I thought I knew this case pretty well, but I was unaware of the earlier case where she took a child without permission (which is kidnapping) and the child returned drugged with muscle relaxers. A Google search tells me that the drug found in her system was actually a benzodiazepine… like alprazolam. I can’t find a source which documents exactly what the drug was beyond “a benzodiazepine”, but it’s suspicious that Sandra was drugged with the same class of drugs. I don’t understand how there was nothing she could be charged with in that case. That child had been reported missing , so the police were aware and involved from the get go. The child was taken to the hospital so quickly that to suggest it had been anyone but Huckaby would be laughable - if her parents had drugged her it would be too soon to level it in the blood properly. It’s not like you swallow a pill and it’s there. The child herself said the only thing she had ingested (that she could recall) was a cup of water Huckaby got her at McDonalds, and she began to feel sick and fuzzy within minutes - typical in cases where a pill is ground and dissolved - and had no memory of events shortly afterwards. Additionally, were those same things reported while she was in custody of a male who did not have permission to take her, there certainly would have been a SANE exam and interview. Knowing what we know now, I have to question if the motive was truly attention or if she was drugging little girls with a sexual motivation. I believe she is a pedophile in all likelihood, and I would be difficult to sway with the evidence before us. Attention seeking was certainly *a* motive, but I think discrediting the likelihood that sexual gratification was *the* is shortsighted and informed by her gender.
My thoughts exactly. She would not have shown up on a local state sex offender registry either. Always check your potential neighbors before renting a place, especially is the lower price ranges. Sex offenders aren't usually terribly well off..the ones that get caught early on.
Coming from a local Tracy resident early on in the case I thought the same exact thing, because early on it was noted that after the perpetrator was revealed it was suggested that she had done this before and had history of drugging little girls. Excellent work Dr Grande. You make an excellent point about jumping to conclusions or tunnel vision. I watch a show on ID about a very successful detective from Colorado, Joe Kenda. I believe one of the reasons he was so very successful at closing murder investigation is because he did NOT ever assume he knew who was guilty from the beginning of a case. He followed the evidence. Of course he’s intelligent and seems to be able to read people too which also helps a lot. I hope more officers follow that way of investigating, it seems jumping to conclusions often leads to cold cases.
Hello Dr. Grande, you explained this case professionally, very well done. I always struggle and have a hard time with crimes that involve children. Therefore I do not have any comments on this case, but thank you for sharing with us Best Regards. 👍❤
My youngest just turned 8 this month. No way I’d ever let her run around and not know where she was. No freaking way. She’s never even stayed the night anywhere.
@Ivan Poohbear they didn't live in the safest area, being aware of your surroundings and applying common sense only sounds right. This wouldn't have happened if people realised that the isnt safe for children.
@Livingston Lee You never had kids so you have no idea what you are babbling about You sound jealous that others have kids and you and your wife decided not too for whatever reasons Eight year olds have no business wondering around creepy trailer parks especially with what is going today Are you mad? When you become a parent then come back and let us hear what you have to say This child was not being supervised by anyone No one knew where she was at any given time While you are reading about bear cubs why not read about what happens to children that are not properly supervised ? I think you might want to check on your own issues before trying to analyze someone else and yes if the security expert was on Oprah then that must mean he knows what he is talking about! (Licensee Psychologist MA) 22 years and by the way she is YOUR wife not THE wife ...........
Keep it that way! It's the only way to protect them nowadays. The world is NOT what it used to be! All kinds of monsters crawling around everywhere. So many. As if demons are possessing anyone willing, left and right. God, help us.
Also, I have Huckabee's diagnoses, and this video made me physically ill. Please viewers, don't hate people with these diagnoses because of people who abuse.
Yes, I was surprised that Dr.Grande didn't point out that it is rare for people with schizophrenia to be violent and if properly medicated and treated a person with such diagnoses may have been an appropriate Sunday School teacher and certain not a horrid abuser. Sadly, all the attention goes to the worst cases and not those who valiantly struggle through each day to make a good life.
Watching those last images of Sandra so full of life skipping happily across the street is truly heartbreaking. All the adults in her life failed her,the poor little girl didn’t stand a chance. Thankfully the Sunday school teacher will never be able to harm another child ever again. Another great analysis Dr.G!
I grew up in Tracy where all this happened and it was a traumatic event for the community. At the the time I was in 5th grade and my friend used to have play dates with her. Parents, always keep an eye out on your children.
It just sucks so much that people capable of such an unthinkable act are also able to hide in plain sight until some oblivious innocent victim walks right into their doomed fate. I guess all we can do is try to understand mental health as much as possible. Good thing for Dr. Grande
She brought the note to law enforcement during a vigil for Sandra , we were at the vigil, so we’re probably half the town and surrounding towns of Modesto and Stockton 😢 I swear every large news networks invaded our little town, it was crazy for a while until her body was found 💔
When I was young, there was a man called the 'Red Cap' Man allegedly a rapist, it was the wierdest thing because my mom would keep an eye on us while we played outside in our yard. We were not allowed to leave it, even though at the time, we were surrounded by several playmates and friends who were also our neighbours. Even after 'Red Cap' died, we were never given that freedom. I am surprised that this little girl was allowed to roam freely in a mobile home community to play, even after an 'incident', where she was kissed. So, when it was suspected that "someone" in the community was responsible for Sandra's death, I was not surprised. Society now has shown that children must be protected AT ALL TIMES. Gone are the days in the 70's, 60's and 50's where children could explore for miles... This is a sad story, but it could have been preventable.
Statistics actually show that crimes against kids are lower than in the 70s. They were rare then and they are rare now. I roamed up and down the block as a kid. I let my kid ride his bike around the block now. It’s no less safe. Kids need protection, but they also need freedom so they can gain competence and confidence. It’s a difficult balance.
@@Andreamom001 I believe I hinted that we never lost our freedom, but we were free under the eyes of our mother, a responsible adult. I rode bicycle, motorcycle and can drive a truck.... so..
@@lisamariebonaparte5161 I think when you said "we were never given that freedom" those words overrode any hints you were dropping that implied the opposite. Sounds like you had the freedom of the entire back yard though, which is pretty cool I guess ;)
omg i heard of this case a long time ago :( it was so sad when you mentioned she was born march 2001, same month and year as me :( she would be turning 21 this year if her life wasn’t cut short may she rest in peace
I was living in San Jose, CA when this happened, so it was like home news as it unfolded. There was a cry of WHERE IS SANDRA CANTU? by everyone and in all the newspapers. All of us and everyone kept their eyes open hoping to find her somewhere. The suitcase was NOT found floating in the water (how could it with the weight of the contents?) It was at the bottom of a retention pond and owners decided to drain the pond on that day. Several workers were sent to monitor the draining and as the water got to a low level, one of the workers near the location of the suitcase noticed a black lump in the water- when he realized it was a suitcase, he immediately thought about the missing little girl and notified the other workers. The police were called and the rest is history. There is more that happened in this case that no one ever mentions- which brings another theory that is not mentioned by Dr. Grande, but I believe it is what the true motivation (compulsion, really) was/is. The clue is in the news media shots of people being questioned as they drove into the mobile home park during the beginning search for Sandra Cantu- if only Dr. Grande could watch the GRANDFATHER being questioned as he sat in his car on his way into the park- he then might realize what the new theory could be... women usually don't commit crimes of a sexual nature...unless... oh, you say Melissa's mental problems and depression started when she was in 6th grade? Just a little girl acting out, huh?
Huckaby killed this poor child because she wanted to. It's that simple. People never pretend to not understand that when the perpetrator is a man (and it usually is a man), but for whatever reason when the killer is a woman, people act like it's beyond comprehension that a woman could have the perverse desire to rape and murder a child.
Thank you for another great analysis Dr. Grande. Such a sad and tragic death of a sweet child. 🙏🏻 You made a good point that no child was really safe running around there, and you have to wonder why her family let her run around a 100 trailer park without their supervision.
I remember when this story was in the news. A lot of people were surprised when they found out the murderer was a woman. No one was really surprised with the facts regarding the murderer's connection with the local church. All sorts of monsters make their way into church leadership. I appreciate Dr. Grande for including details that came out after the media lost interest. I remember thinking that someone must have made the murderer into what she was. It seems with sexual abusers that rule from Star Wars applies: as with master and pupil, there are always two.
Love your work, Dr Grande. I’d like to hear your thoughts on Arnold Putra, an Indonesian influencer who is accused of purchasing illegally harvested human organs.
As a parent myself I think it's easy to to take for granted that when you live in a close-knit community with other parents/families that no one around you would be capable of harming your child. This is why I think it's kind of harsh for people to point the finger at parents for not sufficiently protecting their children, as abusers are often experts at hiding who they are. However, at least we now know it's important to be careful no matter how nice your neighbors seem or no matter how safe you think your child is, as we can't really trust anyone.
I lived 20 minutes away from Tracy when this crime took place. I watched it play out on the local news. The fact that it was a woman perpetrator shocked me (as well as many people) to the core. Is there an irony to the fact that in an area filled with potential offenders, she succumbed to the last person anyone would have imagined would hurt her?
I don’t think this is an example of irony. It’s rather an extreme outlier. How often does the Mom and Sunday school teacher next door off her daughter’s playmate? If the police were to start by targeting these people instead of known offenders, it would set crime investigation on its heels. Fortunately in this case, they were able to find the perp and dispense justice.
Thank you, Dr Grande~ So many of your insights truly help me, and surely many others, understand to some degree the inexplicable motives of others in commiting such horrific acts. .
the criminals history was MASSIVE. even before she was suspected by the detectives she was the last one to see Sandra alive... How was she not number one suspect straight away?!?
Egads I read about this case before hitting play ... its so vile my stomach hurts. This is Dr Grande though so I will push play and see if I can stomach this. Okay finished it Thank you Dr Grande for not getting to detailed on the horrifying parts yet still sharing enough. I wonder if there was something from her childhood with drugging that she was replaying. Like the drugging of the other girl and husband was a test run or warm up for the bigger crime. I definitely feel she would have hurt Sandras sister thankful the police intervened.
What a delightful person. I'm pretty sure she is not the only one, walking around in society today. I'm okay with being alone. Always interesting. Thank you. Peace 💕🇺🇲
Thank you for pointing out that the FBI agent's casual profiling of an entire community is unacceptable. Some people are far too ready to tar everyone with the same brush. Now back to the video.
I remember this. Seeing that precious child skipping just brings it all back😢💔 I think her killer was possibly repeating SA she had experienced but I'm not a shrink. Appreciate all your content Doc!!🙌👏👏
This is exactly what I always thought when hearing about profiles. They do fit so often... but they are so well known that anyone can just make it look a certain way to point away from themselves.
This happened in my little town, we’re a small town in the Central Valley of California and a commuter town to the SF. Any area. It’s a very nice mobile home park, not the stereotypical one very well kept with tennis courts and a swimming pool for the community.
I think there were several factors that point to psychosis: first, the unemotional affect; second, setting fires; third, inviting the victims sister over for what must be seen as an attempt to take another life.
I really don't understand how, or why, this woman was not institutionalized long before this tragic event! Never held accountable for well documented- at least to me- crimes. Not under supervision even with pretty obvious mental health issues and diagnoses. It is a heartbreaking story and one that should have been prevented. I cannot imagine how her family coped with this. Once again, thank you for your insights, helping us to understand what might have happened, and why!
Seeing that little girl cross the street with such youthful joy and Innocence shortly before her death is absolutely heartbreaking. How anybody can harm a child is beoynd my comprehension of understanding yet we are all aware there are people out there who are capable of performing such horrendous acts. I hope you are resting peacefully, sweetheart. You did nothing to deserve this.
She was a Sunday School teacher, which means she probably has weird religious ideas. She's not a normal person. Normal people work in offices, restaurants, as labourers, etc.
This is so sad and heartbreaking for that precious little girl oh God. It's good that the perpetrator is where she belongs, that will never bring that girl back my heart's broken

I don't think that it is "bias" of police to be looking for a male kidnapper when statistically it would be more likely to be a male kidnapper... Taking true information and statistics and facts into consideration while investigating isn't a "bias" ... 🤷 .. but it's true that investigators shouldn't jump to conclusions or get tunnel vision.
Dr. Grande, can you "speculate" as to why the authorities were so quick to label Bob Saget's death an accident considering the autopsy findings? That combined with the widow seeming surprisingly well composed on the talk show circuit and regarding various (alleged) life insurance policies taken out on him? This is pretty unusual, especially when a celebrity is involved. Thanks!
Another take away from this would be to not automatically assume people are safe just because they live close by and are female. Perhaps Sandra, besides being very cute, sweet, and outgoing, was someone Melissa's daughter wanted to hang out with--perhaps more than her. Not only that, but maybe Madison felt better physically when Sandra was around, too, thus thwarting her plans for obtaining sympathy through her child.

I really appreciate the way you break down the theories and possible motives, so insightful and so interesting! And as always love that little touch of humor! You're the best Dr. Grande! ♡♡
I remember this case so vividly as I was following it on Nancy Grace daily. I remember seeing the surveillance video where Sandra is skipping and crying because she looked so happy and care-free. Who would’ve imagined it would be her last hours on earth. My daughter was a little child around this same time, and it just haunted me on a personal level. Just one of the many tragic cases that never left me, like

Thank you for covering this case, Dr Grande. As always, your analysis bring comfort and grace to these senseless events 🙏🤍
"...I was following it on Nancy Grace daily."
Now there's a person who is definitely guilty- of murdering the truth.
@@BeachsideHank well personally, I didn’t watch her to get the “truth” from her, I watched her because of the lengthy coverage I didn’t get from other networks, at least not in depth.
I remember watching this horror unfold at the time. I live in a city about 20 minutes away and my son was the same age.
So sad what happened to the girl & how can a teacher with these issues be allowed to be around children?? Thanks Dr G😊💛💛
Hello Dr. Grande, you explained this case professionally, very well done. I always struggle and have a hard time with crimes that involve children. Therefore I do not have any comments on this case, but thank you for sharing with us Best Regards. 👍❤
Start doing background checks on "Sunday school" teachers.
Especially at churches where there is a lot of nepotism
Many churches do now but it wouldn't have prevented this as she had no prior convictions.
My youngest just turned 8 this month. No way I’d ever let her run around and not know where she was. No freaking way. She’s never even stayed the night anywhere.
was pretty common in my day to run around the trailer park at that age.
I agree, it seems like insanity to me
@Ivan Poohbear they didn't live in the safest area, being aware of your surroundings and applying common sense only sounds right.
I know. It’s like people who hate all gays, because they believe they are pedophiles. You can’t fix stupid.
Thank you for this detailed and informative video, Dr. Grande! I hope you enjoy your day! Cheers from Vegas!
I love all your videos but especially your true crime and missing persons 🙏 thank you for your amazing content
Such a sad story 😢 I pray our Lord received this precious little beautiful girl 🕊🙏🏼❤️
Im surprised she didnt sign the note off with "-not Melissa Huckabee".
That would have thrown them off the scent 🙄
That's right, people use to KNOW their neighbors and be more religious.
@@KoolT Religion doesn't make someone a good person. Case in point, the woman that killed Sandra was a Sunday school teacher.
Off topic: Did you know how easy it is to breed Monarch butterflies? It looks fun. I'm going to try this spring, you?
I was living in Tracy when this happened. So sad. The amount of news media in the area was unbelievable.
So was I.
I remember this case and it was so unbelievable . Thanks Dr. Grande , congratulations on your channel growth 👍
This case was very baffling and disturbing. It was hard to follow this crime because it just didn't make any sense, none at all.
You made a good point that no child was really safe running around there, and you have to wonder why her family let her run around a 100 trailer park without their supervision.
You should add some interrigation footage. Love to see you pick it all apart.
he probably could do a good vid in that style.
Idk i dont think it makes the news as much all the other cases
I can listen to you all day, Dr. Thank you for your tone and mannerism. It would be nice to meet you too. 😊
I'm in love with Dr. Grande. Such a good, decent, intelligent man.
your hair looks nice, Dr Grande
Thank you, Dr Grande~
So many of your insights truly help me, and surely many others, understand to some degree the inexplicable motives of others in commiting such horrific acts. .
I love your view on things. Stolen suitcase vs non stolen suitcase. Epic. ❣️❣️❣️
I love the way you throw shade Dr Grande, and your piquant sense of humor. 😆
I remember this case. It seemed so unusual at the time, I couldn't believe it didn't make more of a media firestorm.
You've had a diversion of material recently. This case brings you back to your roots. Excellent video
Doc we need a blooper montage of you breaking character when you’re delivering your deadpan jokes…pls and thnx
Yes!
the criminals history was MASSIVE. even before she was suspected by the detectives she was the last one to see Sandra alive...
Thank you.
Peace 💕🇺🇲
Your vids keep me from going insane at my monotonous job.
Thank you for pointing out that the FBI agent's casual profiling of an entire community is unacceptable. Some people are far too ready to tar everyone with the same brush. Now back to the video.
Which community do we mean in this case - the "criminal record community"?
@eb The whole community of yhe trailer park, not just the criminal element. As Dr Grande says it's a cautionary tale about not jumping to conclusions.
This bright little girl with so much life deserved better. All kids deserve better.
Do a video about the Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School stabbing (location in Hamilton Ontario) and also one of the worst schools in all of Canada
I remember this. Seeing that precious child skipping just brings it all back😢💔 I think her killer was possibly repeating SA she had experienced but I'm not a shrink. Appreciate all your content Doc!!🙌👏👏
Very sad case. Thank you for the analysis.
This is exactly what I always thought when hearing about profiles. They do fit so often... but they are so well known that anyone can just make it look a certain way to point away from themselves.
Feel better soon! I'm sure the good Dr. appreciated you sharing that. Love from Ohio!
What a beautiful little girl, this story just rips your heart out.
Just who I needed to hear right now ❤️
This happened in my little town, we’re a small town in the Central Valley of California and a commuter town to the SF.
What a vale of tears our earth is.
My favorite therapist..thanks dr. g..
I once lived in Tracy. I knew one of her family members, an Uncle. It was so devastating.
I was living there at the time
Big fan of the channel. Dr Grande, could you analyze the Leopold and Loeb case?
Always time for Dr. Grande!
These videos are ASMR with education!
Poor little baby, I'm so sorry she's gone. This world is full of hell. So sad
I like that shade of red she's wearing @ 8:08!
This is so sad and heartbreaking for that precious little girl oh God. It's good that the perpetrator is where she belongs, that will never bring that girl back my heart's broken
Can we please have a moratorium on the word "heartbreaking" and its variants?
Beware and always stay away( and keep your children away) from ugly Sunday school teachers.
Thanku what a lovely gentile Man you are love your content u have real compassion very interesting thanks for the research your voice is so soothing your analysis on every case study is on point look forward to future videos much love to u and your family from the uk tootle pip for now Sharon.
I lived in a large trailer park for a couple years. “Weirdos” are, indeed, very common.
Tragic story yes, but I laughed at that "...and other weirdos..." comment!! lol damn
