i read in the NY times from about +17.000 outdated bridges with bad protections for cases like this in the US. For the economy, this was probably a bridge in the top twenty of the outdated bridges without protection in the US. With a protected bridge the ship and the protection dolphins will have maybe some scratch right now.

We have a government that does nothing but distract us with meaningless BS so we never hold anyone accountable anymore. We spend billions on agencies full of people with high salaries that are supposed to be on top of these issues if it’s so easily done. If ships got bigger, why didn’t someone do more to fortify or barricade those supports. Could have easily been a couple hundred cars falling to their death, but we give these important jobs as charity and hold no one accountable when the fail to do them!
Likely that the still standing portion of the Key Bridge will also be demolished. The replacement bridge will probably look quite different and be much wider and taller.
If the approaches are still good utilizing them in the new design should speed up the reconstruction. But somebody's bro in law would not get the contract ...so you are probably correct
The crew is still on board because you can't just power down the ship. Television news coverage has become so vapid that I can't even watch it anymore.
In many cases these days tho ships are evacuated the second water intrusion or loss of power near shore happens. so funnily enough it is abit unusual. but on the other hand they might suddely need to fire up the main engine and move.
Most of the crew on the MV Dali are very low paid. Unless they are forcefully removed or the ship is in catastrophic danger, most would have to wait for the term of their hire contract to expire before a flight would be arranged to get them homeward.

Yes, there is a lot of weight on the bow and it has grounded into the riverbed. The more weight they can remove, especially damaged containers, the easier it will be to pivot the ship and tug it out of the way.

Sudden tragedies become easier to understand with hindsight. I remember the Lebanon explosion. It was easy to prevent but no one took the necessary actions. The first thing we do is apply guilt and shame, neither are particularly productive. The story of The Emperor Has No Clothes kind of applies but if this story was written today we would say The Emperor Was Caught With His Pants Down, which goes back to shaming. What does apply to this collapse is, please, everybody and anybody who sees a flaw in a design, please speak up and keep speaking up until the issue gets corrected. Eventually someone will make the decisions necessary to stop a calamity before it happens. With the emperor’s clothes story it took a kid, someone outside the decision making process to spot an error in judgement. America is full of outsiders. That’s a strength, when they speak up.
I’m glad action was taken to clear the bridge to minimize how many people got hurt.
All the news outlets put headlines like this one saying "Debris begins to be removed". But, guess what, not one has a photo of a piece of the bridge being lifted off. Where is this debris removal ??? Not looking to see ever more people repeating everything we already know. Show us the salvage in progress. And, I mean much more than two guys using a cutting torch !!

This should alert the US and they should rebuild the bridge and use decent remmingwerken in front of the pillars. Remmingwerken (literally braking works) are a Dutch word for a sort of bumpers or barriers and mooring posts of wood and steel in the water on both sides of the bridge pillars. To protect bridge pillars against collisions with floating objects. The harbor of Baltimore has been proven to be vulnerable by this bridge. An enemy could easily do the same as this rudderless ship did and an important harbor will come to a standstill and an important traffic connection is ruined. Accidentally they say, but it came in handy for them and it was probably a test. See what the impact and disruption was and how long it took to repair or to detour the data. We are more vulnerable to Chinese, Russian, Iranian and North Korean sabotage than the general public knows. And the general public has to agree to budget money for these things. And that’s the weak spot in democracies. We see it with the MAGA Republicans, not agreeing to a bill for military support for Ukraine. That’s what Putin likes to see. The effect of his actions must be satisfying for him. Just one troll factory in Moscow and a bit of sleaze money and the MAGA Republican cave in. They listen to Putin without realizing they did. I must give Putin credit for it, it is smart, it works and for only a little effort.

It’s not good enough to react to a tragedy, which could have been much worse is a couple hundred cars were on it. We pay people who make huge salaries and benefits in government that are supposed to make sure these events don’t occur! If Traffic and shipping vessels got larger and this was so easy or inevitable, then why didn’t they build some protection around them, we spend billions and have agencies for everything to avoid this kind of thing, only difference was people were held accountable back years ago!

I would think that the ship owners and all of the people who will eventually receive the cargo would be extremely eager to see the ship be on its way to its destination(s). I certainly hope they fix the electrical problems before the ship finally leaves! Perhaps that can be sorted out now while the bridge wreckage is being removed?

@@user-fj7df3ng7z The ship won´t go to it´s original destination (Sri Lanka). Once it has been freed of the debris it will probably be unloaded and than sent to a shipyard for damage assessment and repairs. The damage to the bow does not apprear to be critical but needs to be repaired anyways.
Where's the shipping companies insurance, in on this. Who is the shipping companies insurance, what's their responsibility,. Risk management,....
It will probably take a decade to get the Insurance carriers to pony up. Do you want an $80 billion port to shut down and wait? Or do you want to see them clear the channel and get the port operating again?

The port will open pretty quickly yes, but that bridge will be gone for at least 5 years and more than likely 6-7 years.

Just so everyone realizes, the crew probably has to stay on the ship. Chances are, they don't have Visa's, so legally, they can't go on land. Also, right now, they are still on foreign soil. And to a certain degree, international treaties and laws cover them. If they step foot on US soil, they are automatically under US law. And, so much as it's pretty clear this was an accident, if you were a crew member, would you want to take the chance of getting arrested?

Of course, they will stay on the ship, which is their job and their home, why would anyone think otherwise? They are used to being there for months at a time, still getting paid, no problem.

While the crew is stranded in the harbor, it's not as if they're drifting at sea. They presumably have whatever they need to go for days and weeks sailing around the world. Unless they run short on food and water -- which could be replenished by the crews who have been inspecting the ship and commuting back to land -- they should be able to stay on board as long as it takes to get the ship unstuck. What happens AFTER that, we'll have to wait and see.
That is correct, and the next step when free, and cleared by authority, would be to be offloaded, then proceed somewhere for repairs, which the management should be organizing now. They would possibly fly the crews home or transport them to another ship in the fleet.@@BSNFabricating

Ship is NOT at dock - required to remain crewed. Where how would the go if left the ship? Do they have visas?
The ship still needs to be maintained. Despite the collision the vessel has apparently not suffered critical damage. In the ship´s bow there isn´t much machinery. The engines, bridge and crew quarters are all further back and not directly affacted. Once the debris is cleard from the bow, the vessel need to go to a port facility for unloading and than to a ship yard for repairs.
Also there is an investigation ongoing on the causes of the collision.

What an ignorant post. There’s currently nearly 400 people working around the clock, anticipating at least 3months of effort to get this disaster cleared. Just the debris draped across the ship alone is estimated at 4000 tons.
It seems their should be buffers Infront and rear of the bridge pillars like the Kersh bridge has .Ukraine has been trying to destroy for months Year's??

So far no accurate time line exists that shows when the ship exited the channel it was meant to be in to pass the bridge unharmed. Once that is known, then let's ask exactly what the man in control of steering actually did during the remaining few minutes before impact.
the ship lost power. There was no "steering" without power. They radioed a mayday, which helped the Police stop the traffic from going onto the bridge, saving lives. Each report isn't going to spell out the whole thing, go watch videos from that day and since.
He threw it into reverse before impact, a propeller that size does something called “Prop Walk.”
Until it reaches speed it actually pulls the stern sideways in the direction of rotation, this causes the front to move in the opposite direction, in this case it looked like it steered into the bridge.

Ships have backup generators for steering
sure they have. But all worked with electric and the power comes from diesel generators. Dirty fuel, a computer that not work, or maybe press some wrong buttons, etc. and you get a blackout for some minutes. On open sea it's not a problem but in small areas near a outdated bridge without protection, 5 min. blackout is enough for a disaster like this.
to me looks like the ship steerer towards the main column of the bridge where if it had gone straight even with a black out it probably would have passed through.. idk

For sure not, it was made out of many many thousands of pounds of steel. Engineers estimate that the single piece laying on the ship is 3000-4000 tons.

People's lives are affected by the bridge collapse. But please do understand it's no faulty of Singapore being the flag bearer. The pilots and crews are all indians from india, with or without experience. There has to be some competency and complacency issues that lead to the accident. I suggest re examination of the whole fleet of indian employees. We don't need another infrastructure to collapse.
who cares if the come from India, Singapore, US or elsewhere. The ship was build in South Korea, maybe with workers from the Thailand, Mars, Jupiter, Klingon, etc.
Same with the bridge, maybe workers from the US, China, Mexico, Mars, Pluto, etc. build it 40+ years ago.
Last small repair of the ship was in Baltimore and checked by the Baltimore port authority.
There are many possible sources of error that a crash like this happened.

Every Vessel of that size has at least one, if not two, licensed Bay pilots on board. They get on at the mouth of the bay and also when the ship is ready to exit the bay. These Experienced Captains know every shoal and issue within the Bay and The Patapsco River.
They take command of the ship until the destination has been reached.

The crewmen should have made sure all was functioning good or great on the ship. Did the crewmen think that concert would stop the ship? How long after they left the port did the crewmen noticed the ship was not functioning good? Why did the crewmen alert the works they do not have a horn on the ship to alert the people on the bridge. Hope the ship company is sued, so the families will live and survive through this hard times.
The insurance company will likely have to pay out more than $4B for this accident

Or why was a ship that size not escorted under the bridge by tug boats it was said yesterday the crew did drop anchor to try and stop this from happening as with a lot of modern ships a lot of the equipment is operated by computer, power goes down so does the computer,

The US Coast Guard said it had previously undergone “routine engine maintenance” in port. This was checked by the port authority. After the inspection, the ship was cleared to continue sailing by the port authority.
Maybe the company who do the engine maintenance make a mistake and the inspector of the port authority don't see it?
