That turned out great! The letters look really good too. Let it be known that this tip only works on a 1.6 cover. The NA 1.8 has raised letters, so people tend to sand down the letters for silver letters.
TheCarPassionChannel I forget you have a NB engine. So yes you're right, the 1.8 NB engines have recessed letters like the 1.6 NA engines. But if you have a 1.8 NA engine, then yours (like mine) has raised letters. I know it can get confusing to those new to Miatas.
That has got to be the cleanest valve cover paint/lettering job I have Ever seen on this. In my opinion this is better than those hydrodipped valve covers
I...really don't understand how a nice looking engine bay is rice. Huge-ass wings, diffusers and massive body kits on stock cars is rice. But how is a show-room class engine bay rice? That makes no sense to me.
well, I know, but he said, "we're going full rice", but I know it's not ricey. Maybe if the cover was green, and the letters were pink. But he's not a moron. Also, Gingium admitted that for a while with his Miata build, Molly, he went rice for a time. But not anymore.
I'm binge-watching your rebirth playlist and I'm in love. You clearly have a love for cars and engineering and have a passion for knowledge and teaching. Thank you so much for posting your videos. You've made a subscriber out of me. Plus you have the pixel phone which makes you that much cooler. I've got one too and I will never buy any other brand of phone. Thank you again and keep up the awesome work.
It must have been his track/race car. Think nothing of spending thousands on engine, brakes, tyres etc but body work is duct tape n cable ties and overspray lol.
Another option for paint when doing the letters is nail polish enamel. Its usually cheaper than hobby paint especially when on sale, available at every CVS, Walgreens, Walmart ect. It's also available in FAR more colors. Model car builders do this to replace testors sometimes. Just fill the syringe and use just like the testors.
"..now on to the reason why most of you are here, The colored Lettering..." Ayo I feel called out Hahaha. Great Vid! I've been using all of your old Mx-5 Videos as a guide for turboing and upgrading my Nb. Lots of thanks for saving me major headaches.
If you are painting multiple parts do them at the same time because different outside temps will change how the wrinkle comes out, the parts will look different.
Looks nice. The NA6 (1.6l) has the recessed letters like that. The NA8 (1.8l) and NB has raised lettering. A little harder, but we have the option of sanding the paint off the letters and having polished aluminum lettering.
+TheCarPassionChannel Using an Ace Hardware bucket gives a bit more high-end torque as well. True-Value buckets add more peak horsepower (about 1 to 2HP in most cases).
Gin-Jesus it's the way that he did it. He was being lazy. he didn't do a good job on his prep work. he didn't prime it. and he painted those parts way too close to his car. that's how it was riced.
Eastsidegeorgiaboy it can't be rice unless his claiming it adds horsepower ,do you even know what Rice stands for ? I've seen people with 500 hp on their car with paint jobs like this (black and red) on their engine bay
I finally got my car put back together! It was a real ordeal, but I got the water pump put on right. The gasket was off the first time I tried and since it wasn't the metal gasket I put extra holes in it with the water pump bolts. I was so relieved when it wasn't leaking coolant and it started up again!
Great idea on how to fill the letters! I did my cover in wrinkle red a while ago and wanted to fill them in black but wasn't sure how. Ordering supplies now!
Nice tip. Very legit. You should do tuning tutorials when comes time for tuning that engine. There's probably tons of people wanting to learn how to tune that would watch em, i know i would
lol.. VHT = Very High Temp... just for those comments that were unsure about the temp resistance... Make sure your surfaces are super clean (take them to the pressure washer and soak them in anti-degrease... then wash... rinse.. and dry dry dry... makes quality paint adhesion for a long lasting finish. If you have oils and such on it... the paint will bubble and crack/peel off.
thats actually a genius idea with the old hose instead of tape aha. i need to note that for when i do it eventually. and that syringe thing!!! mind = blown
Looks excellent! I did the same color combo on my 1.6 valve cover years ago. I did wrinkle powdercoat though, and it's beginning to bubble and flake off (I dont think I prepped the cover well enough). Might have to try the wrinkle paint! I used some leftover G2 caliper paint for the lettering, which has held up extremely well.
Just seeing him spray paint in front of his beautiful pristine turbo Miata almost gave me a heart attack, I know it's at a distance that probably wouldn't get on the car but I can't bare to watch lmao
Do you think the Testors paint will hold up considering the heat in the engine? I did the lettering on mine by completely masking it off using painters tape and cutting the letters out. The I sprayed High Heat paint. Same effect but I will admit that yours looks better...lol
SICK! I have a lovely crinkle painted cam cover and was wondering how to do the lettering...Did a 1.8 but they have raised lettering so was easy to blank the letters...excited about doing mine 👍
I advise you bake the VC on low heat to help harden the paint, after a couple years mine started flaking. That's being subjected to living right next to the turbo though 😅
@@TheCarPassionChannel Will do. I love the way you in hotter climes can simply leave your VHT crinkle outside to crinkle up. Mine I had to coax using very gentle heat from a heat gun. Satisfying though. I LOVE your channel! I’ve just bought a rust free NA6 1991 V special. I’m going to by a cheap VVt motor from eBay and have a go. If nothing else it will be educational and fun. I don’t intend to force induction though.
Oh man, that looks sweet. I used to love my wife's old MX5 with a proper looking motor. I own a golf R now and the motor looks shite compared to this, all wrapped up with a tastefully designed plastic cover 🤣👍🏻
I did this exact idea a couple weeks ago, except i painted the letters red first, filled them with vaseline and then painted black over top. The paint below didnt dry and top paint peeled off when i used a toothpick to remove the vaseline :/
Jimmy Rides84 also don't forget to add two or three speedhunters® stickers on your engine cover It's adding massive torque to your engine (more efficient on v-tec powered engines !!! )
It should be pointed out that wrinkle paint needs to be applied in thicker coats than you would for normal paint. It says so on the can, but I was still too timid doing brake calipers and they mostly looked like that had been painted with normal matte black, though they did wrinkle in a lot of places, just not as much as they should have. Basically, the drying process is what causes the wrinkles by "worming" the material together as it dries and the more material there is to dry out, the bigger the "worms" are.
Always make sure to paint right in front of your car with white wheels, if done correctly you'll be pissed with the end result.
That looks incredible! What a great idea for filling those letters!
Tom's Turbo Garage agreed
The amount of fun this guy gets out from his car is heartwarming.
That turned out great! The letters look really good too. Let it be known that this tip only works on a 1.6 cover. The NA 1.8 has raised letters, so people tend to sand down the letters for silver letters.
+Because Miata My motor is a 1.8.
The 94-97 1.8's have raised letters. Later heads (99-06) have recessed (like Greg's).

Epic idea with a syring. My only disappointment is that I have to watch 10 other videos before I got to yours. Nice job thank you
Your outro is the only one on UA-cam I actually sit through.
My mom found my white paint and syringe, now I'm grounded...
U still grounded?
wait why?
he’s still grounded
How could I be bored when I used this video series to tear apart my 1.6 from my 92 Miata, Greg is the reason I bought a miata!
Love coming back to some older videos and re watching them just because I love your content so much
Also this looks so amazing. Especially that red on the black. Pops so well
Wow, besides Gingium, you're the only other person who admits that they are going rice/were rice before. Cool.

yeah. molly is gonna have 500hp soon! lol
but even with green/pink color, its not rice
how is it race inspired? people should come up with a new word for that stupid shit, its just dumb.
Sebastian Diaz RICE is the lowest form,
Say you're a tuner and you get the respect.
Nice Work Son. Got to admire a young talented man like you. Cheers
I wrinkle painted my valve covers on my 5.3 ls motor and they turned out sweet. The oil cap looks like a old boat gas tank cap.... I dig it!

spraying next to your car made me cringe!
Attila P. Same here!!!
yeh this really killed me too HAHAHA
It kills me but clay removes overspray. More work I guess
I was crying inside the whole time.

Definitely doing this when it gets warm out. That wrinkle paint looks great
freaking clean, my Protege MP3 valve cover needs this! awesome vid man

Looks soo damn good im doing this without a doubt
will I get more horse power painting on a home depot bucket or can I use a lowes bucket?
another_red_miata Home Depot bucket is typically 3-4% more horsepower, but some have reported better low-end response using the Lowe's variant.
wow thanks Greg! i will do this right after I change my headlight fluid.
+TheCarPassionChannel Using an Ace Hardware bucket gives a bit more high-end torque as well. True-Value buckets add more peak horsepower (about 1 to 2HP in most cases).
Nope don't forget to oil your Turbo Encabulator too...
I heard that a Rona bucket can give up to 7%
the best job ive ever seen on a valve cover
Can't wait to see it in the car man!
So how does painting your valve color make it rice. If you do it correctly it should look good
Gin-Jesus it's the way that he did it. He was being lazy. he didn't do a good job on his prep work. he didn't prime it. and he painted those parts way too close to his car. that's how it was riced.

It doesn't "make it rice". This is just something that ricers generally do

Some of the best car mod tips around coming from this channel

Love the way this turned out thanks for the tips on the lettering I'm going to paint my valve cover tomorrow!
Tip: use spray "non skid" / "no slip" paint for a nice "lite" texture, for valve covers, badges, trim and more!
Mind blown with the lettering 👍🏻
If you take your stuff to a powder coater, ask them for splatter black. Amazing smoooooth wrinkle finish.
Great video bro i can't wait for this build to be finished!!! Good job Craig Johnson
Great idea on how to fill the letters! I did my cover in wrinkle red a while ago and wanted to fill them in black but wasn't sure how. Ordering supplies now!
2nd rule is don't paint anything near your car unless you like overspray.
I watched the ending twice! I'm for sure trying this.
no words in my vocabulary to describe this build..
Dig this but don't stop telling me how to torque my oil pump! You are the best on UA-cam!!
Awesome job dude, I've been trying to this on my 16v 2.0 VW intake. Thanks for sharing...

Max Herman he has some
That came up AWESOME dude liked and subbed! Ill use that on one of my own valve covers now lol!!
Just wondering if them letters will flake of when engine heats up
KONRAD the enamel bottle says flammable tho
The flammable thinner will evaporate off as the paint dries.
Excellent job. Thought everyone powder coated. Great Channel. Will do this soon to all my cars!
good to see a how to yet bad prep, you spray outside (dust and bugs w/ other debris) also right next to a car (over spray)
Seriously considering stealing this look for my Miata's valve cover. This looks sick as hell!
Strangely satisfying
I use touch up paint pens for this kind of stuff but it never sticks well or looks good. This is a great idea, nice man!
That came out super sick

i want to know the hp his going for
Somewhere In Texas I think it's 7HP gained 5HP for the black wrinkle 2HP for the red 👍🏁🏁

lol
He's going for 325hp on pump gas and 350 on E85
+Somewhere In Texas 325ish on 91 and maxing the turbo out on ethanol, maybe 375-380ish.
You are a legend, because of you I did the same but mine is red to black letters
