your dewatering channels about 10-12" down, then follow with a 10-11" deep tine aeration, then use a 5" core plug aerator, then to topdress & backfill the plugs with tumble washed pga 90% sand 10% peat and soil. next fertilizer application should be heavy on the calcium and all of this should be done 2 weeks after the frost is out and temps hit 50ºF then you can get your pre-emergent done most effectively on the next application in early-mid april. or 3 weeks after you do this

My fences came down in the January storms and the company I got in to replace them have compacted a lot of the grass, which was to be expected given the nature of work and how wet the grass was. • @Premier_lawns_official
      @Premier_lawns_official  3 місяці тому +1

      Some things to consider about pre applying the fertiliser before hand...
      How do you create the seedbed without destroying the fertiliser by applying the fertiliser a couple of weeks beforehand?
      The grass on the lawn is then growing like mad as it's just been fed, this makes it harder for the new seed to get established
      Plus your seed has enough nutrients in it to pop out of its corn on its own

  • @ahastar1141
    @ahastar1141 3 місяці тому +10

    One question if you are truly talking about beginners, wouldn't learning proper mowing habits, watering, and weeding with maybe a bit on fertilization be the first steps toward getting a thick lawn? An overseeding project can be daunting for a beginner and without knowing proper mowing habits, understanding watering, and managing weeds it might be hard to maintain the early success that can come with an overseeding project. I'd also note for true beginners especially on a lot the size of what you have here, manual aeration with a pitch fork or a manual aerator from amazon is much less daunting and an excellent option.

    The only thing I disagree with is the watering recommendation. If I watered once a day it would be dry within hours. Most recommend light watering 3-4 times a day to keep it wet but noat soaking. I would check the peat moss every couple hours and 3 times a day was basically what it needed to not dry out.
