- I try to provide some insight on reasons your shower could leak. Any one of the pointers I provide could be the issue, OR there could be multiple issues...either way it can be a fatal flaw that will cost you thousands to repair. Know that which you don't know about your shower !

you do not know what you are talking about. Do you know what weep holes are on a mud set pan. How about the pre float that puts the proper slope under the pan.

Main problem is the waterproof membrane has not been done correctly but still can be fixed. The gaps around the drain have to be sealed and all movement joins where walls of tiles meet floor etc a coat of sealer to all grout joins in entire shower and job done.

anyone know a good tile layer in central Indiana?
Mosaic is fine for a shower and curb. Tile and grout have zero to do with waterproofing. A properly built shower would function 100% with or without tile. The shower build is the problem.

Yes-I have done tile 25 years. Mostly mosaic and sanded grout. 0 calls backs in that time

My money is on that open joint beneath the capping on the knee wall. A significant amount of the water flowing over the edge of the capping will track back towards the wall via the underside of the ledge. Leaving that space un-caulked was a fatal error, imo.

Never done this type of work, but I would cut a groove along the underside of that ledge.

I've done tile for 35 years. Used to float and set three MUD TUBS WIT 1/4 ROUND IN ONE DAY. Three MUD kitchens in a day.
Water can be going into that Gap under the ledge that is not caulked because it will run and drip into it. That's why on a window sill they have something called a drip edge.. in a shower they don't have that so you need to have that caulked. Water was easily running down that and into the wall
a drip edge can be created in the marble knee wall cap by grinding a shallow line all along the bottom edge of the marble cap about 1/4 inch in from the front face.

I would have thought the leak would have come mostly from around the drain area. Especially with the space in the caulking around the drain. It also experiences the most amount of water during a shower. Are most shower drains designed so that if there are any leaks around the drain, it still leads to the drain pipe ?
I already bought sanded grout. Can I use it if I plan on doing it by hand and not getting on on the tile? Also my leak is coming from the gaps between the floor tile and wile tile. I've waited days and days and its still a little constant. Hot water pressure? I have no idea but I have to wait. The water leak isnt horrible but constant and it smells a little foul. Is this water damage working its way out that got unnoticed or is it from another source? the O ring? I'm capable let me know I need to get this done lol.
My guess is the shower pan liner was not done correctly.
Just because you can see a tiny bit of the liner inside the drain does not necessarily mean the liner was installed correctly, I've seen it dozens of times. Can't eliminate something on a hunch. The process of elimination is on fact, not what you think.
They used grout in the corner and where wall/ floor meet. After you tore out did you use silicone caulk or epoxy in those areas?

When you say waterproofing, you mean something like RedGard? I waterproofed from floor to sealing, putting tape and extra coats at all joints and especially at the curb (including over the curb and outward on the bathroom floor). Does that mitigate most water leakage issues coming through the floor tile? I used pebble tile on the floor and I will be putting at least a few coats of sealant on it. I'm also in Colorado which is an exceptionally dry climate.

How did he do his corners in pan.
I'm guessing that mud bed is completely saturated (possibly clogged weep holes) the bottom row of marble looks to be wicking water up from the pan and are very dark (wet). Once saturated the water will eventually find a way out and likely bring forced to any penetrations of the pan or where it's cut/fold over the curb...
Unfortunately only way to know for sure is to start some demo and investigate further. Good luck
The whole first row of marble is completely water logged. Was it even sealed?
You don't suppose the marble could be sucking the water straight through do you ?
Will you be doing the repairs to this shower? If so I hope you post more videos as you find problems.
I may be doing the repair...if I do I'll record it & post.
1. The problem is there is no preslope. That's the damp spot by the drain. I guarantee the flange is not flush with the subfloor.
2. They embedded the wall substrate into the mud bed. It absorbs moisture and causes that discoloration.
You can always plug the drain also to help guide you to the problem
that floor tile looked dated.. I cant believe it was install only a year ago, I was thinking it was a redo with marble on the wall as a upgrade with the floor from a prior original construction

Having a similar issue. Shower is leaking all of a sudden into the ceiling below. Wood beams wet in the crawl space. It’s an old building and just happening now
I just had my shower done. I watched your videos and checked behind my guy. He followed pretty much everything, except he didn't use an epoxy grout. He used prism, should I go back and seal the grout? There is also some grout cracking on the floor in the corners.
I happen to like prism, it works great and I've never had any cracking issues with it, also you don't have to seal it although with a shower floor I would still recommend it
Just a couple of questions. Did you or anyone else plug the drain and fill the shower with water? If the pan was done correctly then there should be no leaks. Is there slope on all curbs ? I've seen showers "leak" because the water actually flowed out into the bathroom floor. Also leak because doors and glass enclosures were screwed through waterproofed structures and not sealed by installers. Just thinking. Installed tile for well over 20 years and have seen a bunch of ways water can sneak out. Think about pulling plates off valve assy. And shower head to check plumbing for slow leaks. Any way to access under tub to check knee wall from behind?
All very good & valid points. The areas you CAN access like the shower valve/head or the glass structure should be done first...all the other areas are touch & go, even if you find the leak it's a moot issue since it begets a redo. I often find the issue at tear out, killing the patient to find the disease.
I had my bathroom remade in sweden, they made a 0.2 degree slope from the furthest side of the room towards the shower in concrete then they used a pink latex sealer followed by a fibermesh membrane and then they applied some purple/grey silicon paste they smeared out with a roller on the entire bathroom 3x2meter including the walls and roof , then they applied the tiles at a 0.2 degree angle at the furthest and getting more and more slopy .. in my case, even if the water goes through the tiles or in between it is still stuck and if it gets saturated enough to begin to move it will move towards the drain. sorry for my bad vocabulary with the exotic art of making bathrooms ..it's quite interesting to see how strange american standards are in comparison.
Mibb from Sweden too, living in the states, a lot of building practices here are very strange. Seagull farts and a house collapse.
We have all that stuff in the states too. its just that DIY and unlicensed contractors are a thing here too. This shower was probably the work of someone who had know idea what they were actually doing. I used to work in retail at a big box store, in the tile department, the number of ghetto "contractors" i talked to on a daily basis who had no idea what the proper use of waterproofing membrane was, or that you can't use MASTIC on a shower or tub surround was astounding. I got in arguments with them on a daily basis, tried to educate where i could. My favorite was when they would have their client with them, and i started dropping knowledge on them and they had no idea. made a few lose a job like that. good times. Glad i don't work there any more. haha.
What thinset and grout do you recommend for shower pan? I'm using 2" hex marble mosaic and can't find much information on what to use? And also a sealer for after the install?

With a marble tile, you need NATURAL STONE THINSET...for the grout you'll need an unsanded, perhaps even an epoxy grout...sealer is VERY important with a natural stone, so get one that is meant for it.
That grout is not sealed correctly if at all. That's very important and surprisingly enough a lot of contractors don't know. It's crazy. That's why water damage claims are the highest insurance claim period. It'd be nice if everyone did it correct but showers would last longer and we would have a lot less work. All my remodels are failed showers .
Sealing the grout has nothing to do with why this shower is leaking. A shower WILL NOT LEAK if the membrane is correctly installed. That is the issue. You can seal the grout, caulk all of the corners waterproof it on the surface but it will eventually leak again. And the problem is you may never know it until significant damage is done.
Having been through leaks, I completely avoid tile and grout. With rentals, it's not practical to somehow intrude on a constant basis with the tenant to ensure they don't use harmful cleaning methods or cleaners, and so on. With a solid, one-piece pan, if you have a leak, it's the plumbing or a wall joint.
If you consider how porous grout and tile can be or can become over time, you set yourself up for much pain by using tile. You should honestly think of each 1/16" of grout as a leak source - literally all your grout can eventually allow water to get into the rubber/vinyl barrier underneath.
In your home you can take care of your tile/grout but it will still fail after a while, and the maintenance is annoying. As if we don't already have enough "sources of annoyance" in our lives.
Using as few 'moving parts' in anything is better. A one-piece high quality pan. Not several dozen tiles and huge runs of grout. Mein gott.
problem is probably liner and/or the preslope. there isn't any problem using mosaic and sanded grout on the floor as long s drainage is good
In showers, we only use unsanded grout, and make sure there is a gap where the wall tiles meet the floors for enough room for grout and then caulk. We also always only use 1/2 " wonderboard, nothing else , No lite weight either ! My Grandfather use to use lead for liners, tells you how far we go back
I just saw another video where u said to use sanded grout?? And that was on a Marbel surface. I’m using Marbel in entire shower, what grout should I use?
You cannot use sanded grout on marble tile, you can however use prism which you can get at Home Depot, you can use that for sanded and unsanded applications

Why not put extrention on drain, tile over floor, clean and recaulk all corners and put a top notch sealer on the grout..much cheaper and you get rid of standing water...call it cheap patchwork, or financially smart.

Is it a good idea to place new tile over old tile? or should the old tile be removed? my concern is that if you place the new over the old it will not be as strong hold.
You are correct in your thinking, never a good idea to put tile over tile... although there are exceptions to the rule a shower would not be one of them

This exactly what I am up fixing. Home is about 10 years old, frame less glass on two sides, mosaic tiles shower floor, ceramic tile walls and marble floor in bathroom. Shower has big shower head and three body heads with pressure. After moving about three years ago, stared noticing dampness on marble tiles a year ago. Had handyman caulk it but that did not help.
Now I am fixing it myself (I am owner not pro or handyman) learning from these UA-cam videos. I removed layer of grout and caulks on edges. This weekend re-grout it using pre-mix grout (container says it can be used in shower with 5 days cure time). Will be using silicone caulk to cover gaps.
I do have a small about 1.5 inch tile chipped away where three walls meet and filled it with grout. Hoping I will be able to fix it and cover all hidden cracks and gaps that I discovered.
this floor mosaic is not a true mosaic. It is a sheet with a slight grooves at the top for grout that do not go through to the bottom of the tile. . there is no true separation between each square. so it is really a solid tile made to look like mosaic. I have it.

I actually don't recommend epoxy grout oh, it ends up looking like plastic and it's a bit difficult to work with

First off, looking at that Carrara marble it is obvious the home owner has never sealed it. becaue of this, water will wick to the outside once it gets saturated.
Secondly, just because you see a liner in the drain does not mean it has been done properly. #1!!!!!! mistake a newbie tile setter makes is to not glue the liner to the bottom half of the drain. If the water backs up during a shower then water is flowing under the liner and to the outside via the drain. (remember this "Starr" next time you boast about a Redgard shower yet still use a standard drain with a liner...weepholes flood your "dry"- drypack....)
A water test shows this if you put the plug several inches down the drain (this is code, but not all inspectors realize the importance of this)
Lastly, look at the signs of the tile job: no grout under the slab overhang? Was the setter in a rush or just didn't care?
And Sanded grout over marble?...this alone tells me the guy IS an inexperienced setter and does not know what he is doing and surly did not install the liner correctly.

Just rip out the tile, get a smooth surface again, slap some redgaurd around, and enjoy an art project. Or hire a tile shower pro, but don't just hire a random tile guy who's never done showers. I just had to re-do my tile floor because of a poor waterproofing job, had a little more time and material been spent I would have saved hundreds of dollars and the wonderful experience of removing thinset.. The tile is just the decoration, a good framing and waterproofing makes or breaks a shower job. Also try to keep your grout sealed, if your on a well and don't have a soft water system it can literally eat your sealer off in a few months if you take a lot of showers.
I had a tile guy come in and ask me why do the toilets leak after he installed the tile. Just another example of tile guys not knowing some basic plumbing 101

All of the points you bring up are valid from a tile-setters perspective but NONE of them will cause a leak if the waterproofing was done properly. The membrane has to be installed correctly. IT IS THE MOST CRITICAL STEP.
This whole video bothers me. It is plain OBVIOUS that the knee wall is where the shower is leaking since it was not caulked underneath. Water will just roll underneath the marble and into the wall. ALL one has to do to fix the leak is CAULK underneath it with silicon! What is so hard? It would fix the problem in no time and with no expense. Instead you are going to TEAR OUT the shower tiling???> Are you freaking kidding me? What a fool the homeowner is to pay you for nothing.
I think he is trying to point out multiple problems with the installation. He also points out what they did right. If the leak is from the knee wall, the knee wall is now soaked and may be rotting out, and may need to be torn out. He pointed out two problems with the knee wall one,the lack of sealing the top under the lip and two, not sloping the lip. He also pointed out a common problem that was avoided, having a grout line on the sill or cap to the knee wall. Most contractors will propose a variety of solutions and give their best estimate as to the benefits and risks of each. If the plumber says the problem is just lack of sealing under the knee wall lip, but that doesn't fix the problem, the homeowner is going to be pissed with the plumber for not identifying and fixing the problem.
aight bro, yeah theres a gap, but anoyone who does showers knows that doesnt always mean thats where the leak is. ive had plumbers turn on showers ive built before grouting with no leaks. this is a pros game bra. trying ur silicone idea is cool if you a homeowner, but it will only fix the gap and not the underlying issue. plus bro didnt u read the card, hes in georgia(ever hear of black mold?) there are other ways to see if the pan is leaking. its got to be torn out. u dont know what ur talkin bout
To bad the leak has been happing for a while now that they probably already have mold and water damage underneath. Tiler should have checked .

Yes a shower pan redo can be done going up the wall about 12in, everything torn out from below that and rebuilt leaving the rest of it intact

It was never determined, I wasn't called to repair it. The things I talk about are REAL possibilities based on other tear outs I do all the time.
Still could be pan at drain. Why don't you cut a hole underneath and show us. That tile guy was good. Nobody knows the tile guys original circumstances. The contractor could have told him to do it a certain way.
