  • This homeowner had a shower that was leaking out of the bottom of the curb when he would use it. When he called me, he was expecting to have to do a full shower and tub remodel because he figured there would be no other way to repair it. I told him to hold on, and I would come over to investigate to see if there was anyway I could save the shower. It turns out that the shower had clogged weep holes at the drain.
The methods I show here can also be employed when needing to repair a chipped tile or grout on your shower wall or floor. Using a 4" grinder to cut out the tiles before you chisel them will help ensure that you don't chip the tile next to it.
I removed a few tiles around the drain, unclogged the weep holes, and re-installed the tile and drain cover.

While clearing the weep holes is a valid approach here, as the clogged weeps will cause water build-up in the mudpack/pan. The actual leak at the curb is likely the result of the tar separating from a deteriorated wooden curb. They did not use an NTCA approved 40mil pvc membrane, instead using tar. Solid formed and poured concrete curbs with sheet pvc imbedded in the concrete will last forever. Most plumbers and contractors have never heard of this technique, or won't spend the extra 2-3 hours to form-up a curb and pour it solid concrete. Weep holes in two-part drains are designed to drain the mudpack and prevent excess water in the pan and serve a useful purpose. However, a proper pvc membrane and curb system still should not leak outside the curb even with clogged weep holes. The water will still find its way into the drain without breaching the shower perimeter. Additionally, most plumbers/contractors have no clue how to properly install membrane without bunching it up in the corners causing the backer board to flair out. The trick is to notch out the wall studs and give the membrane a place to go in the corner folds. This all requires time, knowhow and common sense which seems to be in short supply these days. Stay away from styrofoam (light weight quick&easy) systems, mastic tile adhesive and voodoo waterproofing gunk from Home Depot, or anywhere else. Always use a concrete wallboard with 6mill vapor barrier behind covering the stud wall. Always prefloat shower floors, use properly installed 40mil pvc membrane imbedded in a poured concrete curb, keep the drain running free, and it will last a long, long time. Keep in mind, shower floors, mudpack, grout etc. never completely dry out when used continually. Most importantly, when fabricating showers or tub enclosures/floors the use of any building materials or tile adhesive products that can't be submerged in water indefinitely is inviting failure sooner or later. The 'latest European' shower systems look inviting at tradeshow displays with their lightweight styrofoam pan/curbs/walls covered in "waterproof" paper held together with thinset. Good Luck! For anyone who thinks this is thoughtful engineering I have a very nice German car with a plastic engine for sale.

Based upon your and others' videos, I want nothing to do with weep holes. Everything I see leads me to believe that they will always eventually clog, be it soap scum, skin cells, water deposits, or whatever. Going with a membrane-style installation over dry pack.

Its ridiculous how tiny the weep holes are. You can hardly see them. I cant understand why they are not at least twice or three times the size.

More of a temporary bandaid for low-cost fix jobs. Since no disclaimer that waterproofing/membrane should usually be added on top of the area/deck mud, more hack jobs will watch this video and just tile directly over deck mud with thinset like those videos that show to tile directly over backer board.

Hey Isaac, we had the exact same leak and a tile expert we had brought in had the same theory about the weep holes being plugged with tar. After demoing the pan that turned out not to be the case, so it will forever remain a mystery...

  • @ef2967

Im surprised it lasted 20 years without problems. Can't believe they covered over it with tar.

hot mop is notorious for bad or no pre slope and for covering weep holes, always always pre slope yourself and make sure weep holes are open

I am a general contractor and been in trades for 30years in bay area. I've done it all and specialize in kitchen & bathrooms these days. I do most of the work myself , but have subbed out tile portions every now and then. I can't tell you how many times tile guys don't pay enough attention to the weep holes and I have had to explain how important it is to make sure they don't get clogged!! pea gravel is a good choice! The fact that that shower has been leaking into subfloor for so long is a reason to demo the whole pan & replace the rotted subfloor etc. When dryrot starts it needs to be removed or the rot will continue even if you clear the weep holes and stop the leaking. I commend you for educating those that need it!!

You need to buy multitool... You have triangle blade for removing that thinset, and also blade for cut the grouting between the tiles. Instead you're using that scraper. It's noisy but easy and faster than that. Thank you for your help because we are all leranig from you. I'm in social housing, meaning I'm looking things like this all days. Have a nice Christmas!
