No Russian is far more important to the plot given is, quite literally, the only terrorist act we SEE Makarov commit in MW2. Films have a rule that says "Show, Don't Tell." Video Games should have a rule that says "Play, Don't Tell." By putting us in the shoes of Joseph Allen, a soldier who by Shepherd's orders had to go along with the No Russian incident, we the player are placed in a scenario similar to him. We're just following orders. And thus the moment Makarov kills Allen serves as a genuinely shocking and sad moment. We think "we did all that... Just to die." Its a very powerful scene. Secondly, because its the only act of terrorism we witness, this makes Makarov a much bigger threat than if we had heard about it through dialogue and helps us become invested in the story. I could go on talking about its thematic significance within MW2 but i think this is enough to explain why this mission is important. Btw, love the videos Act Man.

You didn't even mention the button in the museum that brought all of the NPCs to life? That was one of my favorite things to do back in the day on MW2.
What I love the most about COD MW2 is the insane variety of scenarios. Rather than urban/woodlands/beach/_somewhere in Russia_ environments as it was staple for... every shooter until then, on MW2 you play in the frozen desert, African jungles, airports, oil rigs, airplane boneyards, countryside villas, and a fucking WAR TORN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
word. I had a FPS party at my house. We played this and killzone 2 (which is excellent too btw) but everything is either grey or brown industrial environements. MW2 had huge variety. Killzone destroys it from a rendering engineering standpoint but modern warfare 2's variety was way better. More modes , better multiplayer , just all around great variety
@Son Gohan it's still in there, just very masked by the sound of the game. It's on UA-cam though if you just look up the missions name and radio chatter
I haven't watched the video yet, but the best thing about it was how you could go from loading the disc to searching for a multiplayer match in like 15 seconds. The only game that let you button mash you're way past the billion studio logos at the beginning and set whether you defaulted to single player or multiplayer
it wasn't Activision who made the game, but Ifinity Ward. And if everyone just had a brief look a the credits at the end of the game, everyone would know that the creater of the original CODs and Modern Wafare series (West and Zampela) where fiered by shithead Kotick 6 weeks after MW2 realesed. Why has COD became so miserable? Here you have your answer. Why did a have 3 years of shitty jetpacks ? Because West and Zampela (and all the original devs) where fired and wanted to creat a new inovative game (Titanfall) and so shithead Kotick just had to saturate the market with a pale version of it.
Paradox2o9 nah I enjoyed every cod till the end of bo2 and then idkw my love came back with ww2 but lost it right again with bo4😂 I like the new mw so far..
@@Paradox2o9 i kinda agree with you there. Even though Bo was fun and i had friends still playing it right after mw2/3 died out, it wasnt the same. In its peak 2009-2011 it was absolutely all mw2-mw3 man. I remember the changes to sniping and overall speed of the gun fights from modern warfare to the black ops series is what made my friends slowly drift away. then when ghost and Aw came out, most of us had already grew out of Cod, due to the repetitiveness.
10:12 Funny you mention that, in one of the newspaper clippings in the Makarov Safehouse level says that the Russian Government accepted that Makarov carried out the attack, but it also says that the US had armed and supplied him. The major point in the whole incident was not whether Makarov had been involved in the attack, but whether the US had been supporting it, which, from the weaponry used by Makarov & his crew, serves as evidence. Allen being apart of the attack was just the icing on the cake, and a very lucky opportunity for Makarov to use his corpse as more evidence to the Russian government.
Yep and especially when the ultra nationalist party have been elected since the end of COD4 and all the russians people hates americans and idolize Zakhaev.
@@TheActMan I will agree with that point, it was explained a bit poorly. I guess it's just one of those things you have to do a bit of digging to figure out. Also, holy shit I actually got a reply from the man himself.
+The Act Man Hell, Makarov is literally introduced by Shepherd as “trading blood for money” but I mean that’s not true, he’s not in it for the money, he’s in it for the Ultranationalist cause. So why does Shepherd say this? It’s because he’s setting Makarov up to just be a gun for hire, so when the russian authorities find his involvement, he could just say he was paid to do it.
Everybody talks about No Russian but I'm over here praising how perfectly chilling and executed the Washington D.C. trilogy was, like seriously who remembers exiting the underground bunker to the heart of the USA in literal flames, even more so accompanied by the cue of the theme? Such a god damn powerful moment and although I didn't understand the impact at the time, I'm thankful that I played the classic COD games when growing up.
Its sooo fucking good to see someone giving the DC Trilogy the praise it deserves. It felt like I'm the only one who truly appreciated how amazing those missions were. Whiskey Hotel is my favorite cod mission of all time
@@starpaladinnelaj The music while trying to force your way through to the rooftop is just spine chilling. It really captures the feeling of desperation while racing against time.
@@starpaladinnelaj Whiskey Hotel was great. I really loved that last minute countdown race to the top of the roof to light the flares and prevent the air strike. Of their Own Accord had an amazing opening cutscene with the emergency broadcast coupled with leaving the bunker for the first time and seeing the warzone that was DC, not to mention that desperate last stand at the end of the mission. All in all however, I think Second Sun might be my favorite for the DC chapter. Following the detonation of the nuke (which getting to view that interactive cutscene in space was mind blowing to me as a kid) and just how dark, silent and hopeless the situation had seemed during the EMP was truly captivating in my mind. All in all, they were all great missions
i still remember crying at the ripe age of 12, the first campaign I ever played and it still hits me whenever I rewatch it. Ghost was always saving you just for that ending, it was good but damn the feels hurt. same with soaps death in mw3
one of my favorite things about the COD MW series is that they actually show you who the protagonists and antagonists are based on their colored subtitles. For example, you can tell who the protagonists and good guys because they have the green color. But in Black ops 3, all of the character's subtitles are red
Plasma Dragoon are you fucking stupid. Self-censorship is a thing. It’s when you don’t do or say something cause you think it will offend even if it’s worth it. Heck totalitarian dictatorships use it. Why spend so much money on attempting to censor speech when you can get people to censor themselves?
It's not like potential shooters play video games anyways. It's just the scapegoat the media uses to protect themselves from the fact that they perpetuate the cycle of violence themselves by making the shooter a celebrity like they're the new Charles Manson. And now we're so desensitized from domestic terrorism because of CNN, FOX and MSNBC playing it on loop 24/7. And of course they won't admit that these violent video games are the tag, pick-up basketball, and soda shop social of the 21st century and that they're really just waiting for the next school shooting to milk the watch time and get their pay from corporations putting ads on their networks, and politicians trying to push their agendas saying they can stop these tragedies.
Wish they remaster this one and world at war, or atleast fix the nodding issues (never going to happen) these cods are still better then all the other new junk that is out.
I honestly think the EMP was probably the best part of the campaign, it felt like it hearkened back to WaW by focusing on an atmosphere and the movement and care that the soldiers have to take, rather than just being in full chaotic battles
That's my fav mission too, but it was actually a nuke. There's a case in real life where a similar thing happened with a nuke and it had the effects of an EMP for several hours/days
This soundtrack was one of my all-time favorite video game OSTs ever. The emotion in the music was so amazing. I wish other cods would follow up on it. NOT just having a killer multiplayer theme like BO4 (God Bo4s theme is amazing)
My buddy who’s never played the campaign told me he thought the mission title “No Russian” was entirely symbolic because Makarov already knows you’re an American. In the remastered campaign, the whole crew is even death-staring you before the elevator opens. 🤯 And I thought it was just cause it’s a cool sounding command, like Order 66
Makarov did know thr CIA guy was American. However he meant no speaking russian so people think it was Americans attacking (hence why he shoots your character and leaves him there at the end)
Facts brother. This game had amazing details with sound being one of them. The soundtrack always gives me chills. Great game. They should release a reskinned 4K version of this and watch the millions pour in.
RELEVANT they should reskin the whole game instead of waiting to release the multiplayer till a later date. What I’m scared of though is that Infinity Ward will kill the flow of the game by balancing things and adding unnecessary shit
Dude, when the whole emergency broadcast thing came on I got my mom so good.... lmao. I yelled "mom! mom! What is this?!?!" She read the fake broadcast out loud and is like " oh my God", and then the game resumes. She was pissed lmao.
Joonas Penttilä - The Act Man making an MW2 video, finding a comment from Star Wars, and seeing someone rejoice, as they find these things as well, makes me happy.
For me, the MW2 is the absolute peak of CoD art direction. Everything is so saturated and colorful, and the HUD is this great neon line-work. By far the best-looking game of the series.
Anyone else f***ing love spec ops. Something about all the very different missions was just amazing. There were some levels where you could only use a suppressed sniper to kill a ton of groups of people. You could take their guns and be really loud and get rushed by about 50 npc’s or sneak through it and try to kill them as fast as possible. Most missions were very unique and had interesting mechanics just like that
I used to play Spec-Ops with my dad and when we finally three starred Estate Takedown, it was a real celebration. Favorite one would be a tie between Hidden and Wetwork, though Sniper Fi and Suspension where really memorable. Damn, this makes me really wanna boot up my PS3 now.
I miss my mw2 crew back on ps3 those guys got me through a lot I hope every single one of them are alive and well and getting what they want out of life its the least they deserve ❤️ 🙏
yeah when i really try and ask myself "why does mw2 maps ,guns, sounds, and killstreaks,(pretty much everything you said), feel so much better then when i play bo4? It was just the aesthetic all along and maybe some nostalgia too
This game is a diamond of time. Every aspect i've seen being recaped in you video is pure gold. The scope to full scope time, the consistent recoil. The not overloadet maps with a clear spawn system. The perks that made sense. RIP MW2 and RIP to all hopes that there will be another COD like you!!!!!!!!!
I remember deadass writing a 5 paragraph essay about why my Mom should let me play Modern Warfare 2 and why the No Russian mission was good, and how it was art, and art is meant to provoke an emotional response, and not always a pleasant or happy one. Sometimes, art is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable. I got that game the next day.
The fact that CoD included No Russian in the game shows how much the world has changed on 10 years. That mission would never happen today given all that has happened since 2009.
It could happen today and there would actually be far less controversy. There was so much at the time that they had to add the option to disable it in game. It would be pretty cliche today but back then it was shocking.
The first time the nuke ever went off it was insane to me. The fact you can just say fuck it and kill everyone by getting an insane kill streak it blew my mind back then. The first time I ever heard the count down I literally panicked so hard thinking I had to survive somehow lmao. Emergency carepackages is the best damn perk in COD
Agent James OOF I’m pretty sure you misread me somehow but go watch a play through of the mission. If you stay with the DSM/ with Scarecrow then Ozone says he’s been hit and his comms go to static or vice versa with staying next to Ozone. Whichever doesn’t die in the house dies in the field before you get to Shepherd.
At 14 years old it was tragic. Then as I played it again recently after it’s remaster I realized I was sad over a character that wasn’t really significant. Ghost was really just a background character with a cool name and mask and nothing more.
You hit the nail on the head with map design. The reason MW2 never got stale to me was because every map played different. You could go from high action high pace in something like scrapyard to more drawn out slow play being a sniper in wasteland. The newer games just don't hold my attention because all the maps feel the same. I did go back and play COD4 when I was older, and it is definitely a great game, but MW2 will always be my favorite.
One of the most fun Call of Duty games of all time, it was just so perfect. The noobtubes, the quick scoping, the weapons, the lobby chat, stopping power, the campaign, multiplayer. It’s just so nostalgic. In fact, I still play it in these days, I don’t really run into hacked lobbies. Anyway, everything about it was just fun. Because at the end of the day, it’s about fun, right? And that’s why it’s one of the best call of duty’s of all time. You never knew the last time you hopped on with the boys or just by yourself online. It’s sad to say goodbye to these old cods. MW2 was simply legendary, period.
Agreed i still remember calling in sick to work and using the 7 days self certification and then binging on mw2 search and destroy, no sleep no breaks just all day all night owning everything and everyone
Makes you appreciate video games while they’re here. Currently been playing warzone with friends and even now it’s tough because I know someday we all just wont get online anymore. Who knows when our last session together will be?
@@Gruntvc It actually reminded me of the lynching part of the same game, mostly because I didn't even realize I could just do warning shots to disperse the crowd. It was not after I beat the game and went to read about it that I realized I didn't even try to shoot at a wall or the ground or something just to scare them... It really puts a perspective on things.
I recently played this with my friend, and they complained about it a lot. They said the guns were too powerful (I was using an intervention) and that it was too slow overall. They said the BO4 multiplayer was better. What a fuckin' time to be alive...
@@Longshot88 I get their criticism when the weapons are too powerful, you can easily get killed from nowhere without having the time to react, it's frustrating as hell. adding that to the fact you have little mobility, and you have a cod multiplayer in which camping is the best thing to do
@@Longshot88 actually, you're right at some point like, you can run pretty fast with a sniper riffle or a lmg but when you look at the cod games like AW, or BO3 (didn't play other more recent cod games) it isn't on the same level of mobility
That sniper rifle sound is so overused. It's stuck in my head now. Thanks, Act Man. Edit: I really want Act Man to review CSGO (if he can get past his problems with the gambling), so he can learn about map design for competitive play, or he can review Warframe because of its value as a free 2 play game. CSGO is also now free 2 play as well
God i miss this game, just the thought of coming on just needing to level up to unlock stuff and have fun. Russian government 'did no research' because it was extremely jingoistic and was eager to avenge Americans for MW1 events. And Makarov was working for the higher-ups. It's obvious.
I didn’t think the story was that dumb. Russians invade USA in MW2 since there was an American spy on the scene at the airport. To me it makes the Russians believe that Makarov was working for the Americans/Shepherd. Makarov also did a lot more terrorist attacks prior to the airport. That would of swayed the Russian public and government to war. (I haven’t looked into the lore for a while, but correct me if I got this wrong).

Right?? Compare that to freaking bo4. Ooo grand heist is in season; god, they need to die already.
_somewhere in Russia_ killed me .
That part in DDC was one of the best parts of the series with just how tense and brutal it was.

Right. They used NATO weapons on purpose.
Well shit, that makes a lot more sense. Still, that should've been slightly more explained in a cutscene or something
_Wolverines_ is and will be the most impacting mission on me in every game that I ever played.
Its sooo fucking good to see someone giving the DC Trilogy the praise it deserves. It felt like I'm the only one who truly appreciated how amazing those missions were. Whiskey Hotel is my favorite cod mission of all time

All in all, they were all great missions

one of my favorite things about the COD MW series is that they actually show you who the protagonists and antagonists are based on their colored subtitles. For example, you can tell who the protagonists and good guys because they have the green color. But in Black ops 3, all of the character's subtitles are red
Yeah, it's a trait of the old games that died down later. I really liked it.
Not just Black ops 3, every Treyarch game
The green titles are only in Infinity Ward games
Treyarch is lazy
If 2019 does give us a Modern Warfare 2 Remaster, I hope they don't cut the, "No Russian" level. Way too much censorship going on lately.
Genome Soldat they actually postponed the remaster because of the shootings in Florida and all over the place
They don't want to be responsible for future more mass shootings, if they did remastered it they probably cut that out

While this means the games may not be extremely competitive viable imo a party game can be so damn important. I can't think of any other fps like halo and MW2 that's just batshit crazy fun party game
ive feelt like this for years and years trying to balance everything takes the fun out of non-professional gaming.

CoD never used to care about appealing to the public eye, now they do whatever they can suck money out of people and “try” to appeal to everyone 🤦♂️
Seems like they try to make the feminist happy by forcing women and blacks into ww2, even though it makes no sense
EA is causing DICE to be the same way 😭
Gray Mason at this time thay had damn good writers for modern warfare now its there’s writers can only attempt to try something thay only hope to achieve a far reach ide have to say

The folks working on the ‘new’ modern warfare 2 should watch this.
Absolutely spot on with every detail. Explains what made this game soo enjoyable compared to
The rest and why it was a fan favourite.

Downloaded MW2 the other day. The multilayer is still going and man it's fun.
Mw2 released in that window in time where i feel gaming was at its height. So many good games released around this time, and we had the Xbox360 to.
I miss it and im glad i took part.
gaming was at its height and it was an icon for the millennial generation. a whole generation of dudes cherished on this game lol. games don't fill that void anymore or feel the same because we have all grown up, and life has moved on. will always remember this game fondly.
The toxic lobbies are what made multiplayer so great in my opinion
ateb3 it was funny for a while but just got old hearing the same insults constantly. The new modern warfare is bringing the toxic lobbies back but it’s extra gay.

Russian government 'did no research' because it was extremely jingoistic and was eager to avenge Americans for MW1 events. And Makarov was working for the higher-ups. It's obvious.
@Zyme Precisely. False flag attack. That's why Russian govt didn't arrest them. Or anyone believes a simple sham ambulance tricked them?
Then Russians got rekt
I didn’t think the story was that dumb. Russians invade USA in MW2 since there was an American spy on the scene at the airport. To me it makes the Russians believe that Makarov was working for the Americans/Shepherd. Makarov also did a lot more terrorist attacks prior to the airport. That would of swayed the Russian public and government to war. (I haven’t looked into the lore for a while, but correct me if I got this wrong).
@@ForgetfulFoot Makrov's terrorist attacks were mainly aimed towards the west so the US joining forces with someone that hates their guts just to carry out a terrorist attack is just retarded. There is also the fact that two other members of Makarovs team were killed by FSB as they fought towards extraction, were they Americans as well?
Yeah, and Allen was set up by Shepherd.

The best call of duty and game of all time no debate, no other game will compare to the fun you had playing MW2
MW2's multiplayer followed a simple, tried and true philosophy:
.
*_If everything is broken, nothing is imbalanced._*
this is what ive always said, the game was so unbalanced, it was actully balanced, its a weird situation.
and it shows how good of a game it was when all this time laters i can remember things like the dot on the red dot for the fal been off, putting the holo on the m16 tightened its burst, hell the other carepackage vault glitch for unlimited carepackage, the groundwar size FFA on rust, when you could glitch the lobbies out, the tar and f2000 having unique red dots
Fucking A. The guns were so op but so fun to use. TAR 21 for days
That's what I've been saying, everything is so unbalanced that everything is balanced, it's amazing really, I don't think I ever played another game that pulled that off.
I have to add I think cod 4 and mw2 are the best cod games made over all
In my memory they are the most fun cods made I can’t even play this new crap
Yeah but like, half the shit in the game was actually broken not everything
Best mission ever: Wolverines!! Will never forget this line: "Ramirez, get your ass to the burger town now!!!" I think that's how it went. Correct me if I'm wrong

*RAMIERZ! THROW SMOKE SO WE CAN GET AROUND THAT BTR!!*

"RAMIREZ, LAST MAG MAKE IT COUNT!" the only time i wasnt annoyed by sgt foley

Gnaeus what did he say
+Saeed Alghufli "You know what they say about revenge...you better be ready to dig two graves... Go ahead and end it. It won't change anything. Hmph. I knew you couldn't do it... You're a good warrior... but you could never take that extra step... to do what was absolutely necessary.)"
