Coming up on 18 years of playing PR, having played squad since pre alpha. I think your analogy of PR being the small town vs big city SQUAD is the most accurate analogy of the two separate spaces I can think of.
Reinstalled pr a couple days ago, I always had a much easier time squad leading in pr compared to squad. Probably because the skill level is higher than your average squad lobby.
Offworld should combine all their games into one like how PR has modern and WW2 in one game. OWI could have us voting for the next round to be Beyond the Wire, Squad '44, Squad, or Starship Troopers. btw re CAS: in the v8 release notes they say about ATGM's "our main goal is to move these weapons away from being effective anti-aircraft weapons to open the door for more dedicated anti-air weapons in the future". I hope this means they're trying to get the attack helicopter back into the game.
Idea is cool, but not doable. Sure, it's all Unreal, but it wasn't developed together. There's no interchangability of assets. a Tree in Squad is a different tree than in Post Scriptum (now Squad 44). There's separate mechanics, separate damage models, hell- even separate UI layouts. It wouldn't just mean combining the games- it would mean mostly rewriting them all into the same standard. Doable, but heaaaavily time consuming and not worth the effort. It would essentially be an entirely different game, Squad 2 if you will 2. Disk space bloat. the level of detail that today's graphics require is simply incomparable. Even when merged and generally interchangable? Having period apropriate stuff for both world wars and modern setting would probably mean something in the 100+ GB realm. Would only make sense for a Squad successor. Something built from the ground up with that intent.
Post Scriptum and Beyond The Wire should have been DLC for Squad from the beginning but OWI was greedy and thought they could sell them separately at full price. They couldnt, and both games flopped hard and failed to retain playerbase. The Starship Troopers game is worse, because they just ripped off a free mod that was better.
Don't listen to them. I mainly SL now, and honestly it doesn't even feel like I'm really playing the game unless I SL. Mainly due to the fact as just a squad member, you have very little impact on winning or losing... but once you SL, you can easily single handedly win games for your team. It takes a certain personality type to effectively SL though. Make decisions, enforce your decisions, use your mic often, be friendly and easy going, but also be ruthless with the kick button for people refusing to work as a team. Oh, and don't be a dictator. Ask for reccomendations, ask what they think, take their advice sometimes. (Most SL's get this so wrong.)
Before even finishing the video, after playing Hell Let Loose today for 8 hours (free weekend) and also spending 12 hours in Squad in the past, but also having more than 200+ hours on PUBG and DayZ, I have to say my opinion that in games like these, the trend of having maximum possible graphics on a high tier end PC is ruining it for me - sure, my budget PC could have been a high-end machine also if I have had invested more, but comparing all these games together, I cannot help but feel like that visual quality is most needed distance-wise and also anti-aliasing wise - AKA the visual concrete foundation of such games is that I should be able to see what everyone else is seeing even on a potato PC - fuck nice effects and such, models, shadows, rendering all that should have a foundation in a performance low-budget range, like the engine itself imho in each of these games does not needs some fancy stuff, what I have found to be the MOST CRITICAL aspect of such games is imho sound design, where all of the sounds should be pitch-perfect in communication to each individual player. To summarize: for visual I do not need extra quality textures, I need fucking A-tier visibility of objects that is not hindered by performance, same goes for audio, which imho should be universal and the most fine-tuned aspect of any tactical shooter.
Absolutely agreed. I detect people with high end PCs by simply looking at scoreboard and their kills. Because my soapy picture is far from visualy-readable. But sound design is excelent in Squad.
@@Sebomai-b8i Are you even considering the fact that we are talking about multiple mod teams vs one dev team? No shit that together they can pump out more content than OWI. You literally don't know how game development works, there are so many assumptions in your one single comment. Like OWI has to split their time and resources managing/developing an entire game. While a mod team puts all their time and resources into just one specific thing.
Once i played PR for first time, i was 15-16 y.o at that time. Mine english was bad and i didn't had a mic but i remember i was playing on one server all the time. There was a one guy he was like 30-40 y.o and he took me with him so we were anti air. I remember we were also laser designating targets for CAS. There were 3 of us, That dude who was a leader of squad and another guy that was always in vehicle i remember it was Tunguska or Shilka not sure and there was me just spotting targets. I remember that i used to write in squad chat were are the targets and leader tells that to the 3rd guy and he would obliterate enemy soldiers. I also did laser for CAS and when first bomb fell to that place i felt like i have some use in this game. I was noob back then, neither im better now since i stopped playing it because my pc died but yeah, PR is such a masterpiece and its sad to see that there are not much servers anymore like back then. Squad looks good but in my opinion it doesen't have a soul like PR had, PR players are mostly some 30+ yo guys who probably served in afghan or somewhere else once random guy game me a advice for a life so i won't forget that experience. I hope you PR players are doing good and I hope we'll see each other again somewhere on the battlefield.
None is better than the other, however, PR is more relevant because it has older players and plays in an organized way (many are or were real military personnel) but in Squad this is not often seen, for the simple fact of having teenage players. and inexperienced in the way of organized play.
Squad really needs pilotable air assets like scout, attack, and heavy-lift helicopters along with fixed-wing aircraft (along with appropriate countermeasures like MANPADs, SPAAGs, AA emplacements at FOBs) to be on par with Project Reality. It would be nice to see more factions with the sniper role, the breacher class with shotguns, more SMGs (pilot and crewman roles).
@@indi8990 I would hate to lose all of the content that is currently in Squad, it’s taken 10 years to get here. Unless Squad 2 shipped with all of Squad 1’s content and features…
@@AdamNewell_ Agree. It's moreso a complain on stability/performance. I get 60-70 fps on a 3070 on some maps which affects aim and gameplay, im forced to play on low settings if I don't want to dip into the 50fps range.
Still praying everyday that attack helicopters are added to Squad at some point, not just CAS variants of the existing transport helicopters (though they should definitely exist as well), but full-blown attack helicopters; the AH-64D, Mi-28N, WZ-10, etc. Pilotable fixed-wing aircraft are desired as well, and they were promised in Squad’s Kickstarter, but let’s let OWI tackle attack helicopters before they move onto jets.
Project reality has a more veteran fan base that knows what they're doing compared to squad. That's why the teamwork is better even with the free to play moniker and possible noobs joining because its old.
One thing Squad ought to change are the damage values for vehicles. In PR I remember taking out lightly armored vehicles & trucks with a single RPG to the engine. In Squad, a logi truck can survive an RPG... the vehicles are just way too spongey
That whole section about the hook is too real. I love it so much but it seems a lot of people I've spoken too in squad hate the idea of the hook being add for various reasons/
with vehicles getting IR smoke and the Bfirst bradly coming in, im also hoping we get a armor overhaul to something similar like Squad 44's armor. Hoping these are just light updates paving the way for the bigger one.
We also need vehicles to have hard and soft kill APS against ATGMs. Realistic ERA would be nice on top of that. After that, we need to have anti-air defenses in the form of vehicles and MANPADS alongside attack helicopters and helicopter gunships. Adding those before AA defenses would be unbalanced.
i switched to squad, since my group of players fall appart. So i find a new group in squad, that has also the potential to get a big friendship. I started with squad in 2015, quit it there for a year or so and than i get addicted to the game for some years... And you get another point, i also miss the close air support. See you in Yeho, i am the guy who drives the gunner that hit your tracks ;)
I'm still praying that BF3: Reality Mod will eventually become good enough to attract some decent playerbase. I'm completely fed up with these newer tactical/pseudo-milsim shooters and their jank performance, generic Unreal Engine look and total lack of immersive tech such as environmental destruction. Battlefield 3 on the other hand looks amazing, runs on a toaster and allows you to blow nearly everything up. A "Project Reality" BF3 would make SQUAD utterly obsolete. But, unfortunately, the mod just doesn't have enough content to make people want to play it. It's still too much like vanilla BF3, and the complete lack of "marketing" on social media doesn't help either.
BF3:RM is dead in the water. It can't compete with the ammount of content in PR due to it's longevity and it can't compete with squad's updates due to it being made by volunteers. There is no incentive to play it for the average player, and without a core experienced playerbase it might as well not exist.
@@guidantyt Once they have that more solid base they should contact UA-camrs who made squad extra popular to begin with like karmakut, slorgs, moidog, nano etc to promote it again as if it just came out. @@guidantyt tbf I only knew about project reality and squad and what even a match in those look like thx to UA-camrs. Otherwise I'd have been stuck in modern battlefield hell with my only ropeline being rising storm 2 which is now dead.

i play on the latam server on pr, and you're absolutely right, it's like a small cozy town, it's really a nice experience cause the teams communicate better and you end building yourself a rep lol
PR at TG and at its height will forever be my best gaming moments. I've gone to other countries to see PR people as well as welcome internet strangers in my home. PR was and is a wonderful community, but squad is the future and where I will spend that gaming time.
You said that its unrealistic to use bipods while standing, though in fact you can fold in the bipods two legs together and that way get basically a vertical grip for bipod weapons.
Great video, slorgs. Loved the last scene! One comment: To my understanding, the PR update, which will hit our computers soon-ish, will feature a lot more content than WW2. From heresay I repeat without any hard data: WW2 will be the smaller part of it. The only thing I would have loved to hear is that it is quite astonishing that PR is still alive, and active, and very much gives you the chance to have a blast on the battlefield. Even on WW2 maps. It is just a slightly different kind of Pizza. Oh, and we are still hoping to get our 146 player event format.
The thing that keeps me from going back to squad, is what they did to the sound... Rare was the time when I could use my quad floor standing speakers to their potential, but boy did I relish it.. coming back when I actually had the time and computer to actually play the game, imagine my utter horror, finding that they had completely neutered what was probably some of the best sound design in any video game ever.
As a long time fan of Project Reality, it's undeniable how immersive and intense Squad gunplay is. I have never played a game, not even ArmA, that portrays shooting a firearm being so violent and intense (like you can almost feel the recoil and vibration due to the visual effects and low frequency audio). But it feels like it's missing something, something that PR has. I prettt much only play Squad now for the SquadOps One-Life events, outside of that, I never had quality matches with awesome teamwork from both sides in public matches unlike when playing PR.
In therms of functionality and military accurate stuff project reality still wins, squad has less content than pj, I mean it’s getting there but still doesn’t have what project reality has compared to it so it doesn’t have jets, cas and no tank thermals and more.
To say that PR would suddenly stop existing based on no interested devs is the most odd thing I ever heard anyone say about PR in all years and I played it since it only had 2 factions.
Yes. It is. 'Ate modern ballistic deviation 'Ate high FPS demand 'Ate demanding shaders Luv' me Project Reality Luv' me Mumble chat Luv' me low-quality graphics Simple as
It was to test the waters with the playerbase. Leaving it in made no sense for balance as it was only for the marines faction and it had no equivalent in any other faction.
You can get the "PR friends" experience in Squad too. You're comparing the experience of a seasoned player with a single server as it's home in a game with a playerbase of 200 on a good day to hopping on a random servers as a new player with less than a 1000 hours in a game with a daily pop of 15000. Sure, the ICO took a toll on the community, many experienced and skilled players left leaving an abysmal void of incompetence from the average player but there are still familiar faces around if you stick to one community you like.
Squad is just so fluent and fast for my paste, i like the clunkyness of PR. it just adds ups in a heated situation. And for the fact alone that everytime i open pr and hear the theme i get goosebumps. But nonetheless, squad is doing very well and most important it has most support. im just glad both communuties are alive and everyone can play what he wants enough talking, now its time to serve O7
I think a lot of people still don't know about Operation Harsh Doorstop, which is essentially the successor to Project Reality. IMO it has the momentum to go quite far. First of all it's free, it plays really well and the mod community is quite active.
The latest developers notes hint at dedicated AA units, and thereby it could be that they longterm add CAS. The biggest obstacle is that most maps are too small for that. PvP games being free is actually not a good idea as cheaters can just get a new account, where there is a financial hurdle in case of >30 bucks games. Squad was never arcade, but simcade. It went from being on the arcade side of simcade to the sim side of simcade, but is still clearly not sim. ICO has some super unrealistic stuff like blurring screen when being shot at, which are 100% not realistic.
Squad's shooting mechanics were never unrealistic per se(aside from QE spamming), they allowed for skill expression and a greater learning ceiling. The ICO's intent was levelling the field and it both acheived and failed catastrophically at it. As for the CAS a solution could be to extend the current map area leaving it low poly and with the current invisible walls and kill barriers for everyone but the aircraft, like PR does. The airfield for CAS would be outside the map as well.
I have to argue one point! I typically play squad on the same server (TPF2) and it feels like a pretty tight knit group, you can jump on at any time and it seems like about half the players are regulars that are always in the game, kind of like you explained with PR. Squad has that too, server dependent!
I remember the old days with PR. Back when you could reliably join decent infantry squads every round. I want to go back to the 2000s. the 2020 are not good for me. take me back.
Since the incredible ico. I can't say one is better now than the other, They are different experiences now to me. Like squad 44 vs hell let loose Helldivers vs starship troopers Zero hour or Ready or not Different. One clearly is more polished and or larger funding. PR is the old, janky, beloved car that if someone new comes along, struggles to get onto the highway, but you can straight up straight street race like a pro with Squad is the shinning newest sexy car where everyone can drive it after a while, but it feels less...special somehow, but feels somehow more..satisfying because you have a nice clean hd view outside.
Take that PR 600 player base and only allow that PR community to play on say 5 or 6 serves is the single best First person Experience I think you could ever have. I.e no one else but the PR vets on those servers. The PR community as you said is the best group of players iv every played with. do that and the Squad unlocks its full potential. As you said some time the best time is sitting in that bathroom watching that vent (if you know you know), because SL told you todo so. Sometimes it turns it a point less wait, other times its single most intense firefight experience in PR as you know what's at stake if they get in.
Last time I played squad was before it had tanks, helicopters or basically anything other than basic vehicles and infantry, but even then it felt good for the "hop in and just play" style. Maybe it's not hardcore mil-sim, but very close. Edit: Checked steam. Last played: Jul 13, 2017. WTF? It feels like I played it just a few years ago, what the hell is wrong with time.
The thing that bugs me the most about FPS comparisons is when it come to clearer graphics, why would you cheer for a muddied version, especially as a adult. I might be weird but if I have to squint, it physically hurts while staring at the screen
It’s the first time in my life that I hear about project reality Tbh I like Squad quite a lot, I live in LATAM, so the amount of servers that have good ping and don’t speak Portuguese are few, I think that there is only one lol. And in this server TW is constantly present and solo player are quickly remove from the server, mainly because Squad isn’t a solo player game and we try to “keep it “ that way
My Squad/Reforger friends get tired of me telling them how great PR was/is. I haven't played in a long time, but PR will always have a special place in Milsim for me.
I feel like project reality wins in variety and diversity in maps and factions, you can be in iraq, vietnam, chechnya, china etc etc... Whilst in squad its very limited compared to PR, I find that both games have issues in terms of graphics (PR low graphics, Squad poor optimization) and gunplay (PR HitReg terrible and sights do not align with hits, Squad noodle arms). But I do think Squad could become an improved PR if they focused more on optimization and bug fixes first, then started adding stuff.

btw re CAS: in the v8 release notes they say about ATGM's "our main goal is to move these weapons away from being effective anti-aircraft weapons to open the door for more dedicated anti-air weapons in the future". I hope this means they're trying to get the attack helicopter back into the game.
Cool idea. As long as they DON'T inflate my ssd. Not like those buggers at Activision.
@@Hinokassaudifan1 Well it's Unreal Engine, so should end up getting bloated anyways
It would essentially be an entirely different game, Squad 2 if you will
@@Sebomai-b8i post scriptum and beyond the wire werent made by owi, they just licensed the squad framework to 3rd party devs
Lovely squad. Once I finish work next week, I'm dedicating my weekend to play as a squad leader.

@@cringeenjoyer2037 yah not fun
@@cringeenjoyer2037Lol true
Being a SL is fun so yea
Too many imho, cut that out
I am just impressed with the continuous development of Squad i feel like there is always new content coming out, even if sometimes small.
What? Squad's content stream has been a joke for years. The modders put out content of equal quality at 3x the rate, OWI is extremely lazy.
None is better than the other, however, PR is more relevant because it has older players and plays in an organized way (many are or were real military personnel) but in Squad this is not often seen, for the simple fact of having teenage players. and inexperienced in the way of organized play.
too bad PR cant be ported to steam
@@jmgonzales7701 i dont see this being an issue anyway

Squad really needs pilotable air assets like scout, attack, and heavy-lift helicopters along with fixed-wing aircraft (along with appropriate countermeasures like MANPADs, SPAAGs, AA emplacements at FOBs) to be on par with Project Reality.
It would be nice to see more factions with the sniper role, the breacher class with shotguns, more SMGs (pilot and crewman roles).

In Squad, a logi truck can survive an RPG... the vehicles are just way too spongey
also tanks can be onseshotted with single atgm to the back/side
I do recall, paying for CAS in the kickstarter and here we are...10 years later
Just give us CAS and fix the goddam driving physics and this game would be 10x better, yes not PR level sadly but way better than it is now.

The coolest kit in either game. On an insurgency map it's the coolest kit in any game.
Squad is getting laser designation possible soon, they’re adding the Bfist Bradly (the laser designator without the tow)
with vehicles getting IR smoke and the Bfirst bradly coming in, im also hoping we get a armor overhaul to something similar like Squad 44's armor.
@@guidantyt
Once they have that more solid base they should contact UA-camrs who made squad extra popular to begin with like karmakut, slorgs, moidog, nano etc to promote it again as if it just came out.

It still is, in a way. You will still find amazing games on the right server and time.
I really like that big city vs. small town analogy, you hit it right on the head.
The big city small city comparison is so real, only yesterday did I join a squad match and have a dude remember me for getting two tank kills back to back. I have 470 hours in squad and that was a first
470 hours is really not a lot, in Squad terms at least.

Sometimes I have the impression that Squad was initially created as a arcade shooter to get money and maintain PR alive.

Slorgs, are you the narrator of the Ahoy channel? You sound a lot like that guy.
I'd never heard of the dude until now, I do sound a bit like him to be fair, but he definitely sounds older and more sexy than me
I still remember the countless times I was smashed into a beef pie by supply boxes dropped from the heli
Yes PR is still currently better than squad
only thing lacking is graphics and physics. Too bad it couldn't be ported to steam.
No it’s not. Janky ass game 🤮
That change at the end with the helis from each game hit home!
the beyond the wire part hurt.... god i loved that game
Cant seem to get into Squad, while it could be fun at times i think the enormous maps make it boring for me.
In therms of functionality and military accurate stuff project reality still wins, squad has less content than pj, I mean it’s getting there but still doesn’t have what project reality has compared to it so it doesn’t have jets, cas and no tank thermals and more.
3 games i play in one video. Noice
To say that PR would suddenly stop existing based on no interested devs is the most odd thing I ever heard anyone say about PR in all years and I played it since it only had 2 factions.

It was to test the waters with the playerbase. Leaving it in made no sense for balance as it was only for the marines faction and it had no equivalent in any other faction.
Grappling hook was released in bf2 special forces expansion pack though

But nonetheless, squad is doing very well and most important it has most support.
im just glad both communuties are alive and everyone can play what he wants
enough talking, now its time to serve O7
It saddens me every time I ask in squad “you guys no about project reality” and they say “no” :,(
I think a lot of people still don't know about Operation Harsh Doorstop, which is essentially the successor to Project Reality. IMO it has the momentum to go quite far. First of all it's free, it plays really well and the mod community is quite active.
Great video , i really liked the comparison with small town
PR always feal like home to me as well after all those years even with its "rough" view
I just wish it could have been ported to steam
Loved this coming of age story, good luck in the big city Slorgs!
The grappling hook was vanilla BF2 or rather it was added for BF2 special forces
fuck me I didn't need to feel nostalgic for PR, that shit was my childhood
I remember the old days with PR. Back when you could reliably join decent infantry squads every round. I want to go back to the 2000s. the 2020 are not good for me. take me back.

PR IS Obviously BETTER THAN SQUAD
I just appreciate a game that doesn't halve my frames-per-second when i aim down a scope.
Since the incredible ico. I can't say one is better now than the other,
They are different experiences now to me.
Like squad 44 vs hell let loose
Helldivers vs starship troopers
Zero hour or Ready or not
Different. One clearly is more polished and or larger funding.
PR is the old, janky, beloved car that if someone new comes along, struggles to get onto the highway, but you can straight up straight street race like a pro with
Squad is the shinning newest sexy car where everyone can drive it after a while, but it feels less...special somehow, but feels somehow more..satisfying because you have a nice clean hd view outside.
Having no CAS is why I'm hesitant about getting squad.
yes what made pr good was the core gameplay mechanics like spawning habs fobs etc
In other words, "Life is Life and everything change"
I dont know what bluedrake is talking about. PR has more active players in it by source in their website stats.
Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Absolutely
It’s the first time in my life that I hear about project reality
Tbh I like Squad quite a lot, I live in LATAM, so the amount of servers that have good ping and don’t speak Portuguese are few, I think that there is only one lol. And in this server TW is constantly present and solo player are quickly remove from the server, mainly because Squad isn’t a solo player game and we try to “keep it “ that way
Yes! Mainly because of content quantity.
