Just had to re-do my shower, grout failed in corners, pulled it down to the studs about 2.5 feet up from the bottom, redid the backer board filled in the space where he had the backer board hitting the ground and left a gap, then waterproofed it (it was not waterproofed) and re-tiled it with a tile that I couldn't match exactly of course.... I learned a ton from watching your videos and now it's not the prettiest but I'm confident it will last... sanded grout in the tiles and sanded caulking in the corners.
Excellent heads up on inner workings of a shower
Just so much common sense. Hurry up contractors in it for the wrong reasons. Another great video sir. I’ll be donating to you soon. Thanks for making these videos.
I just purchased a home that had a tile job that was obviously done by the previous owner and has all of the same mistakes you just pointed out. Only the LFT is not flush and looks horrible to me. I shudder to think of what I'm going to find underneath when I redo it. Your videos are so well done. Thanks for sharing.
Wow So Much Knowledge in this 1 video. Thank you very much.
I a tile shower that has been leaking into wall. And everything in this video is what im looking at in my shower. 🤦🏻♂️
Its all completely wrong.
Does it really matter what grout you use on the floor? I thought water was supposed to go down to the liner and through the weep holes in which case you could leave it ungrouted 🙂 if a preslope was done. Only way i can see a shower leaking is if the liner was done wrong or the drain, a pipe and the curb.
I'm late in the Game just wanna say I appreciate you and your Videos very Much
Thank you
its like a broken record, same mistakes made by tile setters that try to do showers. Ive come across a couple that nothing was waterproofed, the guy used greenboard, the curb was just a mess and actually tilted out of the shower. I never ever use cut tiles like that on the floor. 1000 grout lines, your gonna have issues later on for sure. I hope that there is no water damage done to the ceiling below the shower. Great vid. Hope home owners can get the gist of what has to be done in a shower.
Yes I agree with everything you said, these guys as well as another one I went on this week refused to push the button, they are trying desperately to put Band-Aids on things.... kind of like when you are told you have cancer and you only have 6 months, then you're flying off to Mexico and Canada and everywhere trying to take any medication you have to fend it off but yet you die anyway
@@StarrTile Iam finding more and more people dont want to spend the money and want the quick fix. Well the quick fix might work for a very short time, then what? Had one guy want me to tile over the existing tile thinking that would help.
great job! hey i have the sam eshower need your help. the water was shooting onto the forward shower wall where, thinly cracked and chiped grout was there for a long time, so now the 6inch wall cavity behind the shower wall that is getting the water hit with, is leaking or molding at the bottom trim level. odors of mold. So is that means the backerboard or pan membrane is broke? no other leaks , what to do? how do you prove it to the builder warranty? thank you!
you showed us the problems, but not solutions
So helpful..thank you
Its kind of funny how in any trade there are mistakes and you learn from them whether you do them or its from someone else. There are journeymen that defend mistakes tooth and nail instead of improve. I guess that is why there are 60 year old trades men working 40 years and are terrible at thier job. I like these videos because its always learning a way to do better by seeing others mistakes. Why make a square cut when a circle hole would be better? Lazy to go down to the van and get a hole saw, or not have one at all that day, or lastly for the contractor that wants to do cheap work dont wanna spend the money? Anyway keep up the good work expose the mediocre starrtile!
I have hole saws for any hole I'd need to drill and still cut small squares on some occasions.. absolutely nothing wrong with it and doesn't effect anything in any way
Thanks again!!!!
very nice
Appreciate!
Make so much sense.
my goodnes i hope you never come to the bathoom i tiled but i did make shure to thoughly waterproof it
I think the guy who built this, built mine as I have the same problems. No slope on curb, and water leaks in corner, floor not set right and improper grout (already had to dig all the hor- vertical joints out and redo ( bandaid for now)
Not sure when bathroom was done we bought the house and i put my Home inspector hat on (i’m OCD on things)
Debating now if i am gong to rip it all out and hire it done ( i don’t have time ). OR
Keep trying go find a solid piece of tile to go on top of curb vice the 4” square bull nosed used.
Spite best efforts, water makes it way through the bottom left corners as there is no slope. and i know my repairs to the joints from l
floor to wall are good for now, it doesn’t match up.
i have a few boxes of tile. whole bathroom done this way (over radiant floor heat which we don’t use)
Q) remains. but the shower and redo to compliment rest of tile in bathroom room or redo the whole shower and all the bathroom tile. (!$$ plus time plus mess)
i can’t find a tile place to get a new sill plate for the curb. i want a solid piece and tear old out.
Thoughts? same problems identified here. the guy did good job on floor in bathroom (less place switch for radiant heat too high. i input have maybe 2.5 boxes of this tile. but none of the 4” to redo the curb and i don’t want the grit lines either.
Unfortunately trying to mitigate issues after the fact is difficult. And despite the cost, were it my house I'd start over again. You need to be happy with it while you're there and not pass problems on to next person. But that's just me, should be corrected so you don't have issues 5 or 10 years later.
Does it matter square cuts?or little circular cuts around plumbing??at the end plate covers you dont see it?
Still bugs you?
It only bugs me slightly but I wasn't so focused on any particular thing as I was it overall and if the guy doesn't have a hole cutter it tells me a lot... in addition to all the other things I pointed out
I cut my circles with a wetsaw from the back and finish with a hammer and screw driver..that doesn't make me a bad installer cause im tired of buying bits for something I can do on a wetsaw
@@defiantfury7109 that's not what I said in the video, I commented on the preponderance of amateur mistakes and my observations show me that he doesn't build showers
@@defiantfury7109 yea i do the same thing, when you do 10 to 20 showers on a school its just faster with the wet saw or grinder, square cuts don't mean athing, i been doing this for 16 years and no one has said a thing or pointed out.
That happened to me!! So what's tyour recommendation? Replace bottom tile and where I stand to take shower? Or the whole shower tile?
Everything going bad with a shower is usually a foot from the bottom, so taking out one tile up and taking out the entire shower pan redoing it is way to go, there's no point in dismantling the entire shower when 90% of it is still functional
What are your thoughts on redoing all the grout first in case it stops the leak without having to take anything apart?
In no way shape or form is grout a waterproofer unless it's epoxy. Leaks of a shower never happen because of grout failure, it almost always has to do with the prep process
I was going to do unsanded grout tomorrow for floor shower :( .
Do u think I should use sanded grout in the wall shower ? Or just the floor ? Thanks big time
If it were me I would use sanded grout for the entirety, or you could just go with prism grout in which case it will not matter what the grout spacing is and you can use it for walls and Floors
Once upon a time, i was a really good tile guy who tried his hand at showers. Guess what. I never did one wrong.
Homeowners want cheap prices so they get cheap work.
How much he charged for that ? This is most important thing.
1:16- Typical not atypical.... If internal "stuff" is going on then the damage is typical....
You should try an app called Callmart. Lets you charge by the minute without having to make the user go through paypal first. I saw another youtuber use it and thought it would solve your phone in issue
U can do good work when u start doing showers people who work like this shower just have no skills or they just dont give a shit
7 days???? Way too much time.
So let me get this straight he's a tile setter and not a shower builder!! And your a shower builder and not a tile setter!
Making a circular cut dont make no difference what so ever you dont sound like a tile professional ur self also you don't need a circle cutter
I never said that you need one, I pointed out eight or nine different ways that I could tell this guy doesn't build showers and that is just one of them... as I said on the video if I can see surface mistakes then I know full well everything below it was done incorrect
@@antoniomiranda7329 it sure seems like your panties are in a bunch!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA
Get to the point!
Everything is the point to the ignorant consumer. And I'm not a mind reader so I don't know what information you were looking to find, but if you didn't find it here then just move along
Video says “Why showers leak” ; he got to the point and well beyond you idiot
this sounds like a sales pitch!! are you justifying a complete tear down?
No actually I said just the opposite, when I do a shower pan redo the walls stay intact.
How can you do a pan redo without damaging the walls? No way to get the liner up the wall
@@jaqrabitr liner goes 8" up the wall, the tile was 12" so yes he could redo the pan with just taking out the bottom row of tiles.
Starr Tile said, Its almost impossible to match the same tile 5-6-7-8 years down the road. Tile manufacturers make a tile for a short run and move on. Starr Tile said to make sure you buy a couple extra boxes just incase of failure.
