Got to admit Ethan Winters just shrugging and going, "Yeah, sure I'm your guardian angel Michael" is probably the most "Ethan Winters" thing imaginable.
Puberty am I right? Edit: the more you think "I'll be fine" the worse it will be, probably. It took me a second to notice that they warned me and that it's just life. Screw life. Although they could educate us more on sex Ed and stuff such as
I think the funniest part of this playthrough is the fact that there's this mystical writing named 'Michael' that essentially goes, "It's dangerous to go alone, take this," then hands you a glock.
I love how accurate this is. All I hear when I read this was the song “It’s dangerous to go alone” about link but it’s even funnier the fact Ethan is just being sarcastic too like yea rose sure. The only helpful thing in this mold world is a magic Angel names micheal and TOTALLY not your mold dad
I love how they get to basically have father-daughter time and it's almost adorable seeing them do this. The text is magical and just you know it's Ethan. You know he's protecting her the best he can and it makes it so touching cuz he sees himself in her with how stubborn she is.
This is definitely closure for the winters family. I know the next game will fall heavily into BSSA and the zombie that Chris found. So it'll definitely be about that. I just hope they bring in certain characters back
I honestly have to say that Ethan winters is my favorite RE character...like ever... he's LITERALLY just a dad.... with a shotgun and several missing fingers.
As much as it could be perceived as like "lazy", I LOVE how they repeated the ending and how much new weight everything holds. The ring inspection, Rose's consistency with visiting Ethan's grave (mainly because, as the DLC touched on, she wouldn't have really remembered him), why she's so quick to anger with being called Eveline, how that "I can show you things Chris doesn't know I can do" is quite literal now, and even when the agent talks about her being like her father and Rose going "I know". Also, it could be a sort of "Greatest Hits" thing, but I think the way they formatted this was quite genius. If you think about it, Rose goes through the same things Ethan does with minor changes - having to find 3 masks instead of 4 yet dealing with more enemies, solving easier puzzles in the Beneviento House yet also dealing with some of the worst experiences thanks to Eveline, fighting off Miranda to save her own father. It's all about Rose's character development and I'm here for it!
I commented pretty much the same thing on John Wolfe’s video! I’ve watched a lot of playthroughs of this and I’ve yet to see anyone actually understand why they repeated the same ending. It has so much more meaning now. Especially when he said “you’re a lot like him” and she says “I know”, we didn’t know that she had met him the first time around. I loved it.
I mainly wish you could fight the Duke, maybe invoking the memory of the Duke's charitable side at the end...and if there were snippets of the four lords that touch on "being a freak" by showing how they adapted, while also being little more than fragments forming islands bound to the seas between stratums of memory. Would offer a good sendoff to the characters, and add more depth to them and Rose...while appealing to nostalgia & fanservice.
Though what exactly can she show him? All the things she did was only possible through manipulating the mold right? Wouldn't she need access to a significant amount of it to do that mold branch thing?
@@elizawulf8180 I think this would honestly be a good fight too, since that was one of my only real gripes about this. They kinda wrote off Duke as "just a memory" - I mean, you get to fight Eveline, why not Duke? Then again, it'd be kind of hard to make a boss fight when he's supposedly stuck to one place, but still! Would've been much cooler.
@@coranbaker6401 Well, it doesn't really say where the mold branch comes from, but what you can assume is that it wouldn't need mold. If she says "I can show you things Chris doesn't know I can do", it's gotta be pointing to that. She learned those powers outside of Chris's control, really, considering he never showed up. I can't explain it fully, it would be more of a GAME THEORY basis, but I think that there's probably something more to it than what they explained.
This was so cute when Ethan became a physical human being and they hugged. I’m so glad that they got to meet and he saw his daughter grow up. This is why I love resident Evil so much.
I love that they didn't show his face - it wasn't about Ethan, it was about how Rose perceived him. And I like that they showed the last scene again, now with a new feel to it.
I love looking in the comments and seeing all the Ethan Winters love because I too loved his story from Resident Evil 7 through 8 and even in this DLC getting to have that closure and knowing he was able to see Rose, his daughter and show that he really was always there watching over here and show how much he loves and truly cared for her after all he went through to even save her in the first place. Ethan Winters absolutely is one of the sweetest protagonists and I personally don't really get why Jack doesn't like him even after going through his whole story start to finish but I appreciate that he's the outlier as he says
I’m in your boat completely. I never thought anyone would replace Leon as my fave. But Ethan has 10000% taken over. He’s awesome and I never got why Jack never liked him much in the OG play through. I’m here for the Ethan love!
It’s so strange, I remember when RE7 came out and I was thinking “Well the game looks like a cool return to form, but ugh, we have to play as some rando? This is going to suck.” Now, after two games, god damn. Ethan Winters has become one of my favorite characters. Just an all around chad-like character. I’m sad to see him go, but man, it was an excellent ride.
I see why tbf. He’s pretty much a blank slate character when he was introduced w the idea that he can sort of be a self insert, everyday guy caught in the whole mould mess. He’s definitely grown as a character and a different type of protagonist that really is just a normal guy who cares about his family. I don’t really like him but I think it’s cause people compare him to more traditionally badass characters like Leon or Ada
I think that was the point, that Rose didn’t willingly use her powers to the maximum until she took them back, and faced her fear and trauma. She spent the whole story rejecting her powers and mold identity. From the Beneviento house, we see she has trauma from her powers leaking out in school, and probably spent the better part of her life suppressing them, and not using them. So in that it makes sense that she would neither know how to use them, nor want to use them and rely on the guns. It wasn’t until her father was in danger, that she knew she wasn’t alone, that she faced her fears and embraced her unusual identity.
yeah, though I kept expecting that the twist would be that K, under orders from Umbrella, was manipulating Rose into embracing her powers by sending her in there.
It can be explained away easily, but it would have been better if they'd shown off her life a bit beyond just expository lines. Just a glimpse into her school life would've helped a lot with establishing her character, why she's a person we should like and why she's shunned beyond "she sweats white stuff sometimes". Again, is it sufficient to understand the plot? Yes. But it doesn't help you connect with the character. This is exactly why Ethan is also considered a bland/flat character, we don't really get to know these people that well beyond what's on the surface and the stuff they say is kind of generic
@@thesecondderivative8967 also the fact that even though you interact with him, he's still dead in the real world. Kinda like how all the promotional stuff for TLOU2 didn't show Joel's face. A face is a person, and not showing a face means that the character isn't really there anymore
Honestly the repeating setting of the DLC made perfect sense given the context, you're inside the megamycete and its built on the memories of those who've died in proximity, also it was molded by mother miranda so it makes sense. Each piece is based on mirandas and ethans memories so it wouldn't have made sense to make all new areas. I personally found it interesting to see the same settings but distorted and changed with the mold stuff. and then the beneviento house in the dlc was honestly way more horrifying than even the base game version. I enjoyed it, it was a nice extension of the re8 gameplay and story. For me, the highlight is the mercenaries mode playing as chris, heisenburg and Lady D they did so good making each of those characters play unique and super super fun. I honestly wish I could play the whole game as Lady D
Of course it makes sense when you set up the megamycete as a kind of dreamscape, but it is undeniably a design choice made so they can recycle environments. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it is a smart decision, saving lots of extra development
@@BUGHUNTER6 I'll tell you why its deniable..................................................................................................................................................................................................Not everyone actively seeks negativity within things. Furthermore without possessing the minds of the developers one can only speculate from an outside view fueled by feelings both petty and pure. @@kirbymon1154 Lmao, you're the only one labeling it as something negative. I said it's smart and there's nothing wrong with it. But yeah wow, you really burst my ego bubble with your giant brain 👏👏
The bit with the Winters' original house had me in tears despite how short it was. I didn't grow up with a dad myself (way different circumstances from Rose though) and Ethan's letter to her just made me lose it. It's reminding me a bit too much of what could've been, y'know? Then bam, Eveline popped up and I don't have time to process my daddy issues because I'm scared lmaooo
Bro the same happened to me, this game struck so many tears just for not having a father, It really knows how to tug at your heart, fear and sadness wise.
I lost my dad at a very young age and cried at several points during the game when I played it, and have teared up every time I’ve watched a let’s play. Especially when rose says “sometimes I think about what my life would have been like if my dad hadn’t died” I sobbed the first time I heard that, because it resonated with me so hard.
Seeing Ethan as an in-game character was a great touch. Just him running around with a shotgun, blasting whatever got in his way. Felt like the REmake during co-op sections with Barry, Chris, etc.
Agreed! usually I'm not TOO spooked or weirded out by a horror gameplays but I hated everything about that scene it did such a good job nope/10 never recommend
I was so looking forward to Jack noticing there's more than one mannequin. The way he stumbled into the third one backwards and got scared. Oh god. So funny!
That end cutscene makes SO much more sense now with the context. I originally thought that rose just got all of Ethan's memories from the mold's hive mind thing that it seems to have going on, but this makes a LOT more sense than that. Especially with the Eveline line. It hit the first time, but the second time with context (after Ethan essentially dies twice 💀) I feel hits even harder
Less than an hour and a half in, and I love that Ethan (assuming "Michael" is Ethan) isn't doing the cliche "you don't have to change yourself" thing. He understands that she's hurting and he trusts that using the crystal will help her
To be honest, both approaches have their merits. There are times when you shouldn’t have to change yourself to suit others around you, and it can be empowering to come through difficult experiences(the bullying), and feel proud of your identity, which is something we are born with. Parents are there to remind you of that and support you, not let their kids give in to pressure, change themselves and become meek, that they will regret later-. I’m also reminded of a Bruce Lee quote, "Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one." It’s a powerful and valuable message. Ethan here does advise her to leave, but doesn’t have time or the means to explain why(she’s not a freak, she doesn’t have to change, oh and she will face grave danger etc), so he does what he can to protect her and show her where to go. You can bet if he was alive and could speak, he wouldn’t let her go through with that whole experience, and would be saying those cliched things. I enjoyed how it was implemented and it made sense in this game. Cliches and tropes are fine so long as they are written and performed well in books, movies and games. They are cliches because they are popular but done to death with little originality. I’ve seen far too many stories which upturned common story tropes but were just as awful, if not more, than those they were trying to challenge.
@@makasete30 my perspective was purely praise on the fact that they didn't follow the cliché. Although, I do like it when parents support their child in big changes, whether those changes are socially influenced or not. For example, I have a lot of transgender friends. For most of them, their parents didn't necessarily like the fact that they transitioned, but they supported them regardless, because they trusted my friends to do what's best for them. When it comes to ethan, he doesn't want his daughter to change herself, especially if it's for peer pressure, but he trusts that she knows what will make her happy, and he is willing to help her get there.
I think he knows how much of a burden it must be on her. She didn't ask for any of it just like Ethan and Mia didn't ask for anything they went through. The mold literally caused all of their problems, so of course she wants nothing to do with it, and he'd probably feel the same way.
This dlc honestly gave me the closure I needed I felt so awful after Ethan’s death literally sobbing over all he did for his family, so happy he got to see rose, that Ethan was able to show her how much he loves her and roses ultimate choose (although I saw it coming a mile away knowing she’d leave with her powers) the ending, although it is the same it all sorta made sense now, and that smile she gave felt a bit more knowing this time, yes she’s smiling cause she’s going to see her dad but it also felt like she was smiling at us. It makes more sense now that the reason she got in that car with him has to due with the fact that she kept her powers and the lines she said to him carry more weight. Also they still did an OUTSTANDING job with house beneviento level still being just as terrifying of a level the second time. Also I couldn’t stop laughing about how they kept Ethan’s face out of the camera almost too well then that one singular shot of his face made me cackle. I enjoyed this a lot imo
I got to watch GabSmolders' video first which was a full playthrough as well.. it's so cool how each player adds their comments and reactions and it changes the experience. Well done by all
Whoever was in the art design department and was put in charge of the Beneviento House, bravo! You struck gold in terms of what makes something effing TERRIFYING
I can't believe Sean wasn't invested in Ethan as a character, even after playing as him as the MC, and seeing through all his hardships in 2 huge hit games. When he died, I literally cried for 10 minutes because to me, he had become so much more than just a 3D character in a game. We literally lived through his life and all his struggles to save his loved ones, Mia being the one in RE7 and Rose being the one in RE8. I just couldn't help but empathize with him on a deeper level. When him and Rose finally talked to each other as father and daughter, I started tearing up damn. I guess everyone has a different perspective when it comes to characters. To me, Ethan was just so special and I could never get over his death in RE8 😔
I mean, unfortunately everything you just described about his character wasn't explored much in the actual game, he was mostly just a 1 note character they made for the player to just use. Anything else about him is either superficial or just looking into it too deeply
@@LORDdrPepper But what is there to Explore. Did we need the game or the characters to tell us how He feels And how tough it was. We litterally played as him, saw his reactions And experiances with the mold.
Absolutely. RE7 and 8 were unquestionably the most personal stories they told. Makes sense they decided to make them first person. I hope I can have even half the strength and determination Ethan Winters had if I needed to protect my loved ones.
@@Agent719 Yes I completely agree! I also think the first POV contributed a lot as well, cinematically speaking. Also I saw a lot of people saying that they finally had the closure they needed with this DLC, and I honestly couldnt agree more
As someone who was bullied a lot as a child, a lot of this really hit home. I can see how it may be a bit cheesy or cliche to someone who wasn't bullied, but it really does stick with you into your adult life even. You can heal and move on, but there's still an ever present sting of pain and loneliness that will always be there. Growing up alone and picked on and bullied is extremely isolating and damages self esteem and confidence, it makes you think that even when you're capable of growth that you're still held back and it takes a lot of thoughtfulness to break those habits and ideas. This was a lot longer than I meant but it's just to say they portrayed it really well in the game, and it made her decision to keep her powers and what made her Rose all the more compelling
"[...] but it really does stick with you into your adult life even." Man, if that ain't the understatement of the year... I was bullied CONSTANTLY from Kindergarten until senior year. I dealt with a lot of frenemies (ah, the bitchiness of girls), and I never had close friends until adulthood. It gave me permanent trust issues, a more surly disposition, and probably made me a metalhead. 😂 The last part doesn't bother me, of course, but the major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, PTSD, trust issues (that were apparently well-founded in adulthood), and paranoia have made my life hard. People proving they haven't matured since junior high makes it even harder.
To me, it's a cliche because the trope is overused and tends to be taken to its extreme. It's also used to get people to sympathize with a character instead of creating a character with a personality people can relate to. She just as easily could not be bullied and saw her abilities as an inconvenience, like the sweat, and became paranoid about people finding out. An anxious loner afraid of people seeing her as different. But yeah, bullying sucks and leaves lots of mental and physical scars.
@@depressantdrug idk, I don't really see it as a cliche because it's just real. Bullying happens a lot and it makes for either a strong hearted, anxious individual or a bottled up keg ready to explode. Rose came through as stubborn, headstrong, sensitive, and compelled by positive morals. She still had personality, and it can be done well, I guess where I see it the storytelling device would feel cliche or overused to those who either aren't as affected by or haven't experienced that kind of trauma. It definitely depends on the extent of the bullying and how isolated it made a person feel, etc.
@@alitalkz Yes, bullying is real, but when used by the media, it becomes a trope. The purpose of a bullied character is to make them sympathetic. But there are plenty of ways to make a character relatable without using the bullied trope. If it's necessary to the story and done right, great. But this was used as a plot device to encourage Rose to get rid of her powers. Again, plenty of other ways to get that through. You can have a history of being bullied and still see it as overused. This isn't about downplaying bullying; it's about the portrayal of bullying by the media.
I cried way too much watching this. I was so emotionally attached to this storyline and watching Ethan do everything just to keep his daughter safe is the best thing ever. Still crying 😭
@@SansDiamond your right MARIO YAHOO! atleast your not chris pratt - LUIGI. btw you know why i didnt made me cry because it happened to me i think i dont have to explain it further you know what i am talking
@@haarisajmeri9811 I mean okay but just let people enjoy and or be emotional about something, even if it's a game. I'm sorry about whatever you went through but going around trying to invalidate every comment you disagree with will not help those feelings and traumas. Hope everything gets better soon
Jack not being invested in Ethan baffles me. He was the most relatable character in the Resi series to date. He was just a normal dude pulled into some weird shit wanting to protect the people he loves. He wasn't some trained badass like Chris, Leon or Jill, he was just a dude. Not to mention we got to play through him, see his reactions to everything, hear his thoughts as he moved through the game. It wasn't lots of big, loud, stick in your mind moments like the badass characters get. It was little moments like his reaction to finding out Rose was dead, the hope that there was a chance to save her. All through 7 and 8 there are moments like that, that really let us connect with him as a character. Personally I think he's the best character they've made and seeing him get a moment with Rose and for her to meet him was so bittersweet. My only complaint is that she couldn't save him some how. Yes, I know it would have been a bit of a cop out if they had a happy ending, but honestly, I'm so bored of every TV show, movie and video game having a bittersweet ending. I don't remember the last time I watched or played anything that just ended with a genuinely good, happy ending.
It's funny too because in the main games, Ethan and Jack would say the exact same things word for word when reacting to events in the game. Jack is probably just bias
Even now I feel so bad for Eveline, I know she is a dark and twisted character who has done horrible things but in the end I can't let go of the fact that she's still just a child. One that suffered so much. She just wanted a family.
@@TheLastPr1ngle If you really think about it- it kind of is lmao. she was literally designed to be a bio weapon. Plus, while she looks like a 10 year old, that’s only her physical age. It’s clear no matter what physical age she’s at, she has the mindset of a child. That could be the mindset of a 5 year old. Also, eveline wasn’t really “evil” until she had to endure a long boat trip without treatment/stabilization. So she’s an incredibly mentally ill child that was designed for combat. Is it really her fault that she snapped? Or is it maybe.. the fault of the people who created her? If you train a dog to bite every human it meets, is it the dogs fault? Or yours?
No not completely but just because she's a child doesn't mean that it's alright and while yes she did want a family that doesn't justify what she did and continues to do lol, If anyones to blame it's the umbrella corp.
isn't it implied in 7 though that she wants a family because that's how she was made to be, like part of her genetics to seek out a family to have people trust her more? she's a bio weapon still
I do wish we got to see Ethan’s face at the very end for that emotional impact, but I enjoyed Ethan’s story and I really like the way this ended! Refreshing to have a good ending with actual closure. Edit: On the other hand, I see why not showing Ethan’s face worked so well. He’s just a father doing everything in his power to protect his family. Having that relatability in an world no one can relate to really grounded the story.
Holy crap the mannequin part was ULTRA scary and it was done SO WELL... down to their design, their movements, the sounds they make, and the atmosphere of the level... Creeped the hell out of me 😭
My body kept getting absolute waves, like physically, of pure NOPE. Kept feeling it just thrumming through my body. HELL NO no thank you. I'd rather pull out a finger nail than to ever deal with that in real life. Ugh no
Do you know what makes me sad the most about 7 and 8? That Eveline, at her core, just wanted to be loved. She just wanted to have a father and a mother, she just wanted to be a normal girl and she lashes out like a teenager would do. It feels like a single person reaching out and just being there for her in the right way would have given her a chance and that just ... hurts.
yes it's very sad. she was purposefully created to want the affection of a family, but was rejected by her creators. I wonder though, since the Bakers' consciousness were connected to the megamycete.. if Eveline then knew deep down why it was wrong what she did to them
@@kiraoshiro6157 Well, she is a child. She probably didn't know. Considering she didn't show any form of regret either in the DLC or in Village, chances are very low that she really had this for of connection to them.
From what I remember margarite baker really cared for her from what it seemed and the bakers were genuinely nice people, but Evelyn still manipulated them and destroyed their family.
@@kiraoshiro6157 Eveline was also rejected by Mother Miranda when she was creating possible vessels for her baby (way back in the main game where you find Miranda's secret lab and her connections with the mold and even Umbrella Corp.)
She may have wanted affection but she’s doing it in the wrong way like in re7 they were trying to help her but then she cursed everyone and turned them all into monsters then later one when they try to reason with her she still wants to act like the monster she is all she had to do was actually act normal she may want to be like a normal girl with a normal family but she can’t do that when she isn’t willing to try and act normal they wanted to be there for her but she decided to ruin their lives
I get why people would think 7 and 8's story aren't the best or even good, but I think the reason why I find myself so invested in Ethan and his story is because I always cry like a baby with any father saving/protecting daughter type of story since I never got to have a good father myself.
This story is genuinely so heart wrenching as an only kid with a single dad. The relationship between a father and a daughter is unique and special, and I know my dad isn't perfect but he would fight just like Ethan. Just like many dads would fight for their daughters. I genuinely cried at the end, they did a really good job with the emotions in the DLC.
it hits me the opposite. my dad and step dad both suck. at nearly 40 years old, stories like this still make my heart hurt because i have two "dads" but neither are worth a damn. im really glad you two have good fathers! charish them
I began watching this game on Mark's channel, but it's so nice to be able to see it all in one go. Thanks, Jack! You've grown to be one of my favorite UA-camrs recently.
same here actually!! watched on Mark's channel cause he's so great to watch, but couldn't help but come see the full gameplay. I'm also beginning to like Jack as well
Whoever made the doll house segments in the base game and DLC needs to make an entire horror game with just that shit. They know exactly how to make things scary AF
They always made me giggle because they reminded me of cats peepin' around the corner after you ruffle a treat bag :p but yes that mannequin hunting bit was very well designed!
@@Otsena my man I commend you for thinking of it like that, everytime I watch the animations with the sound effects and all, it made me want to piss my pants out of pure terror
That was ABSOLUTELY terrifying. I'm glad I only watched it. 😂 I actually had to skip through some of it because it was making me so tense! That was a really well-done segment.
When she's talking to Ethan after defeating Miranda, ik its supposed to be a super heartfelt scene or whatever, but I just couldn't stop laughing at how they kept covering Ethan's face
I feel like this dlc has so much more impact when you love Ethan as a character and his and roses story. Like Resi 8 was my intro to the resi games and because of that Ethan is my favorite protagonist. I love this idea of a regular guy getting stuck in this crazy world he wanted no part in originally and the whole thing of him doing it solely for his family and him constantly keeping going no matter what for them, Its his self sacrificing nature that i love and it's what makes that final talk with rose so impactful. The fact that rose tells it to Ethan ' All you've ever done is protect me' when he's feeling like he failed her and the fact that she lets him know 'It's okay, i'm okay' almost like her reassuring Ethan that it's okay for him to let go and rest finally after years of torture due to the monsters he's faced. Rose gets closure in embracing her powers and knowing who her dad is and that he's proud of her and all she's achieved and Ethan gets her blessing that he did a great job protecting her and that it's okay for him to rest now. I think it ends the Winters' story so nicely with closure in both characters and it is heartbreakingly sad and that's why I love it. I really wouldn't care if rose came back as a main game protag but I don't think its necessary. she's embraced these powers and knows her worth now it's really not needed for her to go into massive fights. Unlike Ethan It would be great if she put herself first and lived the life her dad wanted her to live a normal one and we get a new or old protag for the next games
because we play as rose in the shadows of rose DLC and rose getting her powers, i do feel like resi 9 will be rose as a main protagonist, mainly since the shadows of rose expansion is 100% canon and is alive, together with Mia also being alive somewhere, which i can also see as a protagonist, reason i see rose is due to her having training with Chris and the B.S.A.A making her more skilled, i would love for a resi game with rose as a 16 year protagonist, facing enemies while also fighting off demons of her own in a way. it'd be pretty cool, the ending of the DLC kinda hints at more to come
I’m glad that other people seem to really enjoy Ethan’s character because for so long I thought I was maybe an outlier or just super easy to please with new characters. I really love Ethan as a character. I don’t think he’s one-dimensional at all. He’s thrown into an unbelievable situation and has to either roll with the punches to save himself and his loved ones, or he and his family dies. He puts his loved ones before himself, he deals with scary situations using comedy (though sometimes he can’t help himself and shows his horror), he is tenacious and doesn’t give up (especially when his family is involved). And yes, he doesn’t have much character development or exploration, which is a shame. But I also think that there is something to be said about someone who knows what his values are and is consistent with those values over the course of years, even after his life is turned upside down. And even though they may have made it 1st person pov to make Ethan literally a player insert (also why they may have not shown his face), when I was playing I felt that instead of being an insert, I was watching his story play out through his eyes. Others will of course have a different experience with this and will see him differently. I personally love Ethan Winters and wish we could’ve seen more of him (and yes, the end of RE8 and parts of this dlc made me a bit teary-eyed😅). I am curious to see how Rose will play into future games, I hope they develop her character a bit more (b/c unlike Ethan, Rose is a teenage girl where a ton of development generally happens in a short period of time). And yes, the Beneviento part was probably one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen/played, very well done! Thanks for playing Jack!
Exactly my thoughts, you said it all perfectly. I have a big soft spot for Ethan. He really grew on me over the course of the two games. It was the little things that made me grow to like him. He didn't have to have a big character arc for me to appreciate his values and his character. Not showing his face didn't make me any less invested either, I think that was actually an interesting and different way of telling a character's story. I'd almost call it refreshing.
I’m sorry to tell you but the devs said that the winters family will no longer return and this dlc was the last you will see of rose which I think is totally bull bc the ending of the dlc gave me so many questions that I want answers to you have no idea how much I want rose to have her own game but they said rose will not return
OMG yes, it's the same thing I say about the Hogwarts Legacy MC! Like, if a character does a particular thing consistently, that BECOMES character traits! Ethan is a sarcastic, dry, stoic guy with bad one-liners who loves his family more than anything and I love that subtle character building when he comments on enviromental things during the games and the way he's so dayum stubborn, even with Heisenberg when he really could have taken that deal. Like, it doesn't need to be big and flashy to be character building, the very act of going through the game is his character building, my dude coulda peaced out five mins into RE7 but he didn't and that takes balls of steel and they bother to make it really clear how hard it is for him to keep going, making him get hurt so much and fumbling 80% of the time, that shows tenacity, (and Hogwarts Legacy's MC is a polite stoic savage survivor haha). And I feel like there's something to say about writers not wanting to disappoint viewers by painting a picture too clearly, leaving room for imagination, like with his expression at the end, so I don't mind not seeing it, it's not as important as Rose's expression is to him ya'know? They really nailed that cringy protective overbearingly sappy dad vibe in RE8, and you gotta give props to the VA for managing to say those cheesy lines without laughing xP
I could write a whole novella about Resi 7/8 but I’ll start with this. This story is both amazing and dissatisfying all at the same time. I think it was the correct choice to keep Ethan dead at the end, but I think the scene Sean was talking about with his hand falling and seeing Ethan’s face would have been poignant. I also think that the moment where she sees Eveline crying on the floor could have been prolonged- Rose finding out exactly who Eveline was and realizing that they’re two sides to the same coin could have been brilliant. I still think Eveline should have continued with her trying to kill Rose, but showing off that she’s literally just a lonely, twisted child would have struck a different kind of chord. After saying all of that though, I love how persistent Ethan was/is. I think that it was a good choice to have her walk the same path that Ethan did, but she survived, because she’s ultimately different than her dad.
it's also cool to point out that the girl on the bus is the same model as eveline just with glasses ans different clothes ans has the same va as her imo eveline got reincarnated ans finally has the happy family she wanted for so long the little girl even acts like her too too logical for her age as eveline was a child with a mature mind that grew up too fast
I love how she went through similiar to what Ethan went through, it was parallel and showed how similiar she was to her dad. It also makes it feel like she is retracing his memories which was kind of the point of going in to begin with.
I know a lot of people don’t think Ethan is that great, but he’s the only character in any RE game that’s made me tear up. For me, 7 was great with the storyline of how the mold and Eveline got to the Baker home and the aesthetic of the bayou. I do like 7 better than 8, but 8 still had some good stuff. The ending of 8 really got me with the music and the overall feelings of how Ethan just died.
Not gonna lie the house section made me cry, because Ethan reminds me of my dad. Thankfully, he's still with me, but just the love he has for his daughter, the memories, and his protection- it makes me so happy to see a good dad in video games. I wish everyone could have a father as wonderful as Ethan
It's nice to see how (a) an actual child would grow up with weird powers around normal kids and (b) see her come to accept herself, powers and all. To see, at the start, how she panics over the mold veins on her hands, frantically brushing them away, and how that changes throughout the story. Like Sean sarcastically commented, "good message for the kids, if people dont like something about you, change it, instead of finding better friends", the message is her changing her mind. The end also helped explain why comparing her to Eveline triggered her so much, shes actually interacted with them. All in all, good use of recycled assets.
Genuinely throughout the last part of this playthrough, all the stuff with Rose and her dad, it genuinely brought me to tears, and I couldn't hold it back.
Honestly, I was really hoping that Evelyn and Rose would have some sort of bonding moment. Rose relates to being treated like a weapon by some people and connecting to Evelyn's desire for a family while seeking out a connection to her dad. I just felt it would have helped tie up Evelyn's story. Instead, they just use Evelyn as a one-off villain to just be evil while still throwing in lines about how she wants a family and to be loved.
The way they wrote that final scene was extremely gut wrenching. The way Rose reacts "what now?", just dismissing wholesale that whatever bothers Eveline doesn't matter.... Rose reminded me of my abusive mother. I couldn't care less about Rose, she was as moldy and inhuman as ever by not trying to understand Eveline's situation or feelings. No wonder the girls in school hate her. She has no feelings
@@KuueenKumisaying she has no feelings is a bit much. She even tried to comfort Eveline when she was crying, as she understood how she felt. She had no friends because she was bullied for being different. While I empathise with what you've been through, acting like she's completely heartless is a bit much.
This DLC was a rollercoaster of emotions. It had me freaking out at the House Beneviento part but sobbing at the father-daughter moment at the end. That was a nice closure to the Winters family :')
The winters house sequence really hit home for me, I lost my father to cancer when I was young, and all my life I’ve had the same questions that rose had and honestly wish I could get an answer. Not gonna lie when I say I cried at the letter
i never had a good relationship with my dad (still dont, but its better) so it was touching to see a loving father, it always gets me in games and movies. probably one of my favorite parts of the game
I just recently lost my dad to cancer too, though I'm 25 now. I cried at the letter and at the end when the Winters finally reunite, where 'last words' were exchanged. Didn't get those with my dad, so even though it's a game, I'm glad Rose did.
Ethan knows about the 4th wall and doesn't want us making fun of him so one of his powers are that he knows where the 4th wall cameraman is and hides his face from it
her not knowing that "micheal" is her dad and still saying I was hoping for a pony but this will do combined with the look sean gave cracked me up! the writers knew what they did there XDD
For real. 😂 Even the brevity of Ethan's writing reminds me _so_ much of my dad whenever we're texting back and forth. I tend to be verbose, he just says what needs to be said. 😂
I really love Rose as a main character. I would love to see more of her story. I have a neurological disorder and so I have tics and seizures so having people call me a freak and not wanting to be friends is something I relate to. If there was a magic crystal that could get rid of that for me I would do it too haha. I also really love eveline's character as she reflects her own insecurities on Rose. I think this DLC was awesome and super fun to watch. I like how they kept it similar to Ethan's journey as a beginning to hers. I feel like they will probably give her her own stroryline now that she has her intro.
I think they are scared that people are gonna be dissapointed of his face since they imagined him to look different. But I agree, shame that they didn't show his face in the cutscenes. They could have made their reunion so much more emotional, like, she finally got to meet her dad! There should be so much more emotion!
Yeah the arm in front of his face and all that really cuts from the impact of those scenes. It almost feels like they're trolling at this point when it would have been so much cooler for us and Rose to see his face for the first time together.
I think the point of Ethan not having a face was to help heighten the immersion in RE7 and RE8. Giving us a faceless protagonist to make us feel a little more like WE are Ethan. By now the devs kinda have to keep his face hidden to stay on brand. Kinda like how the biggest secret in the Halo franchise is what 117 looks like without a helmet.
RE7 and 8 are really special for me because we got a character like Ethan Winters, who is NOT Chris/Leon/Jill/Claire or any of the other canon cast because those the characters that IF you try to take them in a non-conventional direction you'd possibly get a lot of hate from the hardcore fans, those are the established idols that CAN'T change. Which is why Ethan is the most special for me at least, a relatable every man pulled into an unfathomable situation and despite of knowing there's no going back does everything he can to take care of his family - true chad of a human being. And I love that Capcom brought him in and gave him a respectable outing because they're smart enough to know that they can't do anything like this to the core cast. Still, bringing in a new protagonist, making him so relatable and likable, getting players invested in his journey and parting ways with him when the time comes - hats off to Capcom!
The game: puts you through the memories of the virus and everyone it affected. Also the game: still manages to mix it up, despite reusing assets. Jack: “This is basically the exact same game”
I really love Sean's commentary It makes the gameplay a hundred times better It's amazing how he always comes up with jokes on the spot ! And how he makes ACCURATE guesses about the story EVERY.TIME. like wow
Okay. It’s official. The Winters house scene has me CRYING. Like I should have expected to cry. The winters arc makes me bawl every time. Also the amount of happiness I felt seeing Ethan again should be embarrassing. I still think his time in RE was too short
Well, yeah. He was there for just 2 games. But he still stands out from 2 other main male RE protagonists: Chris and Leon. Ethan is just a regular dude, and was still able to make it through this nightmare. Twice. And the fact that Ethan obviously has WAY less fight experience than Leon and Chris makes me respect him even more.
Ethan has... an actual character to him. Chris for many games felt rather undeveloped, which was my main complaint of RE characters: they have so little backstory! We don't see much character development! I can at least say Leon between 2 and 4 showed some more steeliness to his character, hence why he could face the situation with more grit... and humor. Cheesy as his one liners were, they were definitely part of his charm. One ofdball character I really liked was Parker Luciano. He was different and adorable. Loved him.
the difference between jack’s playthrough and gab’s is soooo insane lmaoooo 😭 like the part where gab was hiding from the big moldy daddy and tried to avoid getting seen and jack goes into hard CHAOS mode and just runs around making mold jokes over and over again 😭 i can’t-
Wanna say thanks, Jack, for joking through the sad daddy parts. Lost my dad a few months ago.... it helped to see someone else also feeling those twinges, but also trying to laugh through it. I wanna see more Rose. Like oothers have said, I think the mirror of her experience is fun and I look forward to seeing her more. I think it'd be neat to see, like... her growing further. especially since I think I trust they can do more depth than just "scary badass girl"
I was so emotionally distraught at the end of RE8 because I love Ethan so very much so this DLC does soothe a lot of the wounds from that. I know it's silly cause he's just a game character but I still can't watch his death scene so I really appreciated what they did here with him. I think actually they left his story super open ended same with Rose so I'm happy with it. :)
I never had a father figure in my life and seein this through the end genuinely made me emotional. Not all are fortunate enough to have a second chance and meet their father or any relative. I really like this DLC
I know people have hacked the game a long time ago to see what Ethan's face looks like, but I still love that they don't show it, even in the most emotional of scenes. That's some real commitment to the bit that I can respect. He does have some long, luscious eyelashes tho. 2:42:09
Thank you for putting it all in one video. It’s currently 2:30am and I’m still up writing a research proposal and the sound of Jack getting jumpscared is my only form of sanity. Keep up the good work Jack!!

Got to admit Ethan Winters just shrugging and going, "Yeah, sure I'm your guardian angel Michael" is probably the most "Ethan Winters" thing imaginable.

I have to give props to Capcom for being able to make the House Beneviento section the scariest part of any Resident Evil game *TWICE.*
i physically cant complete the game because i dont want to spend another second in that dreadful house
For real. They somehow managed to make it even scarier.
The mannequins were horrifying, can’t say the same about the dolls though.
going back there brought back unpleasant memories for me
Which do you think was scariest the baby or the dolls ?
"Being a teenager is way scarier than being a mold baby." Truly words to live by
I'd rather be a mold baby than an a teenager any day, haha
Puberty am I right?
Edit: the more you think "I'll be fine" the worse it will be, probably. It took me a second to notice that they warned me and that it's just life. Screw life. Although they could educate us more on sex Ed and stuff such as
I sooooo agree!!!
Sheesh; I wonder how Rose will/would reaction to seeing “Lady D.” And or zombies and/or the three sisters/ladies??!!
💀💀
I think the funniest part of this playthrough is the fact that there's this mystical writing named 'Michael' that essentially goes, "It's dangerous to go alone, take this," then hands you a glock.
Yup, it's basically "guardian angel approves of violence" (Though it's technically for protection, but yeah)
Yuep definitely Ethan
Lol That was SO Res Evil one. Awful voice acting, but that part is one of the top faves in the game.
Thats my name!
I love how they get to basically have father-daughter time and it's almost adorable seeing them do this. The text is magical and just you know it's Ethan. You know he's protecting her the best he can and it makes it so touching cuz he sees himself in her with how stubborn she is.
When he says stubborn I can almost imagine him laughing and being like yep you’re definitely my daughter
It felt like closure honestly
This is definitely closure for the winters family. I know the next game will fall heavily into BSSA and the zombie that Chris found. So it'll definitely be about that. I just hope they bring in certain characters back
@@flashergoldpower15 if the next game does fall heavily towards the BSAA, im hoping sheva comes back

I honestly have to say that Ethan winters is my favorite RE character...like ever... he's LITERALLY just a dad.... with a shotgun and several missing fingers.
and just a "slight" bit of mold and undeadness :)
He's not just a dad, he's THE DAD
The responses to this comment are such s teir idk what to do lmao
Leon is way better imo
There's something refreshing about having the hero being basically a normal guy. Aside from the whole mold revenant thing.
This whole DLC is just Ethan going "Are ya winning, son?"
No cuz fr 😂
More like "Are ya winning daughter "
“Are ya winning, mold?”
True💀💀💀💀
@@jackgeorge9478 Someone: You have a child? What do you have, a son or a daughter?
Ethan: A mold.
Now why tf did u feel the need to spoil it does ur mom not love u
LMAO ME
I love that they didn't show his face - it wasn't about Ethan, it was about how Rose perceived him.
This is going to suck.”
Now, after two games, god damn. Ethan Winters has become one of my favorite characters.
Just an all around chad-like character. I’m sad to see him go, but man, it was an excellent ride.
@@CimyrRazely Agreed. I'm glad you both see it that way too
AGREED COMPLETELY
Its beautiful
yeah, though I kept expecting that the twist would be that K, under orders from Umbrella, was manipulating Rose into embracing her powers by sending her in there.
I love how you get to see Ethan's full face, officially, but only for a brief, blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment.
The way they refused to show Ethan's face made it comical 😂
Only for like a split second- 🥲
I kept hoping they would put random objects in front of him to block his face 😂
I think it symbolizes the fact that Rose herself doesn't know him.
yeah i think they couldve handled that better

I’m very sorry for the both of you..
same here and then i got jump scared in the middle of sobbing
I lost my dad at a very young age and cried at several points during the game when I played it, and have teared up every time I’ve watched a let’s play. Especially when rose says “sometimes I think about what my life would have been like if my dad hadn’t died” I sobbed the first time I heard that, because it resonated with me so hard.
I was having a moment trying to sort out my emotion and that Eveline scene interrupt me
I loved every mold joke but "our house has a mold problem" is just fucking brilliant
I think it is great that when Rose heals she still pours it on her hand like Ethan did. Magic hand healing seems to run in the family.
I raise the point of ethans memories effecting her
goop juice works wonders on injuries.
Seeing Ethan as an in-game character was a great touch. Just him running around with a shotgun, blasting whatever got in his way. Felt like the REmake during co-op sections with Barry, Chris, etc.
ok but that mannequin chase scene was the most uncomfortable I've ever been watching a horror gameplay it was so GOOD
I never get scared at horror games but my God that was terrifying.
Gave me the little nightmares game vibe during the part after what you spoke about. I don't want to spoil it
Agreed! usually I'm not TOO spooked or weirded out by a horror gameplays but I hated everything about that scene it did such a good job nope/10 never recommend
The way it moved is so unsettling
I WATCHED THE WHOLE THING ON MARK'S VIDEO WITH THE SOUND OFF AND EVEN THEN I DIDN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE JUST WATCHING THEM MOVE
He understands that she's hurting and he trusts that using the crystal will help her
Such a supportive dad 🥹
YES! and she comes to that conclusion on her own! very good emotional beats here
To be honest, both approaches have their merits.
I’m also reminded of a Bruce Lee quote, "Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one."
It’s a powerful and valuable message.

@@LORDdrPepper I’m not sure what I can say to that as it seems we disagree but I understand. I respect your opinion

This was deep and as a person with extreme anxiety and mental problems this hits hard
"[...] but it really does stick with you into your adult life even."
Man, if that ain't the understatement of the year...
I honestly lived for all the conversations with her and Ethan. For how creepy the rest of the game was, those moments made me feel so warm and happy
I cried way too much watching this. I was so emotionally attached to this storyline and watching Ethan do everything just to keep his daughter safe is the best thing ever. Still crying 😭

That's not an excuse but alright
she's better off dead.

I couldn't have said it better myself
because we play as rose in the shadows of rose DLC and rose getting her powers, i do feel like resi 9 will be rose as a main protagonist, mainly since the shadows of rose expansion is 100% canon and is alive, together with Mia also being alive somewhere, which i can also see as a protagonist, reason i see rose is due to her having training with Chris and the B.S.A.A making her more skilled, i would love for a resi game with rose as a 16 year protagonist, facing enemies while also fighting off demons of her own in a way. it'd be pretty cool, the ending of the DLC kinda hints at more to come
I’m glad that other people seem to really enjoy Ethan’s character because for so long I thought I was maybe an outlier or just super easy to please with new characters.
The way Rose fell through the door but then instead of laying on the ground like an idiot, just said "nah" and closed the doors. Iconic.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think this feeling of dissatisfaction only comes with a game you really love
it's also cool to point out that the girl on the bus is the same model as eveline just with glasses ans different clothes ans has the same va as her
imo eveline got reincarnated ans finally has the happy family she wanted for so long
the little girl even acts like her too too logical for her age as eveline was a child with a mature mind that grew up too fast
@GlitchyHalo Woah I never noticed that.
@@GlitchyHalo not to mention the little girl's mom looks disturbingly like Mia too
I love how she went through similiar to what Ethan went through, it was parallel and showed how similiar she was to her dad.

Jack said "mold" more times in this playthrough than the person who invented the word mold....
Lol I got tired after like 30 minutes, yet I endured the 3 hours 👀

Yeah i think everyone felt bad for her when she was on her knees saying that nobody loved her.

Even the brevity of Ethan's writing reminds me _so_ much of my dad whenever we're texting back and forth.

In the part where they showed his face it made me hella uncomfy & he looked strange. I like that they hid it & continue to.
We as humans identify emotions through faces. We can't connect to the moment because you can't tell what Ethan is feeling..
We already know what he looks like, so why not just show his face at that point?
I love watching Jack and Mark’s different reactions to this game
This is such a masterpiece, the game, the editing, the jokes, the scares. It’s always such a joy watching him play.
As someone who just became a dad , that onesie joke had me dying! Can’t wait to use that with my wife later !!
I would also say, "Sleeping like a...well, like a baby."
Congratulations on your new parenthood!
This is so sweet, I bet you’ll be a great dad
The game: puts you through the memories of the virus and everyone it affected.
Also the game: still manages to mix it up, despite reusing assets.
Jack: “This is basically the exact same game”
They made the Beniviento house even scarier and I am too much of a baby to play it myself. Thanks for suffering for me, Jack.
I really love Sean's commentary
It makes the gameplay a hundred times better
It's amazing how he always comes up with jokes on the spot !
And how he makes ACCURATE guesses about the story EVERY.TIME. like wow
Jack is the only dude I know who can sidetrack and get me more immersed into the experience
The mannequin is genuinely the most terrifying stuff i've seen in a ResE game. The whole DLC is very, very, very good.
You arent the only one. I cried too
I bawled a waterfall there. The more she read his messages the more tears came
I'm glad he had an ending to his ark. I feel like Chris and the other original cast have been played out.
Loved him.
the difference between jack’s playthrough and gab’s is soooo insane lmaoooo 😭 like the part where gab was hiding from the big moldy daddy and tried to avoid getting seen and jack goes into hard CHAOS mode and just runs around making mold jokes over and over again 😭 i can’t-
Ethan really do be saving his family from beyond the grave. Twice.
You throw death at him he's like :
"Fair game
HOWEVER."
I’m just happy that Ethan can finally rest, he was a goddamn superhero and was a great character
This game has truly been one of the best games i have ever played thank you for being such a great influence
Only resident evil can make me both cry from fear and because of how emotional and heartwarming a moment is all in the same game.
The best thing about 10:52 is the added squeeky noise that perfectly syncs with Jacks eyes :D
love how jacksepticeye comes out with longer videos than feature length movies
I love that right at the end, the game manifested a dodge button just to satisfy Jack.
Thank you for putting it all in one video. It’s currently 2:30am and I’m still up writing a research proposal and the sound of Jack getting jumpscared is my only form of sanity. Keep up the good work Jack!!
I absolutely love this being the events before the RE8 end scene, the story makes sense and it explains Rose’s close relationship with her father
Jack: Being a teenager is hard.
Also Jack: You dirty little mold baby!
