@noahgibson4233 they're both basically-perfect versions of two different types of games. If you prefer linear games, GOW gets the edge. If you prefer open-world, RDR2 gets the edge. GOW is more my style so im glad it won but they're clearly both masterpieces.

I think BG3 deserve to be higher. So many rewards and it literally shook the entire industry, causing several developers to make statements about how BG3 is the outlier, not the new standard.
baldurs gate 3, the witcher 3, god of war 3, dark soul 3, dragon ball budokai tenkaichi 3, why are all the games titled 3 so good? but in my opinion TW3 is the best, the best game ever made by human civilization, I think TW3 wild hunt
@ThwipThwipBoom nah, it takes away the majority of actual RPG elements in place of a casual friendly approach that's more accessible for a wider audience.
Baldurs Gate is too low man. I get that this is all subjective, but no game on this list pushed the boundaries that BG3 did. A towering achievement that only elden ring could maybe hope to match.
I love bg3. I played it in prerelease, launch, and the last 3 months I've been playing everyday. Doing solo honour mode atm and excited for new subclasses coming up. It's probably in my top 3-5 games ever. All of this to say, the placement was fine. There's no way to rate games that isn't purely subjective, and he hit all of the points that makes the game great, he just didn't rate those strengths as highly as we do.
True, Witcher 3 and BB in the same year were insane. We also got Fallout 4, Until Dawn, Life is Strange, Dying light, Just Cause 3 and Batman Arkham knight. Don't thin there was ever a better year for gaming.
2015 is one of the only years in the past 10 years or so of gaming, where I didn’t have a favorite game of mine come out at all. I’d probably have to go with Mario Maker or MKX out of the games I played.
GTA V story feels like it's made for edgy teenagers GTA IV story feels like it's made for actual adults Edit: Guys I never said GTA V has bad story or even worse than GTA IV
I don't disagree but GTA also plays like it's made for edgy teenagers. And I'd rather the game play well and know how cars work than have a story that doesn't fit the game.
im a typical fps player so i thought i woulden't like bg3, but oh my god. For me it's the best game i have ever played with no competiotion. The replayebility is amazing, the strory is amazing, every singe thing about this game is perfect for me. So it easily takes the nr1 spot for me.
Yeah same man, all my life I’ve hated turn based games, I had nothing to do one Friday and saw bg3, fully set on refunding it within 2h, now hundreds of hours played and finished it 3 times, it’s high on my best games of all time
Literally the only other turn based games that I played before BG3 was the Pokemon series. I was hesitant to get it and only after playing 40 hours of Starfield and being bored I finally bought and played BG3 after hearing nothing but good things. Got 10x the hours on BG3 and still haven’t gone back to Starfield😂
Telltale Walking Dead won because it was a revolutionary title, other nominations were better gameplay-wise but this was the first game that really blew up and proven games can have story as good as movies
@Moogy-o3b that is understandable, but considering all the shenanigans you can do during combat, I'd highly recommend giving it another shot and just try to mess around with what's more fun/funny than what works best
I tried to get into BG3. I really tried. And it’s not even the turn based combat that hurt it for me. Because I like divinity and Xcom. BG3 is just way too complex and overwhelming. Especially considering it was my first time in the franchise. I honestly just got a headache while playing and just couldn’t do it.
yeah definitely a subjective list. i’ve always been more into storytelling telling than big boss fights so having elden ring as #1 is WILD to me lol. bg3 is incredible but witcher 3 ftw all day!
RDR2 absolutely did not get robbed. Did it deserve to win, Yes. But pretending GOW 2018 wasn't an equally deserving winner is IMO,a stupid take as well . Both were excellent in what they went out to achieve and just because you preferred RDR2 doesn't make it not winning a robbery
@YUXC88in my opinion, the gameplay of RDR2 is way less enjoyable than GOW. Graphics, story, and music are fantastic on all three, and RDR2 does have good gameplay. But I don't agree that it's better in every way
@YUXC88 not for me and a lot of other people. I prefer the more story/not entirely open world experience God of War offers. I also prefer the combat, and the look as well
@@colcasey3853 Nier isnt even Platinums best game. Bayonetta 1/2 and Vanquish being far superior to Automata, let alone Yakuza 0. Zero's minigames and side quests were more entertaining than automata. People seem to forget the mediocre crap fest the original Nier was on ps3 15 years ago.
Really great video, love the ranking, especially because i know how hard it must have been to rank anything above the 8th place, as all the games in the top 8 are basically perfect in their own genre.
My brother and I have played almost all of these games together, and he said something the other day that really resonated with me: “Baldur’s Gate 3 is everything that Skyrim thinks it is” and I can’t help but think that he’s absolutely right about that.
Glad this video has blown up. This content is excellent, goes into important details and history that are relevant for comparing all of these masterpieces of gaming while sharing also your own opinion on them. I was amazed you’re under 2K subs. Definitely earned one from me!
Shadow of the Erdtree is my favourite game this year, if it wasn’t an expansion it would be my GotY hands down, but I do have to give props to the other original titles this year like Astro Bot
I personally like sote better than the base game and feel that it’s lowkey a bigger experience. there are so many remembrances and I can probably name more dlc bosses than base game.
@@luke_wiertzbut you have to play the base game in order to enjoy it so that’s where it really shows it’s just an expansion rather than an actually game. Sun wukong should win over it
@@luke_wiertz they could have made different but what made it better is that it is a continuation of the reputation of the main game. The dlc is only as great as it is because of the game mechanics already set in stone. You are just getting more content of what you already have liked before. Thus it isn’t a game but it’s an expansion
I think Witcher 3 with all the DLC is just a little bit better than Elden Ring. It offers a much more complete package when you consider all factors such as story, gameplay, rpg elements, graphics etc. together From a visual standpoint Elden Ring is unbeatable
Both do different things at some of the highest levels in all of gaming. The Witcher 3's story, characters, world building & the actual world itself (specifically Novigrad and Toussaint) are probably the best in all of gaming. While Elden Ring has an incredibly deep combat system, the most interesting world to traverse, amazing visuals & some of the best boss fights ever. I think there isn't exactly a wrong choice between the two it just ultimately comes down to what you prefer more when playing games. I do think the Witcher 3 is better but I also think it has more flaws then Elden Ring, but the things it does well it just does too well to ignore in my mind (I'm probably more bias towards the Witcher because I played it in 2016 and I've always thought it was the best game ever so its probably hard to get something to overcome that, but recency bias could also play a part for the people that think Elden Ring is better).
Astro bit got my GIRLFRIEND into playing video games. She’s never played a video game before, but would wanna hang out with me specifically to just game ☠️☠️
Personally I feel like the 2018 goty isn’t an obvious win for rdr2 I really love rdr2, it has one of the best and most immersive open worlds I’ve ever played. The detail and and variety is insane. The characters a some of the best ever with all them having so much depth. But I do feel that while the plot is great about the gang struggling to stabilise and the conflict that brews, I do feel that some of the pacing at the start and around guarma isn’t the best. Same goes with how quickly the conflict at Rhodes goes. But that’s mainly due to cut content. I also think that there are a few issues with the gameplay as I feel that it can be repetitive especially with the combat. GOW for me is good because it does every aspect of the game to a great level. The story for me rivals rdr2 and the gameplay is better in my opinion but that’s because they are two very different games. GOW isn’t perfect but it does everything well. They are both different games and they each focus on something different and someone’s preferences will depend on what they look for in a game. I love both games and they have both impacted me differently and I don’t have a preference . I’m mainly just saying that it isn’t a landslide for rdr2 for me. But it comes down to what you prefer in a game.
THIS, but honestly it’s just like you said, gow does everything right because while rdr2 has an exceptional story and pretty objectively one of the best in gaming it just does not have good gameplay and like you said the pacing is really bad at some parts. A jack of all traits but a master of none is better then a master of one
I loved both games too. GoW for me was easily the better game. I'm not a trophy chaser on Playstation but this game made me want to get the platinum trophy it was that good.
Overwatch sucks but 2016-2017 overwatch was peak and totally deserved the goty. Also I wholeheartedly believe that breath of the wild is the best game ever made in the last 20 years and it's not even close
Good list, can't disagree much. Sekiro has the best melee combat i can thing off, but honestly i'd put witcher 3 first with all the quest details and dlc's
BG3 should be in the top 3 beyond Breath of the wild and The Witcher 3, but in my opinion, it’s a bigger and better rpg than these two, and its a niche game at base which managed to conquered the world of gaming with an incredible strength like no others niche games did before. My personal top 3 would have been Elden Ring, Skyrim and BG3
My List: 1. Witcher III 2. Sekiro 3. God of War 2018 (RDR II didn't lose to get this ranked 10th 💀💀) 4. Elden Ring 5. Skyrim 6. Legend of Zelda: BOTW (Never played it but heard it's praise) 7. Resident Evil 4 8. GTA IV 9. GTA San Andreas (Nostalgic Factor) 10. RDR 1 11. GTA V 12. Uncharted 2 13. Baldur's Gate III (Great Storytelling; But not my-type gameplay) 14. Bioshock (Never played it) 15. Oblivion 16. Astrobot (BMW and SOTE were way better) 17. It Takes Two 18. Walking Dead 19. TLOU Part II (First one was better) 20. Dragon Age Inquisition 21. Madden 2004 22. Overwatch
I actually agree with most of your list. I just think pitting Witcher 3 over Baldur's Gate is strange for me, but huge W for Sekiro on 2nd place. No way Elden ring is better than this masterpiece
Balatro being nominated to GOTY and Indie Debut is just crazy. They have the debut award already in a bag, so GOTY will go to wukong. But again, Balatro is a Debut of a decade and was initially made by 1 guy. One. Single. Guy.
The damage that current day overwatch has done to peoples’ retroactive memory of the game on launch is insane. The game was massive revolutionary, fun and charming on release, and a lot of people have forgotten how truly special it was.
Man looking back at there really hasn’t been that many bad years when it comes to game releases. I’d say almost every year has had a long list of great releases!
Still a fun game bro. Not every game can stay the same because it’s just not possible. Even games that have a unique system that’s played by millions like Fortnite can’t remain the same when you have Devs that are ambitious and need to try new things in order to be satisfied with their work. Yea OG players may not like it anymore but new players will and that’s what Epic cares about. Longevity
I haven't had the opportunity to play all those games, as much as I would like too. But your video iso great! Overall I agree with most of your statements and I think you did a lot of justice to all the games mentioned and even an overview to gaming history. Amazing list and video!
I know people hate Overwatch now , and for good reason, but in 2016 it was incredible and deserved to at least be considered for GotY. I don’t think it should have won, but saying it’s the “most absurd game to ever win GotY” because Overwatch 2, which came out 6 years after it won, is bad, doesn’t make any sense
Completely agreed. I don't like Overwatch, and I certainly don't like Blizzard. With that said, people are forgetting how big of a wave Overwatch caused. Hell, it was even coined the "LoL-killer". BG3 being at 8 on this list is a bigger travesty than OW winning GOTY. And yes, I've played Civ 6, BF1, DS3 and DOOM.
Gta v did not win game of the year. The last of us part 1 won it. Also broke records for the most game of the year awards till Witcher 3 broke the record and so on.
I think it’s unfair to compare current day overwatch to 2016 overwatch. Like 2024 overwatch is not the game that got GOTY, you shouldn’t compare that at all. You should put the game that came out into the context, otherwise it’s a terrible comparison and very unfair

@@pogethedoge I assume you did the third playthrough of automata right? And got all 5 main endings? Baldur's Gate 3 should not only top this list but any list ranking games, imho. Ranking it as 8 on the list feels like an insult 😅. Of course, it's all subjective, to each their own and all, but damn. 8th? It's THE greatest of all time and it just oozes quality, care, love and perfection in everything, more than anything. Personally, I'd rank all the Rockstar games low, as I've tried them all but never clicked with any of them, but knowing how well loved and objectively great and industry-changing they are, I feel like they got slots they earned. Skyrim is another fun one. It's actually kinda good not great without mods, but modded a top 10 game of all time. I preferred oblivion but Skyrim has aged better
Elden Ring over The Witcher 3 is a crime in my opinion 😅 Yeah Elden Ring is gigantic but The Witcher has way more content and every single side Quest is as good as the main quest. And to think that The Witcher 3 is almost ten years old and still is one of the best games out there in graphics and gameplay just shows the longevity of that masterpiece but as I said it’s just my opinion
Nice vid man, I looked at the likes and sub count and was absolutely shocked, the quality was so high I thought you’d have wayyy more subs! Hope you keep growing (and going)!
From 2004 to 2013, my list would be: Half-Life 2; FEAR; Hitman Blood Money; Portal; GTA IV; AC II; Fallout New Vegas; Deus Ex Human Revolution; Dishonored; The Swapper. From 2014 to 2023: Transistor; The Witcher 3; Dishonored 2; Prey; Celeste; RE2make; Bugsnax; It Takes Two; Elden Ring; Baldur's Gate 3.
Fromsoft is one of the best game developers to ever exist. Their passion for their projects is obvious. They but Treyarch, Activision, and Bungie to shame.
Rebirth did get nominated. But the video and most of these comments really don't make note of it. It's my GOTY because I spent the most time with it and was impressed by the leaps the devs made and how the combat challenged me. But I don't consider myself to represent the gaming community at large.
@RemixedYoshi it falls into many traps that open world games do with pacing and burnout if you feel compelled to do as much as possible once it's available. But it's really impressive considering the limitations of Remake and the combat system has a high skill ceiling. I was good enough to get the platinum, but nowhere near what others are achieving. Low market share doesn't inhibit a game from winning, but if I'm being realistic, I'm expecting a game like Wukong to have a better chance because it's highly rated and not exclusive.
@Guitarmonade i 100% remake aswell it always confused me when people said ff15 combat is better and I was like..um did we play the same game? But I'm assuming a lot of ff7 rebirth sales are people waiting on PC and people waiting for all 3 games to be out.
1) Im a souls stan, ive never played Overwatch, but that game clearly won GOTY. Literally everyone was glazing that game the entire year 2) Last of Us 2 should be last. Ghost of Tsushima shouldve won, and thats not an opinion. a literal fact. Voters literally chose Ghost to win. And got Ghost the voters choice award
i’m sorry but GTA winning over TLOU will forever be criminal to me. TLOU might be one of the best told stories across media and the gameplay was fantastic. don’t get me wrong, GTA was fun and a great game, but legitimately is like comparing a lamborghini to a lexus
Imma die on this hill but early overwatch is probably the best peak of a multiplayer game I’ve ever played. I think at the time it was a decent selection but probably should’ve went to Doom or Dark Souls 3
Saying that gta was a better goty over half life 2 was a crazy take I didn’t expect even going in expecting last of us part II to be very low. I don’t know how you can feel that way if you were to play them both today or played them back then. I have to think you didn’t. Anyways, great video!
Man God Of War 2018 was a masterpiece and it did something impossibly rare in the industry . It reinvented a beloved franchise . R2D2 may be bigger budget more advanced and detailed but the risk which Santa Monica took with GOW is an achievement in itself. Ragnarok is a great game but GOW 2018 is almost flawless storytelling.
You absolutely are not alone in that thinking. Its not even close. Elden Ring is imo is one of the most overrated games ever released. Witcher 3 is a once in a lifetime experience in gaming. The story the characters and the worldbuilding is unrivaled for me. Add the excellent rpg mechanics and addicting combat and exploration and i just do not see how its even an argument.
ER is literally just reskinned DS in an open word setting, with even worse bosses. A solid 7/10 that won GOTY only because the video game industry has been utter shite in recent years.
I don't play a lot of different games, but BG3 is my best game of all time. The amount of player choice, difficulty, and dev attention just makes it better than anything else out there. Playing it solo is great, but it gets so much better when you have a few friends to play with
Walking Dead is one of my fav games its story is literally on of the best iv played but the other games like dishonored and assasins creed were the more deserving ones, i agree.
Glad to see Breath of the Wild making the list. I still prefer Ocarina of Time, but BotW has to be one of the most innovative and influential games ever.
@ I think it was a lot more than just an open world game and was very influential. Like I said, not my favorite game, but I can recognize its influence.
Walking dead was honestly incredibly deserving of it. There were almost no problems or controversy with it at the time whereas the others were controversial. ME3 ruined the series with a bad ending, AC3 was the first AC to feel like just another AC game, and honestly, any other games around at the time like Halo 4 were just bad. I consider it to be one of the worst years of gaming imo so a small team making a beautifully crafted narrative in a game that, at the time, wasn’t over saturated in the industry and was a relatively different concept was a breath of fresh air
as red dead redemption 2 being one of my favorite games of all time. it was not on God of wars level of anticipation that year in 2018. when we first saw Kratos return in that E3 trailer the reaction of the fans was nuts bro.. 2018 was the year of God of War as that was many and i mean many gamers child hood growing up brother.

@ the locations in the DLC look more pretty and memorable. 💅
@@luke_wiertzbut you have to play the base game in order to enjoy it so that’s where it really shows it’s just an expansion rather than an actually game. Sun wukong should win over it
@ that’s just a design choice they could’ve made different. But I think many will agree that the way it’s better to make it seamless to the base game.
It offers a much more complete package when you consider all factors such as story, gameplay, rpg elements, graphics etc. together
From a visual standpoint Elden Ring is unbeatable
Absolutely true, witcher 3 is and will always be the best game I ever played❤
100% Agreed.
Completely agree, but visual standpoint, objectively, horizon 2 forbidden west is the best game ever so far
Gameplay and rpg elements are both better in Elden ring
Both do different things at some of the highest levels in all of gaming. The Witcher 3's story, characters, world building & the actual world itself (specifically Novigrad and Toussaint) are probably the best in all of gaming. While Elden Ring has an incredibly deep combat system, the most interesting world to traverse, amazing visuals & some of the best boss fights ever. I think there isn't exactly a wrong choice between the two it just ultimately comes down to what you prefer more when playing games. I do think the Witcher 3 is better but I also think it has more flaws then Elden Ring, but the things it does well it just does too well to ignore in my mind (I'm probably more bias towards the Witcher because I played it in 2016 and I've always thought it was the best game ever so its probably hard to get something to overcome that, but recency bias could also play a part for the people that think Elden Ring is better).
this is the most accurate ranking list I've seen, it would have been perfect if you'd made the witcher 3 No 1 and elden ring no 2

Astro bit got my GIRLFRIEND into playing video games. She’s never played a video game before, but would wanna hang out with me specifically to just game ☠️☠️
Personally I feel like the 2018 goty isn’t an obvious win for rdr2
I really love rdr2, it has one of the best and most immersive open worlds I’ve ever played.

Overwatch for THAT year was game of the year. Now it’s gone stale but it was great.
Still a fun game bro. Not every game can stay the same because it’s just not possible. Even games that have a unique system that’s played by millions like Fortnite can’t remain the same when you have Devs that are ambitious and need to try new things in order to be satisfied with their work.

@RemixedYoshi it falls into many traps that open world games do with pacing and burnout if you feel compelled to do as much as possible once it's available. Putting OW1 that low is criminal
3:45 I completely agree alien isolation deserved goty
Elden Ring introduced me to soul borne/ soul like genre. Will always love that game.
Glad to see Breath of the Wild making the list. I still prefer Ocarina of Time, but BotW has to be one of the most innovative and influential games ever.
It was just a zelda open world game dude, calm down lol
@ I think it was a lot more than just an open world game and was very influential. Like I said, not my favorite game, but I can recognize its influence.
Any game of the year made the list so BoTW had to make the list.
@@paxconsciente3352bro you clearly do not understand the influence it’s had on the perception of open world and what’s possible with it.
@DeepFriedChumChum wtf are you talking about lol, it didn't do anything new and even zelda fans dislike the game...
The fact that GHOST OF TSUSHIMA didn't win GOTY is very surprising for me.
I don't know how rdr2 didn't win
Sony bias. Same reason TLOU 2 won
@@justadictatorridingonanuke3714 Ghost of Tsushima, which many people wanted it to win, was a Sony game as well
@yannispirou101 the Sony bias between GoT and TLOU 2 cancel each other out. I'm ngl GoT also didn't deserve to win that year either
Because God of war is the better game?
@@tomgu2285 it wasn't though
Seeing this after the astrobot win is hilarious
Walking dead was honestly incredibly deserving of it. There were almost no problems or controversy with it at the time whereas the others were controversial. ME3 ruined the series with a bad ending, AC3 was the first AC to feel like just another AC game, and honestly, any other games around at the time like Halo 4 were just bad. I consider it to be one of the worst years of gaming imo so a small team making a beautifully crafted narrative in a game that, at the time, wasn’t over saturated in the industry and was a relatively different concept was a breath of fresh air
Cmon man putting Skyrim in number 4 and not number 1 is just criminal
RDR2 deserved it 100%
as red dead redemption 2 being one of my favorite games of all time. it was not on God of wars level of anticipation that year in 2018. when we first saw Kratos return in that E3 trailer the reaction of the fans was nuts bro.. 2018 was the year of God of War as that was many and i mean many gamers child hood growing up brother.
@@Rezz_theRealest it's game of the year, not most anticipated game of the year, as a game RDR2 is better
I'm not sure :/
@@bybiskuvi have you played it?
@@Thehidden0ne959 if we’re going back to the year of 2018 when we had no idea who arthur morgan was… people asking why we’re not playing as john marston before the game even released, having such a late release date in the year. God of War was already known. the last time we had seen kratos was GoW3 and he had killed his father Zeus. and tried ending himself at the end of the game. God of war still has an amazing story in itself. Red dead’s story right off the bat was lack luster that year. it grew on people over time. now people are making edits of it. talking about how great the game was but going back to 2018 no one had really known how great the game was. so id say it’s really one of those. Right year wrong time for RDR2 and GOW had the right year & perfect timing giving it the win over RDR2
We do have to go back and remember at the time. For whatever reason, I think maybe online/slower start, people were somewhat upset with the launch. And especially for Mass Effect 3 people were hating on it for the ending
Black myth Wukong defined deserves GOTY. If elden ring dlc wins for the first time with dlc winning, then it would feel robbed and revolutionary at the same time.
Black Myth is overrated as heck imo. I don't think any DLC should win but Black Myth is not GOTY material to me. I think Astro Bot or FF7 are both much better picks. Maybe Metaphor, but I haven't played it so I won't judge.
Baldur's Gate 3 is more than just a game, it's a message that made the greedy devs shiver and cry out, it should be supported at all cost.
