- “The situation was out of control.”
Crew on the ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore issued an urgent mayday call when they realised there was “an immediate threat to life”, which was "the right call", explains marine accident investigator Gavin Pritchard.

God rest the souls of all who tragically lost their life in this incident and may the Lord also grant comfort to their families. 🙏. ❤From Scotland
My condolences to all concerned in this tragedy
🙏
Recovery, Loss of power, steering or main engines, and an ebbing tide pushing the vessel, no tugs. No time to do anything the water will take them anywhere.
The bridge was weak though to collapse like that it was definitely weak.
They only had time to steer directly into the pylon 🤣 Singapore should pay 100% and if they dont want to then no more visas to come to the USA.
Both the ship and the Seafarers are to blame for this tragedy.
Bridges are designed to bend ever so slightly vertically to account for strong elemental factors.
Not being struck sideways at a tension point
The point is, bridges are not designed to be hit by enormous ships!
The designers account for wind loads, normal loads, and add large safety factors, but you can't account for taking an entire leg out!
@@thomashenderson3901 The designers should have considered that it might be hit by a ship and put a protective barrier around the supports so the vessel would not damage the bridge. Just like the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay Bridge have. The San Francisco Bay Bridge has been hit by a ship and didn't even put a scratch in it. It hit the 20ft fender built around the base supports. It just damages the ship, not the bridge. The designer of that bridge did think about a ship hitting it.
It is strange such vessels are not supported by tugboats when there is nothing protecting the pillars, is this a matter of saving money?
If that is the reason, why is it we never hear how much money are saved?
It's America, it's always money
I bet there will be now!
The Baltimore Port Authority should have tug boats escorting all ships past this bridge. The Pilots are responsible for safety of the people, the environment and economy. The Captain is responsible in open waters.
There is also no evidence the ship lost propulsion as mentioned in the video. The ship appears to have lost control. Marine AIS shows the ship picked up speed to 8.9 knots prior to the collision then slowed to 6 knots seemingly after the anchor was released.
@@julianshepherd2038 - to have a couple of tugboats standby close to the bridge are considered too expensive, and nobody have the fantasy to imagine what could happen
@@TA-wg9oi - probably not establish protection of the pillars, if the vessel blackout it is not much captain and/or pilots can do, from my understanding the rudder have no effect if the propeller is not rotating
@@doncarlodivargas5497 Rudder force is generated by ship speed and not propeller rotation. The Golden Gate Bridge has pylon buffers fitted which ships have crashed into doing more damage to the ship than the buffer itself.
In 1975, the concrete Tasman Bridge in Hobart Australia was hit by an 11,000 tonne oil tanker. This bridge is of similar size to the Baltimore Key Bridge. Part of the Tasman Bridge collapsed, 12 people were killed and the ship sank.
Today, this bridge has traffic controlled lights to stop all vehicles when a ship passes under.
Be interesting to see what outcome and changes are made to this port.
Install support protection like EVERY CIVILISED COUNTY MANAGES...
A ship of that size should have had tug assist while in the harbour roads.
Someone has F#@ked up
If lost RIP🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹. Shout out to ship's crew for their work✌️☘️
What about liability of the insurers of the ship?
If history is anything to go by insurance companies will put off taking responsibility.
Many overseas shipping companies are self-insured or carry liability insurance for the damage they did, but it could take years even to collect the money. Most of those ships are flagged in countries that protect the shipping company to limit damage payouts. The families will not get a dime from the shipping company in reality, except after years of legal fighting and the protection the shipping company has. None of them are based in the U.S. like cruise ships are.
Every s hip is covered by an insurance company. Hull & Machinery cover. Ships also are covered by mutual insurance organization called Protection & Indemnity Clubs where every member pools their resources. In this case the Dali is covered by a certain amount under its P&I Club.
Why do Singapore ships always crash into bridges and Cable Cars?
They don't; there have been several other ships from other countries, too. There have been very few ships that crashed into bridges over the years.
when I saw the thumbnail for this video, I thought "yes. yes it has..." (then I realised that it's literally about a ship that actually lost control)
0:00 Not under command is what they should use:
The COLREGs state in Rule 3(f):
The term “vessel not under command” means a vessel which through some exceptional circumstance is unable to manoeuvre as required by these Rules and is therefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel.
Not saying it wasn't technical problems, but it's kinda suspicious that the ship kinda went for the bridge, like immediatley.
That's how it looked to me.
Wouldn't rule out the possibility of sabotage.

There is still none stop news and social media coverage of Palestine and the Ukraine war.

@@kimclarke5018 Yes it takes a long time for a ship of that size to stop. Momentum and physics were against them.
What they did do successfully is block the bridge from additional incoming traffic. They just didn't have enough time to get the workers off.
That's why you're on here commenting and have 0 clue on what you're talking about .. #FukBoi
From all what I have heard about this incident the crew tried their best in such a situation.
It is thought that is exactly what was done but the momentum was enough to drag the anchor.

Big mistake if true. Ship would have continued to drift straight otherwise.
Ukrainian captain? Cyber attack leading to power failure?
I know people really want to make this out to be a suspicious conspiratorial event, but I really do not believe this is, its pretty straightforward to me what happened
So it's realistically at least one year before any official accident investigation conclusions can be made public. Does this preclude journalists and other professional investigators from making allegations before such a long time? Don't the public need some kind of satisfactory explanation a little earlier of WHY what really happened?
It was a terror attack. Why would a ship be pointed at the piller???
No they deserve the correct explanation after a proper investigation not just a speedy one that satisfies your curiosity.
@@esecallum You're just clueless; go back to your basement. You don't know how a ship of that size works when it loses power. It has nothing to do with any terror attack; only an idiot would think it did.
There's video of the ship losing power and its lights, that meant it was no longer under control, dragging an anchor.
Now you either want a thorough investigation and reconsideration of bridge safety, or you want a quick explanation.

So sad for all the people on the bridge
A bridge that entirely collapses when a boat hits one support is a badly designed bridge.
Dude it's a tragedy, and it's not the design of the bridge. At least 68'000 tonnes rammed directly into the support no bridge ever designed can hold itself up without a support underneath it and no concrete support can stop a battering ram that weighs at LEAST 68'000 tonnes
EDIT: the Dali weighed closer to 96'000 tonnes apparently
Why is Federal government paying to rebuilt the bridge it was she ships fault
Well it lasted about 50 years. Not that badly designed. That Wii thing I bought my kid for Christmas gave up before 6 months was up..😢

@@zakbrewin1709it just lost control, it wasn't deliberate.. i trust the mainstream media
The bridge destruction = insurance fraud.
Only way people will know the full story. Reports from navigation, weather conditions and the route. I think the bridge was strong but never had to face that type of disturbance especially if its compressed iron/steel, plus cargo.
Shouldnt the ship company owners be on the hook for building a new bridge here instead of the United States government?
The statement made by Biden was that the ship owner/operator and their insurers would still be responsible, however federal money would be used in the short term to get things up and running sooner rather than having to wait for the other wheels to turn.
The U.S. will go after the shipping company, it just easier for the U.S. to go after the shipping company instead of the state doing it.
@@stephenludlum9746 not only that but it will allow for upgrades which insurance would not pay for.
that takes time. there needs to be immediate support straight away then they can pursue getting that money back right away
If a mayday call was made, why wasn’t the bridge closed immediately? Condolences to the families that lost loved ones. ❤
It still seems a bit strange there were no tugs for such a large vessel? Always about cutting costs! Is this the first bridge collapse we’re going to witness this year? Last year train crashes, this year bridges? Who knows how much this is going to affect the port and also travel routes.
It was closed, and the construction workers didn't have time to get off.
It is not strange; ships don't use tugs when they reach that area. They haven't before and never had an issue; this was just bad luck the engine stopped when it did. But it was not the first time ships had hit a bridge for the same reason.
Just as well they didn't have a loss of control over the media,

We still don't know this was an accident
you’re correct but so far there’s no evidence it wasn’t.
Yes, we do know it was an accident, nothing but an accident. Even the FBI said it was an accident. This is not the first ship to hit a bridge and will not be the last. The ship was under the command of two bar pilots that are U.S. citizens. Pilots are highly trained experts in ship navigation in confined waters and possess extensive knowledge of local conditions. Their role is to protect the people, economy, and environment of their area by guiding ships safely and expeditiously through the waters of their regions.
All ship also have data recorders, that will tell the NTSB what speed, direction, voice commands being given on the bridge, any other issues depending on the type of the data recorder.
@@stephenludlum9746 I wouldn’t go that far. We only know the ship lost power and issued a mayday and tried to take action to stop the ship. I agree that makes an accident probably the most likely, but until we have a root cause of the power failure we can’t be sure. It’s just as bad to speculate one way as the other. Let the NTSB figure it out. It probably won’t take all that long. Final report will be a year or two but a preliminary report should be available within a month or two I assume.
@@cosmicinsane516 We know 100% it was an accident. They already have the data recorded from the ship. And that two U.S. Citizens bar pilots were controlling the ship. It is not uncommon for a ship to have mechanical issues from time to time. Unfortunately, this just happened at the wrong time.
@@stephenludlum9746 Until we know the cause for the loss of power and steering, we can’t say that for sure. We can’t rule out an intentional act by someone, although there is zero evidence for that so far. However they are currently in the process of analyzing the data and interviewing crew, so I don’t think we will have to wait more than a few days for some sort of preliminary statement of the cause. I agree it is 99% probably going to be a complete accident; although negligence wouldn’t surprise me either. The facts will tell. Recovering the bodies and clearing the channel is the priority now, the NTSB will do a thorough job, they always do.
Investigate the O and O for malfeasance, failed safety, lack of proper maintenance. Greed and profits trumps the above.

There is more to this story than is first apparent, after watching the video over and over again in fast motion that ship can be seen to swerve right into the Bridge Pillar.
What happens to a ship when it loses propulsion?
The pillar sparks prior to collision that takes an engineer to figure out what would collapse a bridge like that so quickly
@@MagnusInsomniaWell it would continue to drift due to momentum and will be more subject to the will of the current dragging it into the bridge support. Also, what happens to a ship that drops anchor? It swings on the chain, possibly right into the bridge support.
@@MagnusInsomniacurrent to a bridge doesn’t pull the bow to the bridge leg
The wind could but why just the bow it’s possible but the main thing is why did the ship steer before losing power as you can see the lights go out after the ship turned to the support leg..

Do we believe the crew, the media, or the politicians? All ships have redundancy. Something is not adding up.
Oh FGS. The ship suffered a mechanical failure, loss of power/loss of steering. Once that happens the ship is completely out of control to the whims of mother nature's river/ocean currents and winds. Many ships have suffered mechanical failures in the past and will suffer mechanical failures in future. Same as how cars, planes, etc suffer mechanical failures. It's a fact of life. Everything mechanical can potentially fail. Don't start BS conspiracy theories.

Singapore government is not liable for anything. They didn't even cause the accident. We have no idea yet if the ship's owner was running the ship. A lot of the shipping companies lease their ships out to other companies. So, the company that leases the vessel provides the crew and is responsible for any accident. So, all that needs to be determined out.
Was Biden the captain.
No, but he voted for the infrastructure bill that the republicans opposed . . . probably best not to make an accident into a partisan issue.
Why did they not why did they not steer into the gaps
Remember, just like aircraft, ships operate in a media that is itself moving. This is an estuary in a river where there is a flow out to sea plus tidal interaction. What was the state of the tide - flowing in, flowing out or slack water? ships can only steer if they are moving faster than the water that is carrying them along. Also, the inertia in a ship weighing around 110,000 tonnes takes some overcoming requiring time and space!

Deliberate?
No! As has been stated. The ship lost power and steering, putting it completely out of control to the whims of the rivers currents and the winds resulting in it drifting uncontrollably into the bridge. This happens to ships sometimes as they are mechanical and everything mechanical can potentially fail. The reporter even mentioned other previous incidents of ships losing power/steering and running aground or crashing into things. It happens sometimes, exactly how planes crash sometimes due to mechanical failure. So no not deliberate.

obviously a simple case of corruption, bridges and buildings are supposed to be designed to withstand foreseeable accidents like ship collisions... clearly this ship is beyond the safety limits of the port, they just chose profit over safety. Then a complete lack of regulation surrounding maintenance too.
its ironic they even have port pilots that steer the ships out, because no way would a company risk taking responsibility for such an accident themselves.
this is the problem when you have an entire country governed by sociopaths, they cant comprehend anything beyond the most simple concepts, theyre incapable of wrapping their heads around things like 'statistical inevitability', 'exponential' or even 'trust'. they'd rather cobble together a diy submarine and charge a million bucks for dives to the titanic and call it 'innovation'.
And I assume you have facts and proof to back these claims up? Or did you just de ide rhats what happens and vomited into a comments section?
@@dbarrett747 didnt realise it was such a contentious subject, before i focused my study on neuroscience i studied engineering... its routine practice for potential accidents and disasters to be factored into the design of a structure so youre not wasting a huge amount of resources on something that could potentially go down tomorrow. The bridge was built in the 70s when there werent ships of that size passing through the ports, as such its obvious someone since made the decision that the profit larger ships could bring was more important than what the structural integrity of its surrounding structures allowed for.
Then, we all know the corrupt state of the world economy, america in particular where there are little to no protections against corruption in government. Regulatory bodies are routinely defunded in america and as such corruption becomes more common place anywhere a buck or two could be saved regardless of the risk generated, resulting in things like botched quality assurance/maintenance on things like structures, vessels and aircraft. The ship was repeatedly losing power meaning some kind of problem went unaddressed before leaving port, the bridge itself couldve also been compromised beyond the fact it was already at significant risk to the surrounding vessels.
America is well known to be a highly fear driven culture with high levels of trauma and mental health issues amongst its citizens and a lack of regulation around toxic substances used in its food, construction and manufacture that cause things like neurological disorders (heck, asbestos is only now being banned, decades after the rest of the developed world). The stress/fear hormone, cortisol, is well known to shape the brain to a sociopathic manner, enlarging the amygdyla (the primitive chimp brain) and shrinking grey matter (reducing cognitive depth and complexity) - its why bootcamp subjects soldiers to high stress, to make a more fearfully reactive tool that doesnt think too deeply on what theyre doing. The countries values are also overtly sociopathic in nature where every aspect of its medical, education and justice systems is built to benefit the rich and powerful whilst trampling the poor and powerless.
With things only getting worse, Its safe to say the country is run by sociopaths, particularly with their recent obfuscation of the genocide in gaza. Sociopayhs are also well known to be risk takers, hence their tendency toward crime. Risking infastructure for personal gain will always be worthwhile to the sociopathic mind, even if the cost of those risks are greater in the long run and particularly if they believe they are likely to be far from consequence when an accident resulting from their actions occurs.
The odds would be more like 99.9999%. It was just an accident. There are usually around 3 to 6 personnel in the engine room when leaving port and where movement is restrained, so that means everyone of the engine room was on the scheme. Any time the engine is shut down or has issues the first thing it does is set off alarms, including on the bridge. Also, it would be straightforward to go to the control room and playback on the console the alarms and what the cause was without even having to access the data recorder. And I'm sure that was the first thing the FBI and NTSB did. Some modern ships also have a video system that records the engine room activities, not sure if this ship does. I'm also sure the FBI interviewed the engine room crew before they went home. It is sure the FBI has ready and interviewed the crew.
The NSTB has no authority to hold the crew until they have been interviewed in the U.S. Only the FBI/DOJ does. So that was done immediately with both the FBI and NSTB. So by now, the FBI has a very good idea if this was caused on purpose.
