The relationship between Sindri and Atreus is sooo wholesome, i love to watch them interact; play jokes and protect each other. Atreus never had any friends and finally he has one.
Norse mythology (/language) trivia: 5:58 "Skjálfa" means "to shiver, tremble" in Icelandic. 9:27 Heimdall was the guardian god of the Aesir, who keeps watch over the rainbow bridge that leads to Asgard (bifrost). Gjallarhorn (meaning "hollering horn") was the horn Heimdall would use to warn the gods about the approach of the giants (the gods' enemies) during Ragnarok. Heimdall and Loki are fated to kill each other during the battle. 10:20 Lyngbakr ("heather back" in Icelandic) is a massive whale that baits sailors by posing as a heather-covered island, sinking into the sea when a crew landed on its back (thus drowning them). 13:36 Lyr is Menglöð's/Menglad's (often identified with Freyja) hall in Jotunheim (the land of giants). 13:59 "Dreki" is Icelandic for "dragon". 16:33 "Rönd" is Icelandic for "stripe, streak" or "edge, rim" 23:33 Trolls were giant, monstrous beings (sometimes possessing magic powers) who lived in isolated rocks, mountains, or caves. Hostile to men, trolls lived in castles and haunted the surrounding districts after dark. If exposed to sunlight they burst or turned to stone. 27:30 "Järnsmida" means "iron forge" in Swedish. 37:46 Kvasir was a poet and the wisest man, born from the saliva of the Aesir and Vanir gods, after performing a peace ritual on spitting into a common vessel. He traveled around to spread knowledge, until he has killed by the dwarfs Fjalar and Galar, who mixed his blood with honey to create the Mead of Poetry (which gave wisdom and poetic inspiration to those who drank it). And yeah, when Loki was hiding from the gods after killing Baldr, Kvasir noticed the outline of a crude net in the ashes of the of the hearth in Loki's house (which Loki crafted tried to think what the gods could use to catch him in fish form), and deduced it was made to catch fish (he shared that with the gods, and that's what allowed them to find and catch Loki in a stream near the house, shapeshifted into a salmon). 53:49 "Meign" probably comes from "sameign", which means "conflict, fight" in Old Icelandic. 57:13 Durin/Durinn is a dwarf who forged the magic sword Tyrfing. 57:18 World Mill is an interpretation of the cosmos as a rotating millstone, which could churn out well-being or disaster. It is associated with Mundilfari ("the one who turns the handle of the mill"), the father the sun and the moon (with his name related to the fixed nature of temporal cycles). It's also associated with Bergelmir, one of the few giants who escaped the deluge of blood from Ymir (which flesh and blood were used by Odin to create the earth and the sea) using a luthr (a box-mill). 58:30 Draugr are animated corpses (undead creatures) that inhabit their grave, often guarding buried treasure. 1:06:06 "Hvat er at gerast?" means "What is happening?" in Icelandic. 1:11:52 "Hættu" means "stop" in Icelandic. 1:16:23 Alfheim was the world of the elves. 1:18:07 "Sverð" is Old Norse for "sword". 1:23:19 Nidavellir is just another name for Svartalfheim (the world of dwarves - the game considers Nidavellir to be a city in Svartalfheim, though). 1:30:18 Jormungandr (aka "the world serpent", since it was so big it could encircle the world) was a child of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Jormungandr and Thor are fated to kill each other during Ragnarok. 1:34:51 Tyr's arm got bitten off by Fenrir once the wolf realized the gods (including Tyr) tricked him into being bound with the chain Gleipnir. At Ragnarok Fenrir finally breaks free, ultimately defeating Odin but also being defeated by Vidar (one of Odin's sons). 1:36:06 "Örva ýta" literally means "Incite push" in Icelandic (since the arrow pushes enemies away). 1:40:13 "Iron wood" (Járnviðr) is a forest inhabited by giantesses/trollwomen (járnviðjur) who bore jötnar (giants) and giant wolves. 1:44:36 Bestla is the mother of the gods Odin, Vili and Vé. She is also Mimir's sister. 1:47:26 Surtr is the fire giant who ruled Muspelheim (the primordial world of fire) and had a great burning sword. During Ragnarok, he leads the fire giants against the Aesir gods. Surtr and the god Freyr are fated to kill each other during the battle.
Correction on that last point. Freyr could not kill Surtr because he lost his magic sword in a previous story. Thus he died, and Surtr was able to burn away the old world.
Something to note about what was mentioned about Atreus; he is VERY suppressed when he's with his dad. This makes a lot of sense because his dad not only shreds through fights due to his might, but because his personality causes his kid to hesitate. Without the big daddy around, Atreus is probably about as strong as a spartan soldier due to his magic, which honestly is probably the minimum requirement to act as support for the god-killer.
I just wish they could really tell the other how much they love each other. Kratos is so bad at telling Atreus that he loves him, is proud of him and is scared for him
One of the reasons I love the segment he has alone with Sindri. It's truly nice to see Atreus being able to openly bond with Sindri (cracking jokes at and with each other, giving each other nicknames, etc.) and what good it does for both of them.
@@Salty_Suds yeah but the books say they came two at a time and weren’t trying to harm him. Still impressive stamina though. (edit: there was also decent time between each two person wave)
I love how Mimir gives call-outs during combat lol. He probably doesn't need to since you have the arrows to warn you anyway, but it's a fun way to get him involved & it feels realistic.
Personally I think that Mimir telling you to look out is a great mechanic, sure the arrows are there but sometimes they're hard to keep track of when in an intense battle. So I often find Mimir saving my ass. (Especially on NG+ and GMGOW where everything is almost one shot)
That's usch a great way of putting it - Sometimes you'll find yourself in that "God of War" trilogy mode, as you say tunnel visioned into just blind fury as you beat the shit out of the enemies in front of you, then you get Mimir like "'eh heads up mate, to the left" and then you can dodge and avoid a potentially life ending attack lol@@idkanymore6897
A large difference in this story is that this is Atreus' quest. Atreus is largely making the (questionable) decisions, and Kratos is following as mentor, forcing Atreus to think through his actions and consider the consequences.
When Jack said “I want to see Kratos smile once” I remembered at the beginning of the game (when they got back from hunting and being chased by Freya) that Kratos had smiled when Atreus had gotten the deer before Kratos could even offer to get it. It was a small smile, but it was a proud one.
It's nice to see how far Atreus and Kratos relationship progressed. Atreus joking about Kratos knees and Kratos being sarcastic with Atreus. Both showing that they are now comfortable and happy being with each other.
30:48 I love how after talking about how Kratos might die and you could play as Atreus in the next game, I figured he was thinking about TLOU, then I knew when he immediately accidentally called Atreus "Ellie".
The Dreki kill animation is so goddamn good as they do it in tandem and the way Atreus stabs its neck twice viciously then ending it with a stab together with Kratos, you can see his development in fighting
As a person who works with kids who are around Atreus' age, this is such a good representation of how it's natural for kids look up to people outside of their family. Atreus is enamoured by an idea of Tyr, and has a strong friendship with Sindri (the dwarf almost acting as another mentor, but one more personable to Atreus-- hence why Atreus listens more to what Sindri has to say). Kratos comes across to me as a bit of a helicopter parent, honestly (though not without reason). He is worried about his kid finding the wrong people to look up to and making the same mistakes as him. But at some point, he needs to let Atreus socialize with others without his dad constantly over his shoulder. He's now doing it behind Kratos' back because Kratos simply is too restrictive. Such an excellent parent-child representation. A lot of parents should play this game and the first (fourth) GoW game just to learn a bit more about and understand it.
For sure. I work with kids of a variety of ages but we were specially educated on how to be those outside role models those kids were looking for. Essentially we were trained on how to be the cool older siblings to them while also teaching them useful skills
Agreed! Atreus also feels like hiding secrets is justified because his father has literally done the same to him throughout his childhood- Kratos is still doing it now by not saying anything about the prophecy that he saw depicting his own death .....
I love how kratos and atreus have grown- i love their convos "one day i might even be stronger than you!'' "if your not, i have failed" and then the cute convo on atreus growing a beard
The beard conversation is easily the best. Kratos cracking an actual joke with his son is a moment we need more of. He doesn’t need to be a jokey character all the time but he also doesn’t need to be grim with the son he very clearly loves 24/7
@@GameOver-nm2us they were both jokingly teasing him when he said it cause they both have amazing, and with him saying that and not actually seeing scruf is funny
I'm loving the unexpected friendships like Kratos and Mimir, Atreus and Sindri... Kratos is constantly asking for Mimir's opinion, searching for some guidance and he even called him brother when Mimir was troubled by his past mistakes. And now Atreus and Sindri is a lighthearted and fun friendship amidst this dark war-like scenario. Atreus can finally be himself and joke around freely. Cute!

*long run for sure. Idk if Kratos would agree with the "good" part of your statement considering the whole ashes-of-child-and-wife and prisoner-of-destiny thing lol
@@TiredDoktor6391 After God of War 1, it’s implied that Kratos has been wreaking havoc across Greece with his Spartan army for centuries. Zeus puts a stop to this, and Kratos swears revenge, ending his father and the Grecian pantheon once and for all. This gives us between 130 - 230 years. At the end of the Grecian trilogy, Kratos witnesses the destruction of Sparta, an event that happens in 464 BC. God of War takes place right before Fimbulwinter, the event that heralds the arrival of Ragnarök, which occurs in 535 AD. With some quick calculations, we can thus determine that nearly 1,020 years have passed between Kratos’ time in Greece and his time in ancient Scandinavia. We can then add the final numbers using Atreus. In God of War set in Scandinavia, we know Atreus is 11. And in God of War Ragnarök, he’s 14, meaning we can add another 14 years to Kratos’ age.
I actually love they tyr is big and intimidating but he's got a gentle voice, it's a refreshing take on war gods and it also gives a little depth into his character why he was trusted by the giants
@@jordanhunter3375 This was only caused because Fenrir felt Betrayed when the Aesir locked him in the Unbreakable chains. yeah, but then the audience doesn't get overwhelmed and he gets more views because his audience is in anticipation and floods in faster once the episode is released. I get your frustrations, but it'd be a bad move for pretty much everything else than convenience.
I definitely think they should do a disconnected spinoff like Fromsoft did with Sekiro, focusing on a much more nimble Jedi: Fallen order type game. They've got all the ingredients for it, and they'd do it well, no doubt. While watching Atreus, it reminded me of how it felt when I finally mastered the game, with those swift little barely-missing dodges and counterattacks. I think the industry is ready for a shakeup like it honestly, EA's single good game and Fromsoft need some competitors to enact a change or sharpen their skills against.
I love the dynamic between Atreus and Sindri. Their easier relationship and playful banter are a refreshing change of course from Atreus and Kratos's more tense dynamic. Getting Atreus away from his hard-ass dad for a while gave us a good look at how much more comfortable and confident the kid is when he's not in his father's shadow. You can talk all day about the awesome graphics and gameplay, but they did a freaking excellent job at crafting these characters too.
Yeah. So far I’ve seen only three people play the game and one of them was Kaptain Kuba. And none has caught that he smiled. I don’t know It was pretty significant and heartwarming for me.
1:32:54 just realised that the two ravens sitting on the chest Atreus tries to punch are Huginn and Muninn 👀 God, it really just helps nail home just how cunning Odin actually is and how he knows how to ingratiate himself to Atreus when he takes him up on his offer to go to Asgard.

The weird looking plants on 12:52 are actually pre historic plant that is alive today found on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. Pretty cool to see them include this plant in the game.
*Something that you may have missed:* Atreus' talk with Freya is at the Council of the Valkyries where you fight the Valkyrie Queen "Sigrun" in the first game. Vey nice attention to detail considering Freya is the true queen of the Valkyries
Touching? That's interesting. It felt hype af while playing. Watching someone else play and playing yourself provides with two different experiences of the same game, huh
Týr's fear of Kratos. The demi-god that slaughtered the entire Greek pantheon. Has got to be the best thing I've seen in the duology. We don't get to really see that enough.
In the comics, the first island that Kratos washed up to after he leaves Greece, also knew of his wrong-doings. So it's canon that the story of the Ghost of Sparta has reached a worldwide audience, even the Norse Gods themselves are aware of him. I wonder if its the same for the other mythos
It really does make sense. The story of Kratos prolly be either a well known story or an unexplained myth at the very least for other mythos. Like a legend story. I find that aspect to be quite fascinating and hope it gets explored in whatever world they end up next.
He is a god slayer, and likely myths radiated outward, legends, something that's to be feared if not faced correctly, even then, I like to think he cannot truly die, if he ever needs to be called upon or something brings out that simmering anger, he will come back. Plus, it's not God of War without Kratos imo.
1:17:55 "I thought Tyr would have been behind a much bigger door and lock and way harder to get to." Something I wished I have thought as well so that the "surprise" doesn't hurt as much.
Honestly all these little things I noticed that made me feel sus of him I just chalked up to Tyr being traumatized after years of torture. Then the end happened. And it all made sense.
I just realized that the "Large Society Ground Orb, The Performance" poem is all about a baseball game "nine warriors strong" is talking about the nine players in the field, "the orb in the air and branches in hand" is the baseball and bat, "the spectators stand" are the fans, "nine nights and nine days" are the innings, "running, then waiting" are the runners going to base and waiting to run again, and what finally confirmed it was not only the drawing looking like a baseball but the final two words "struck out". This message was brought to you by a baseball player/fan :)
Jörmungandr is so insanely well done. Truly looks like a legendary Norse titan. Also his voice is one of the coolest effects I have ever heard in a game. Really shows just how insanely huge he is Edit: Your like just made my day Jack. Thank you so much man. Keep being awesome
@@chrisgore8597 Yo, that sucks but makes so much sense. Otherwise, after they like it, you could make it say ANYTHING. You know some jerk would abuse that.
Atreus and Sindri fighting together was my favorite part of this episode. Their back and forth banter was so funny without seeming forced and I absolutely loved it.
Jack’s walkthrough just keeps getting better and better, and honestly the best part about it is just seeing him fully enjoying it happily from beginning to end.
I love the theory that Jörmungandr can speak the same language as everyone else, but it just sounds weird because it's slower and deeper. In the last game, it sounded like he said "I know you, Ghost of Sparta" to Kratos, and at 1:40:19 it sounds like he says "You'll be there."
I'm glad Jack's enjoying himself, and playing how he wants to play. Also, I'm a sucker for vocal music, but that chanting when the world serpent rose at 1:39:20 was phenominal.
It gets me how it does not help at all to assuage Tyr, when Atreus just says "Yeah, we brought him right back!", after Kratos dangles Mimir in front of him. It's just really darkly hilarious that his self alleged saviors introduce themselves with an unintended threat.
I love how watching jse play god of war you're also learning about the culture and the myths, my momma can no longer say I'm not learning anything. Also my entire family loves his personality, my dad always asks if he posts anything new and we sit and watch all the videos together. Feels good to have a common interest.
I don't know if it has been brought up before, but Jack pointed out that in the last game, it was Faye who marked all the pathways. So who is leaving these new markings? I think we were already shown. Back in the temple when Boy was showing Dad and Head what he had learned about the mural, he also had put notes on the wall about Tyr being imprisoned. These notes were in the same red & white markings as the pathways. We already have time shenanigans with Big Snaek, is it too much of a stretch to propose an older Atreus leaving them?
Just gotta say, I love Jack explaining the Norse lore in this series. I love mythology and history, so it really adds a lot to the series in my opinion.
I find the lighting work for Atreus talking to Freya amazing, the way the fire shifts to warmer colours as she speaks softer after being given hope, then immediately turns to stark blue shades as she closes her heart off. Amazing
I might be looking too much into it but I like how Freya used some green vines things to hold Atreus because she didn't really wanted to hurt him but the second time when she was confused and overwhelmed she raised up thick roots with thorns as a "I'm protecting myself but i will attack back if you come closer".
"Kray Kray and Trey Trey!" Loving the wetlands and the mines. I'm loving how Atreus' character is progressing as well, he seems a bit more outspoken in this game, talking back to his father a couple of times and I love how most of the storyline is based on Atreus looking for answers and having this deep need to find out who he is and what he's really capable of whilst trying to stop Odin. At times I feel like it's Atreus' mission and Kratos is just along for the ride providing the muscle. It's a great storyline.
Brothers and sisters! It's been a pleasure following Sean's journey in GoD5. But the time has come and I finally have a PS5 to play this magnificent. I must stop here at 50:53 and start my own journey. I will be back to watch the rest when I have completed this amazing game. I can't wait to know everything that happens and watch Sean's reactions. Hopefully Kratos doesn't actually die as the prophecy says.
I really love how Mimir has this relationship of trust with Kratos. Kratos actually values Mimirs advice alot This is a bit of a random comparison to make but those Moments of Mimir and Kratos talking one on one reminds me of the show home improvement where sometimes Tim Allen would just go talk to his next door neighbor over the fence and his neighbor would offer helpful advice I love that
The difference between Atreus and Kratos is so cute to me, the way Atreus tries to break the chest like his father was absolutely adorable. Kratos is a brute force type of man and Loki has lots of tricks and other ways to go about things

Norse mythology (/language) trivia:
5:58 "Skjálfa" means "to shiver, tremble" in Icelandic.
16:33 "Rönd" is Icelandic for "stripe, streak" or "edge, rim"
23:33 Trolls were giant, monstrous beings (sometimes possessing magic powers) who lived in isolated rocks, mountains, or caves.
Surtr and the god Freyr are fated to kill each other during the battle.
thanks for this! it’s interesting.
You deserve more recognition for this🙌🏽
Correction on that last point.

Without the big daddy around, Atreus is probably about as strong as a spartan soldier due to his magic, which honestly is probably the minimum requirement to act as support for the god-killer.

the arrows are mimir, it's the games way of portraying that

The fact that Kratos talks to Atreus instead of just giving him orders like in the last game really shows how they have both grown.
Yeah, the sheer attention to detail and meticulous writing that was put into the character development is astonishing.

@@TiredDoktor6391
After God of War 1, it’s implied that Kratos has been wreaking havoc across Greece with his Spartan army for centuries.
27:04 I like how Kratos didn't really care about Atreus swearing, it was about the fact that he lost control.

Atreus and Sindri fighting together was my favorite part of this episode. Their back and forth banter was so funny without seeming forced and I absolutely loved it.
I love how how kratos talked to Tyr. From soldier to soldier. He knew what would do the trick

@@therion8469 Tyr is Tyr?
@@lancewalker2595 maybe ;)
@@randomguyintheinternet4200 shh, they mustn't know yet.
I don't know why, but seeing Tyr run away and crouch is both sad and adorable.
The first thing he said to Mimir was just his name
I love how much more comfortable Kratos feels with Atreus now, the character progression in these games is pretty neat
Jack: *swears like a sailor*
Also Jack when Atreus swears like a sailor: "wait did he swear?"
Oh yeah i loved it lmaoooo
It's odd hearing Tyr's voice. He's such large intimidating figure, and he has such a calm normal voice.
Hes allfather daddy

I feel it's a good choice, since Tyr is not just the god of war, he is the god of justice, and honor. A more gentle voice suits him well.
@Patrick39 No you're Patrick
I love how watching jse play god of war you're also learning about the culture and the myths, my momma can no longer say I'm not learning anything. Also my entire family loves his personality, my dad always asks if he posts anything new and we sit and watch all the videos together. Feels good to have a common interest.
That's so sweet 💖 I wish I could bond over jse with family
Sindri cutting off his words at 1:31:31 when Jack pulled out his bow was the most perfect timing ever.
fr XD
I love how after Kratos says “she’s dead!” Even the octopus is like “holy f**k dude”
Kratos said that the story being told on the giant's wall was his son's, it seems that this game is continuing that theme.
GOOD LUCK BROTHER
Good luck my friend we will miss you 😢
Just kidding 😂
GOOD LUCK BROTHER! I'll be joining you in the next year or so when it comes out on PC
May your journey be great BROTHER but I'm still broke and will wait until PS5 became cheap.
I really love how Mimir has this relationship of trust with Kratos. Kratos actually values Mimirs advice alot
This is a bit of a random comparison to make but those Moments of Mimir and Kratos talking one on one reminds me of the show home improvement where sometimes Tim Allen would just go talk to his next door neighbor over the fence and his neighbor would offer helpful advice
I love that
I'm watching that currently and the guy over the fence is Wilson
The difference between Atreus and Kratos is so cute to me, the way Atreus tries to break the chest like his father was absolutely adorable. Kratos is a brute force type of man and Loki has lots of tricks and other ways to go about things
