Well. This came out at a perfect time. I've played the game for 8 years, and only recently got into playing ranger (with the exception of druid Healer for raids). The talk throu of all pets, abilities and usefulness was incredibly helpful. Thank you!
Awesome refresher! I have a few friends who are core/f2p/HoT only, so I've been trying to theorycraft some builds for them to play fractals with us, and some of the places I've been stuck on the most was trying to min max which pets would be most effective in each case
I've run Reef Drake/Marsh Drake and Amored fish quite a bit in fractal, both are pre-HOT. The thing about Marsh Drake, is the insects he spits out will track a fast moving target, where as you need practice to get the Reef's F2 to hit every time. Besides all the armor and toughness, Amored fish heals with one of his bites, and rarely dies.
Ah thank god I found this guide! I just made a ranger and I’m loving it! Didn’t know all the different pets gave different ULTS, the builds you can do with different pets is kinda overwhelming but this video is great
Awesome guide, I leveled my Ranger thru tomes of knowledge and now he's a lvl 80 petless Ranger (just drake unlocked) and im looking forward to exploring maps with him unlocking pets :)
"To help with the algorithm" But seriously, great pet guide. I recently started playing again, after another long break, and picked up a ranger! I got her leveled to 80 through dungeons and such, but I only have 4 pets total, so this guide is oerfect for me xD
When i started out, i chose the Ranger because it seemed like a good class to start with. Hunter-like classes also use bows, which is one of my favourite weapons to use in RPGs. My only fear when starting out, was that the Ranger class would turn out to be just a boring repetivite "left click enemy, bow go brrrr"-playstyle. But now that i see how many pets you can actually use, it seems i have a lot to learn, and the Ranger is a complex class despite being easy to play. It was a very good and easy to understand guide, will come back to this video when i reach 80 and try to "optimize" my character :D
Im one of those lollygaggrs who likes to play around with those unpopular pets, and most of them are fun to play in one way or the other, especially just running around exploring and doing open world stuff - I do take alot of your advice doing events and metas though, thanks!
Just found your channel recently, and I absolutely love it! Your snark and jokes are awesome too lol. Thank you for making this video, it saved me quite a bit of research :D
Great video! No class will ever supplant my beloved Thief/Daredevil, but I've really been enjoying the ranger lately despite having very little idea how to play them effectively. This definitely helps!
Glad I found this video, thanks. As a new player I had no idea a ranger could pick up additional pets like this. Gonna need to go back and go pet taming. :D Also, would love to see critters like the wolves, hyenas, etc get pack buffs if you run with more than one of them.
I'm planning on returning to the game and was thinking of maining Ranger. I'll probably just fool around with whatever pets I want casually while leveling, but it is good to know the meta picks if I ever wanna cut my teeth on the most hardcore of the hardcore content.
i started playing gw2 about a month ago and started with a power soulbeast. but i almost never used any of the pet abilities in combat except for running away from the enemy. there was just too much choice for pets, so i never really looked into that. thanks for the great overview :) this will probably improve my gameplay quite a bit
Crapping on my Hyena like that :( I love Hyena, and use it in WvW on my Druid (Smokescale / Hyena, most often). I've tried tons of variations with pets but absolutely love the ability to have two pets 80% of the time that both do knock-downs and attacks. And just swap out to the other pet whenever it isn't available. To this day, I'm still pretty sure everybody's right, and I'm wrong to use the Hyena - but I've been liking it a lot. Even just 'dropping' the Ally while running away, to have it try to use a knock down on the nearest target, and then have my actual pet attack another has been nice. Or having the ally stay on top of an enemy player while disengaging for some healing; while recalling the Hyena itself to keep it alive, before reengaging with the Smokescale. Biggest shame is, of course, that the Ally doesn't linger when you swap pets.. boooh That being said, I do miss the Grey Wolf's fear sometimes. PS. Since you've shown us all your pet names, here are my most used - Smokescale (Smokey) - Grey Wolf (Bandit) - Hyena (Dalton) - Rock Gazelle (Rocky)
Another fun amazing guide Muk, also was very nice of you to tell new or returning players when an why to use what type of pet to get the most of it. You continue to be a smile for the wife and I anytime we get time to see your videos or stream you Global Icon and Brand Ambassador good sir. Our best to you an the family and as always the one true CHIP
I'm taking notes. No, literally... See: ice drake(good leveling pet), rock gazelle(dmg & control), lynx(condition dmg superbeast), warthog(hybrid superbeast), electric wyvern(control), bristleback(ranged), smokescale(stealth & hard to escape pvp), bird(hawk or owl, mobility pvp), wolf(fear), jacaranda(self-healing tank with immobilize & call lightning, also gives you good healing as superbeast), fanged iboga(highest dps pet unmerged) :P
I'm a relatively new Ranger so this video is for me but it is weird to see someone making this kind of content given the age of the game. I'm not sure if someone made a video about this topic. Guides usually say pick this for dmg, this for cc, and this for tank.
If you have to chose a pet for its ability to cc as a ranger or druid. Juvenile Rock Gazelle is the best one. Because Head Toss cooldown is only 20s and Lightning Assault (Juvenile Electric Wyvern) is 30s. Both of them have the same cast time (3/4s) and cc value (232). And a small correction Wing Buffet applies its cc one the first hit.
Something worth mentioning about Hyena for Soulbeast is that it provides some great CC options when merged. F1 and F2 are a cripple and a knockdown respectively, with the F3 skill being a short-range pull. I believe unmerging after that will also prompt the Hyena to use its own knockdown skill to initiate combat, making it great for smashing through breakbars.
oh thanks for this video. i just started playing and made a ranger. and was feeling that my pet game is really lacking and i need to learn more about them also made a reaper and loving that class as well. any reaper content coming?
Say what you will, my favourite pet will always be my carrion devourer. Why? I love him. Needles is the best little buggy boy. I have never ever *ever* swapped him out since around when I first started playing in 2013. He is and will always be a staple in my builds. We are a fantastic condi soulbeast together and I would never ever want that to change, powercreeping expansion pets be damned 💙 Anyhow, thank you for the nice informative video! It’s definitely going to help narrow my options when I decide to finally choose a permanent second slot pet ^^
If you're playing Condi Soulbeast you only have 2 options really. Jacaranda or Fanged Iboga. Personally i use the jacaranda in situations where i need more healing options and the fanged Iboga when i'm trying to dish out as much dps as possible. It's your personal preferrence oc, but i got those 2 in my slots and i'm not regretting it.
This is why I use my Rock Gazelle even when it doesn't make mechanical sense. Wobbles is adorable and I love him. All other considerations are secondary. (Although I do pair him with my electrowyvern, Brannigan, when I'm not a Soulbeasty)
My first gw2 character was a ranger (of course LMAO) and to be honest,,, I had no idea what I was doing, but I did get a Fanged Iboga fairly quickly,, which saved my ass so many times,,, and I dont know what it is about them but they're hands down my favorite pet in terms of design and combat. I main my Tempest now,,, but these videos make me want to use my ranger more.
What are you talking about? I use my Jungle Stalker all the time it's F2 is a might buff. Brown Bear clears up status effects. Krytan Drakehound with immobilized never used? Idk if I buy that also can Tiger be used for PVE?
In solo play you can use whichever pets make you happiest. In high levle play you will have one person in your group in charge of keeping 25 stacks of might on the party, and a support/healer that cleanses the party any time its needed with a much shorter cooldown than the bears. Again, they are useful for niche situations I just named off the ones most commonly used and where.
So how do you think it made me feel when he stated that one of my main pets (out of just 2 that I use) was "never used in any serious play"? LOL Went from feeling like a badass to a filthy casual noob in no seconds flat. But the good news is I now have a mission to acquire some of the best pets and enjoy a whole new experience. Thanks Mukluk!
god dang i played through the entire POF with no specialisations and the drake and was wondering why I didn't have that screen and just remembered that I have never changed the build on my ranger since everything unlocked lmaooo
where did you get your armor costumes? that you are wearing in this video and you have any good armor costume that are free if yes it will be cool if you can link them or something too ^"^
Honestly, I use mostly the hyena in WvW. Love the abilities as a soulbeast. Crippling Leap is great for movement, Brutal Charge causes knockdown and Prelude Lash is great to draw multiple enemies to you and then kill them all with axe 5. I also just love hyenas. Altough my friends would tell you that I probably hate them, because I'm constantly shouting at my hyena pet to shut up. And now I have to uninstall Gw2, because hyenas are not canines, they are not even Caniformia (dog-like). They belong to the other big branch of Carnivora: Feliformia (cat-like). So they are more closely related to cats, but most closely related to Mongooses and Malagasy carnivorans (like Fossas).
I just picked up GW 2 again and playing my newby Ranger. So this will help alot. I definitely want to have a Shark for underwater lol. And that weird floating tree thing hehe. It'll be nice to break from the norm with these types of pets.
Very interesting guide! Also I do agree with you when you said that the older pets need to be looked at. However what I think they could do to address this could be whatever the new Ranger elite specialization is. If this new specialization could give all your old pets a nice boost to how they perform as a whole then that could be absolutely amazing.
They do tend to update many core/older pets each expansion along with adding 5 more, but the expansion pets tend to be power crept just like the elite specializations. I agree that there is always room for tweaking to make sure everything is useful or “best at” somewhere or some thing. But like Pokémon when there are so many, some will end up feeling fairly useless.
I remember Phoenix being a pet in GW1 which if I'm not mistaken you could only get after the final mission / encounter with Shiro. Might be a pet that they'll add in Cantha? Thanks for the guide!
I learn by doing. If you could give an order of pets to use to get a feel of them what would they be? E.g. I complete Queensdale with these 2 pets, then Kessex with these 2, the Caledon with these 2. May you also include the "bad" pets so you can see and experience *why* they are bad.
Aw man... my favorite pets to use on my main ranger are some of the worst pets apparently (snow tiger and fire wyvern). :) I will have to think about trading at least one of them for another standard.
Man, I wish they improved pets. Every ranger hates their pet at some point, even though they're supposed to be our invaluable companion. Even just improving graphics and animation quality would go a long way towards making that actually feel true, like it does for everyone with mounts.
Can we get all these pets before level 80? Like if I wanted to get the Jacaranda or Fanged Iboga while I'm still leveling my first character can I travel to their locations, however difficult it might be to avoid the mobs? I got myself a lynx very early on through a fun and dangerous trek but don't know how to access the expansion maps (I have the expansions).
Nice. I found this looking for information on the Search and Rescue function of Ranger Pet's. I can't seem to make this work in the game. It's supposed have my pet teleport what I'm trying to res to my location or res it itself and it just doesn't seem to do anything like that. What it does do is give me an extra healing function - but - the thing I wanted - was to be able to res when what I was trying to res was right under a boss. That sounds like what it is supposed to do - but - it does nothing like that - unless I'm doing something wrong. .
I use search and rescue when druid healing. It will teleport a downed ally to you if possible (if one is within range) then your pet will start ressing it, as long as you don't give the pet another order. If someone is in range but can't be teleported to you (such as if they are on a higher or lower elevation) the pet will port to them and begin rezzing.
@@MuklukUA-cam Yeah. I've been using Search and Rescue for some time with my Ranger - all it does is increase regeneration for me. No effect on anyone else. .
It's been ages, but didn't you have to go to the Hall of Monuments with your portal stone to get to the area with the tameable gw1 pets? Did they change this so that they are automatically on your list? Or am I misremembering this.
Just started playing this game after 5+ years not playing...I am a ranger with a raptor mount now. Pets seem to be OP? can literally tank for me waaaay too easily and take little to no damage (I am level 25).
Just use the fanged iboga for anything.. trust me it does anything you need. It kills so quickly that you don't really need to heal or worry about your build. It does very well with condi dps and with power dps as well.
Smokescale best Ranger Pet. They nerfed Smokescale's dps a year ago (FUCK YOU PVP WHINERS!), and unfortunately it shows. It used to have the highest Pet dps, but they knocked it down, so now Fanged Iboga has the highest.
there are A couple of Voice changing Programs im not saying ditch the Filters U could add Voice changing TO add a chipmunk voice About 3 Videos ago from my own i am using a Voice changing For Some Comedy i imagine it as my rangers voice LOL
Hall of monuments doesn't work anymore apparently. When I enter ANY of my characters spelled correctly with same capitalization it tells me ERROR , check spelling. BUmmer
On a brand new, free account, they don't have access to LA until one character on the account reaches level 30 or 35. But! There is always one WP unlocked in each racial starting zone (not the cities).
I wish the pets were more balanced... I want to play with a wolf or Bear but the smokescale, rock gazelle are just too good. When doing casual open world stuff I still use my bear
By the games definition of "pets", yes. Necromancers have some undead minions, mesmers can summon clones of themselves, and engineers have turrets and a few other minor things tho.
Well. This came out at a perfect time. I've played the game for 8 years, and only recently got into playing ranger (with the exception of druid Healer for raids). The talk throu of all pets, abilities and usefulness was incredibly helpful. Thank you!
No joke, my ranger hit 80 yesterday and it's my 2nd to last character to max level leaving only Revenant.
i started ranger too 2 days ago and yesterday spent searching stuff regarding pets, what a timing!
My favorite part about Ranger pets is seeing all the fantastic names people give them. Yours did not disappoint, Muk.
my character is Norn and my pet name "Da Norn is my Slave"
3:01 Bears
4:12 If you are level 1
6:19 Moa
7:17 Cats
9:20 Wolves
11:02 Birds
12:25 Spiders
13:02 Pigs
14:57 Wyverns
16:25 Bristleback
17:22 Smoke scale
18:35 Jacaranda
19:57 Iboga
20:49 Rock Gazelle
21:03 Water pets
21:17 Reef Drake
21:34 Armor Fish
21:57 Shark
22:35 Jelly fish
After I finish this I find there is the same list in description lol
Nice guide as always! Jacarandas are the ones that haunts my nightmares, even their sound is... unnatural...
Aeeeeeeee. Aeeeeeeeee. Aeeeee.
Love it. xD
Ye o hate their immob in pvp :(

Oh yis, the ranger babies.
They protecc and attacc and save your booty when you make very bad mistakes.

Thank you for the video my new eagle(seal) an i are quite content after i followed the link.
Ok, now I get why meeting a ranger in pvp is so darn frustrating.
yeah, unlike WoW where it's burn the hunter down, move on, GW2 made ignoring a pet lethal.
Best pet name ive seen so far is a Siege Turtle baby named Oogway with a Gun. Have you any opinions on the new pets?
black moa is the best cc pet... (on comand)

False! Black bear.

at least it's not like WoW, where every pet patch made them more and more the same. By Pandaria expansion, only the skins were different.
Can we get all these pets before level 80? *Fight Shrub!* lmao.. Nice to actually see a pet named though, kinda sad when you see juvenile so and so.. =/
How can i age my pet?
The juvenile form is so tiny. Does it ever get larger, like Garm?
I got notificated for this video after 6 days🌝
Are there any updates to this since End of Dragons came out? Is the Fanged Iboga still the best?
It is still the best for plain old pve dps BUT that may change tomorrow. Tomorrows patch (aug 23rd 2022) has many adjustments to ranger pets.

@@MuklukUA-cam Just used that web page to Charm a few more pets. Thanks!
.
@@MuklukUA-cam Yeah. I've been using Search and Rescue for some time with my Ranger - all it does is increase regeneration for me. No effect on anyone else.
.
sounds cool,i`l try ranger
In summary: A pet's ugliness is directly proportional to it's usefulness, with the exception of the electric wyvern.
Totally true for that floating plant thing
It's been ages, but didn't you have to go to the Hall of Monuments with your portal stone to get to the area with the tameable gw1 pets? Did they change this so that they are automatically on your list? Or am I misremembering this.
You are remembering correctly, that's part of the process
I personally adore the Murellow as a tank pet. Used it to clear a lot of the hero points in HoT solo. They have like 5000 vitality.
Just started playing this game after 5+ years not playing...I am a ranger with a raptor mount now. Pets seem to be OP? can literally tank for me waaaay too easily and take little to no damage (I am level 25).
A pet that is high toughness can make the leveling process much easier, such as a bear. That strategy is great for when you are running around solo.
@@MuklukUA-cam Trying to work on my second mount on my instant level 80 toon I made.
It would be cool if you made a similar guide but with engi turrets
BUmmer
Elementalist can have pet as well?
The closets would be the elementals that ele's can summon with timed lifespans.
I believe all capital city waypoints are automatically unlocked, so LV 2 characters don't need to use portals in LA
On a brand new, free account, they don't have access to LA until one character on the account reaches level 30 or 35. But! There is always one WP unlocked in each racial starting zone (not the cities).
Imma make it work. Drake, devourer, spider, moas. They're the coolest
It's such a shame that hyena is never used :')
I just like my yeens!
100% agree.
A pet that summons pets? yes please
Here we see mukluk and all of his pets names haha
You don't think Amored Fish should be called 'Fluffy"? That's my favorite.
Now the question is, why does an owl have more hp than you? How does that make any sense in any universe?
Deleting my revenant right now. This sounds much more interesting
Anyone know if you can STILL unlock the stuff in Guild Wars 1? I own it from back in the day, and its linked to my arenanet account...
Yes, you still can.
Hi, How much this guide still valid in 2024 ?
I wish the pets were more balanced... I want to play with a wolf or Bear but the smokescale, rock gazelle are just too good. When doing casual open world stuff I still use my bear
I have all the Ranger pets-except those damned Hall of Monuments ones. Why are they even listed if you can't get them?
GW 1 is still up and running last I checked. And it's a different game, so if you get a litle burned out on GW2 try GW
only rangers can have pets?
By the games definition of "pets", yes. Necromancers have some undead minions, mesmers can summon clones of themselves, and engineers have turrets and a few other minor things tho.
