What I rigged up for a dial gauge is this , I took a piece of plywood and cut it 11/4 wide drilled a hole that the gauge fit tight in and its as long as the pulley is wide . I got 2 mini C clamps and shoot it through the holes in the pulley to the case half . I did not have the right shims and mine ended up at .0025 its kinda tight but it hasn't locked up .
You ever tryed running two or more if neccesary heat range plugs to get the burn more consistant from cylinder to cylinder...I might give it a try... It should be intresting.. I will make sure all same brand of course....

Never was a fan of breaking in engines. I just do the 20 minutes of cam break in then gradually give more and more fun pedal. I also use that 20 minutes to get carbs adjusted. I usually hit red line on 1st drive unless I feel tune is off. The rest of the time I'm only on the fun pedal after engine is completely warmed up and have never had a problem 😁
@@bomberobus Yeah old mechanic I knew from the 60s told me running engine for 20 minutes to break in cam is a waste of 20 minutes if you don't use that time to fine tune the engine. He also said the sooner you break in engine the less likely you will get blow- by and washout your bearings. He also stated every time you start a cold engine you run it like you are breaking it in till it's at operating temperature then enjoy. It has served me well for over 50 years. Back when I owned my 2 bugs a few of my friends had them also including my girlfriend who's my wife now. Bugs were everywhere and we used to play games in them like follow the leader. We drove them everywhere including through the woods. Most we did to them was mechanical cause they were fairly new and in good shape Back then. Building a naturally aspirated engine, VW's made you look like some kracker Jack mechanic . Unless doing some build that includes a turbo or a supercharger NOTHING is as satisfying as building a vw bug engine !
Was watching another video of yours. You were having issues with oil filled regulator. I bought and installed one and am trying troubleshoot why engine hiccups stalls as I get on it. At first regulator was showing 3psi, now I have nothing but still running. Real perplexing. Wondering if I have to jet, or just keep messing with carb to find sweet spot
Yeah the heat seems to really affect the oil filled gauges, so I took that gauge out once I had proper psi. I wonder if when you disconnected your fuel line to hook up a gauge if you got trash in your idle jet. But I don’t know, could be dirty jets, wrong jets, 009 flat spot, valve lash, timing….the list (and fun) goes on 😂
@@bomberobus haha list foes go on and on. Switched out a coil yesterday, took away stumbles hiccups on acceleration. Must have had weak spark. It's like a new ride today....way more responsive. Thanks for reply gives me new ideas
Great 👍😃 video thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm so happy 😁 that your new 1800 build is super strong and running very well. I agree your brother needed the yellow 🟡. Blessing and more blessings to you and your family in Jesus name Amen
😂 I built that engine in my kitchen. I never acquired a VW that didn’t have a rats nest in it. The last one almost landed on my chest when I was underneath the Bus, that’s when the name Rats Revenge was born LOL
@@bomberobus jaaaaa. So awesome. Never knew where the name came from. Makes a lot of sense now. I see that happen a lot with old cars. I had a possum living in my bug engine compartment for awhile. I need to get on that build eventually!
@@bomberobus true. I’ve owned for over 25 years. It deserves a pan off restoration. I’m getting close on the bus. Was thinking I might borrow the engine from the bug to put in the bus, just so I can drive it and then I can get started on the bug and all the other projects I have lined up. Jaaa. Not sure. I don’t wanna start piecing out the bug but we’ll see since that is gonna be a looong project with body work involved.😆
I heard that. I wish I was a good body man, but it’s a big dell just keeping them running proper so I’ll stick to that. I wish I could pan off all of them but it’s just not realistic right now. Your Bus is project is going great man I love that thing!
@@bomberobus You're right about UA-cam acting funny. I couldn't post any comments on any of the videos I watched yesterday for some reason. I taught I had a issue with my computer/phone. 😕 Glad to hear, I wasn't the only one who noticed it.
How you have those balls on the antennas back when they had the Taco Bell chihuahua i got a little one at the dollar store that was a bobble head one . I pulled off the head and filled it with red silicon and put it on mine . Gravity made it goop down and drip .It look like blood . People would see it and say OMG gross .
I remember that chihuahua but I didn’t have a VW back then! I could see where your custom bobble head might’ve grossed some people out 😂. Cool idea though

The ingenuity of VW owners never cease to amaze me. That’s a slick maneuver right there.🤔

I haven’t tried it but it does sound interesting. Be cool to hear how it works out if ever get to mess with it.
Good stuff!! Enjoying the content.
Thanks John I appreciate that 🤙🏼
Great vid
Looks like the engine build turned out really well
Thanks OTTO. I feel like it’s still breaking in but checks out ok for now.
I was wondering if you had a parts list for the 1800 that you would share so I can start gathering up parts ASAP. Thanks.
Hope this helps
AE case align bored 20 over
CB Performance forged 8 dowel flywheel
Mahle bearings (after silver line wouldn’t fit right)
AA forged 74mm stroker crank
AA 88mm thick wall 88 P&C’s
5.325 inch I-beam rods (this was the key to normal deck height without a bunch of cylinder shimming that widens the engine and can make it a tough fit for the car)
CB Performance 2241 Camshaft
Lifters? New of course can’t remember brand but came from CB
Empi GTV2 heads 40 x 35 valves - 58cc
Solid shaft rockers (used my stock rocker arms and stock push rods)
Dual Empi EPC 34 carbs
CSP bellcrank linkage
CB Performance 26mm Full flow oil pump to filter
Thin line 1 1/2 quart oil sump
CB Performance degrees pulley
Vented it from case to breather box via a ported fuel pump block off and also at the oil fill stand
8.1 to 1 compression ratio
43 thou deck height
And if I had the money, dual 40 carbs would send this car next level, but it does rip with the 34’s
Also….27mpg currently but I don’t baby it
I CANT thank you enough. I'll keep you posted on the progress.
@@BerzerkerGarage that’d be cool. I’d love to know how it goes.

Good point. Had to adjust the lash twice so far. Always kind of nervous about the geometry but seems to be settling in nice
