A friend of mine had one and I remember wanting one back then. This was of course years before discovering hobby grade RC cars. At the time, I had a Nikko Scorpion (1993) and thought it was great fun. I still don't know what happened to it after a certain life event and I am fairly certain my father had thrown it away or sold it before a move.
Im 43, and loved the Bandit especially when it shows up on the commercials back in the days. I asked my mom to get me one but instead I got the Hi-Jacker. Hahaha still loved it.
This was my favorite toy as a kid. It was actually fast. But they break easy. But you just can't beat the commercials Tyco would play to amp you up to get one of these.
I have one of the smaller red Outlaws that has the booster battery pack that looks like a motor on the back, I've had it since brand new back in the 90s and can't remember the last time it worked. About 6 month's ago I replaced the electronics and steering servo to hobby grade
Had the same RC as a kid one of the best ones I ever had. In my teens I ended up with the lunch box. I broke it pull the rear end out stuck it in the tyco. Worked great was fast old wheelies all day long. About an hour later something burned out. Try putting the old rear end back in still didn't work. Great video man.
Impecable work!!! You just brought me back so many childhood memories! Thank you for that! And what you have done is just amazing! My project would be doing Tyco's 6x6 Scorcher! Hahahahaha congrats for your video!

What a seemingly impossible, cool build, on a car that I've never heard of until a week ago!! Me and my friend completely missed the everything but Tamiya and RC10, spectrum of R/C vehicles. Apparently, there were some pretty decent ones. Some people cherish them, like I would a vintage Avante or King Cab. Things I didn't know! You, Stephan, are so good at thinking outside of the box!! 👍👍🍺🍺 Murph
Awesome seeing vintage with a new life. Although man you didn't just ls swap it you built that thing right. I mean better shocks. And the damn mobo cover still fit! Hell if not for those colored connectors you would never know its packing heat just from pulling the body
Great video. Love seeing mods on these old Tyco/Taiyos. They were such great cars, even if brought out today they'd kick ass. Edit: Damn. Nice truck!!!
If you're affiliated with AsiaTees you may want to add that the motor you used for this build have changed over the last five years. The motor you have linked now has a 2.25mm shaft and can not accommodate the stock pinion gear. However, AsiaTees' website lists the output shaft as being 2mm still. I've notified them of this change, as other vendors carrying the same part number are advertising the correct output shaft size.
I loved the Bandit. The most I modded it was fixing the rear upper body shock mounts to a steel rod (old axle of another tyco car). With all the technology of today I'd have alot of fun modding a Bandit. Just now though they seem worth a lot of money.
Seems to be about 1:16th scale actually. www.ebay.com/itm/Traxxas-Summit-1-16-Vxl-Custom-Tyco-Bandit-9-6v-Vintage-Custom-/332012270002?hash=item4d4d7931b2:g:hnsAAOSwx2dYDXM5 1:18th scale rwd stadium truck like the losi mini-t if you come across one or thundertiger's ZT2 then for the job & just adapt the wheels & tires from the original along with extending the chassis could also work probably (there are hex wideners that fits on it so should be possible to get the right width with some work.) Could also do like this dude that made a 1:10th scale replica (sort of) www.rcuniverse.com/forum/toy-grade-rc-products-498/11222289-custom-tyco-bandit-1-10-scale-clone.html missing the text on the decals though heh.
Bandits were the shit back in the day, I drove the hell out of mine. They were really quick for that time. I remember people getting pissy with me because my bandit could beat up on their much more expensive (and higher quality) tamayia RC cars. I still have a bandit fast-trax which are cool but I never enjoyed it as much as the wheeled bandit. I had the bandit with orange trim, a bandit with multi-colored fluorescent trim, and the fluorescent orange fast-trax. They were a ton of fun.
@@TheLEDwheel they were the monster beetle and midnight pumpkin with stock motors obviously that my friends had. They were quite a bit heavier but still. They don't hold a candle to some of the others like the grasshopper or hornet but the bandit motors are also substantially smaller.
you know oddly enough i had a lot of tycos as a kid but i dont remember the bandits at all. I had the hoppers. I must have fallen out of love with rc for a while or something.
The cheap open diff makes for one wheel peel. When I was trying to take slop out of the rear end of my Maisto project I stuck an ink pen spring inside the differential to press on the spider gears like in a real car. Now it works like a limited slip diff... two wheel burnouts.
OH GOD! have been following your channel for a while and the videos are praise worthy! Absolutely amazing. keep em coming tbh you deserve waay more subs man :D
The old 7.2v electronics can handle 2S and the 9.6v stuff can handle 3S since they're based off 6 and 8 alkaline cells at 1.5v a piece. I use lipos with adapters in my toy grade stuff and there's a noticeable punch without having to go full brushless. I do keep run times down since heat builds up quicker.
I was more worried about the gears in the transmission or rear diff. If I can find it I’m gonna drop in a new esc and servo. It’s a Golden Arrow from radio shack. I hope it’s still in her shed... gonna go look this weekend.
I've put oil shocks on my Eliminator, your method was much simpler that mine for the front mounting. You actually solved my problem on doing the conversion on my Hi-jacker because of the sleeker body. For the rear did you just glue in the ball joints in for the shocks? I thought about doing that on a Maisto I'm working on.
I notice at toys r us they brought back some of the toys from the 90s. I'm an adult now damn it and if they bring back Taiyo tyco cars like the scorcher, fast traxx, bandits and eliminators I'm fine with maxing out my credit card.
True the value would plummet and just like back in the day not to many kids cared about rc so they probably wouldn't sell enough to justify reproducing them again. Plus inflation would make it more logical to then spend a tiny bit extra and get a traxxas rtr. I was one of the few kids who almost never put down his rc but my parents would never spend the big money for a tyco. Only chance to get the ones I really wanted is to spend the big money and get one off of eBay.

This was quite a few years ago so pricing will definitely be different. But if you stick to entry level items like FlySky and hobbywing you should be able to get away with it for under $100 USD including batteries. Yes any Hobby grade radio system is 100% proportional.
On facebook there is someone selling them. Its a Tyco, Nikko and so on group. As for the chrome, in my videos i have a way to get pretty close to a chrome finish.
How in the world are the stock gears surviving a brushless setup? We used to strip the teeth off of the gears in these things constantly when they were bone stock. Lol. Eventually high gear would be completely shot and only low gear would work
Would you be able to give me a parts list for this build? I’ve never built a hobby grade car, but have a chassis from an old Tyco I’d love to do this too.

I'm officially inspired to add another thing to my list of stuff that I have absolutely no time to do.
I always wanted this as a kid! Still one of the coolest looking store bought RCs!
That was my first RC car! Awesome upgrade
Did not expect to find a vid of my childhood RC car. Nice job!
I'd love to do this to a new RC for my son. This looks like you just took my childhood truck and added about 30 more years of fun to it!
Had one of these after I had the Tyco Turbo Hopper.

Gotta do this to my Eliminator! Love these kind of projects
Very cool build. I've got a similar plan for an old 27MHz buggy I've had for 20 years. It definitely needs a power upgrade and proper steering.
I'm starting to do this to a red '86 turbo hopper. Thanks for putting this vid together, your work is making mine that much easier.
