    This is completely fucked up. I love how, in the documentary, her mom and herself insist that she's never hurt anyone. She traumatized Derrick, his family, and HER family. She's a delusional narcissist. She was wrapped up in a fantasy she created in her head and had no problem violating the rights of Derrick, cheating on her husband, destroying her family, and hurting Derrick's family. The fact she can't even pronounce "D-Man" properly just makes it so much worse. She crossed SO MANY boundaries. This woman is twisted and deserves life in prison.

      Yeah, when I saw the "D-man" name in the documentary my first thought was there's nothing shocking about the idea that someone might've called him that before. It's not an uncommon premise for a nickname, proving that FC doesn't work. I agree with the boundaries as well. She wasn't just a family friend that wanted to help- she was employed as an educator who as a scholar was his facilitator. Even if anyone believed in her delusions, there's still the power dynamic at play due to her role was to be his facilitator. Her mom and former clients who she's helped wanting to believe the best in her I can understand, as I imagine it can be difficult to come to terms with a loved one being a sex offender. However, at some point you need to face the facts that just because you love someone whose never hurt you/you've never seen hurt anyone doesn't mean they didn't do it. Regardless of their varying levels of denial, those people are also on the traumatized list. As you rightfully said, the woman is twisted and should've received life in prison.

      As someone who is living with cerebral palsy, albeit in a fairly mild form, I find what this woman did to be horrific. People who are genuinely vulnerable need to be protected from people like this. At the same time, I hope that people don't automatically assume that everyone with CP is a potential victim who is incapable of deciding what he/she wants. I know people with cerebral palsy who are lawyers for example, while I have earned a pair of degrees in history and social work. I'm also very capable of telling someone to stop doing something that I don't want them to do. The point is that cases like this need to be judged on an individual level.

      While I agree that it would be ableist to assume based on appearances that a person lacks competence, there are no assumptions being made here. His intellectual disability is well documented. And most importantly, his inability to care for himself or understand language does not decrease his value or his personhood. I was a student of hers in the spring semester of 2011. I forget the official name of the class but we learned of eugenics and generally how disadvantaged people with disabilities are in society. We watched “Annie’s Coning Out” and learned about FC. She brought Derrick into our class one day to show us FC in action. We got to ask him questions about what it was like to live with his condition. I remember asking him at one point “Do you feel your family still understands and “gets” you even though you haven’t been able to talk to them.” and using FC with Anna’s help “he” responded “No, my family doesn’t really get me.” I was sick to my stomach when this story broke and the truth came out. I watched this documentary a few days ago, and watching Anna was very disturbing. She has such high levels of education, but it's clear there's something deeply mentally wrong with her. The part that struck me the most was how overjoyed she was to describe in great detail how and where she was intimate with the victim to his mother. She genuinely enjoys talking about what she did to him. She smiles the entire time. Even during her trail and during sentencing she smiled, disturbing. I'm glad that she views people with disabilities as no different than anyone else, but what she did was predatory. Had nothing to do about caring for him. She saw the opportunity and took full advantage of it. And for that she should have never been released from prison.

      Evil has no skin color. Equally, evil has no gender. Stop playing the Victim Card! People like you are part of "the problem". Yet, there is a grain of truth in what you say. As Old Adams and Old Eves, all of us are inclined to be tribal and, in that state of mind, tend to become hostile, disdainful, or indifferent toward the "other tribes.". The Black Tribe is just as capable of being "evil" as the White Tribe.
      As for Anna, she's a Godless (morally self-directed) Atheist. Her Godless (morally self-directed) thoughts turned into Godless (self serving, self indulgent) feelings, which turned into Godless (moralless and self-serving) actions. The trajectory is predictable. Individually and collectively. Collective Godlessness leads to inhumane Marxism. This ideology might first go through "gentle" Socialism, but, trust this truth, it eventually leads to Marxist dominated Communism.
      As for the individual Atheists who resist evil, when enough of them gather into Marxism, the good and decent Atheists, who did not indulge thoughts and feelings that misuse and abuse others, who tesist evil, they too shall be hunted down and canceled, silenced, fined, imprisoned, or executed. By Godless inhumane Marxism.
      We must never forget the abuses of Religionists, but, let's also remember that inhumane Marxists murders more of their own than even their enemies. Mao and Stalin, both Godless Atheists, killed between them over 100 million of their own citizens! THEIR. OWN. CITIZENS.
      Our Creator has a plan for humankind, and He have us, each, aprox 100 years and, collectively, 6000 years to figure things out. Our time is actually up. 2029 - 2033, God returns, to restore law and order, justice and mercy, and prosperity of body, soul and spirit.
      While I appreciate the work of good and decent psychology professionals who examine the human soul (psyche means soul) and can be quote helpful to others, still, I think if I'm going to place my soul in someone's care, I'd make it, first, my Creator Savior and, second, flawed fallible and naturally self-serving mortal humans. The second has some merit, yes, but, ultimately, permanent lasting healing (not just behavior modification) comes from the Bible God, Jesus Christ.
      May you all be blessed with prosperity... Body, Soul and Spirit. May you all meet Jesus and be completely healed from self interest and the fear and pain that so often assaults us as we try to make sense of the world around us. I once knew nothing but tyranny and bullying from childhood onward. Learning about the man Jesus led me to wonder why He was called God. In time, as I searched for truth (in many wrong places, not unlike how I also looked for love in all the wrong places), Jesus introduced Himself to me. Imagine my astonishment. Today, Jesus commands me... with my permission. And, truthfully, He'd not have it any other way ❤
      Many thanks to Todd Grande for tremendous insight into this horrible "hellish" situation. May all involved meet Jesus Christ and be comforted to know that, in spite of "Hell on Earth" increasing, Jesus returns soon. He will, ultimately, settle judgment upon those who went Godlessly their own way.

    Thank you so much for speaking out against FC. I'm on the spectrum and am consistently told that I am a "traitor" to the community because ABA helped me a lot, and I don't believe that it is abusive (even though there can be abusive ABA therapists, just like there can be abusive doctors or abusive teachers).
    Many of these people who have bullied me support facilitated communication, which I find to be incredibly ironic. ABA gave me the ability to communicate and advocate for myself and has scientific backing. The "evidence" against the therapy is often incredibly biased (e.g., sampling a bunch of people from a facebook group who hate ABA without even knowing what it is, and then claiming that 80% of people who go through ABA get PTSD from it).
    I'm genuinely tired of me and my family being accused of supporting child abuse, when FC has so many cases of abuse that no one wants to talk about. Recently, a family member of mine worked to overturn a bill that would allow FC in elementary schools. The FC "advocates" spun it to claim that the opposing side was "silencing" autistic children and denying them communication.
    Whether it's ABA, speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc...there are so many better ways to teach an autistic person how to communicate. And for what it's worth, one of the main proponents of FC (Dr. Bernard Rimland) became a vehement opponent of the practice when he realized there was no evidence behind it. That should tell you a lot about the validity of FC.

FC does not work, sorry, but i have seen it in my 21 years working in the adult disability services field and advocacy, it is the facilitator typing; and, you'll notice, with each so called ''facilitator'', the clients ''speech'' or typing patterns and styles fluctuates , the literacy levels vary, and personality is different with each facilitator.

After nearly a year of addiction, (the product I was buying changed over time; the last batch I used was much more destructive than anything I had tried before), I lost the ability to communicate. I could barely talk or write. My hands and neck moved uncontrollably like you see in people with severe autism. I couldn't eat or sleep for over a week. I feared I was going to be stuck inside myself for the rest of my life.
    People were treating me like a child because I couldn't communicate. I wondered very much if this was what people with autism/cerebral palsy/etc. experience--where full cognition is trapped inside a body that can't express itself. If that's the case, I fully understand why people with those diagnoses often scream for seemingly no reason. It's absolutely infuriating to be trapped like that and to have everyone assume you're not really there when you ARE.
    I still wonder to this day if people with severe mental disabilities are stuck inside themselves like I was for, as I call it, my Week of Terror. It was the most horrible experience I've ever lived through, and I am so, so sad for people who have to live like that forever, if that's indeed what's going on.
    From that perspective, I want to cry thinking that maybe, just maybe, these two people did form a sort of relationship that he cared about and got fulfillment from. Obviously you can't do what she did, but it's so depressing to think that this person can never have a real life of his own.

      Took the words right out of my mouth. I'm trying to figure out the beginning of her pathology. Her mothers profession had significant influence in forming her psyche. She's also quite liberal.

    People who are getting fixated on the "diaper" element are missing the point, and showing their ableism. Not everybody who struggles with incontinence is incapable of consenting to intimate relationships. It is possible to be incontinent and still have full cognitive capacity... It's the lack of independent communication (and demonstrated capacity) that makes this so wrong.

    • @Mst-bh9ti
      @Mst-bh9ti Місяць тому +1

      Huh, nobody is focused on that, that I've seen, vis-a-vis consent. The man can't substantially communicate with any specificity, the end.

      Um no. The words "removed his diaper" is going to skeez tf out of anyone in this situation. Its not ableist.
      You have to understand - the picture was painted of an adult man with the cognitive ability of an infant. So everyone has that mental image. Then followed by "removed his diaper". People are grossed out by the mental image.

      youd think a damn diaper would basically act as a modern day chastity belt, i mean, since thats probably the biggest turn off alone for most people, you think it would be at any rate .

    Many years ago I volunteered at an assisted living home for adults with cerebral palsy. There was one resident who used a FC device. She was successfully able to communicate. But I could easily see that she was a rare exception. She was only able to communicate basic wants. I can't imagine anyone with that level of disability doing much more than she could do.

      This is an example of legitimate use of a letterboard for individuals who cannot communicate otherwise. The guiding of the hand(s) of these individuals, however, is where the technique can become paradoxically harmful to the client and the facilitator alike.

    • @nursingnotes212
      @nursingnotes212 3 місяці тому

      @@JCHaywire I could maybe see guiding the hands in the beginning (like for example, to a picture of a cookie, saying the word "cookie," and giving the person a cookie to help build an association in the person's mind. But continuing to be the person to manipulate the person's hands is all kinds of skeevy.

    • @Shannonbarnesdr1
      @Shannonbarnesdr1 3 місяці тому +1

      if you do the research you'll see it has been debunked many times over: it is the facilitator typing, every, single, time. why its still promoted i have no idea, especially when things like teaching people how to use AAC devices , sometimes with adaptive buttons and switch access, , eye gaze, large track ball mouse ; also ASL, makaton signing, along with basic and modified sign language etc. to enable people to communicate spontaneous and autonomously.
