God of War Ragnarök is an action-adventure video game developed by Santa Monica Studio and the sequel to 2018's God of War. Based on Norse mythology, the game will be set in ancient Scandinavia and feature series protagonist Kratos and his teenage son Atreus.
It's good to be back!
Good to see ya 😄
Good to see you Jacky boy
It’s sure is!
Hyped!!
It's good to have you back! This game is awesome!
When Kratos found out that the bear he defeated was Atreus and he panicked, almost thinking he killed another child of his is just so heart-wrenching to think about.
Very touching, and saddening. I was like "200 Wat?!" Then Jack goes on the say Loki is hunted down later for his crimes, yes but do not forget Odin is the biggest reason shit hits the fan and Ragnarok is actually inevitable. It has happened more than once the World Serpent can tell us more about creation than the All Father himself. It's everything coming together. It's been Fimbulwinter in our world for a very very long time. Ragnarok's just round the corner mate. It's just a matter of time, semantics. It has probably already been....this is just us fading in a memory.
@@BlackMoonHowls came just to enjoy the content since i havent been able to play the game myself yet, well. smoked some weed and came to read the comments and ur comment just hits so fucking deep i cant even realize what the fuck is going trough my head rn man.
@@youngjedi0g maybe you shouldn’t smoke weed before watching a thought provoking story line lol
Bruh, my heart! If that had happened, that would have been it. That shit would have broken Kratos, period.
@@mrweirdo1548 makes it hit harder trust me
The death screen fake out and Thor reviving you with his hammer like a defibrillator to keep the fight going is so clever.
that was so sweet
That was fucking awesome
I saw a leak of that around a month back. It was cool then and still is now
it reminded me of the omega flowey fight and I loved it
Playing with game mechanics expectations
Out of the gate, the nod to Atreus being Loki with the antlers framing his silhouette, as well as him raising a wolf named Fenrir, I'm hooked already
Congrats, you got a heart from Jack. Now... whatever you do, don't edit the comment, otherwise you will lose the heart.
@@StanleyNumber427 that’s what happened…..
I genuinely did not know Loki had antlers. I knew he was a frost giant and Fenrir was his offspring but never heard about the antlers. Learn something new everyday
Now I'm wondering if that was FENRIR Fenrir, or if Atreus named his son after his pet for some reason.
@@philipgood5041 Something interesting to note is that in the mural depicting Skol, Hati and their father, their father is called Hróðvitnir and not 'Fenrir'. The father of Skoll and Hati and as a result assumed future son of Atreus is never actually called 'Fenrir' both in the Jotnar Shrines or by Mimir, only Hróðvitnir. Maybe they pulled an opposite of Freya and Frigg and made it so that Fenrir and Hróðvitnir are now two different characters?
Freya’s “KRATOOOSSSSS” scream in the beginning is some fantastic voice acting
I don't know why, but that scream reminds me of TFP Megatron screaming
Reminds me of Kratos’ classic scream “AAARREEEEESSSSS”
@@ElRoque6 or ZEEEEUUUSSSSSS!! YOUR SON HAS RETURNED!

I don't think Sean noticed it, but at 59:25 when Odin is about to put his hand on Atreus... Kratos reaches for his axe without a moment of hesitation. He was dam well ready to fight Thor and Odin right then and there just to keep him safe. Such a small detail but means so much for Kratos's growth.
Yeh it shows alot, kratos would not be able to defeat odin at that moment so it shows that hes willing to die trying to protect his son at any moment, and people call kratos shallow
@@excalibur2038 I think he very would, I haven't seen the rest of the game yet BUT Kratos is (or was) holding back so I think Kratos could beat them both. If he didn't hold back and since his son is in danger he won't be holding anything back.
He did the same move when Odin mentioned Atreus searching for Tyr
sean is not that dumb
he probably noticed that but kept carrying on
Sean?
Seeing Atreus having to tell Kratos to "Stop thinking like a father" and him straight refusing is so heartening to see after their initial coldness at the start of the last game.
RIGHT? That moment is insanely powerful. Kratos like "boy I spent the entire first game becoming a father, I ain't going back."
Oof
No pun intended
It's actually a parellel to when he killed his daughter in a state of rage way back when he was a general of the spartan army. That's why he said I almost killed you and how he doesn't want to think like a genearal.
I am just amazed with how softly Kratos is speaking to Atreus. Drastic change compared to the first game's 'BOY'
Kratos solemnly saying "I do not need a snack" in his deep, gravelly voice is something I'll keep in my heart forever.
It's going to live rent free in my head until I die
Makes me think of the “I’m a fucking God of War” clip.
For anyone who needs to record it and keep it for watching later - 1:55:11
timestamp please
I love that this game lets you hear Kratos say things like “snack,” “friend,” and “love.” He’s slowly becoming human again, even if he won’t admit it.
Reading the diary entry at 22:33. Kratos describing Mimir as "compact" made me chuckle! XD
Same lol
It's so nice how Kratos and Mimir are actually friends now. He even takes his advice about things!
And he actually calls him by his name instead of “Head”
@@garyking3389 lol
He even called him brother at some point
in the codex entry for mimir kratos calls him an unlikely brother
I guess its one of those things where we only saw them in the span of likely a few days when they first met and so the bond wasn't enough for kratos (being the closed off one)to open up. But now it's been years so they've likely been cool for a good while.
I liked how impressed Jack was about the fact that even the bear has a name but Björn is the swedish word for a bear
Bjørn is also the norwegian word for bear lol
bjørn is also the danish word for bear
@@thesnekku And the same for danish.
What i first see from the name is it is similar to Beorn from LOTR and i thought it was an easter egg
Icelandic too lmao
I love the way Odin conducts himself, he’s like a businessman, he’s just so smooth
"like a businessman" soooooo... Like an asshole?
More like a mob boss
When he doesnt get what he wants he goes “ok. Die then”
I think they did a really good job with Odin. Like, you KNOW you shouldn't trust him, you can TELL he's this sneaky, backstabbing d-bag who would sell his own grandma if he thought it would give him the smallest advantage, and yet you can't help but like him and want to help him. And that's what makes him dangerous. He's AWARE of his reputation and uses it, coming off as this self-deprecating, "yeah, I know I'm a bastard and I'm trying to not be" guy. He's SMART. And that's why he's a dangerous man.
It makes for a nice contrast with Zeus, Zeus felt like a tyrannical King but Odin feels like a cross between a Cult Leader and a Mafia Crime Boss.

Finally, someone who recognizes my greatness
I squealed so loudly in excitement when Kratos reads the Giant language my cats all ran away.
HE CONTINUED LEARNING FROM ATREUS. MY HEART.
This is adorable
Oh damn I missed that! Awesome detail!
It's not the giants language... It's just Norse
@@January1983_1 but still. It's adorable asf
@@multiple815 atleast get it right 🤷♂️
I like how this Odin is so different from most other portrayals. It really emphasizes his paranoia rather than his raw strength
He reminds me of a mob boss in a movie.
Paranoid Mob Boss is the perfect way to describe him and his actions
to odin he has killed ymir biggest strongest primordial force there is and yet there is something capable of washing that away in contrast groa lying is worse because odin believes his lifes work is at stake not just HIS life the portrayal of i wanna know whats next is one thing hes willing to accept there is a "next" but fear of a "young stupid" sacrifice he made long ago being undone for nothing seems a much more significant driving force and why he would seek out peace i feel this not only has been significantly overlooked odin did care about the realms its why he sought peace before answers but knowing his deception (of the group) and guidance of loki wasnt enough he sough those answers to prepare for the outcome of his demise to know his life wasnt for nothing to seek justification for his lifetime of work (AS ANY SOUL WOULD)
Reminds me of Khrushchev in Death of Stalin
Well paranoia isn't the word I'm thinking of if they worry of something happening and there are 🤔things? People? Gods? Idk... Anyways things that don't want you to exist and your kind of SUS about their motives, I'd say that more like survivalism or am I wrong? I'm just asking more than anything, not trying to go against the grain. Just wanted to ask
I love the detail of Atreus wearing a necklace with the arrow piece that broke Baldur’s spell. The attention to little things in character designs, I swear.
I like how at 58:09 and 59:27, each time Odin mentions Atreus, Kratos quickly holds his axe in case anything happens to him.
Thor and Kratos putting their weapons on the table is like two gunslingers putting their revolvers on the table before going outside to kill each other...I love solid foreshadowing.
Made especially more potent by the fact the two weapons are essentially siblings with the 'younger' one being made specifically to oppose the 'older'
@@carlzerris6566 which one is younger? I feel like it would be the leviathan axe right
@@coop-le-woop Yes. Brok and Sindri created it to redeem their crime of creating mjolnir.

They absolutely nailed the mannerisms of wolves. Fenrir's squeaking and ears folding back are spot on to a tired old pup.
Can we talk about how perfect Ryan Hurst’s voice is as Thor? He just brings so much calmness and intensity to the character.

I like how Kratos writes the journal entries in this game rather than Atreus, implying Atreus taught him to read & write
He’s also taught him how to read the runes which is nice I can’t imagine kratos picked that up quickly
I mean, he knows how to read and write (Greek) but not the foreign language
He already knew how to read and write 💀
@@Dctctx I believe their talking about Nordic language rather than Greek. Because in the previous game Kratos needed Atreus' help in order to read the runes(his mother, Faye taught him). Here how ever, Kratos either 1- wrote it in Nordic so Atreus taught him Nordic or 2- he wrote it in Greek.
Atreus, Kratos, and Mimir all write in the Journal
22:34 Seeing Kratos call Mimir brother in his journal was heartwarming, until he said that he was easy to transport and doesnt cosume precious resources. Made me spit my drink out, that one
Yeah I love how it’s a plus for him 😂😂😂

I’d like Odin’s look more if his beard was longer, but I like what they did with him. He’s deceptively harmless looking, appearing frail and weak. He’s charismatic to distract from his sadistic scheming. It’s very appropriate
Same, I feel it would've been better if they gave him long hair that he had braided or tied into a pointy tail too, over all tho I like his character design definitely different from the Greek gods
@@mckrinoleon1069 also, I like how the characters of gods are done in the entire God of War universe. While greek gods were modest and dramatic and talk more in old, shakespear like english (if you know what I mean), norse gods are more simple and have more uncultured speech and behaviour and have more warior-like mentality than the greeks. It shows very well that they are from different cultures, I like it.

Fun fact, Atreus's voice actor, Sunny Soljic grew so much since the first game they had to modify Atreus's voice through a filter because it didn't fit the boy appearance.

I really like how when Atreus was going on about how they should find someone who can help them understand who he is, you can tell that Kratos is really starting to get annoyed and angry, but just like the first game, he manages to get it back under control. Helps show his growth outside the stuff seen in game.
I love that we're witnessing how Loki comes to be. Kratos is like an incredibly strict parent so Atreus has come to value sneakiness to help him forward his goals and such. Small thing but great.

I absolutely love how Freya yells Kratos name. Just the exact same way he yelled Ares name when he wanted revenge.
woaaaaaaaah
I actually never realised that
And the way they both basically killed their family themselves
By accident at least
Facts
@@Im_iadneT Only difference is that Kratos’ family were innocent, and were killed suddenly without warning. Buldur was killed to stop ending a toxic relationship with his mother by choking her to death. She’d accepted her fate, but Kratos had seen this cycle perpetuate with the Greek Gods. A cycle of hate and self loathing with little compassion or mercy for each other and no remorse for atrocities to man or gods. This cycle is apparent in all mythologies, Kratos took a life to save one. Many gods of other mythologies may stick to their cruel and petty ways, but Kratos is further than any of them emotionally. He’s a broken man that’s matured, knowing revenge is childish and brings nothing but pain, death, and empathy isolation. He’s become a wise man, but he’ll only fight those that push him enough at this point. He’s done terrible things in his long life, but at this point, Kratos is tragic.

He does
And doesn’t take his hand off of it until he stands up to deliver his “no.”
I also noticed Odin keeps trying to get Thor to drink, and complains “you’re no fun anymore” after it becomes clear Thor isn’t going to. For some reason he wanted Thor DRUNK when he fought the goddamned Ghost of Sparta.

At 22:30 in the journal entry about Faye it says “I see glimmers of her in Atreus and it makes me smile” and I think that’s a small detail that references how she would pick up heavy things easily like that fallen tree in his dream 🥲 BOY is growing up 😭

56:53 Odin is such a _hypocrite_ here. He’ll admit Magni and Modi’s deaths were self-defence (which they were), but _somehow,_ killing _Baldur_ whilst Baldur was trying to kill Kratos, Atreus, and Freya _isn’t?!_ Baldur may have been Odin’s best tracker, and had other skills Odin valued, but _that doesn’t mean Baldur’s death wasn’t a case of both self-defence _*_and_*_ defence of others._ It _was._
Also, note the words Odin uses to describe who Baldur was to him. “Tracker.” “Closer.” And others that surround Baldur’s usefulness. _Nothing_ about loving his son, or Baldur’s personhood. That? _That_ is objectification of the non-sexual variety. People are just _tools_ to him.
This first interaction between Odin and Kratos is what absolutely convinced me that Odin is _truly_ a villain, not just through the stories we heard in 2018, but from Odin’s actual _behaviour_ when we finally see him in person. It doesn’t matter how much Odin and the Aesir insist he’s a good person, or how much the game sows little seeds of doubt in its through-line. He is well and truly _evil._
Also that he calls Magni and Modi useless right in front of Thor. He shows absolutely no sadness or mourning at the deaths of his own grandsons, nor care for his son who's lost his children. He solely cares that they were expendable, therefore they aren't worth picking a fight over. He's a sociopath in every sense of the word.

@@noahkline4263 Yeah but Drax is a legit Alien and Kratos is from a lineage of human but then got cursed by the Gods (punishment), well eventually he basically became one by killing them all and then moving on to the Norse side of things. Settling down eventually and creating more Norse Lore unintentionally. Loki, I just hope doesn't turn out like OUR version. I'm still awaiting Ragnarok myself. Hoping SOMONE figures out how to eventually stop it altogether. Until then The Word Serpent Will forever witness the end of times and then the creation of all things until they don't. Who knows when or even if that'll be, ever.
56:12 funny how atreus goes the long way to avoid the camera crew
Watching that opening cutscene again, I just can't get over how well these guys can portray emotion through silence and body language alone. It's some powerful stuff.
I love how jack just lets the story play out instead of constantly commentating. You can really feel the emotion in whatever is happening.
1:05:31 The fact that they _froze a bolt of lightning_ is badass
They splintered the world tree
@senator Steven Armstrong you got the time stamp for that part on the video

Yeah
I know right it's so cool.
I love all these Dad of Boy games and to see Sean always playing them is amazing
Interesting take on Odin. He talks so modern, like all the knowledge he’s amassed has put him beyond the ways of others.
He talks like a used car dealer
Literally calling Freya is ex? He almost reminds me of an organized crime boss or something. Even sent Thor in first as an intimidation tactic.

43:01 man that hit hard.. Kratos has been many things, a killer, a general, a soldier, but right at this point he knows he buried his past in order to become a father
You can tell Jack is a professional because he stayed as quiet as he could during the big cutscenes
This is the reason why I watch Jack's playthrough, he knows when is time for everything, including silences to pay attention
It’s because he loves the story as much as we do 🥺
Jack and theradbrad are the only ones who I can think of that stay quiet through cut scenes.
@@nelo2thegreat hell yeah, others are like "oh my god oh my god!!!!"

Jack:I love these games
13 minutes in and Jack is already holding back tears. This is gonna be an epic ride.
this game will be a emotional rollercoster
God bless you and whoever reads this, Jesus loves you .
I cannot lie. Same. That was a gutpunch of a way to bring us back into their world, and i LOVE it. This is the quality of a AAA title we expect, and GOW delivers.
Lost my dog recently and that scene made me sob, they really nailed how it feels
The audio de-synch around an 1:25:00 inwards is really irritating, I hope Sean catches it for bud next video, good good stuff though
He was literally talking to the wolf the way I talk to my dog. To say that the tears were gonna pour out of my eyes would be an understatement
Literally same 😭😭😭
I literally had to try so hard not to cry tears were almost out
same. just trying not to cry at work 😥
ditto, cried like a baby. There's something about saying you can rest now that is so beautiful but absolutely devastating.
Bro same but I fucking hate these kind of scenes in games, it's like a forced cry simply because dog people can relate to their dog dying rather than crying for the actual dog dying. We knew nothing about him and yet they wanted to make that scene.
I'm sure Kratos appreciates the irony of being the target of someone else's revenge. I also like how Freya and Atreus actually try to not hurt each other.
Yep, definitely not lost on him. But I like how he understands that and is doing his best not to harm Fraya
@@lmul1441 Nor does he hold it against her.
I love the first Thor fight cause Thor is constantly like "IS THAT ALL YOU GOT LET ME SEE THE GOD OF WAR" my brother under Odin you are only alive because you heal between cutscenes. You are fighting an ax designed to save people rather than the blades that were made to kill gods.
Oh my god Odin is LITERALLY the Godfather. They made this man a celestial mob boss, and thats honestly incredible
I love seeing Atreus with the deer, it really shows how much he has learned and grown from the last game, in a few seconds.
“You’re a good boy”
*instant sobbing*
I will never forgive them for killing off such a good boy. 😭😭😭
@@angryuniicorn BOY DO I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU!
13 minutes in and I'm crying. Never met Fenrir, haven't seen any interactions with Fenrir up until now, but the pain Atreaus was in as he let him pass on was the quickest any piece of media has made me cry. What a start
I do love how the real Norse mythos Thor’s hammer wasn’t like, super worthy only mode, it was just so insanely terrifyingly powerful you couldn’t wield it without destroying yourself usually
Well not really it was just really heavy. Even Thor needs gauntlets of strength to wield it.
@@ethanlong4670 Exactly.
But Mijolnir being heavy was 1 of the reasons of its incredible power.
@@ethanlong4670 It is unclear exactly what the gauntlets were for because he definitely could wield it without the gauntlets. The belt is the strength belt, the gaultlets don't give strength; the name Megingjörð literally translates to "power belt" whereas the gauntlets, Járngreipr, just means "iron grips." Fun fact the strength belt _doubles_ the wearers existing strength. Again, to isn't actually required for him to wield the hammer. It is suggested that he requires the belt and the gloves to wield the hammer more effectively with some translations suggestion that the gloves mitigate the feedback generated by catching the returning hammer or the power generated by using its magic. There is also speculation that the gloves help him grip it more effectively since the handle was accidentally shortened during its making (the handle is only two hand-widths and thus very unwieldy).
Thor’s most likely strong enough to wield the hammer without any help, the equipment definitely makes him deadly efficient with it though
@@thecanadiandane7262 He also has the belt that doubles his strength.
I really love the fact that in God of War(2018) Atreaus wrote the codex book but in this game it’s Kratso

The Thor fight is so fantastic. A perfect successor to the Baldur fight, I get goosebumps every time. You can really tell they put their heart and soul into this game.
Atreus's spell in the beginning translates to "Sleep, from now on, sleep, from here, sleep, sleep " 🥺

Why do most games begin with animals dieing I'm autistic and autistic people are known to be fond of animals (like if a animal gets hurt the autistic person gets hurt etc) just why

I recently lost my soul dog and the scene where Atreus had to let go of Fenrir hit me SO hard.. it’s such a heart wrenching scene for those who know the feeling. Hell, even if you don’t, I think it still hurts the soul to watch someone say goodbye to an animal that means so much.
