One year later with my fresh 1600 sp (W100 cam, light flywheel, straight cut gear, ported heads, home made side-tuck exhaust and home brewed SU carb induction (!) and I'm so happy with the performance. Nothing wrong an sp motor that's for sure. Thanks Mike I used several of your recommendations on this build including Cool=tins under the barrels.
I teach an aviation reciprocating engine theory and overhaul class. Really like watching your processes and explanations. Try to incorporate some of your engine build videos into my class since most General Aviation air cooled opposed engine 4 cylinders are just like the VW engines.
You can hear the difference, a nice "throaty" exhaust, and that single long induction tract a big benefit to low down torque. Made it a better daily driver.
This was an awesome idea for the engine Mike! I have a few engines sitting around that I can do this with, just takes time to get it all together. I'm glad that engine worked out for you, and it sounds great!
Way back when I was in college, my buddies and I built a Chevy small block motor. The bottom end was good, so we left it alone. A long duration, high lift cam, head with larger valves, headers, high rise dual plane intake with a Holley 650. We created a monster! The cam made all the difference in the world. With your VW build, I can hear the cam. The motor wants to rev! It also sounds beefy! I enjoyed watching your motor build. Some great tips for keeping the cost down, but doing it the right way. And the driving video is great to watch! Congrats on a great build.
These cars really get under your skin. My first car when I got my license in the late 70's was a stock '68 1500. I haven't had one since, but when most dream of someday owning a supercar, I dream of owning a Beetle built to my spec. At this point it will probably never happen, but videos like Mike's help to keep my dream alive.
I did single port with dual weber Ict carbs and 100 Engle cam 1600cc with 7.9 compression . Thought it would be a bad combination but it actually had more torque than prior dual port .
In 81 I fixed up my 67 with dual ports with closeratio 3rd gear ,aluminum flywheel with racing clutch .Dual Carson’s and 92mm with bigger valves in the heads .Kept breaking the cone off my Transaxle so I bought a kit the welded the axle to the so called frame haha .I won lots of money off V8 camaros back in the day .Wish I still had it
Mike, I’m a bit of a silent assassin - I’ve been watching your videos over here in England for a good while and not yet commented. Just wanted to say how much I enjoy them. Really interesting and informative. I’ve learnt a from watching them. Enjoy watching your test drives through the Californian countryside. Reminds me of a trip I did to So Cal ten years ago. Would love to come back. Keep up the good work. Ben 🇬🇧
Mike Fn Garage with today's masses, a single port would almost be enough for a weekender. But in order to save your rear end in traffic, duals all the way.. Long run I'm sure you'll get more bang for your buck with the duals, but the single ports are for holding up traffic in style 🙂
Thanks for all your videos to share your extensive knowledge on Air-Cooled VW's! How can you tell the final drive gearing, and is it easy to change? Do you have a video on that?
Great comparison. I have a 58 with a 36 hp that is either period correct or matching engine. Just isn't quite enough. I have a 1641 brand new long block that I am going to have built to drop in. I want to use stock gear and tranny (which I am not for sure of ratio) for mainly around town and country roads and very little interstate. Really want to use a single carb and probably pea shooter exhaust and keep the 36hp on a shelf. Your suggestions would be greatly valued.
the best is the 1699 thick wall to ad to that 1600. get the 88 thick wall cylinders and put 90.5 cut heads on it the AA big valve. pretty cheap to buy drop some cool tin on that and you will have some real hp May do this later with that engine to show the difference. 1641 is real thin wall cylinders. I dont run them
I think you can do it. the stock engines are the easiest to do then we will be powering this up as we find parts. This series will help anyone who just needs a running engine the cheapest way. then step it up slowly to something really pretty quick.
yea the old engine that was in this car I put in the Single cab. Pulls it nicely. Geared perfect for heavy weight with this powered up 40. I had the correct exhaust for the 40 and all the parts so it made the most sense. Love that SP 16 in this car OMG it scoots.
I've recently found a 66 Karmann Ghia and have been devouring your videos before I dive into this project. Thank you for all the fantastic information! Out of curiosity, is this engine still running? If so which one of your vehicles is it in? Again, thank you such indepth information.
I would fly cut the heads a bit to get the compression ratio to about 8 to 1 then pull the valves out port the head a bit like I did then put any performance carb on.
what was strange was back when they were new was some of them ran better than others . Larry got a 2cd hand one it was a 1600 `DP engine and it screamed . It would leave Jewburned in the dust. And Jewburner had a cheater cam .328 lift .? I am sure Larry had a stock .304 lift . It was all in the DP. To bad you did not have a hill that you could have done a MPH test. I screwed up ,Archie totaled his 75 out and wanted to sell me it for 400 bucks. It had AC. 28,000 miles.............
I hear they had a few different cam profiles on the stock engine. some did run better than others one of the guys I know used to drive them at the dealer and some were really fast some were doggy.
So a single port is better for torque? My dual port 1600 pulls my 71 bus like dog shit from a dead stop. New Empi 34pict with a CB Magnaspark at 30deg. In cold weather it's bucking...my next idea is to ream out the heat riser tube on intake or go one step fatter on the jet. I got lazy over the years with fuel injection cars....I keep telling myself this is the hobby and it's good brain exercise troubleshooting.
@@vdub9943 man that sucks gotta wait for the roads to clear and the salt to dry them out then off for a little putt. when you can without damaging the car.
Love your video's mike even though I am not mechanically inclined 😂. I have a 59 bug that my wife and I drive quite a bit. Whenever she drives it she literally floors it everywhere she goes, my mechanic says it doesn't hurt it a bit. We've had the little car for 20 years and have had several different 36 and 40 hp engine's in it. Just had it rebuilt and was kinda hoping for a second opinion. Any thoughts my friend?
if you can find a good core engine a 1600 or bigger would be a bit more fun. Lots of options but all depend on how much money you want to spend. If you want to make the 40hp engine run a bit better just need a set of 1385 jugs for it then also put a set of 1600 rockers on that. Gotta modify some stuff but not much to get the valve geometry right but then you wont be on the floor. but just above it.
@@thomasgary1219 probably not. Is it the original crash box with no syncro in first gear. if so you might want to change it otherwise it should be fine.
Mike Fn Garage It's not the original transmission, but its definitely the old crash box type transmission that has a cool wine, and won't go in 1st unless you are completely stopped.
your comments are greatly appreciated also please like or dislike other comments. this will help the video. thanks for watching.
I was like man that reminds me of Riverside. Duh because it is...

I think a lot of that is the cam and exhaust port mod. the combination of those makes it so strong out of the hole it rips.
This was an awesome idea for the engine Mike! I have a few engines sitting around that I can do this with, just takes time to get it all together. I'm glad that engine worked out for you, and it sounds great!
I'm putting together a similar spec SP motor. This test run vid is getting me excited. Looks like a great package.
The second engine really runs well. I love the colour combo on this bug. As you said, it's a great daily driver

I had a 67 baja with a 1600dp, 1.4 rockers, electronic ignition, custom exhaust and a weber progressive, that car moved so nice on and off the highway

Man this build came together fast. I need to get out in the garage and get busy! =) Sounds awesome man!
that would run great in that ghia. sport that sucker around town OMG it is just in that fun zone.
Very nice! Seems fine!!!
Nice and smooth. Just how it's suposse to be. Great job.
You can definitely tell straight off that engine has more torque, like a little kid waiting for the next video. 😂😂😂👍
heard more muffler on the fist one , meaty, the second sounded like a ghost all a sudden its growling.. nice
Nice! Yeah that budget 1600 SP is a runner fo sho! 👍
less than 200 with the pointless. and it is fun and fast.
Nice ride 👍
Kinda cold and wet here so it's nice to go out for a drive, thanks Mike.
i went from a 36hp to 1600 dual port , it was a big deal for me. So cool.

That 2nd engine got some uummmppphhhh! The first engine is def user friendly, less maintenance.
seriously right out of the hole it launches. just does not have that top end the dual ports have but dont really need it.

Love this comparison! Thanks for the video
I had a single port 1600 in my old 64 Kombi. It was great except on the steepest of hills needed third ...
i’ve had 1200 and 1600 beetles and while the difference is noticeable, i’m never in a hurry, and the stock 40 Hp is fine for me.
Nice I love that vw
Very Cool!! Love your videos!

we used to have a '63 ghia with a1385 i was surprised we dusted a buddy's 1303, that 1600 singleport would be a nice fit on a bus
Winter shoes and all that rain , Cali sounds terrible lol . Both motors sound healthy , I'll take whichever one u punt to the curb 👍

Maybe I should keep the 1600 single port that "ran when we pulled it out of the bus" ? basically the same engine...this sounds great....

You have me fired up to get my junk running again!
get er running it is too much fun. ha ha.
But isn't the 1600dp better for top end? Like freeway driving?
Man. Of course I now no longer own the set of oldskool Kadrons with the steel single port manifolds. I knew I want them some day. Bummer.
motor rips. it would love those carbs.
Mike, what do you think about running a Zenith NDIX 32 on the single port ?
that carb would work pretty good on that as long as its jetted correctly.
I would fly cut the heads a bit to get the compression ratio to about 8 to 1 then pull the valves out port the head a bit like I did then put any performance carb on.
Any updates on this motor mike? Still running it in a car?
yea that sucker rips. for a 16 single stock carb. would easily handle dual carbs.
