I just finished RE2 remake with RT, on Series X. It was fantastic! I didn’t notice any frame rate issues. Really showed it as I’d forgotten most of the story.
Impressive what they did with Serie S. Ray tracing, 120fps and 60fps all with a 1440p resolution must not have been easy. In 2 years of console Capcom was probably the first one who achieved this.
It’s dropping to 75 FPS on 120 FPS mode. And like 30 on Ray tracing mode. How is that “impressive” simply because they put out modes way too powerful for it to handle?? VRR is the only thing even close to making it okay..

These seem like “future proof” modes. When these games runs back compat on future hardware, we will be very happy that these modes with higher fps targets exist
Definitely, Series X albeit powerful is suffering enough because of Xbox One S inept hardware, many native One S games or non optimized One X & S|X only running at 900p like MGSV
Just give us 3 mode: RT mode(RT, 30fps) NonRT mode(no RT, 60fps) Manual mode(RT:on/off, frame rate cap:30/60/120, resolution cap:4k/2k). Normal users have 2 preset mode. Advanced users can play around the setting and find their best one. Future consoles can take full advantage on the manual.

I don't understand why Capcom loves flying so close to the Sun. Targeting 2160p with RT at 60fps is not possible on console. I would gladly play the game at 1440p or even 1080p with RT at 60fps. Even 1st party developers haven't been able to do RTGI and RT reflections at 60fps, RE Engine is so extremely capable and impressive yet they keep handicapping it with 4K targets.
Only played RE2 with ray tracing. Game already looked great but the RT definitely made it much prettier in some areas. The main spots where I had FPS drop off are big areas like the police station lobby and the lab/plant area.

I haven't played through 2 yet, but 3 still has those issues. Unless you turn on ray tracing mode. The weird grainy reflections go away. But you sacrifice performance.
No reflections in mirrors but in RE2 you can see raytraced reflections in computer monitor screens. One example is near the end of the game in Umbrella's lab, inside of the room where you take Sherry to lie down. Check it out.

Add video editing and DF Direct recording on top of that, it easily gets into working overtime territory. I will say, comparing the console version with my PC that was about double the price. These next gen consoles are actually a really big bang for the buck. Despite some criticisms. Paying 400-500 for a machine that can do all this is really good. I'll even give props to the series S. Sure it's not the best quality but for 299.99 it does alot of the price
They sell software for profit, not the hardware, so yes you get a lot of hardware for your money. Though you are still getting inferior image quality with the checkerboaring.
i get the sentimemt but in this game both consoles are contending with 2060 level of performance. a $350 GPU from Jan 2019. if you can get a console for msrp, both are a good deal for an acceptable level of perf., however if paying $800 aka street prices, I'd add a bit more and get a decent PC.
Same love my c1 nothing choppy over here if it is for anyone u don't have to play in game mode adjust motion to 1 and juddeer to 1 and that will go away
Yeah I feel if they just drop the resolution a little bit on the ray tracing modes it will be much closer to that 60fps target. I would certainly rather give up a few more pixels to get smooth performance and ray tracing(and if you want the full 4K and 60fps, non raytracing would be available).

Both are better than your budget rig 1080p 75fps with no RT, which i'm sure cost more than $499
Just played through RE2 with Ray Tracing on Series X and it was a great experience. An already beautiful game even better. Not a locked 60 but more than playable.
Frames drop too low even for vrr. Would be nice to see a 1440p native or upscale mode to hit locked 60. Just makes me want to update my pc to have more control of how the settings are optimised, 4k is just not as important as frames are to me.
Yeah I did the same on PS5. The framerate was mostly good for me. The only real problem area was the large open lobby section of the police station. It gets quite rough there but everywhere else was pretty solid (in my opinion).
This game is making a compelling case for PRO consoles. They ask developers to put ray tracing features to underpowered consoles and this is the result.
Very generous of Capcom, I must say. Appreciated! Gave them all a spin after the update (on PS5) and they’re a fantastic experience with RT and VRR. RE3 comes out on top for me for visual splendour and performance. Still unconvinced by RT reflections. They’re nice but don’t add much to the experience that high quality SSR doesn’t already do.
@@Punisher6791 That’s not really because of RT, though. The previous versions had terrible SSR/cube maps. If they’d replaced them with high quality SSR we’d be just as happy. The RT GI is nice, though :)
@@divinitymode9364 How is it not because of RT? The RE Engine has horrible SSR no matter what game or platform you play on. RT is an easy "cheat" for them, and the results speak for themselves. Massive improvement.
Capcom needs to patch-in dedicated VRR support (not 'passive') for the PS5 version to properly hit designated targets. We can clearly see - looking at Insomniac's treatment - that a dedicated VRR update with smart parameters for frame-rate compensation really does a fine job.
Series X ray tracing with VRR is a pretty stable experience. I still however don’t feel like RT is ever worth the performance hit. I will always advocate for locked framerates, even if that means a locked 30. Fluctuating framerates kill any experience for me.

Same bullshit happened with Elden Ring (minus the RT, haha).
@@idakev totally agree! A lower resolution would probably make wonders for performance. It doesn't make sense to push such high resolutions with RT, not if they also want to target 60fps anyway.
If only that was true. Sony really dropped the ball with vrr support and left hdmi 2.0 monitor users out in the cold. And if it drops below 48 frames it doesn't even work. Here's hoping they expand it with the 1440p update later this year

They don't even need to drop to 1080p. They're running at almost full 4K with RT and they're hitting 40-60fps. 1600p-1800p should fix the framerate (and that would be downsampled on a 1080p TV which looks nice).
Just add a robust Dynamic Ressolution Scaling solution would be good enough for these games. A locked 1080p is too extreme even for Series S 60fps RT mode in RE2/3. It wouldn't add bloat to the option menu, while also future proof for future consoles since they would get a locked 2160p 60fps RT, though a patch that disables checkerboard rendering on those consoles would be nice.
the 120 fps modes reduces shadow quality. if you play RE3 and face any area with lots of shadows, open the menu and go to the graphics tab where you can toggle 120 fps on/off, and then toggle it whilst the game is semi-visible in the background you can see the shadow quality changing. also i've noticed this year xbox is better in most games vs the last year where ps5 was better. seems the developer tools are maturing nicely for xbox.

There should be a frame cap option in the menu with 30, 40, 60 and 120 (the last one only available when RT is off). This would really help non-VRR users that don't mind lower frame rates. Also, 40fps seems ideal for RT for those using 120hz screens.
This really does feel like a feature that gets left on the table a lot; if you're hovering from 40-50fps most of the time, then offering up a few framerate locks could help immensely. Something like a 'target framerate' option would be hugely appreciated.
with consoles, the key has been to keep things on a plug and play basis. as times passes, consumers become more technologically proficient, so this wouldn't be a bad idea as console gaming can be deemed as the cheaper alternative to PC gaming.
I have been seeing a lot of negative reactions to this for some reason but on pc this has been a huge upgrade for me. the problem on pc was that dx11 was completely removed from the game. meaning that most of the consumer base were either forced to use dx12, sometimes resulting in bugs, crashes, poor performance, etc... on some rigs it played fine, but for the most part it was a joke or... it should've been. lucky crapcom fixed it or there would have been alot more refunds. Glad you covered the mirror in RE2. I tried the rt patch when it first launched, turned it on in settings, then first bathroom I saw the mirrors and thought maybe they screwed up and pushed an update with the menu option available but not actually doing anything
Once again VRR to the rescue. I honestly love the idea of an option to simply remove the frame rate cap without downgrading visuals. It allows those with VRR displays to take 100% advantage of the console with absolutely nothing left on the table.
It's about time. It should be the norm now with these new consoles. Only issue is Sony limits VRR to between 40 -120 hz and not the 20-120 hz both Series consoles can do and PC.

Mostly solid upgrade. If the RE Engine is capable of temporal accumulation, perhaps the Capcom could go the extra mile and implement FSR 2.0 to replace checkerboarding. I feel like this is something all the consoles could benefit from, but especially Series S image quality.
Been playing through 2 again with RT on XSX on the CX and while there have been some drops (mostly in bigger areas like the main lobby in the police station), but by-and-large performance has been fine and the visuals get a nice upgrade. I think if they had 1800p for RT, 60fps would be more than possible. 1440p should have been default for 120fps mode & it's puzzling they didn't do that.
Resident Evil 3 was patched on One X ,downgrading the resolution from 4k to 1600p to save a few fps (to be fair, the framerate was all over the place before). I fear, they will do the same for all modes on PS5/SX because people already complaining again.
VRR can't save the RT mode on PS5 - I noticed something was wrong immediately, and brought the game mode OSD up (the same one as in the video, cause it's a Samsung TV), only to see that it's constantly swinging between 40-60 fps. Once the car explodes, Leon and Claire are separated, and you're facing like 10 zombies in the streets, at the beginning of RE2, it dropped to ~30, and I was out. HFR mode is surprisingly good with VRR, though, the lowest I saw it hit in RE2 was ~80 during the cutscene when you're crawling through the gate to get to the Precinct's East Wing in the beginning (this, and the lab greenhouse were the most framey points of the PS4 version), and usually it stays ~100fps. Did a whole playthrough of RE2 in HFR, and it felt very smooth, indeed. Currently 70% through RE3, and it's the same, so provided you have an HDMI 2.1-compliant display, that would be my recommendation, especially since there's no loss in quality.
@@johannessguten2527 the obvious thing would have it be 1800p upscaled to 4K, it wont save the game from dropping fps but 20% less pixels to render could really help reduce the massive drops
Why don’t the 120 FPS modes have a reduced resolution to compensate? There’s NO option to lower resolution to benefit frame rates across any of these modes?!? Who thought this was best for the players?
Unlocked frame rate in RT and High frame rate mode is a good approach to future proof games, next gen consoles after SX and PS5 will able to utilise these without any extra patch
Future proof at the cost at shit experience until then. No idea why they wouldn’t give the option to lock the RT mode to 30fps. At least most 120hz users probably have VRR to help that mode.
I'm surprised how you say image quality isn't much different from the ps4 pro version, that was the one thing I immediately realized, it's significantly cleaner now with no shimmering, something the ps4 pro version suffers from bad. At least in RE 3
Damn, what a shame to hear about performance problems! They really should have dropped the RT mode resolution to 1440p on Series X and PS5 and 1080p on Series S. That would solve at least 95% of these performance problems.
Exactly... Devs don't seem to understand what people on the series S want, 1440p does nothing for me since my TV is 1080p. It would be very beneficial to have a 1080p rt, it would definitely go almost up to 60fps or maybe it would be a consistent 60
They should have locked the RT versions at 1440p for a rock solid 60fps IMO. Drops into the low 50s are doable, especially with VRR, but when we start getting into the mid 40s like a rollercoaster things start to be less enjoyable. Will you guys do RE7 and PC?

I've been waiting for this video. And I am sure that I am not the only one. Glad you guys came through for us. 👍🏾 So basically, for those of us with VRR-compatible tvs, this is a pretty decent improvement over our first playthrough. Cool!
They better not drop the resolution for ray tracing mode. All they need to do is add a new ray tracing mode with the lower resolution to get a more locked 60fps and change the name of the current ray tracing mode to “ray tracing VRR mode”. These games run smooth on SeriesX with ray tracing enabled on a good VRR display. It’s a shame PS5 doesn’t support low frame compensation.
I played both of these for a little bit with Ray tracing mode and found both looked quite good, really the first games I’ve played where I noticed a significant difference and actually thought I was playing a “modern/next gen” game. I found RE2 didn’t play quite as stanble (in my experience) compared to RE3, which felt like a locked 60 except for one particular moment (when Jill enters or leaves the subway zone under the door). By the way, I have a VRR display that can push these modes a bit further and make them appear more stable. I’m happy with this free update, but it’s not something I can play for long, it makes my Series X an absolute wind tunnel of heat.
The more heat that’s coming out of it, means it’s doing it’s job. I’d be worried if it wasn’t kicking out heat. That’s when you know the heat is not being transferred properly from the CPU/GPU. Hot air is a good thing if it’s coming out.
Unless the air vents are obstructed, clogged or something like that, you have nothing to fear. The 7th gen overheating days issues are long gone, and of anything, your console pushing a ton of hot air out is actually a sign that its cooling system is in full effect. IF you play for a long time and the console shuts down, and does so every time you play, then you have a cooling issue. If that's not the case, just have fun and don't worry about it (it's doing what's supposed to do).
In RT mode I’ve had a much more stable frame rate when I lowered the FOV in settings. I turned it down to about half way and it’s not too narrow but it really helps.

I had a similar issue with Doom Eternal's DLSS where it would stop working and RT would tank the frame rate. The same thing happens with DLSS in Horizon Zero Dawn where it just turns off after a while. FSR does not have that issue and remains on and stable.
Sudden frame drop with RT and DLSS on can be caused by not having enough VRam. In RE they give you a bar of how much vram you're using with the settings you have on, if it goes past that into red, that means you will have terrible peformance. RT especially has very high demand for vram. Doom eternal also has issue with eating lots of vram at higher settings and resolutions.
Because most console gamers "can't even" when they hear "1080p" or "30fps". Aside from that high fidelity ray tracing on console won't be ready until next gen anyway. Right now consoles only have enough RT budget to pick 1 or 2 ray traced effects out of the 4 (reflections, Shadows, ambient occlusion, global illumination). When they can do all 4 at ~medium and hold 1440p/4k @ 60fps that will be interesting
No idea this update came out, finally a reason to hook up my ps5, ps5 dropped the ball on vrr not being on ps4 games, xbox has it on last gen games and it helps I.e. overwatch noticeably
ps has much better games than xbox, but xbox is the way better product - being able to buy older games in the Microsoft store and have them enhanced with things like hdr, 60fps, 4k, sometimes even 4k120fps is just amazing- Not to mention standby is 10x better on xbox than ps, or the fucking quick resume?? easily the coolest shit ever - But again, PlayStation has way better games and way more of them, if only they could just make a baby together yknow
The lack of VRR for PS4 games is of no consequence, because the PS5 just uses brute-force to stabilise the frame-rate anyway. The same is true for unoptimised X1 games running on SX. There are only a few games where the performance is too poor to overcome (e.g. Elden Ring) but that's a fault of the developer, not Sony.
Capcom is the best when it comes to handling next gen remasters. They give you everything you could want. Free with a 4K60, RT, and a 120hz mode. Too many developers just push out 1 or 2 modes and not enough give a 120.
They've made solid remakes going back decades. Their 2002 Gamecube remake of the first RE game on the PS1 is high quality stuff that holds up really well to this day imo. I wonder if they'll ever remake that again.
Just started RE3 on my series S with RT enabled. Looks and runs fantastic, while connected to my 4k VRR TV. Im sure its not perfect like a PC or stronger console, but i really dont have any complaints.
I feel like DF usually over emphasises on necessity of a fixed 60fps, for 90% of people specially for this kind of games, a raytraced mode that is between 40_60 fps is a great option even if they don't have VRR.
Variable framerate feels terrible when dropping to 40 tbh, at least for most people who would have remote interest in channels such as this as it's for the general audience who doesn't even know what fps is. Even VRR can't help drops below 50, you always feel it and it's not good.
The RT modes without VRR are too distracting and give me a headache. They are 100% unplayable without VRR and even then the results are still mixed. RE7 seems to work in RT well though. RE2 and RE3 are best played in the 120hz mode.
I felt the FPS drops in RE7's ray traced mode on my Series S, and that was only into the 50s and upper 40s. The drops into the 40s and 30s in this game are gonna feel awful compared to the locked 60fps or above in the non RT mode, especially as they are often in areas where you need those frames.
This patch made the game really weird for me. I get massive headaches now when playing this game with the next gen patch, even with the "enhancements" switched off. I’m trying to figure out exactly why since after uninstalling the patch and playing the game off the disc, I can play the game for hours without any headaches. Odd.
Would love if DF went back to producing more videos like this. Lots of stuff seems to be getting missed now because of the long form content that has been coming out, but personally I feel like this short analysis is greatly missed.
The channel is slipping into a format that is more interested in DF Retro content+game trailer analysis. The DF of a decade ago would pump out articles dedicated to new releases and how those releases performed (shocker).
With the fps headroom without RT at 4k on ps5/XSX why not have a lower resolution mode at 1080p to hit 120, and maybe a 1080p 60 mode with RT similar to Spider-Man remastered
Good video. Will you be doing a similar one to cover PC too as I'd love to see if you've been experiencing the same issue that I have with 7 where the reflections in the puddles seems to have ghosting issues as does the main gate to the house just after you get to the car. I feel like if they used the engine's "Interlaced" display mode that's available on PC, they could easily get a performance increase without sacrificing too much in visual quality. It helps a ton on my humble little RTX 2060 at 1080p.
I have a monitor that supports VRR, so I don't mind if the frame rate drops as long as the image quality is being improved. All games should offer the option to improve image quality for those who have a VRR capable screen. For those who don't have a a VRR capable screen, a 30 fps cap should do or just stick to the default settings.

Mostly solid upgrade. If the RE Engine is capable of temporal accumulation, perhaps the Capcom could go the extra mile and implement FSR 2.0 to replace checkerboarding. I feel like this is something all the consoles could benefit from, but especially Series S image quality.

Glad to hear the HFR doesn't drop resolution! I've been playing RT with a VRR display and it looks ace - only noticeable drop was in cutscenes.

The game was already gorgeous but this helps it for sure!

I love these video's always pointing out stuff i won't notice when playing the games.
Lmfao for real.
There is a bug in the ray tracing implementation in these games. I have an rtx 3070 and at first the game runs fine with RT on. But after a while the frame rate drops significantly for no reason. When I load the game from a latest save, the frame rate is back up and stable again at 60 fps.
Why not have an option for 1080p+RT?
That would've been perfect for those who favor graphical quality over resolution.

Variable framerate feels terrible when dropping to 40 tbh, at least for most people who would have remote interest in channels such as this as it's for the general audience who doesn't even know what fps is. Even VRR can't help drops below 50, you always feel it and it's not good.

Same here. I don't really care for 4K, especially when hitting those resolutions hurt performance
Sweet! I had no intention on playing RE2 game on series x since it was capped at 30 gps… but now this changes everything
they run amazing im on series x. Others say series S runs really good also
Sad PlayStation collection doesn’t support the free upgrade
Yeah. Thanks to Sony greedines in the last years.
@@cristi8183 Capcom likely plays a role here, too. They'd prefer to upgrade paying customers.
Capitalism.
the changes are subtle but that kinda just shows how good and optimized that RE Engine is...
I've been waiting for this, thanks for making this video!
The Image quality is great with VRR Don't go off UA-cam for image quality lol
It's about time! You guys really sat on this. So far I've played most of 3 on an LG CX OLED with VRR, the framerate mode. It's glorious! Much better resolution and anti-aliasing than last gen, and the shimmering is gone! Great update from Capcom on these wicked games.
Vrr flicker though
@@helloguy8934 are you on LG oled? I haven't really picked up on anything. I've yet to see this video though.
For us VRR monitor folks its been a blast, really enjoying the 120 fps mode in RE3. But yes I agree with the point that it should not be a requirement.
