If you have any suggestions for upgrades, or parts to make this better.. please use this comment to share them. I can then come back here for advice for part 2 :)
ta muchly
Do a build with this with an 8s conversion ;)
if you do it like Electric classic cars, design it as a bolt in replacement for the engine, then you can restore the car afterwards.
Does that Dumbo Rc radio have fail-safe for the nitro engines? Make sure to set it at full brake. People seem t forget about it and have 1/4 scale missiles flying out of control chasing children and dogs. 😂
80cc Taylor engine.
Get an R64 body for it
It's a neat old car. As you said getting running was a big positive. Replacing the servos will be a lot of work. Considering their age it's not surprising they would fail. I am looking forward to future adventures with this vintage car.
Yes, gonna need a good going over ready for next time 👌
Will be a lot of work? I could replace the servos in an hour lol
Servos should be easy to find and replace.
FINALLY !!! This is the car i saw when i was younger in a park, but could never find anything on it…….I would say this is the car that got me into RC’s ( truthfully my dad gave Tandy RC’s when i was kid like the porsche 962 “pulp fiction” car) but this one opened a new world for me….Thank you Phil you made a grown-ass man cry in a good way Thank you
This was a pretty sweet video, that car is definitely a pretty interesting design very cool mechanically. The body style makes me think of the pikes peak race cars of the 80s. I can't wait to see more of this when it gets warmer. Great episode brother, much love and respect from New York!
Yes, maybe I need to add a few spoilers and tidy the body up for the next video 👌
@@TomleyRC that sounds awesome, definitely looking forward to seeing what you have planned for it! PS great work on the rc advent calendar it was definitely a first and seemed like it was a hit. I know I didn't miss a video of it absolutely loved it man, keep up the great ideas your killing it.
@@davidskala7652I actually think it looks like the Toyota 22-d
“Welcome to the garage” are some of my favorite videos going back to WPL that you’ve done my friend!
😎🤘
That's a really cool big little blast from the past you have there! Loved seeing the electronics get upgraded!
It’s gonna be even better with new servos 👌
That’s bloody awesome! The body looks reminiscent of a Metro 6R4.
I agree 👌
6R4❤
I love watching these old gas videos it reminds why I don’t run them, you can’t beat the sound tho
Yeah.. loud, but cool to get going
Oh man that's so cool ! Watching you tinker makes me want to get my old HPI Baja out and have it running again.
Taylor Racing engine, upgraded servos other than that Idk if I would change much else.
I’d like to keep the stock engine for now.. but certainly new servos 👌
@@TomleyRC I'm just poking at you. I wouldn't change the motor unless it fails. It's super cool original equipment. At e try to track down a cooler looking body shell 🤷🏼 the Porsche body would be epic
Hey Phil, this wasnt a fail. You got an almost 40 year old rc car to run. Thats a win in my book and the this old car Is very cool. Cant wait to see what you do with it. Dont sell yourself short man. Not a fail. Great video. I always look forward to your videos because you do a great job, even if you dont like Traxxas.😁
Change the plug 😂😂
As soon as I seen the silicone hose on the exhaust I knew it was going to be destroyed in this video 😅
Probably didn’t help that I used a screwdriver to remove it
Thats the car/project I am looking forward the most on your channel Phil. Please bring it back to full glory
Yes, 100% 👌
That's quite the piece of engineering going on there. I've done petrol rc's years ago but they're always a pain to get running, every time I'd run one they always needed tinkering which spoilt the fun for me. I look forward to seeing how you get on with it all the same.
Yes, hopefully this old school one is a little simpler to tune and run
Definitely put a Taylor RC motor and components on it make it super badass!!
I like the idea of keeping it stock ‘ish’
I just revived 2 nitro buggies one 1/8 and a 1/16 2 speed both 12yrs old and now there clean a few parts replaced and workn like a charm that car is a beast for its age
It’s a nice feeling getting them up and running again 🤘
Looks an absolute beast!! Love it and already looking forward to the next video 😊
Me too!
That's gonna be bad ass once you get it straight. That tuned pipe sounds awesome. For the throttle I'd go with a a bell crank to a rod to the carb.
Good idea 👌
This brings me back i had one when i was 10 years old i still have it and it runs im now making parts for these at no charge to anyone who wants parts they dont make cars like this anymore its a shame 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Yeah, proper old school vibes
I don't know much about them as a brand but I DO remember 1/4 scale R/C gas vehicles were $2500 to $3500 CDN in the late 80's early 90's.
Yes, first thing I would have done is replace all the electronics and make sure you have no issues with the ignition system on the engine. Not sure if it has points or hall effect sensor for the firing.
Yeah, looking forward to giving it a good going over
@@TomleyRC YOu know as well as I do if it's points, a little 400 gr sandpaper will make the world of difference.
You did great tho getting it going even for a short run like you did.
So good to see you put oil in the cylinder before running. No one is doing it and its so important if it has been sitting for years :) Thanks for sharing.
I was a car mechanic for a bit after leaving school… so have rebuilt the odd engine here n there. Certainly important for an engine that’s not been run in a long time
I remember seeing this for sale. I would definitely put a new plug in there and change the ht lead make sure the spark is a strong as it should be.
Yeah, getting a parts list ready 👌
Really cool. Can't wait to see you run it.
Me too!
That's far from a fail, you know what to do now.
Also you could make a muffler for the exhaust, just a can with a hole for the exhaust to go in to, lots of holes for the out and steel wool inside. It's basic but it should do something. 😀👍
Yeah, not a fail… looking forward to getting it ripping 👌
I remember the garage with Wpl reviews the good old days you have moved on a long way now mate 👍👍
Yes, those were the days 👌
What a monster. Can't wait to see the progress on it!! Happy New Year 😊
Happy New Year Rob
Awesome, can't wait to see it running properly....
Me too!
been looking forward to seeing this run
Me too!
Macgyver at work. Starting 2024 BIG
As promised 😎🤘
Very Nice throw back there Phil!! Brought back some amazing memories of these 1/4 scale rigs rippin around the old rally track!! We ran them back in 90-94 roughly! Ours were FG but still awesome fun!!! Great find and the price !!! 😱WOW!!!!
Nice! I love my FG… but this thing dwarfs it lol
That’s an amazing machine and I can’t wait to see it get fixed!
Me too!
Now that was a great video. Cant wait to see this project build up. 👌🔥
😎🤘
That was definitely a success. 30 year old 2 stroke RC, and you got it going. Can't wait to see it ripping around. Man, is it loud though. Any noise complaints, hahaha. Cheers Phil have an awesome day.
Yeah, I’m really looking forward to getting it ripping 👌
I Would Like To See This BEAST Up And Running Again With It's Bodyshell On. 😃👍.
The plan for this video was to at least rip it around for a bit with the body on… just didn’t quiet go to plan. Part 2 for sure 👌
@@TomleyRC looking forward
Awesome, Nitro and Phil together on the channel, cooool it's alive. Ha ha ha.
🤘
Can't wait to see this full refurbished!
Me too!
From the past with soul 🔥🤩
🤘
Exhaust coming of and almost no difference in “sound” 😂 that thing is awesome! Looking out for the next video on this one :)
Haha.. yeah, a little deeper note.. but no difference in volume
Definitely not a fail! That thing is beautiful!
Yes, after all the work.. it was certainly a success
I really like the body. It's so 80's. Don't change it. It's too cool. Keep at it. Can't wait to see it finished.
Yeah.. maybe just sone better lights, and maybe a few 3D printed pieces
I would definitely call that a success. Can't wait to see it in action. Great vid!
Great effort Phil. Gas and Nitro are always projects. Even more so on cold, wet days. Looking forward to seeing more of it.
Yeah, they are sometimes a bit testing for your patience haha, it good fun to get running!
Thats awesome. Cant wait to see how it turns out!
Me too!
Really nice and unique old school quarter scale! I had a SVM model around the year 2001 that was chain driven, the car was massively huge... Miss those Rc days, thanks for taking me down memory lane ☝️
Shame is didnt come with a full set of hoosier tyres
Should try and find some for it!
Ether way cool car!
New to your channel by the way and absolutely loving your content
Relatively new to the hobby and have found your channel a great source of information and entertainment
Keep up the great work mate!
Viewing from Australia 🦘
Thanks dude. And yeah.. would be good to find some replacement tyres. Wheels are cool… so would be nice to keep them on it
Really looking forward to Part 2 of this, personally I think restoring/upgrading old RC engineering is great… 🏎️ 💨
Yes i remember the garage : good looking car yes new lights servo and and more a lot of work nice one phil
Yes.. a little bit of work to do
That was cool sometimes the vintage stuff can be fun as well.👍
Yes, good to get the old things running again
Theres just something special having a working engine inside these small cars. I love nitro and gas powered RC´s, just on a class of its own!
Yeah, does ad some character to them for sure
The annoying slow always a headache class........any cheap 550 can brushed 2s rc car will destroy a nitro........but the trill of the build and love of the hobby keeps them alive
Ooooo new video. Lunch was just made better!
Read this while eating my lunch 😇
Welcome to the garage! Ahhh it must feel good Mr Tomley. Nice time capsule you got there from back when new ideas came to RC constantly, back when RC was trying to find its feet. Very cool car, very cool call out. Makes me realise just how long I have been watching your channel. Happy New Year my friend.
It's BAD ASS! You can do it! Looking forward to you working your mojo on this machine!
❤ spring load the throttle and brakes so if you have an electrical failure it will mechanically shut off and stop . Good luck Phil 🤞 ,bob 😊
I’ve been here since the garage days, annoying you for years now 😂
Haha
That is so cool! The #1 RC channel never disappoints!
That’s not what my Wife says haha
I like how you get things running using bits you have. Also love seeing vintage stuff because as you say its more mechanical
Enjoyed watching this. I will look forward to part 2
This is badass! Looking forward to the next videos on it
Can't wait for the next episode of this project. It needs a porsche body on it, that would be awesome.
Be awesome to find a Porsche body 👌
you and Kev should do some collabs man you all have the coolest RCs dude
Loved this video, I ain’t much for vintage cars but the sheer size and it being petrol perked my interest ❤
awesome to see this rip around again!
I do love a bit of vintage stuff, top video. Your best this year😂.
Brilliant that is Phil!! I can't wait to see that car on song, I think it's gonna be really quick! 👍🏻
Honestly, its one of the coolest rcs ive ever seen. Cant wait to see how it rips
This is so sick bruv I want more of this beast roll on spring/summer time 💪🏻🫡
That is cool i like that, the wheels make it really stand out
Really enjoyed this video. Looking forward to part 2. Hopefully soon 👌🏽
Me too! Planning for March/April when the weather drys up a bit
Sorry for the multiple comments. I would run a hotter spark plug. Especially in the cold conditions. Also, make sure the spark plug gap is correct with a feeler gauge. I'm guessing 0.030" is common for these engines, or it will be hard to cold start every time.
Yeah, i looked for a new plug when I went to get 2 stoke oil, but they didn’t have any in stock. So I’ll order one for next time 👌
Could this engine be converted to EFI?
Id run it on 3 servos.
1 for throttle
1 of breaks
1 for steering.
Sounds more complicated but its actually not. It gets rid of alot of linkages and deletes the throttle cable.
Yeah, good idea. I think my FG has 3 servos
Looks fantastic! Great problem solving skills😁
It was good fun 👌
A blast from the past. I did not know there was anything like this on the market in the 80s and 90s.
That’s a very interesting model Phil , it looks great and when you have sorted the servo’s I’m sure you’ll have great fun running it , I look forward to the day you do run it properly.
I’m looking forward to it 👌
What a great piece of RC history! Really looking forward to the Part 2!!! I'd love to see you completely restore this old girl!
I just recently got back into the hobby, and all I remember from way back when I was a kid my neighbor did RC stuff, so I would tag along with him and his kid to local club get-togethers. There were a bunch of adults tinkering around with petrol stuff like this, since elec-tech was nowhere near what we have now and ICE cars weren't nearly so compact. I wanna say there were at least 3-4 guys that had 1/4-scale stuff like this and raced on weekends in parking lots alongside the folks running NiCd buggies, but they had a circuit set up that was HUGE by comparison.
I live in Florida, so we also went down to Daytona's oval and ran some of them on the big banked turns, same as NASCAR and then dropping down to the infield for some "road course" layout. I really want to see that again someday, except with my own car barreling through the turn!
So cool! Old school cool!
Good luck, hope to see it running well in the future
Me too! Gonna make a parts list
2:36 I think nothing is missing there, floating brake discs is a common technology
Yeah, they seemed to function okay actually after a little tweaking
What an epic car! never seen one before, very cool (:
Yes, so cool 👌
Man that thing is huge. Can't wait to see more running videos of this rc once u get everything fixed on it. Awesome video buddy keep up the good work 💯👍
Cheers dude. Me too!
what a beast of an RC! i remember seeing ads for some of these big RCs in magazines growing up but never saw one in person (or in video even). Excited to see the rebuild! New electronics all round is going to go a long way i think haha
Yes… can’t wait to sort it properly
This is cool stuff right here! More vintage stuff please.
Hi Phil. Really like the design of the car. And it sounds great. Looking forward to seeing it rip about. 😊
Man that was definitely a win you know it runs and it moves. Love the video man can't wait for part 2
Yes… good base to start with 👌
That thing is freeking sweet. And yeah, I'd say the fact that it started at all was a win for the first try. Can't wait to see this thing really running.
Good on ya mate awesome getting it working
I'm the only one that thought you looked like raulph from Christmas story.. you shoot your eye our kid.. when you was holding the exhaust 😂
That’s awesome great job , can’t wait to see the end results 👍🏻💯👌
Got me an FTX Tracer from back in the garage days 😂 not really a fan of the body shape, defo 80’s vibe BUT if you were to spray it white and add some new decals it could almost be an old Metro 6R4 rally car? 🤩
Yes, would be good to get it looking more like a 6R4
A real car. Love this thing. looking forward to more of this.
Awesome find mate. I can’t believe that was from the 80’s. Same fundamentals have been passed over the yrs. Great job for your 1st try. You succeed in finding what it needs a plus you ran it. 👏 👏 looking forward to the next running video.
What a rig! Epic restoration. ❤
Love all your efforts 😊🎉❤
Thank you 🙏
Awesome vid!!! I love classic vintage and rare rc cars! I m restoring 2 chaindrive 1/10 samurai now myself😊
That's a truly exciting video
That’s freaking amazing !!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful machine !!!!!!
🤘
Considering this is from the 80's it is very well designed.
I have seen quarter scale ''pan'' cars before but never one like this. Very interesting!
Must have costed a good penny!
Thanks for sharing.
Awesome!!! More of that!!! 😁😁
More coming 🤘
Definitely NOT a fail! Looking forward to this series 👌👍
Great to see that you finally got around to this one :) I have two DWA 2wd ones and a kit to make one of them 4wd. One is the same rally version (apart from the 4wd) that you have and one is an onroad version with an even worse suspension setup. Be aware that the shock towers on these break super easily and are hard to find replacements for.
Nice to know there are more about. I’m hoping this will be quite stable once running properly, so not chance of a crash. Might even be worth getting someone to 3D Scan the shocks to make some better ones
@@TomleyRC I was thinking about remaking the shock towers in aluminium, but haven't gotten that far yet. Should be a good boost in weight to strength ratio tho. On the other hand, weight wise these are made like Sherman tanks 😆
@@bosse4905I have my own 3d printer at my shop and a Hass VR 11 and I've been making a bunch of vintage parts for my cars
The rims and tires are sick looking. It seems like the larger you go up in scale the better the tires and rims get. Awesome car. Definitely worth a bunch.
