@@Painless360 hi. I screwed up my ESC of no name by wrong calibration with my tx16s radio as I was not aware of the tones. Is there any universal way of returning the single ESC 30Amp to the original setting (factory reset) somehow? How?
I have returned to RC (20 years of building/flying/crashing planes) after a 10 year lull and have explored multirotors. I have spent a pile of cash teaching myself how to build and crash but have managed to learn basic FPV. Your You Tube video channel is like the University of Modern Radio Control and should be a must for all old timers re-entering the hobby. Thanks so much for all you have taught me!

Learned a bunch. Thanks! Putting together an FMS PT-17 and know almost nothing about today's RC radio tech, especially electric powered, so trying to get up to speed. Used to love flying gas/nitro planes using now-extinct FM radios. Was always worried someone would accidentally turn on 'my' channel 42 and crash my beloved plane. Glad that old tech finally slithered into the tar pits. Gotta say that today's RC tech is freakin' extraordinary! Cheers from Thailand!

Being a newcomer to this hobby trying to wrap your head around all the theory takes a f***ing university degree. At some point - usually around here with ESCs and BECs - smoke is coming from your brain and your hair is catching fire but you can't put it out, because your eyes are pointing in different directions. But dont worry, it's all fun and games until you realize everything you watched and read was made back in 2012 and everything's changed since. Yay!

Sure, they've been improvements and changes and firmware additions but the basic principles underlying everything are still exactly the same as they were 10 years ago. You have a great channel. I recently picked up the hobby again after a long hiatus (since teenage years). Now I will finally finish my Tamiya Gepard (with custom gearbox), together with my son! I am so much realizing how much we were in the dark back in the era before Internet and UA-cam! By the way, I now work for one of the leading manufacturers of small DC drive systems, so I have a much more professional angle towards the hobby. Still a lot of fun!
Welcome back to the hobby. A lot has changed in just the last two years. It's cheaper, we have more power using LIPOs and brusless motors, the parts and models are easier to get and repair and you'll need to reach for as PC more often now than in the 'old' days. It's even more fun now! Best of luck with the model and getting back into it all. The series called 'Introduction to Remote Control' may be a little noddy for you but may act as a reminder.. :D
Thank you for stating that these "brushless DC motors" are actually 3-phase motors (synchronous 3-phase specifically). I'm both an RC pilot and an electrical engineer so the "DC motor" false identification has always sort of annoyed me. I speculate that half of the hobbyists don't know and care. But the other half wants to learn and understand. Giving them the accurate information reduces confusion . Thank you 👍

I want to get the complete step by step procedure in setting up my Flysky FS CT6B to control a Sabertooth motor driver for 2 wheelchair motors. After I purchased the Flysky system I discovered not everything I needed to make it work was contained in the box. I became aware that I needed a separate power source for the receiver. Then I became further confused with ESCs & BECs. I'm talking about connections, current requirements, etc. My Sabertooth driver is dual 32 amps.... This all new to me.

Together with a colleague, I am looking to drive my tank with two BLDC (outrunner) motors (one for each track). We may use an Arduino to make a "digital differential", like some of the Tamiya DMD controllers. We're still in the early stages so I'm now exploring the current state of technology of RC, which your channel is proving to be of great benefit. On my channel there is an animation of the "Cletrac" differential, which is a very nice mechanical concept, although hardly suitable for RC.
You could also use a mix inside the transmitter you are using too. Look at the videos of brushless motors on twin engine 'planes. They use differential thrust to turn. Maybe that could work mixing the throttle channel with the channel you're using to turn? Best of luck with the project!
Thanks so much for your quick replies! I did consider this and will have to dive into it deeper. A requirement is that the tank does a "neutral turn" (pirouette). In the Tamiya controller, past a certain (steering) stick position, the motors will spin in opposite directions. Earlier my tank operated with two brushed motors, two Tekin reversible ESCs on two identical up-down sticks on the transmitter. This works fine but I really like the idea of controlling it as an RC car, but with the added "neutral turn" functionality. I will be uploading a video soon on the custom gearbox I already built (more than 20 years ago) and how we'll redesign it into a "high tech integrated drive system"!
Quickly researched it... looks like any transmitter with mix functions will do the trick just fine... thanks again! I'll have to find another project for that Arduino...

Please spread awareness about silicosis which is a fatal disease I had never heard of and worry it will destroy my life we were carpenters that built houses and in the usa have to have tie down anchors so we drilled into the concrete and cut fiber cement siding because they changed from plywood to it no one ever told us its fatal.
Very very educational. Best ESC explanation. My quadcopter got lost and was found a month later upside down in a puddle of water with battery missing. I cleaned it and dried it out and checked to make sure all the motors still turned freely by hand. After installing a new battery, i tried to fly it and it lifted off and hovered at 4 ft or so as usual but as soon as I tried to move it to the left, it drifted away and wouldn’t come back. I had to run after it to stop it. Could a bad ESC cause this drifting away issue?
Old RadioShack RC trucks were so durable, double the voltage... No worries, you will just strip the gears lol. Get a WPL C14 and go from 6V to 7.4.. Bang, cook the server straight away! No steering lol.
Now I run over a topic related to the ESC, that I find interesting: What does the frequency do and what does it mean for a motor - ESC combination? Is a frequency lets say 600Hz better than 450Hz? Or is there a kind of rule - lower kV lower frequency or does it have to do with the number of poles od a brushless motor? With a program card or with the TX the Hz is adjustable, but what is recommended for multicopter?
The frequency is the speed of updates to the ESC from the FC. Analogue servos and traditional ESCs normally update at 50hz or 50 times a second. Sounds like a lot right? Well, in practice a 50hz rate isn't enough for more aggressive moves with faster speeds so firmware like SimonK 6x the update speed and faster response were created. The pulses to the motor are managed by the ESC to match the throttle needed. Hope this makes sense.
Painless360 So does this mean if I have the option to choose between 490Hz and 600Hz, I should switch to 600Hz? (asking for Hobbywing XRotor black series ESC) Thank you.

Hello, thank you for yet another excellent video. Even though I have used them for years, it clarified my understanding of ESC's, especially the significance of SimonK. I do believe there is one thing that you could add to this video which I still don't quite understand. That is the difference between 'Rapid' and standard ESC's. In Open Pilot, one has to choose the type of ESC (as shown your very well done CC3D videos). Can any ESC be a rapid ESC? Are they special? Are they something we should aim for? Can a firmware change make a standard ESC rapid? Everything else about ESC's you have explained so clearly. Just a thought.
I have since bought 12v dc 0.18a brushless 2 wire fan. I bought a pwm controller to vary the speed but the fan did not even turn with the potentiometer in either position. Struggling to get any info even from suppliers. Can you advise what type of controller I need for this type of fan? Thankyou. Great videos.

Pretty much, as long as the ESC is rated for more current that the maximum the motor needs. Some motors may need tweaks to the settings though (advance etc).
Wow this is so useful! Just in the middle of building a scratch build wing and having clicking noises and warm motor, using a traditional esc type. Looks like the timing is my issue?
Have received my skyfun todaty with a 25Amp linear esc bec but i have no idea how can I use a separated batery in order to control telemetry in one side with its own Bec and the motor and throtle in the other ... do you guys have a video showing how to use 2 separated batts for tha5? Thank you ;)
thank you this is very helpful...i have quadcopter that only has two wires for each motor as they are brushed motors..the motors burn up allot ..i was wondering if there's was way to run the brushed motor in this quad with one of these speed controllers? or am i just crazy ..i'm a newb to this stuff ..i'm a mechanic too so i'm able to fix stuff..but only if i understand it ....which i don't at the moment
Not easily, brushed motors are used on the cheaper models. you dont mention the model you have but you could google for a brushless conversion kit for it. Best of luck!

I'm guessing you're not a regular viewer. If the ESCs have linear BECs then you can connect all the red power wires to the FC without a problem (normally). See my recent 'basics' video - ua-cam.com/video/xPDc6r6nRTU/v-deo.html
I use switched escs and I use the 5v of one for the FC, and the one for my camerasystem. The next for Ws2812b LEDs, and the last one to Charge my Actioncam while Filming. so all are used and I dont need an separat bec.
Very good video again. Can you tell me why my 20amp esc operates fine with a 3s li-po battery but when trying to use a 3S li-ion the throttle starts to play up. Full throttle and speed then begins to fall and then motor violently pulses
Is a brushless flight esc usable in a rc car with two Motors? Like the old wild dagger from tamiya? Because there is only brushed dual motor Controller for cars i can find.

Ok . The 3 wires put out 5v and one is a motor signal wire . I had the 5v+ 5volt - hooked to 5 volts to run the sinal wire hardware . Si i jys snipped them off shorter . I might make model airplanes now instead .
Thanks for the video learned a lot but I am working with a Mystery Fire dragon 80A ESC and still figuring about how to program it to go backwards and revers like a in an RC car and how to control it with a single signal wire.
+Derpy Herpy the answers for these things are usually in the documentation. If it's not then it's not supported. I'd ask the vendor the same question..

Hello Mr. Painless360, I've got some Optio ESCs (emax 40A) and trying to understand how to setup.@18:18 you say something about an "incoming rail". What do you mean? I just cut all the red wires from the ESCs to the flight-controler and then power only one of them on the side into the flight-controller from a seperate ubec, right? Almost, an ESC needs a 'PWM' signal to know how much power to send to the motor. In addition to a switch you will also need something like a 'servo tester' that can send the signal to the ESC for you.. Best of luck!

I have these Tarot 40A 2S - 6S ESC OneShot & SimonK Firmware with 5V BEC - TL2953, the specs say they are linear but you mentioned that linear are only for 4S Lipos. I have 6 of these going onto my Tarot 680 hexacopter, so now I'm a bit worried as to the suitability of these ESC,s.
They will be fine but I'd not use them to provide the 5v the flight controller and pieces need. I'd power it using a dedicated 5V BEC.. See the other videos where I cover this in the 'Introduction to Remote Control' and 'Quadcopter building for beginners' too..

Hey man great video tutorial very easy to understand, so thanks. I'm thinking of building copter but with a difference, I want to build one with 3 lift motors and two propulsion motors. So in otherwords 3 motors in the y axis and and 2 in the x axis. I'm just getting up to speed with ESC etc and wanted to know in principal would it be possible to control this set up and how one wuld go about wiring it? All help gratefully received
+Painless360 I am in the process of building a Blackout mini h, currently I have run into some problems. When testing my motors using Cleanflight 2 of 4 ESCs let out the magic smoke and possibly ruining the motors as well. I am sure all the pros check their ESCs before soldering to the PDB and to the motors, but to us newbies we just solder on and hope for the best. Unfortunately I learned my lesson the hard way and I will be getting a multimeter to test my ESCs next time. Some of us do not know how to check for continuity on the ESCs and/or the motors (including myself) so I thought it would be a great idea for a pro like yourself to do a video on that.
I am college student, and we are working on small team project this quarter. we planed to build a control moving platform can hold 50kg(with one 4 inch wheel). we have GForce 400kv motor, 120 ESC Brushless speed control, 8.4V battery, and 2.4ghz Radio System Transmitter. After we contected all parts, the motor only worked twice, then never work anymore. Could you tell us what's problem we might have and how to make it better? Thank you!
+ubbelohed Wu this is a little outside what we normally do here. But normal troubleshooting rules will apply. I'd check the motor driver and wiring as a first thing, then start to look at the logic and firmware on the controller. Best of luck with the project.
I'm a bit unclear on the OPTO ESC's. I was planning to use my OPTOs for motor only and using a separate 6V batt to power my servos etc. Do I need to use a separate BEC or can I just plug the 6V battery pack into my receiver BATT slot? Thanks for these videos, I subscribed.

One question I have is, what type of ESC should I use when using a standard 12v automotive lead acid battery as a power supply? I want to run an EDF using manual control for speed/thrust adjustment so I figured a servo tester connected to an appropriate ESC should do the job as I can use the manual mode potentiometer to control the speed but what about the battery type? Is this going to be an issue?
Any standard ESC that supports a 3S LIPO should be fine. The ESC doesn't care about the battery type, just that it is the right voltage and can supply the current it needs.. Best of luck!

I want to get the complete step by step procedure in setting up my Flysky FS CT6B to control a Sabertooth motor driver for 2 wheelchair motors. After I purchased the Flysky system I discovered not everything I needed to make it work was contained in the box. I became aware that I needed a separate power source for the receiver. Then I became further confused with ESCs & BECs. I'm talking about connections, current requirements, etc. My Sabertooth driver is dual 32 amps.... This all new to me.

Together with a colleague, I am looking to drive my tank with two BLDC (outrunner) motors (one for each track). We may use an Arduino to make a "digital differential", like some of the Tamiya DMD controllers. We're still in the early stages so I'm now exploring the current state of technology of RC, which your channel is proving to be of great benefit. On my channel there is an animation of the "Cletrac" differential, which is a very nice mechanical concept, although hardly suitable for RC.
You could also use a mix inside the transmitter you are using too. Look at the videos of brushless motors on twin engine 'planes. They use differential thrust to turn. Maybe that could work mixing the throttle channel with the channel you're using to turn? Best of luck with the project!
Thanks so much for your quick replies! I did consider this and will have to dive into it deeper. A requirement is that the tank does a "neutral turn" (pirouette). In the Tamiya controller, past a certain (steering) stick position, the motors will spin in opposite directions. Earlier my tank operated with two brushed motors, two Tekin reversible ESCs on two identical up-down sticks on the transmitter. This works fine but I really like the idea of controlling it as an RC car, but with the added "neutral turn" functionality. I will be uploading a video soon on the custom gearbox I already built (more than 20 years ago) and how we'll redesign it into a "high tech integrated drive system"!
Quickly researched it... looks like any transmitter with mix functions will do the trick just fine... thanks again! I'll have to find another project for that Arduino...
With modern transmitters you can actually do lots with them that you would need a Pi/Ardunio for in the past. Best of luck with the project!

Please spread awareness about silicosis which is a fatal disease I had never heard of and worry it will destroy my life we were carpenters that built houses and in the usa have to have tie down anchors so we drilled into the concrete and cut fiber cement siding because they changed from plywood to it no one ever told us its fatal.

Very very educational. Best ESC explanation. My quadcopter got lost and was found a month later upside down in a puddle of water with battery missing. I cleaned it and dried it out and checked to make sure all the motors still turned freely by hand. After installing a new battery, i tried to fly it and it lifted off and hovered at 4 ft or so as usual but as soon as I tried to move it to the left, it drifted away and wouldn’t come back. I had to run after it to stop it. Could a bad ESC cause this drifting away issue?
If it’s hovering ok then it’s unlikely. See my video on what to check if your Quadcopter drifts.. it may help..

These older ESCs were almost all linear as it was the cheaper way to do it.. Happy flying!
Old RadioShack RC trucks were so durable, double the voltage... No worries, you will just strip the gears lol. Get a WPL C14 and go from 6V to 7.4.. Bang, cook the server straight away! No steering lol.
Yep, running stuff on voltages they weren't designed for will cause bad things to happen.. Happy flying

Now I run over a topic related to the ESC, that I find interesting: What does the frequency do and what does it mean for a motor - ESC combination? Is a frequency lets say 600Hz better than 450Hz? Or is there a kind of rule - lower kV lower frequency or does it have to do with the number of poles od a brushless motor?
With a program card or with the TX the Hz is adjustable, but what is recommended for multicopter?
The frequency is the speed of updates to the ESC from the FC. Analogue servos and traditional ESCs normally update at 50hz or 50 times a second. Sounds like a lot right?
Well, in practice a 50hz rate isn't enough for more aggressive moves with faster speeds so firmware like SimonK 6x the update speed and faster response were created. The pulses to the motor are managed by the ESC to match the throttle needed.

I've often seen mentioned that the wires from the motor to the ESC should be extended (if needed) and not the wires from the power source. Your thoughts.
TheGusK This is right, the power to the ESC is always flowing in the same direction so keeping these shorter is good.

Hello, thank you for yet another excellent video. Even though I have used them for years, it clarified my understanding of ESC's, especially the significance of SimonK. I do believe there is one thing that you could add to this video which I still don't quite understand. That is the difference between 'Rapid' and standard ESC's. In Open Pilot, one has to choose the type of ESC (as shown your very well done CC3D videos). Can any ESC be a rapid ESC? Are they special? Are they something we should aim for? Can a firmware change make a standard ESC rapid? Everything else about ESC's you have explained so clearly. Just a thought.

I have since bought 12v dc 0.18a brushless 2 wire fan. I bought a pwm controller to vary the speed but the fan did not even turn with the potentiometer in either position. Look at the amp rating for the motor and get an ESC with a higher rating.. best of luck!

Pretty much, as long as the ESC is rated for more current that the maximum the motor needs. Some motors may need tweaks to the settings though (advance etc).

Have received my skyfun todaty with a 25Amp linear esc bec but i have no idea how can I use a separated batery in order to control telemetry in one side with its own Bec and the motor and throtle in the other ... do you guys have a video showing how to use 2 separated batts for tha5? Thank you ;)

thank you this is very helpful...i have quadcopter that only has two wires for each motor as they are brushed motors..the motors burn up allot ..i was wondering if there's was way to run the brushed motor in this quad with one of these speed controllers? or am i just crazy ..i'm a newb to this stuff ..i'm a mechanic too so i'm able to fix stuff..but only if i understand it ....which i don't at the moment
Not easily, brushed motors are used on the cheaper models. you dont mention the model you have but you could google for a brushless conversion kit for it.

I don't understand what you are asking. You shouldn't try and pull more than the rated amperage from an ESC..

Hi sir i have a question i have linear 30A escs.how do i wire it up to a tcmmrc f4 flight controller..im stuck on the part where the big red wire and black wire setup and then the smaller wires signal..ground ..you said in one video about not using red wire so i took them off.can u make a video on this..thank you
I'm guessing you're not a regular viewer. If the ESCs have linear BECs then you can connect all the red power wires to the FC without a problem (normally). See my recent 'basics' video - ua-cam.com/video/xPDc6r6nRTU/v-deo.html

Most ESCs allow you to reverse, but simply swapping any two of the three wires to the motor does the same thing... Happy flying
I use switched escs and I use the 5v of one for the FC, and the one for my camerasystem. The next for Ws2812b LEDs, and the last one to Charge my Actioncam while Filming.
so all are used and I dont need an separat bec.
Very good video again. Can you tell me why my 20amp esc operates fine with a 3s li-po battery but when trying to use a 3S li-ion the throttle starts to play up. Full throttle and speed then begins to fall and then motor violently pulses
LVC maybe? Usually needs dropping if using LiIon. See my videos on LiIon packs.. Happy flying

Ok . The 3 wires put out 5v and one is a motor signal wire . I had the 5v+ 5volt - hooked to 5 volts to run the sinal wire hardware . Si i jys snipped them off shorter . I might make model airplanes now instead .
Thanks for the video learned a lot but I am working with a Mystery Fire dragon 80A ESC and still figuring about how to program it to go backwards and revers like a in an RC car and how to control it with a single signal wire.
+Derpy Herpy the answers for these things are usually in the documentation. If it's not then it's not supported. I'd ask the vendor the same question..

Hello Mr. Painless360, I've got some Optio ESCs (emax 40A) and trying to understand how to setup.@18:18 you say something about an "incoming rail". What do you mean? I just cut all the red wires from the ESCs to the flight-controler and then power only one of them on the side into the flight-controller from a seperate ubec, right?

Almost, an ESC needs a 'PWM' signal to know how much power to send to the motor. In addition to a switch you will also need something like a 'servo tester' that can send the signal to the ESC for you.. Best of luck!

I have these Tarot 40A 2S - 6S ESC OneShot & SimonK Firmware with 5V BEC - TL2953, the specs say they are linear but you mentioned that linear are only for 4S Lipos. I have 6 of these going onto my Tarot 680 hexacopter, so now I'm a bit worried as to the suitability of these ESC,s.
They will be fine but I'd not use them to provide the 5v the flight controller and pieces need. I'd power it using a dedicated 5V BEC.. See the other videos where I cover this in the 'Introduction to Remote Control' and 'Quadcopter building for beginners' too..

Sir, I wish you would do one on Selecting the Appropriate or Properly MATCHING the MOTOR to the ESC, and Battery Requires. Do u use a 6s Battery Pack on a 90A Motor with a 180A ESX ? etc.,

Hey man great video tutorial very easy to understand, so thanks. I'm thinking of building copter but with a difference, I want to build one with 3 lift motors and two propulsion motors. So in otherwords 3 motors in the y axis and and 2 in the x axis. I'm just getting up to speed with ESC etc and wanted to know in principal would it be possible to control this set up and how one wuld go about wiring it? All help gratefully received

+Painless360 I am in the process of building a Blackout mini h, currently I have run into some problems. When testing my motors using Cleanflight 2 of 4 ESCs let out the magic smoke and possibly ruining the motors as well. I am sure all the pros check their ESCs before soldering to the PDB and to the motors, but to us newbies we just solder on and hope for the best. Unfortunately I learned my lesson the hard way and I will be getting a multimeter to test my ESCs next time. Some of us do not know how to check for continuity on the ESCs and/or the motors (including myself) so I thought it would be a great idea for a pro like yourself to do a video on that.
I am college student, and we are working on small team project this quarter. we planed to build a control moving platform can hold 50kg(with one 4 inch wheel). we have GForce 400kv motor, 120 ESC Brushless speed control, 8.4V battery, and 2.4ghz Radio System Transmitter. After we contected all parts, the motor only worked twice, then never work anymore. Could you tell us what's problem we might have and how to make it better? Thank you!
+ubbelohed Wu this is a little outside what we normally do here. But normal troubleshooting rules will apply. I'd check the motor driver and wiring as a first thing, then start to look at the logic and firmware on the controller. Best of luck with the project.

I'm a bit unclear on the OPTO ESC's. I was planning to use my OPTOs for motor only and using a separate 6V batt to power my servos etc. Do I need to use a separate BEC or can I just plug the 6V battery pack into my receiver BATT slot?

One question I have is, what type of ESC should I use when using a standard 12v automotive lead acid battery as a power supply? I want to run an EDF using manual control for speed/thrust adjustment so I figured a servo tester connected to an appropriate ESC should do the job as I can use the manual mode potentiometer to control the speed but what about the battery type? Is this going to be an issue?
Any standard ESC that supports a 3S LIPO should be fine. The ESC doesn't care about the battery type, just that it is the right voltage and can supply the current it needs.. Best of luck!
