Microsoft: We need a Japanese presence. MIcrosoft: buys a Japanese studio (Tango) and closes it right away after it releases a banger hit that gets them a lot of praise. Microsoft: Bethesda and all of our developers who're trained to make long complex games need to make short games like Tango did. We need more short fun games. World: *Collective Face palm*
Let’s not forget how it was so selfishly worded. “Prestige and awards” what happened to making games for people to have fun playing them, not to make you rich or famous.
@@thomasalvarenga2839 That has been a thing of the past for a long time in the AAA space. The only people who still make games for the sake of making games are indie developers.
Microsoft alienated Japanese gamers more after shutting Tango Gameworks. They were already pissed off when that email came out about Microsoft not giving up on buying Nintendo.
@@Seoul_Soldierthere’s a huge difference between the devs who make the games, and the publishers who take the profits. The devs don’t get to choose what’s in the final product.
And to think they wanted to buy Nintendo and thought that they have no future without merging with them (and as Phil said something to the effect of "It's only a matter of time when they will realize where the future lies"). What a joke.
Ever since they bought Rareware 22 years ago, aside from KI reboot and Rarereplay, which is just a massive porting job. They never did anything that people wanted or even come close to what gems they made with Nintendo back in the day. Rare wanted to make Banjo-Threeie but since the Havok physics engine was new that time, they told them to make a Banjo game with the new physics engine.
I was discussing this few days ago and a guy came and said I was pretending being a businessman. I said: - I don’t need to be a businessman to know when a company delivers a bad service. Same as you don’t need to be a tire repairman to know when your tire is flat.
@@FaeAvalonthat’s funny because cod was only good when Xbox had its hands on it. As soon as cod signed that deal with PlayStation, it fell off. Now Xbox literally owns cod. This is going to be the best cod in years.

I don't understand game companies. I think they're probably the most short-sighted companies out of all industries. All companies need money but all companies need to make risks and if they can't handle those risks then they shouldn't make them in the first place.
I mean I can’t really blame Microsoft too much here. Phil Spencer spent WAY too much money and had dug himself a hole that’s going to be hell to get out of. Microsoft looks like they had enough and needs to see some results. Xbox should have never bought Activision.
As easy as it is to blame the the Xbox management team here, it's pretty clear this order came on down from above them. The Xbox team were the ones trying to diversify with smaller studios. It was their project, their baby, and they likely got thrown under the bus by the higher ups the moment it didn't immediately produce hundreds of millions in profits and the shareholders threw a hissy fit. The xbox team lost serious face within Microsoft for what they tried and now they are the ones the board is throwing to the wolves when it comes to the gaming community's response. So now they have to sit there and smile mouthing empty corporate platitudes while eating crow from both their task masters and the community.
The last time Microsoft allowed talent to slip throw their fingers, they kept Halo and Gears, and turned them into almost worthless franchises while Epic made Fortnite and Bungie made Destiny I really dont get these moronic suits, they want big franchises but dont care about the talent, my guy when has an incompetent studio ever made a blockbuster franchise?
@@SyDock0X0 front what i understand, Epic made Gears of War, but they werent a part of microsoft, i dont know all the details, but i think Epic funded the development of the games either partially or in total, part of the reason they left Gears behind, is because they didnt want to risk developing another game given the high budget it demanded
The issue is they develop game software like they do for office suite software. But they don't understand. Any competent dev can do some simple office app. Talent isn't as easy to swap out with game devs. The fact they still have a large contractor force for game development is wild
I actually read this as a prerequisite class for having had in college for most games in 2012, I was caught by surprise as I had yet to realize how manipulative games were starting to get especially with Destiny on the horizon.
@@oo--7714 I didn't know that. But valve mostly makes hardware now. I think they have a game coming out soon. It's not like the entire storefront is like a casino so unless it goes that way I'm not seeing any harm they're doing for now
Compare this Tango Studios disaster with Sony's handling of the development of "The Last Guardian"... they saw it through to the end, even though this game jumped platform (originally intended for PS3), and the lead designer Ueda jumped ship and quit Team Ico halfway through it, and it took far, FAR longer to develop than originally planned - and with its somewhat strange concept, it was never going to be a massive super-hit anyway. But they still didn't abandon it.
people are comparing this to the closure of the London Studio and Japan Studio, but like... those teams' best works were clearly behind them, and they hadn't done anything in YEARS
@@WeeWeeJumbo I had to look at Wikipedia page about London Studio, and I was like, "does anyone actually give a s#!t about their karaoke games and 2 PSVR games nowadays?"
@@funkymonk255 What did the european market do? You mean abandon the game? That would be on us, the gamers, not on Sony. The point I made was not about the commercial success or failure of the game, but on how Sony or Xbox handle a difficult development phase of one of their studios.
Tango was on the chopping block. They lost a lot of talent, including Shinji Mikami, a year earlier, Ghostwire Tokyo released, and it flopped that sealed their fate their best works are far behind them. People don't understand the concept of cutting losses.
People forget Sony pulled back in the later half of the Ps3 life cycle cause they were willing to foster talent. Uncharted 1 was by numbers was a failure for them. Instead of closing them down, we got Uncharted 2 and the rest of the series was spectacular. Then Naughty Dog made Last of Us which was a critical hit. Imagine being shut down just because of one failure. Tango didn't even fail, Microsoft failed it
The funny thing is Tango never had bad games to begin with. Evil within 1 is a masterpiece that is better than most resident evil games. They dont care if they are good games. They only care if they can still monitize them after people buy them
it is because they never wanted tango. They wanted zenimax and their ip. The big play is utilizing the ridiculous advantage they have with the cloud and online gameplay with gamepass and the microsoft ecosystem to crush the competition. The ftc should never have allowed the merger (with activision) because as high speed internet spreads microsoft's true dominance will show its face. As shown by the boeing shenanigans, the american competition bureaus are too jingositic and easily bought to stop that merger, even with the government's anti-big tech bias. A true gaming monopoly is coming by 2035 at the latest.
how can any company compete with a top 3 cloud provider (and not 3) that also has the most profitable franchises in history? Unlike what ppl allege microsoft is too competent and has deep pockets. I don't see how they lose the long game. Has anybody tried to play online on nintendo? As much as ppl love zelda and mario, if the japanese and american anti competitve bureaus would allow it then microsoft would try to buy them out too. In the future, Why play on an underpowered switch 3 when you can use your phone's 5g to play the newest zelda that was designed from the ground up to take advantage of at least a mid-budget nvidia card from the 7000s series? (controls might be the only problem).

Good leadership is taking a pay cut when you're at the top to prevent from having to fire people, like Satori Iwata did back in the day when Nintendo was struggling. Phill Spencer is a coward. Incredible first video by the way!
Not trying to cast rain on an obviously good thing, but I think people over-estimate Nintendo’s willingness to do that as execs taking pay cuts, or other wise taking responsibility for bad decisions, is standard in Japanese business culture. Almost Every company does it. If anything it would be strange for them not to do it. It’s very possible that if they didn’t take pay cuts then they would have suffered domestically as their business would only have gotten worse and fewer businesses would want to work with them.
I'm convinced Hi-Fi Rush was quietly released because MS didn't believe in the game nor the studio. It sucks that even after proving themselves with one of the best releases of 2023, MS still didn't GAF.
And they apparantly were right if only 3 million people played it on Gamepass. Only 10% of subsribers were willing to try it even though it comes free with their subscription? This game, however fun and creative it might be, should not take five years to make. That's just crazy.
@@alexk9295 The game was developed by a skeleton crew the first few years. It wasn't until the end of development that the game got a bigger team to finish fleshing it out. Halo Infinite was a total flop. Should 343 get shuttered? That game was in development hell for 7 years and didn't even release in the scope that was originally envisioned for it because they were forced to figure out how to convert it to a Live Service. Most games are lucky to get that much attention upon release, let alone past release with accolades and awards. That last fact alone should've been enough to keep Tango around. If those numbers were such a failure, why port it to PS5?!?! It makes sense to port the games you expect to do well. Also, this game was stealth dropped. No marketing, no nothing. That 3 million was organic engagement. Also, do you actually believe all Gamepass subscribers play every single game released? 10% is a pretty good chunk of people regardless.
@@lammyjammer6670 yeah, 343 should have been shut down, or Halo should move to some other studio. There should definitely be consequences for runnng your flagship franchise into the ground. Call the 3 million what you want. It is very low engagement no matter how you spin it. It is your most succesful and well received game in a long time and only 10% checks it out? Even if it wasn't specifically marketed, everyone was and still is talking about it and I'm sure there would have been ads on the Gamepass dashboard/store. Also, do you think MS just shuts down the studio of their best received game out of the blue. They must have had their reasons don't you think? Too many of the talented people left, game way over budget, etc.
@@alexk9295 Halo turned out that way because MS executives wanted it to become a Live Service game last minute. A lot of resources had to be diverted to doing that instead of finishing what was planned. This is on top of the game being restarted a few times up to that point. Materially speaking, 3 million unique players of engagement on a ghost dropped game is solid performance. Also that was announced at some point shortly after release so it's very likely it was a much higher number than that. MS also publicly announced the game was a success by all their measurements shortly after it was released (this was even before it received awards, etc) and was willing to devote even more resources AFTER IT DROPPED to port it over to OTHER platforms. If the game turned out to be such a failure, none of that would've happened. Shutting down Tango Gameworks makes absolutely no sense my dude. NONE.
@@lammyjammer6670 porting a game from Xbox to PS is relatively cheap nowadays. They basically have the same parts. So why do you think MS shut the studio down? You think they just flipped a coin and used or made a random decision?
@@Freelancer837 I have a hard disagree on that. Their games still come out with the same level of quality as they had back in the PS3 and PS2 era, on a timely fashion and has one of the best work ethics at the industry (in contrast to the insane levels of crunch they used to have back in the 2000s). Their only recent “fumble” in my opinion is the newest spider man game, mostly in regards to over budgeting, but even that managed to get a game of the year nomination.

Yeah, and it is still possible that if they did make a small team.. they could "partner" with Xbox to gain access to the Hi-Fi Rush IP to make a sequel It's just now for that to be even possible it's going to be at least a decade
I said it on other videos. Microsoft wanted Gamepass to become as ubiquitous as Netflix and Uber so that once it was a standard they’d start raising prices and offering tiers and when that didn’t happen and they had to account for their massive buyout of Activison, they can’t afford it now and it bit them in the ass. This is the worst management of a console since the Dreamcast and at least the DC had cool, unique games.
They can afford it Microsoft is a 3 trillion dollar corporation. The plastic box market is on its last legs software sales are what matter not hardware sales always remember that. An important thing to note is the mobile market is bigger and growing than the console market in the near future branded plastic boxes will be obsolete the data is out there you can see it for yourself. Xbox as a publisher is doing just fine their recent games showcase proves it but yeah its much easier to bash and say big company bad ignoring nuance and logic
@@Legion849 You're making 0 sense. What do you even mean by 'plastic box market'? Is that supposed to be physical media(sounds like what this should mean)? The console market(what makes contextual sense based on the rest of your post)? Something else entirely? What does the mobile market have to do with this discussion, or with X-Box for that matter? Also, yes, Microsoft itself is a 3 trillion dollar mega corporation, however the X-Box division is just that, a single division within that mega corporation. The X-Box division doesn't have 3 trillion dollars, nor Microsoft for that matter(that number is market evaluations, which are strictly on paper, not actual available cash to spend but that's neither here nor there). Lastly what does any of this have to do with this this video?
this is why indie games are becoming bigger and bigger, compared to earlier time when the focus was all on the AAA titles. At that time, the studios with a lot of money were the ones that could innovate and would do so to sell more. Nowadays tho, it’s easier for them to stick to what makes money, since creating masterpieces will probably end up getting them less money than just realeasing a new CoD. So now we basically depend on indie studios to come up with creative and actually good games.
Lethal Company outselling Call of Duty despite being PC only and $60 cheaper is a scorching badge of shame we should never ever let Activision/Xbox/AAA gaming live down.
Microsoft always wanted Halo to be a yearly franchise like Madden was and now Call of Duty. I remember when Halo 2 was delayed 20 years ago the executives at Xbox couldn’t understand that video games were a creative art form and took time to create. Now they have their cash cow!
Microsoft and TFB are working together and Microsoft won't have them on the payroll, and won't have to pay to keep them working in a high cost building.
@@VonTaylan during a tour of the rare office Microsoft suits saw all the pictures of DK on their walls,(since Nintendo let them work on a few DK games)and assumed that it was one of the IPs they would get if they bought the studio.
Yes and we should all believe it, bc a friend at the bar that my uncle goes to said it. Dude ms is a huge company, i think they would do the tiniest amount of research before buying a studio. Knowing what ip’s a studio controlls is top priority for these kinds of things. But keep spouting nonsense ^^.
MS has always wanted the IPs and not the studios or people making them. MS can just farm out the IPs to low pay third party studios or contractors and just sit back and make money. Remember, they have done this before. They own the MS Flight Sim IP and back in 2008/9 they closed down the original studio that made the game and fired all the devs. Around 10 years later they hired Asobo Studio to make a new Flight Sim and it released in 2020 and it was a huge success. MS will eventually do that to all their new studios and publishers. The MS execs want to make all the money they spent back and they want it not today or tomorrow but last month. They will milk everything like crazy.
No shit Sherlock stating the obvious EA, Ubsioft and every other publisher does the same thing. EA has a site dedicated to how many studies they bought and shut down
^ such a burst of toxicity, the problem is, EA and Ubi didn't spent basically 80 Billion dollars buying 2 giant publishers then closes a bunch of their studios despite saying they won't (ArkaneAustin) and despite one of them just released a critical hit title. Did EA and Ubi did any of that you dummy? Nice "balancing" try.
one thing I disagree with : you'll always find a good creative. Maybe not at microsoft or Sony, certainly not today, but thoses people will always be here. Studios are just shells and a shell can be discarded.
I was in Walmart to get a new controller since mine was broken beyond repair and I saw someone unironically buying the newest COD. I felt so sad after that.
Sounds silly but I don't think I'll ever get over Tango getting shut down, this was a studio that could adapt to any generas that not many studios could pull. Making so many good games, The evil within, Ghostwire tokyo, Hi-Fi rush. Mircrosoft never wanted fun games, they wanted the big brands that brought the big bucks.
At this point, being a gamer for Xbox is nothing but a mistake for many. They don't care about games anymore and they certainly never recovered from 2013 either. They are a shadow of their former selves being tossed into the Ether with no sign of coming back.
I've known for years that Phil Spencer was another corporate suit, and for that I've been called a "Sony pony" despite having it be known how much I dislike both Sony and Microsoft. Only reason I play on Sony consoles is because I prefer not having to update a PC for every new FFXIV expansion but PC has been looking tempting for a good while now, especially with mods for FFXIV. Microsoft getting FFXIV was historic, and Phil let his greed get the better of him by demanding GamePass for a SUBSCRIPTION-BASED GAME. People blamed the FFXIV team for that which is the saddest part, because longtime players know how great that team is. They're one of the few game teams that listen to the community. People even defend Microsoft after the shutdown of Tango Gameworks saying how Sony ponies are still worse. My brother in Christ, you LOST a fantastic studio that pumped out banger games for Bugthesda and a company with multiple sexual harassment accusations under their belt. That ain't a victory, its a loss. Not to mention that 343 exists but I know they're hated for ruining Halo. We live in strange times, I swear

Why would you upgrade your PC for every FF expansion? That's not how it works, you can very well outlast the next console generation with a good PC for its time
@@eW91dHViZSBpcyBjZW5zb3JzaGlw A Switch would work too. For all the hate Nintendo gets for how they handle their IPs, the Switch has good titles. I don't care about specs unless my games run inconsistently.
When MW1 was released just a few months after Halo 3, I knew there would be a shift in the minds of Microsoft execs. Not to mention they saw the success of the Wii and wanted to push so hard for a peripheral of their own to beat it. Xbox went from providing fun and interesting games to chasing trends, and I don’t think they’ll ever learn from their mistakes…
Yep, most of the later Halo games are literally just call of duty rip offs. I downloaded halo infinite and omg it did not have a smidge of personality or charm of the original games. Just an item shop, tons of microtransactions and a blatant attempt at being COD
I said that when I first heard about MS acquiring Act/Blizz, they wanted Candy Crush and COD, I wouldn't be surprised if MS eventually move away from hardware to software only with an app built into Tell-A-Visions but outsourced to another corporate entity. I can really see MS going that route with an app, you just plug a controller into your TV and access it via the app. This will cancel out allot of regions due to poor networks but with Sony latest decision to not even worry about 180 regions for Helldivers and Ghosts obviously they don't care so why would it bother MS?. They would rather keep a few games going live service cut the rest of development costs and keep the moola running in with macros and passes. Game pass isn't profitable but an app where you own majority of dev houses forcing them to make games for your app only really puts it into perspective what MS are trying to do here. Even Epic Games said their business model isn't profitable since most PC gamers loath Epic's launcher and Epic itself, Fortnite keeps Epic afloat and Unreal Engine. How Epic differs from MS is MS flexed out and bought so many studios and have the means to force everyone onto their app by owning majority of the studios. Nvidia did something similar with Geforce Now which actually works quite well because my friend used it for 6 months before building his own gaming PC, a subscription based gaming service is where we are headed. Stadia failed due to making people rebuy their games again but where stadia failed MS will shine with Game Pass. How do I take all this? Well I don't like it one bit, I come from a time when you bought a game got the full game and a finished game so these passes and macros are obscene to me personally not to mention the bugged out console ports we get on PC with some of the games not even running properly on consoles. Seems like a push to remove property ownership in all forms going on here, that's what it looks like to me. Is what it is though, I'll keep playing the games I play till they push everyone on a service platform and when that day comes its time to touch grass Bro.
Welcome to the future envisioned by Bill Gates and his friends. "YOU WILL OWN NOTHING AND YOU WILL BE HAPPY ABOUT IT!!! we on the other hand will own everything and truly be happy about it..."
First of all, this is absolutely phenomenal video with amazing production values. If this is your first video then I really hope and you should have a bright future ahead of you on this platform. What's so interesting as a gamer that grew up primarily in the '90s is that while Pokémon has its problems, we expected Nintendo to do this when Pokémon took off but they didn't. As you said, I think that's the difference between a toy company that values its IPS and tries to thus grow and nurture them thus diversifying their portfolio and thus creating a strong raw chest of both money and clout and accompany that is constantly chasing trends and mutilating itself in order to gamble on the slim idea that something will take off.
Probably a reflection of internal company culture as well. A common reason in broadcast television days for a show to be suddenly moved to the wrong time slot for its audience was that the person now in charge of the show was new and so they couldn't claim responsibility for its continued success - while deliberately killing it made room for something all their own. Greater internal risk often leads to taking greater external risks.
Now they're opening a new studio called Elsewhere Entertainment. Remember when they opened The Initiative, but had to outsource Perfect Dark to Chrystal Dynamics???
the worst part about studio shutdowns like this is that the game gets locked behind xbox, not the people who composed tango. so they cant make hi fi rush 2 even if they have everything in place for it.
To all of the COD shill sobbing were crying how they were now getting all the wins and Sony were in tears, remember Call of Duty doesn't make as much as Candy Crush and money is the only think Micosft understands.
The Tango team deserved more than what they got. They created something that is a great example of how video games are art. And what did they get for it: An email saying that despite this game getting multiple awards, it’s not going to infinity make money so the shareholders can buy a third private jet. Or some rich person BS like that.
i really feel like them shutting down would mark the beginning of the end. id kinda invented FPS games, and pioneered a ton of systems & code for shit that's still used in modern engines to this day, while Obsidian kinda redefined western RPGs and helped them become more mainstream.
Cause they eat the same slop and have no intelligible thoughts? It’s like people like gta online. Anyone with a brain would have realize the franchise peaked at black ops 2
Those are your typical normie. They buy a console and the employee shills them two games: CoD slop and some sports slop. Poor game store has to move these thousands of copies being shoved down their throat SOMEHOW. Normie takes it home plays a few times and then forgets about it. Only picking it back up if it's the same game their friends happen to be playing. Usually CoD because M$ knows normies have to keep up appearances lest they appear "uncool". None of them are exposed to the magic of innovative games like Hi-Fi. So they end up jaded about gaming, imagining it to be ONLY CoD and sport slop. And there are billions of these normie types. It's sad.

Let's be unbiased and truthful. As an Xbox player, besides probably not renewing my gold, I wouldn't consider Sony any better, not at all with Stellar Blade, Helldivers 2 fiasco, and Ghosts of Tushima. @martyden9006 hmmm nintendo taking anything that has their ip even for things like people playing their games and sony making thousands of people not being able to play their games. But I guess xbox is worse. (That was sarcasm)
@Thedill2020 give and take. I'd rather support a company with a direction and that actually makes an effort to support their decs, versus a company that only sees video games as something that makes a quick buck and disregards the talent necessary to make them.
Call Of Duty hasn't been on my shopping list since the PlayStation 3, COD Mobile was good the last time I played. The HiFi Rush team deserve better. The Microsoft plan to sell me digital games hasn't worked, just compare game prices on the Microsoft Store versus Steam. I can play Xbox games on Geforce Now, I have hundreds of Steam games, the Microsoft Store can't convince me to make a single purchase.
Not sure if you noticed that Hi-Fi Rush was on sale up until the announcement of Tango's closure and has since gone on extended sale on PSN. I can't help but feel like Microsoft is actively fucking around and playing games because they know full well as us in the know that Tango won't see a dime of the sales and taking advantage of the situation where everybody is now out to try the game. With all the licensed music in the game too, it's definitely primed for delisting. Absolutely shambolic all around. I'm not even that happy to have bought the game on sale since it's just depresses me knowing this is that company's last game and the circumstances behind it.
What happens when the business becomes more important than the work (art and creativity)? This is why I try to support small dev teams with less tyrannical publishing. I definitely stay away from overly monetized games. Vote with your wallets. F*ck Microsoft. It's not enough they own your machines. They gotta produce what you like too. What we build and make should matter. What we produce should mean something to you. In business it doesn't.
I guarantee you if Gamepass didn't exist HiFi Rush would absolutely be getting a sequel right now and Tango would be seen as one of Microsoft's most valuable studios, since you know... people would have actually bought it.
I doubt it. Shutting down studios and consolidating others is pretty common in such a huge corporation. Other than Hi-Fi rush Tango hadn't done much since evil within. It's a little weird, I'll give you that.
I'd like to imagine the reason Tango Studios got shut down despite HFR winning an award at GOTY 2023 is because Microsoft was hoping Starfield would bring in all of the awards... only for a cult classic from one of their subsidiaries to win something while their favorite child won _nothing._
They did the same with arcane my favourite game studio. I wont get prey 2😭 I will never forget what they did with arcane and tango I wanted a hifi rush 2.Tango was also pitching for a sequel. I will never forget or forgive them for what they did.
Genuinely Hi-Fi rush was the game needed for the industry and that scared MS, like you said they make much more off of things like COD where you’re constantly and consistently pumping money into The same applies to almost every game now, live service updates, DLC’s but Hi-FI rush is so beautiful, i genuinely hold it in my mind as a PS2 game, something that’s Simple and fun, something you pop in and play and have a genuinely great time from start to finish, I don’t want every new game to have 10 yr development, pushing my consoles fidelity to the moon just to count the amount of stress marks a character has, I don’t want another PVP live service shooter, the industry wants Games like Hi-fi rush, something simple and great cause it was made with being a video game in mind and not a cash cow
That was the best I've seen the whole debacle summed up. My own personal hope is more Indy developers start rejecting the Microsoft's and the Sony's. I'd rather a game take 5 years and release as a full game then another boring call of duty or an ea game, that releases unfinished with a bucket load of microtransaction nonsense. Manor lords for game of the year :)
You can't say that Sony is equally as bad as Microsoft, bc it's not true. Sony invests in the studios it works with and provides them with a lot of resources, both marketing and technology, so they can succeed. Microsoft does not contribute anything to these projects and is much less lenient when it comes to valuing the projects they manage.
I think one of Roquefort’s quotes sums up Xbox the best. “I don’t care about passion,I care about profits!” That quote entirely sums up Xbox and most big corporations, who drop passionate and actually good games, for games that have gone past their primes and are now just a soulless cash grab for the most part.
I genuinely don't understand how people worship Microsoft and Xbox. I play on Playstation. There's no way in hell I'd white knight them like I see people do for both sides. It's so weird.
Loving your content. Videos like this help me come to terms with what i’ve been feeling and why gaming as a hobby just doesn’t do it for me anymore. Great video
it used to be that Developers would want to be seen by Microsoft and Sony so they could get a stable income for the studio, but now the only reason to be "acquired" is if you want to kill your studio because you have been made to either only make Live service hero shooters with a shop or you fail to make triple the budget given and everyone is fired for it
Make no mistake the shop part is always complete without bugs even if the game is ridden by bugs and incomplete. This enshitification will mark their end.
Microsoft be like: NOOOO, I WANT MEDIOCRE COMPANIES, I WANT MEDIOCRE GAMES, I WANT ONLY FAILURES AND KEEP LOSING FOR THE NEXT GENERATIONS, I WANT TO DUMP ALL MY MONEY TO 343i, NONSTOP.
Considering that Xbox aka MS don’t allow any games unless there is parity with the S. I’ve had Xbox and PS for a long time. But now, I haven’t touched my Xbox in YEARS. To the point where I’m actually thinking of putting it in a box because I just don’t use it and it’s just taking up space. Sure there are games I have for the Xbox but with numerous games coming to PS, what’s the point? If they came out with releasing all of the Halo games to PS, I’d buy it in an instant. But I just don’t care enough to use my Xbox for anything. I honestly think game pass is the worst mistake Xbox has ever done. You can’t be profitable when all of your games are there for FREE. Shutting down The devs of HiFi because their sales projections didn’t pan out is entirely on Xbox. The only Xbox branded name did good, even better than Starfield imo. Zenimax screwed themselves bad.
They're not exactly free. The whole point of a subscription to guarantee revenue in a consistent manner. Gamepass takes away the risk of games not selling as well (which is ironic under current circumstances). The real thing that's knee capping revenue is having their stuff in the service 0-Day. Sony understood this early on and that's why they don't do it and even so, PS Plus Extra is still amazing value. I don't know if MS is hellbent on standing by that decision to the point that they're willing shut down the rest of the farm to maintain it but that's the one decision they could change that could massively improve their balance sheet. By staggering first-party releases into the service, they make money upfront in regular sales and then continue making money off the game after they integrate it into the subscription in the long term. Sony has the model right and that's probably why they took their time coming out with it.
@@lammyjammer6670 Gamepass also makes it easier to get rid of games, just as a subscription service for television makes it easier to dump shows from their library. While there are several advantages to this from the perspective of the subscription service, I think the greatest lure is the potential to move customers away from a product whose success doesn't personally benefit the career of somebody who can influence the available library to a product that does.
@@lammyjammer6670 I have Xbox fanboys telling me Microsoft got a bottomless amount of money to burn on Xbox division. Lol. None of them think like a shareholder.
I want to preface this by saying, Microsoft was still stupid for closing Tango, it was the one studio you COULDN'T close, but there's a little bit more going on here than Microsoft not caring about talent and just wanting COD. Most people who say things like "Microsoft doesn't care about talent, they just wanted COD!" Turned on Hi-Fi Rush, played it for 5 minutes and then went back to playing COD. A majority of Hi-Fi players didn't even reach the first boss and very few people finished it. And this is what's never taken into account in analysis like this. People SAY they want a single player game with no micros and no live service but when they come out, they either dont play them, shit on them, or most likely both, and then go back to fifa or AC or COD. Most people don't *actually* play the games they say they want and most people who decry live service games only play live service games. Again, Microsoft is still stupid for closing Tango but the fault here is not in our stars but in our selves.
Xbox's Gamepass is to blame for this, as it greatly conditions the mentality of its users and their relationship with video games. One of the things it impacts negatively in my opinion is to create an audience that does not invest time in any game. It's like a free buffet where they try everything until they are full, but they don't have to fill up with something decent, it's enough with something that fills them up (usually competitive games with microtransactions). This clashes with games like Hi-Fi Rush, because people don't see an incentive to try such games, because they have stopped playing for entertainment. Instead, we see how PlayStation users spend much more time playing than Xbox users, even if the game comes from Xbox Game Studios.
The shadow drop of Hi-Fi Rush in retrospect doesn't seem to have been due to confidence. I believe Microsoft made the decision to close Tango Studios before the game came out and didn't want to spend money on advertising.
Your video was amazing! The most complete video I saw here on the whole UA-cam. I'm grateful for you to make all this effort to make us understand this whole sad situation. Hi-Fi Rush and Ghostwire Tokyo were the most fun I had in gaming last year, Tango was an amazing studio what they did to them was so low and scummy, made me lost all my faith in Xbox. I'm considering cancelling my GamePass subscription, the only thing that still maintain me there is Persona 3 Reload (sadly this game is soooo expansive). Once again thanks for this amazing video!
The part about leaders reminded me about the time Nintendo's CEO Satoru Iwata (RIP) took a 50% pay cut after the failure of the Wii U in order to avoid having to lay off devs. That's the kind of leadership absolutely NONE of these studios have, but badly need.
Best commentary I have heard yet on the fiasco that is now XBOX, its entire front office and its shareholders. What does John Johanas do now? Does he still have copies of the source code for _Hi-Fi Rush?_ Did he have plans for a sequel before Micro$oft killed Tango? Does he have devs (especially those who worked with him on HFR) who are ready to go wherever he goes? He should either start up a new and _totally_ independent studio himself, or take his plans to a well-established indie studio (like Supergiant, creators of the _HADES_ saga), and get to work on _Hi-Fi Rush 2!_ In 4 or 5 years, he, his HFR devs and maybe the _HADES_ devs could have another GOTY candidate in HFR 2; and he can tell M$ to kiss his ass, while the XBOX team prepares to disband and the console goes the way of the Sega Dreamcast! ☠️👍
If Microsoft wants to go all in on streaming the why did they entered the console market in the first place? They already own Windows, the most used OS, they already owned the PC platform. Manufacturing hardware is expensive, we know, then just stop making X-boxes and release all your games on Windows.
They want to always own everything, they want to always compete, they want to have the title of everything so you must always not ask for any other corp.
Iwata still stands on his own when it comes to videogame CEOs. He actually fought for the people that worked for him, even was willing to cut his own salary back during the Wii U days when they were doing really poorly financially, in order to ensure none of his employees had to take a hit. All this because he worked his way up from being a game developer himself, so he wanted to make sure his people didn't have to go through the same hardships he did when he was developing.
Nintendo is almost as bad as Microsoft tbh. They have some of the most recognizable franchises and most of them with the exception of breath of the wild have not changed or evolved. Pokémon for example is one of those call of duty like franchises that is copy and pasted every couple of years to sell millions of dollars. They could try something new with the franchise but nah always the same game with more bugs every generation.
@@Guava11534eh at least they frickin’ MAKE games. Worst part about Nintendo in reality is that their copyright policy is a complete pain in the booty hole. Like actual “we hate our fans so much” crap. Pokemon is rancid no doubt, and it shouldn’t be the bad one given how damn popular it is. (although as someone that never played a single pokemon game ever i don’t care that much personally lol) but every other franchise still makes games and at worst they’re mid and at best they’re still excellent. And they still all innovate enough to tick the needle forward each time, while not caring too much about short term, shareholder wowing profit to ONLY take years making super omega big games. Honestly the switch being a relatively low-power console only really works to their benefit. Cuz like, it takes ALOT to make a current gen exclusive for the other consoles, and for some reason xbox wants parity with their previous gen anyways. Hence we literally only see like… 2 ps5 exclusive games a year?… maybe less than that? And god forBID it the Xbox One X even HAS an exclusive, i honestly can’t tell you. I’m not even all that happy that Nintendo is just so much better mind you, i’m a bit bitter how poor the selection is on my ps5 too.
@@Guava11534it's crazy how badly you're talking out of your ass. just in every single way. to say Nintendo is almost as bad as Microsoft is actually asinine Saying their franchises have not changed or evolved. Mario and Zelda speak for themselves. Pikmin 4 isn't the same as 3 and is considered the best game now. Kirby and the forgotten Land quite literally did things the series has never done before. Warioware Get It Together was a completely different style of WarioWare. Xenoblade is constantly being nurtured. you can't even call 1 the same game as 3. Metroid Dread. Literally just Metroid Dread. New Horizons isn't the same concept as New Leaf. they literally rebooted advance wars and made game builder garage, ring fit adventure, completely new games. like, of course you mention Pokémon because it's the one franchise they can't fully control. but even then you're wrong. Legends Arceus pushed the series forward and is a wholly unique entry.
@@GetShrekd maybe you’re right in the fact that Nintendo innovates their games I wouldn’t know and I bet you the majority of gamers wouldn’t know either because those franchises are so minor they feel more like indie games and it doesn’t help that they’re exclusive to the switch. That being said that still doesn’t make Nintendo a good company because the main reason they’re almost as bad as Microsoft is due to the fact they treat their community like shit. The smash community has had it the worst having several grass root tournaments shut down due to the bs rules they forced those tournaments to run. It just seems malicious to go after your community and try and nickle and dime them for trying to get together and play your game. Also while arceus does look interesting it’s a spin off game people want their mainline Pokémon games to actually be creative, to change things up, other than the same three type of starters every gen, harder difficulty, and better end game content.
@@Guava11534 first. learn what a paragraph is. holy shit. also no shit Nintendo does anti consumer things. no one is happy with this and no one will praise Nintendo for being the cool guy. "oh the majority of gamers wouldnt know the difference between installments" no bro, YOU don't know and are projecting that onto the whole install base. entirely new types of games aren't "minor" when its the entire selling point. Xenoblade 3's reception was massively different to 2's because again, it doesn't have the same tone in story or character. Forgotten Land is a 3D platformer, Star Allies is 2D. People with eyes can tell the difference. Astral Chain is a completely different combat system to anything else out there. Mario Wonder adds a new gimmick and game mechanic every 2 seconds and transformed the New style to the point it's not the same. Could literally go on and on. These "indie" games have sold millions upon millions and have outdone both Microsoft and Sony's own offerings. also im like... actually fully convinced now that you know nothing about what you're talking about and are just on some bandwagon. Arceus isn't a spinoff. it is mainline. SC/VI are unpolished, but they did exactly what you wanted them to by letting you challenge everything in a non-linear manner + Area Zero. You would know that the last 2 Pokemon games have actively changed the formula, if again, you actually played the games Nintendo was publishing.
Im scared that moving foward companies will stop caring about talent and passion. And instead in just keeping games that people can continue to monitize with battlepasses etz after the game is bought

"anime waifu or gritty fortnite sir?"
The funny thing is Tango never had bad games to begin with. Evil within 1 is a masterpiece that is better than most resident evil games. They dont care if they are good games. They only care if they can still monitize them after people buy them
it is because they never wanted tango. They wanted zenimax and their ip.

We live in strange times, I swear
dude, get a pc. i havent upgraded my pc and i have a rtx3080 and a r9 3500k and i can make 14 run at 8k upscaled to 30 fps.
plus i have mods on my copy of 14. ditch consoles. they are a scam.

Triple A is dead. The indie scene is a thriving haven of innovation and creativity.
We can never get nice things from the gaming industry anymore and on the rare occasion we do, shit like this happens. What a fucking joke.
This is why indie games are capable of outselling AAA ones now.
Now they're opening a new studio called Elsewhere Entertainment. Remember when they opened The Initiative, but had to outsource Perfect Dark to Chrystal Dynamics???
Elsewhere is a fitting name because we all know all the employees at that studio will be going elsewhere when they get shuttered by Microsoft too.
the worst part about studio shutdowns like this is that the game gets locked behind xbox, not the people who composed tango. so they cant make hi fi rush 2 even if they have everything in place for it.
i didn't even realize this was your first video. lol its great i thought you had way more videos and been doing this for years. Great video Chief
Thank you!! Will be trying my hand at more in the future.
To all of the COD shill sobbing were crying how they were now getting all the wins and Sony were in tears, remember Call of Duty doesn't make as much as Candy Crush and money is the only think Micosft understands.
Fun fact, the Japanese VA for the final boss is DIO’s ( Jojo’ Bizarre Adventure ) and Zeke Yeager’s ( Attack on Titan )Japanese VA
The Tango team deserved more than what they got. They created something that is a great example of how video games are art. And what did they get for it: An email saying that despite this game getting multiple awards, it’s not going to infinity make money so the shareholders can buy a third private jet. Or some rich person BS like that.
I said it before and I'll say it again. ID software and Obsidian is just one shareholders report (Good or bad) away from shutting down.
i really feel like them shutting down would mark the beginning of the end.
id kinda invented FPS games, and pioneered a ton of systems & code for shit that's still used in modern engines to this day, while Obsidian kinda redefined western RPGs and helped them become more mainstream.
Whenever someone says they're a fan of Call of Duty my eyes just glaze over.
Cause they eat the same slop and have no intelligible thoughts? It’s like people like gta online. Anyone with a brain would have realize the franchise peaked at black ops 2
Don't hate the player, hate the game company
you arent special for not liking cod .
Fucking weird to brag about something so mundane
It's sad.
I used to think like this but now I think you guys are just as big of losers as well
I feel REALLY bad for everyone at Tango Gameworks
I can't believe Hi-Fi Rush was given The Metal Arms Treatment

Xbox will continue clowning Xbox users so long as the fans allow it.
fourteen years since they started being garbage and the fans have swallowed everything whole. why should Xbox stop now?
Let's be unbiased and truthful. As an Xbox player, besides probably not renewing my gold, I wouldn't consider Sony any better, not at all with Stellar Blade, Helldivers 2 fiasco, and Ghosts of Tushima.
I'd recommend not buying from Sony, or Microsoft. Both are doing their best to show everyone how much they despise their userbases.
@@christianedwards9025nice console war try my guy, but buying from Sony or Nintendo is still alot better than xbox, at least sony and nintendo has a clear direction unlike xbox that lost HARD tried to cope with gamepass... lost HARD again, and now their only solution is buy and screw developers.
@@martyden9006not really, I remember buying the first two seasons of Rick and Morty when they were on sale for my PS4, and when they finally made it so you couldn't buy movies or TV anymore it literally just deleted random episodes in both seasons!

This was your first video!? Dude you have a talent, I was engaged the whole time

I will never forget what they did with arcane and tango
I wanted a hifi rush 2.Tango was also pitching for a sequel.
I will never forget or forgive them for what they did.
Genuinely Hi-Fi rush was the game needed for the industry and that scared MS, like you said they make much more off of things like COD where you’re constantly and consistently pumping money into
The same applies to almost every game now, live service updates, DLC’s but Hi-FI rush is so beautiful, i genuinely hold it in my mind as a PS2 game, something that’s Simple and fun, something you pop in and play and have a genuinely great time from start to finish,
I don’t want every new game to have 10 yr development, pushing my consoles fidelity to the moon just to count the amount of stress marks a character has, I don’t want another PVP live service shooter, the industry wants Games like Hi-fi rush, something simple and great cause it was made with being a video game in mind and not a cash cow
Sony and Microsoft don't have parity here, at all
You can't say that Sony is equally as bad as Microsoft, bc it's not true.
“I don’t care about passion,I care about profits!”
That quote entirely sums up Xbox and most big corporations, who drop passionate and actually good games, for games that have gone past their primes and are now just a soulless cash grab for the most part.
Look at metal hellsinger. It was perfect. Games can be amazing but there has to be passion and no corporate suit screwing the hole thing up!
This is why I’m proud to be an Indie gamer, even near limitless funding can’t compensate for the creative bankruptcy of modern AAA games
That "line must go up" mentality is honestly tiring
Micro$oft basically told people who bought into the Xbox platform that they don't matter, only profits matter.
I genuinely don't understand how people worship Microsoft and Xbox. I play on Playstation. There's no way in hell I'd white knight them like I see people do for both sides. It's so weird.
Sony ain’t nowhere far from Microsoft’s greed. They have learned the ways with Game Pass and everything is a must "you must own nothing".
@@alexnewtron3579Sony does the same shit, look what happened to Gravity rush they only care about AAA cinema games.
I wish the AAA games were more like this.
Nintendo is printing money with regular games not so much live services. Sony and Microsoft: 🤮¡¡NO!! SINGLE PLAYER GAMES ARE NOT THE FUTURE
When did Sony say single player games are not the future? Sony is mostly known for single player games.
I will never buy an xbox product. Soulless company since day 1.
The shadow drop of Hi-Fi Rush in retrospect doesn't seem to have been due to confidence. I believe Microsoft made the decision to close Tango Studios before the game came out and didn't want to spend money on advertising.
Awesome vid! Really hope we get to see more from you
How to say, "Always buy Nintendo" without using those exact words.

The part about leaders reminded me about the time Nintendo's CEO Satoru Iwata (RIP) took a 50% pay cut after the failure of the Wii U in order to avoid having to lay off devs. That's the kind of leadership absolutely NONE of these studios have, but badly need.
Alternative title: "Game Publishers Don't Want Talent. They Want Microtransactions."
Buddy just wanted to talk about how much he likes Hi-Fi Rush
This is one reason I stick to the Nintendo side of gaming
@@Guava11534it's crazy how badly you're talking out of your ass. just in every single way. to say Nintendo is almost as bad as Microsoft is actually asinine
Saying their franchises have not changed or evolved.
It also doesn't make their game output bad.
second of all? what the fuck kind of an argument is that?
In the world of business, profit matters the most. If it's not profitable then it's not needed. Talent is secondary.
Im scared that moving foward companies will stop caring about talent and passion. And instead in just keeping games that people can continue to monitize with battlepasses etz after the game is bought
