The eraser suspension is a grand tribute to the " I am gonna drive this this thing no matter what " attitude all my friends had growing up with early RC cars. I would of loved to have a digital camera back then and document all the crazy shit we came up with to keep our cars rolling! Can't wait to see what route you go with on the resto.
Learned a couple things here Mate! To pay you back, these cars can be completely disassembled & cleaned without cutting/desoldering wires: The power switch can be finagled through the slot, for one. The Molex can be removed easy & Tyco included the tool, sorta! Take an extra Tyco transmitter antenna & cut the tube that measures .140 inch outside dia. off to one end: Then sliding that cut antenna tube over the inner brass ends of the Molex connectors will collapse the little brass 'Arms' that keep it from pulling out. Just push up a bit on the wire whilst pushing the snug tube over it, then when the 'arms' collapse you can just pop it out easy- Mark the polarity first. Great to see this kind of thing, keep it up! Thanks for the info Chris! I actually read that in a really old RC car action from the 1980's haha! This little guy is going all modern but when I do a stock restoration, I NEVER cut anything. I do not like hacking up a car at all!
I just got a Dickie Colt 4x4 from Ebay and upgraded it to Hobby grade RC. It was a lot of fun as my brother had the Dickie Off-Roader 4x4 (which is 95% the same) back in the days...I was so astonished, that the Mabuchi 280 motor has such a nice top speed at 2s Li-Ion ! In the USA it was called Radio Shack 4x4 Off-Roader. If you don´t have one => get one ! These are bulletproof vehicles and the perfect toy for kids and RC noobs.
@@AMPROEngineering I killed the motor today after running 30+ minutes off-road on 2s LiIon...Do you know which motor is the right one to buy ? I have the same size motor here but it has very low rpm...I guess the original motor must have much higher kv but I don´t know how much exactly.
@@19Marc79 I have the 2430 combo myself. Just bought a puller to swap out the factory pinion on one of my Tycos. Then I have to figure out how to get it on the brushless motor.
Well, the body with the stickers isn't from then, haha! I think I added them in the late 1990's and I always hated how it looked. The other one with all the different colors is staying as is!
100% agree with your sentiment of no need to put a brushless in and just beat the thing into the grave. These arent the cars for that, at this point its all about the nostalgia and the collecting. Get it running, then preserve it....but hey to each their own i guess.
I had one of these as well as the turbo hopper. My bandit snapped at one of the front shock tower after jumping it off the driveway ramp. Wish i still had one...
The red turbo hopper that used 8aa's was my first real rc. I loved it. I put a radio shack truck body on it. I think it was a ford. Then a lunchbox around 1990.
Like I told Stephan (the LED Wheel), SO many interesting and cool vehicles me and Carmine missed out on....... We were of the "nothing but Tamiya and RC10" group back then. Then I got out of R/C (except Boats) by 1994, and Carmine got out about 1998..... We missed a LOT apparently! 😲😲😲 I swear I've NEVER heard of this, the "Turbo Hopper" or any of the other seemingly obscure vehicles that you and Stephan seem to dig into, and cherish! He's quite a madman with mods as well - but up till recently, his has been mostly machining aluminum parts.... He recently bought a 3D Printer, and has been exploring 'your World'. It's going to be awesome to see you restore this! My suggestion - I think you should do a similar oil shock and mounting solution, like Stephan did. I already know that you're more of a purist..... but you DID mention things like double wishbone suspension and a couple of other things! 😀😂 This will be interesting! I can't wait to tell Carmine. He probably didn't even know that Tyco made R/Cs. 😲😲 I remember he absolutely HATED their Trains! Thank you, for showing us a whole different World! Murph
I think in order to be into the turbo hopper and the like, you needed to be between 5-10 I would say. Anyone with cars like yours would have no interest in that time for something like that but in terms of target audience, man Tyco knew who to aim at!
Yeah, in that time frame, Carm was in his late 20's, I was nearly 30.... Our 5-10 period was about full-sized GI Joe, Hot Wheels, Stretch Armstrong, and playing games that are probably banned in 12 Countries these days!! 😂😆 I do remember the commercials though. Drove my little brother crazy! We probably had 1 or 6 of these curious little cars in the house. Marketing was definitely TYCO's strong suit. I am anxious to see what you do with this!
Me too...I hope it goes well. Sometimes I bite off more than I can chew and then I am stuck trudging through it all until it is done...like the High Lift project...
I have a QD Thundershot and a QD Avante, they both have the same or very similar rear axel to your Bandit, even has the speed toggle switch in the same place.
I have a 9.6 hi jacker and I'm stripping the car down including the gearbox....decrease and re grease it.. possibly I'll keep the stock motor but we will see. I want to redo the suspension with proper oil shocks to. gonna be a nice little Xmas time project for myself...I may re paint the body dark grey and re apply all original decals which I will have duplicated. I'll surely do a video diary of it soon.
i recenlty got a vintage Tyco turbo 7 sprint car. the rear bumper/cage is broken and more importantly the steering servo C ring is broken. any idea how i remove the back shell? i have a screw or 2 that i need that is hiding under it to get access to the electronics to have a chance of replacing C ring on the servo arm.
Sadly I dont have one of those to reference. The main issues with those cars is always anything near the wheels. Since those dont come off, you always fight with anything near them. I wish I could help more!

Jeez, ill try and look for the PCB's. I know that truck ran 20 years ago but no idea if it still would have. The servo is a standard motor driven unit that only goes to full left and full right respectively. This truck does not need input from the throttle like many cars before it did.
