"ill show you permanent damage ya wee fuck! kratos! throw me at him! horns first!" Mimir is one of the best comic relief characters in this last decade
I love how Kratos has become just a little less cold in this game and actually makes small talk. Now he compliments Sindri's works, commends Atreus for his improvements instead of solely criticizing his flaws, etc.. It's a small change but I think it shows his growth as a parent and a person very well.
If it helps, he does some of these changes in the previous game. My favorite moment is Atreus having a moment of profound wisdom, Mimir happily telling Kratos that the "lad's found his equilibrium", and when the little brother asks what that means, Kratos replies, "It means you speak wisely, Atreus. And that is good to hear."
@@Takejiro24 well, yes, but we see _more_ of that here which is extra lovely. (also that particular compliment you quoted is after Kratos is finally fully honest with Atreus - not just telling him he's part god - and both of them finally understand each other after their marked character development.)
39:481:15:27 There was a line of dialogue in Part 1 (at 1:30:19) where Mimir said "Isn't it nice how Fimbulwinter wore down all the helpful magic we acquired, yet somehow new terrors only flourish?", & I assume that's supposed to explain why they don't start w/ all the abilities they had in the 2018 game
I also think Thor teasing Kratos was a hint at why his physical skills have diminished. It's been a long while since the first game and he's not done much actual fighting since
Sindri struggling to unstring and re-string Atreus's bow really says something about how strong the kid is, considering Sindri's not only a grown-ass dwarf, he's a blacksmith.
"They don't explain why you lost your powers in this game" They actually do! Mimir says in the first episode that "Winter has worn down all of our useful magicks"
Kratos being angy at mimir for imprisoning a creature to use its oil for lantern is kinda funny considering he himself chopped of the head of the sun god to use as a flashlight
1:02:37 weird thing to notice but the fact that kratos was able to open these chests by himself and in the 2018 game he just had atreus there to stab the skull to make himself feel included and involved is very cute
There was actually two types of chests one like the one in this video where he doesn’t need Atreus and another where the mask if floating and has a purple aura
They were different chests, but the last statement is still true, because I remember he would let Atreus' little 3 foot self "help" push giant ass boulders knowing his little son was only doing 0.005% of the work lmaooo. Very wholesome indeed
In the little book kratos has when he updates when he meets a new character, he even says about mimir that he only ever had few friends, fewer he would call brothers when talking about Mimir 😭
Kvasir’s poems are actually Easter eggs! Each one describes a different PS4 game! The two Jack found early in the episode are describing Horizon: Zero Dawn and MLB The Show (which released as a PS4 exclusive). It took me forever to realize this so I thought I’d share
I loved hearing the dialogue between Mimir and Kratos in this episode, it really showed us how troubled Mimir is because of his past deeds, and how wise Kratos has become. Also, it's so great to see Sean having a lot of fun with this game! Can't wait for more episodes!
If you read the excerpt about mimir in the book, it entails that Kratos has grown to respect him a lot and Kratos consults him for advise frequently, and rn it seems Kratos is seeing mimir is lost and regretful and is giving him words as mimir would for him
Loving Kratos, Atreus and Mimir's character development from the previous instalment. Kratos seems like he's opening up more, especially when he gave Mimir advice to not blame himself and he's really stepped into the role of father. He was so unforgiving of himself but since learning that he can be a better person despite his wrongdoings he extends that kindness to his son and friends too. Atreus is so capable now! I like that he is still very much his own person with his inquisitiveness, compassion and cleverness but he is still a young man looking up to his father. He walks his own path but now he invites his father to walk with him, and that Kratos goes with him on his quest to find Tyr shows how much trust they have developed. It was also nice to see Mimir, who is so wise and witty normally, have a moment of insecurity and remorse. He is usually the person doling out advice so to see him on the receiving end for once really brings to attention that he too is just a person.
Fun fact: at 57:16 Atreus says "your on fire, but you probably already knew that" this is a reference to the first game voiceline where Atreas says "your on fire" and Kratos shouts "I KNOW"
Their relationships have developed so much since the previous God of War, it's so incredible to see how heartwarming their relationship has become in the time frame between the last game and this one, not to mention how natural it sounds
One thing that really stood out to me is how much Mimir and Sindri call Kratos by name. Unless I'm forgetting something, the only times Kratos' name was said aloud in the last games were in Helheim by the fake Zeus, and once by Freya during the Final Boss. It's not even clear if Brok and Sindri KNOW his name - he never introduces himself, and Mimir clearly didn't know it before Helheim since he's supposed by him being the Ghost of Sparta. It just goes to show how much trust has built up.
Ikr! Like for example the entire 1st game we watched Kratos struggle to do something as simple as put his hand on his son's shoulder and it's immediately one of the 1st things we see at the beginning of this game. Just shows how far they've come
The comedy has worked so well so far in this game. The timing and the tone of their speaking is just so on point. And it’s all so beautiful. The gameplay itself is so smooth. The combat is improved dramatically from 2018. It’s basically delivering on every aspect we wanted it to deliver on.
I love the realism of this game, even the finer details of Sindri messing up unstringing the bow and stopping his dialogue to say “ow”, all realistic things. Also stringing a recurve bow is actually quite difficult, not to down on Atreus’s strength, but it’s quite tough.
@@maul9690 I certainly don't know much about norse mythology, but even I can tell you that Fimbulwinter isn't just "ooh it's colder now". It's like the world is preparing for its end; I don't doubt that could dull magic.
40:05 they already explained it , by having kratos say "fimbulwinter wears all , even stone" and then brok saying "fimbulwinter has been harsh on her(the axe)
I had to look back at the shop scene to get the line right when I responded to someone else's comment on this. Brok says, "Looks like Fimbulwinter's been hard on our girl." I'm glad I wasn't the only one who caught that.
The way Brok was laughing at Mimir being subjected to that massive beam of light was just waaaaay too funny. I know people like Brok, and I gotta say, they are some of the funniest people I have ever met. And then the way Kratos said "I also used it for light." To Sindri when he mentioned he wouldn't need the Bifrost anymore was kind of cute. Never thought I'd use Kratos and Cute in the same context. LOL.
Just got finished watching Jack's original God of War series and I laughed so hard at this part because at the end of it, Kratos picks up the head off the bifrost room floor after having instructed the dwarves to watch him and he complains something about them having "taken a bunch of measurements and then leaving him there" 😂😂 It all ties together
"It's the beginning of Fimbulwinter, I can feel it in me balls." Yeah, I know it's been for a very VERY L O N G time now. Ragnarok is just 'round the corner, to us mates.
I haven't seen any other God of War games, so I don't know who Brok is. But that scene was the funniest scene ever. I felt like a monster for laughing so hard at him laughing at the head's pain.
I’m absolutely in love with this duology. When I heard about how the made creative decisions for the previous game. The amount of times they went ‘this is gonna be hella hard to do, but super cool.’ It’s inspirational how they pushed the art direction and made me not wanna give up my dream to work in games
The reason they provide for your weapons loosing powers in this game, is that "Fimbulwinter wears down all things, even stone" as said by kratos. Im thinking this means all his weapons slowly loose sharpness. Also when you got your first runic attack in this game, Mimir says "Shame wimbulwinter ruined all of our previously gathered runes" or something like that...
That's a good compromise in previous games they'd just straight up take all your weapons away but now they let you keep all your shit but you have to power them up again.
mimir also said that "its a shame that fimbulwinter made us lost all that magic we've acquired" o rsomething like that, he says it on the way to the temple
@@badza47 i think Mimir was just saying that the helpful magic withered away so it might have just been an environmental thing. the "I used it." makes it seem like they just wore down over time.
I’m really loving the dynamic between kraits and Mimir, Kratos only family was Atreus, but mimir has almost become like a literal brother to Kratos. Seeing the progression from the first game to now and seeing how much they’ve grown is amazing!!
I mean you also have to understand judging by how the game starts with freya pissed and them knowing she was nearby means it’s been atleast a year since the last game ended so they’ve definitely gotten close during the time hell maybe longer atreus looks like 15-16 ish whereas he was 11-12 in the last game
@@Ghostiekidsrule i think atreus is around 13 or 14 and but no later than 15 as past that would imply ragnarok has already begun. also he looks a little too short for 16
Mainly because both characters will be far more independent from eachother in this game. I'm halfway through and I can't remember the last time Kratos and Atreus were actually together for something. (And yes, Atreus does become a playable character)
30:25 That poem was a Horizon Zero Dawn reference. Beasts of metal and a red headed warrior with mysterious origins are an obvious allusion to Aloy and the machines. Very cool to see the various devs have respect for each other.
There are also hidden statues of Kratos, Atreus, and Brok and Sindri in Horizon Forbidden West, so it's cool to see that's they have references to each other
i just wanted to leave a comment and say how much i appreciate your subtle editing, whether its just little pop sounds you add to random things, the microphone when you're reading the poems and the name flip when you're explaining the music director, it all goes noticed and its really the quality that set your videos apart from the rest.
as someone whose job involves exposure to a lot of real gore, the realism in the kills (esp at 1:17:50) is phenomenal. there is always more pink than you expect in deep wounds like that
The writers did a really good job showing Kratos's love for his son Atreus, considering his tough personality. The times he holds back his anger, the light touches & even the way he looks at him is so sweet. This game looks amazing already.

@@mistashley8989 yoooo you killed him haha. And I agree, all of the characters actions in this game have been totally in line with their character. It's really cool to see a game with writers that understood how their characters tick so well.
@@slimebro3913 I came here hoping he'd mention it too. I was also disappointed that he didn't stick around to hear Atreus apologize to Sindri for his rude outburst in the last game
As for the 'they don't explain why you lose your stuff in this one', I think they already did. In the previous episode, I think it was Atreus who said that Fimblewinter was wearing down everything, even stone. I think the excuse this time is because Fimblewinter, as an apocalyptic magic winter, is so bad that it's wearing down even enchantments over time.
I loved all the callbacks to the previous games. Gives new comers an idea of how cruel, ruthless, and unforgiving he was in all the previous games and how far he's come. Revenge only begets revenge only begets revenge. Never ending cycle that Kratos tried to stop Baldur from doing. But alas....
It's interesting that Atreus assumed how Kratos spoke to Faye. Little did he know that Spartan women are just as ruthless and badass and Kratos was very reserved around his Jotun wife.
Spartan women were famous for their skill at cutting remarks and sarcasm. And Kratos’s type is totally a woman who can kick his ass and call him out on his BS. I like that when we finally get to see Faye and Kratos together in flashback, Faye is very gentle and patient with him, but she also doesn’t let him get away with anything. You can see why he took her lessons to heart
1:43:00 Kratos calls Mimir ‘brother’ for the first time ever, I think it could be because he understands Mimirs pain, as Kratos himself had done many bad things he was ashamed of as well.
I love how wise Kratos has gotten in his age. Wise, calm, and patient to an extent. Much different than the war machine he used to be in the first trilogy
Fun fact: 40:00 they do explain the lack of upgrades. Mimir during the trip to the Giant Shrine says “Funny how Thimblewinter wears down all the useful magic we have, yet new threats seem to thrive.”
I’m so glad I’ve avoided every spoiler and gameplay so I can get the full enjoyment from this series. We are only two episodes in and i am loving it, this bout to be one heck of a series!
Same! I forgot when the game would be coming out, and then I popped on UA-cam last night after work and BAM! Episode one! Now the second? Sean is spoiling us
I love how comforting Kratos is in this episode. Blunt and factual and accepting of how bad something is and how unchangeable it is, but not depressing
I love how the most unrealistic aspect of these games isn't the giant monsters and God's, but the simple fact that the boat is never tied down and somehow stays put.
I'm a little surprised Kratos is ducking under those structures as they sail underneath rather than remaining completely still while his face breaks through everything in his path. Must be getting soft in his old age... *I'm going to die now aren't I*
The person who composed the music of the game being named Bear (or having chosen to rename himself Bear, i don’t know) is super badass to me. Imagine being named Bear and composing the music for a God of War game based in Old Norse Scandinavia.
I really enjoy how Mimir and Artreus give tips on gameplay by talking to Kratos as if having a normal conversation. That's like... top tier developer idea. The most natural way to give tool tips. Edit: Sindri is best character ever made change my mind
1:38:03 damn, Kratos finally realised how cruel he was back then, he remembered the cruelty he gave to the nameless Boat Captain, "He too was robbed of his freedom and suffered because who I was and the choices I made.". We met him 3 times and heard about him 5 times ( We heard about him 1 time in GOW 2018 and once as well in GOW:Ragnarok)
Right? I didn’t want to watch the series until i finished the game and i had skipped so many side quests that i cant continue to do as my dads playing now, and its so nice to see some stuff i missed!
Side missions in this game are super important so I really hope he continues exploring everything. Some of the best runic attacks and character interactions can be totally missed if you aren’t thorough.
For anyone wondering, the second poem is about baseball. 2 armies, each 9 players strong, orb in air, branch in hand (ball, bat), a swing, a collision, the spectators stand, they fight for 9 nights and 9 days (nine innings), running then waiting then running again. Also if you look at the cover of the book when he picks it up and the drawing in the codex, there’s an image of a baseball.
39:45 They actually did explain in the last episode. It was in combat dialogue, so it was easy to miss. Mimir said "Seems Fimbulwinter dwindled your power, but you two still seem to flourish!"
It was specifically: All the good magic we got seems to dwindle due to finbulwinter *but those badguys (the Hel-raider) seem to be doing just fine*" Plus in this part Kratos saying "I used them" implying he simply...broke them all over like 3+ years.
@@Excelsius_Cerell Oh, I must've misheard that then; Thought Mim was talking about the boys. And yeah, I wrote this comment before they mentioned that about the armour.

There actually was an explanation for why all the upgrades are gone: Mimir commented last episode about how Fimbulwinter wore away all their helpful magic, about three times because Sean struggled with the difficult enemy
I like how Jack said they don’t explain how you lost all your upgrades, but they literally say in the first episode that Fimblewinter wears down all magic
@@Beowulf_98 Its something mimir says in passing while Kratos is running around doing other stuff. easy to miss when playing a game and doing commentary
@@Beowulf_98 I think a lot of youtubers miss stuff, unlike playing a game at home your not entertaining a audience. People like to watch Jack for his comments and reactions, so it makes sense that he'd miss a thing or two because he is trying to put on a show. Otherwise he just stare at the screen focusing on every detail without saying anything which would be kinda boring for us. Not trying to say your wrong, just adding a reason behind it.
Yeah I saw that and hoped someone would point that out. Glad you did. Otherwise I be pretty annoyed myself. Lol. I feel like a lot of this game was well thought out and if you think otherwise theres a chance you just missed something.
Jack: I wonder why they don't have an excuse for them losing all their stuff Sindri: Hey what happened to all that armor we made you? Kratos: we used it
@Yol Riin Lask What about the axe changing to become more golden as it was upgraded? I think that happened once when Sindri upgraded it in a cutscene, which would be canon. Unless I'm wrong lol
There is an off handed explanation for why you are weaker, Mimir mentioned nonchalantly that the storm and slowly drained away the more powerful magics that they had collected over the last games
Jack overseeing odin raven when he arrived at the drawfs and never seeing it, crawls through a small passage sees a bird on the roof and kills it without thinking pretty much cracked me xD

Norse mythology(/language) breakdown: 0:38 Yes, Nidhogg ("He Who Delivers Hateful Blows") is a dragon who devours corpses and chews on the roots of Yggdrasil (the world tree). Since Yggdrasil holds the nine worlds, Nidhogg's actions also contribute to Ragnarok (the destruction of the whole cosmos). 0:51 Bifrost was the rainbow bridge leading from the Earth (Midgard) to Asgard (home of the Aesir gods). 1:50 Hræsvelgr ("corpse swallower" in Old Norse) is a giant who takes the form of an eagle, perching at the end of the world and creating the winds with the beating of its wings. 3:24 Nidavellir/Svartalfheim is the world of the dwarves. 3:30 Durlin probably is a reference to Durin, a dwarf who forged the magic sword Tyrfing. 9:55 Hreidmar as the father of Regin, Otr, and Fafnir. In some versions he was a powerful magician, in others, king of the dwarfs. After Loki accidentally killed Otr, the Aesir repaid Hreidmar with the dwarf Andvari's gold and the magic ring Andvaranaut (which could create gold, but was cursed by Andvari to bring misfortune to anyone else who had it). Fafnir killed Hreidmar to get all the gold for himself, and then became a dragon (affected by Andvaranaut's curse). Sigurd (Regin's foster child) then uses the sword Gram (repaired by Regin), kills Fafnir, and then kills Regin after he learned Reginn intended to kill him. 10:34 Einherjar (ayn-HEH-ree-aar;"those who fight alone") were elite warriors who died in battle and were chosen by valkyries ("choosers of the slain") to go to Valhalla (a majestic hall in Asgard, presided by Odin), and would eventually fight alongside Odin during Ragnarok. 14:00 "Nista!" means "to pierce" in old Norse (he says it as a way of "wishing" the arrows pierces his target, similar to "Hit!"). 26:143:24 Nidavellir is just another name for Svartalfheim (the world of dwarves - the game just considers Nidavellir to be a city in Svartalfheim, though). But yeah, that is where Brokk and Sindri made Mjollnir ("Lightning"), the hammer that was gifted to Thor. 30:27 Kvasir was a poet and the wisest man, born from the saliva of the Aesir and Vanir gods, after performing a peace ritual on spitting into a common vessel. He traveled around to spread knowledge, until he has killed by the dwarfs Fjalar and Galar, who mixed his blood with honey to create the Mead of Poetry (which gave wisdom and poetic inspiration to those who drank it). 33:01 Yes, it's said the earthquakes during Ragnarok will be so intense that all bonds, shackles and fetters will be destroyed, including the ones binding Fenrir and Loki. 36:35 "Skjálfa" means "to shiver, tremble" in Icelandic. 38:50 Not so much in Norse Mythology: whatever the Norns (Fates) determined would definitely happen, and Ragnarok was no exception (the most you could try to change is your attitude towards your fate). Even Odin, despite all of his efforts to gain wisdom and prepare for Ragnarok (including perceiving the runes used by Norns to "craft" fate, and commanding valkyries to build an army of einherjar), was ultimately unable to escape his own fate (which was being killed by Fenrir during Ragnarok). 45:16 Griep was one of Heimdallr's (the guardian god of the Aesir, who and keeps watch over the bridge that leads to Asgard) nine mothers and one of the giant Geirröðr's two daughters. Thor broke her spine when he went to Geirröðr's house to free Loki (she seems to be a different character in the game, since she's portrayed as a dwarf instead of a giant). 52:45 "Skáld" means "poet" in Icelandic. 56:20 Idun/Iðunn ("The Rejuvenating One") was an Aesir goddess keeper of the magic apples of immortality, which the gods must eat to preserve their youth. 58:48 Draugr are animated corpses (undead creatures) that inhabit their grave, often guarding buried treasure. 1:01:32 Huldra (meaning "covered" or "secret") are beautiful and seductive female forest beings. 1:05:02 Hrimthurs were giants made of ice (frost giants) who inhabited Niflheim (a land of eternal cold). 1:05:15 Thor battled (and killed) the giant Hrungnir because he started to boast he'd kill all gods after getting drunk, which annoyed Odin and the other gods who were visiting Jotunheim (the land of giants). Before dying, Hrungnir smashed a whetstone on Thor's head (creating all flint on earth), and a piece of it got lodged in Thor's forehead. Thor then asked for the sorceress Groa's help to remove it (saying he had encountered her lost husband Aurvandil and he'd soon be home), but upon hearing that she forgot her magic chants and the stone remained on Thor's head. 1:10:42 Yes, Kaðlín is a Nordic spelling of the Gaelic Caitlín, which is a form of the French Catheline. 1:22:02 Lyngbakr ("heather back" in Icelandic) is a massive whale that baits sailors by posing as a heather-covered island, sinking into the sea when a crew landed on its back (thus drowning them). 1:34:17 "Rönd" is Icelandic for "stripe, streak" or "edge, rim" 1:38:51 Fjörgyn/Jörd ("earth" in Old Norse) was a giantess, a personification of earth, mother of Thor, and mistress of Odin. 1:39:09 Skadi was a giant who married the sea god Njörd. In order to avenge the death of her father (Thiazi), she attacked the Aesir, which offered one of them as a husband in compensation for her less. She was allowed to choose a god by his legs (or feet) alone (much like a TV show), and ended up choosing Njörd thinking he was Balder (one of the most loved and beautiful of the gods). They eventually split up because Skadi wanted to live in the mountains, whereas Njörd wanted to live by the sea. 1:39:17 Starkad was an eight-armed giant and legendary hero. He is portrayed as a great warrior who performed many heroic deeds, but also many crimes. 1:41:30 Bergsrå ("mountain keeper/warden") was a mythical creature of the mountain.

Kvasir’s poems are actually Easter eggs! Each one describes a different PS4 game! The two Jack found early in the episode are describing Horizon: Zero Dawn and MLB The Show (which released as a PS4 exclusive). It took me forever to realize this so I thought I’d share
I was wondering about that! The creatures of machine and red hair, I was thinking it sounded like Zero Dawn
They're also like bastardizations of the tiles like tool and bang is ratchet and clank
There was also one for The Last of us part II
Might be wrong but I think there's one about Spider-Man right ?
I realized this the very first one I picked up, and I'm raging that Jack still hasn't figured this out yet.
I loved hearing the dialogue between Mimir and Kratos in this episode, it really showed us how troubled Mimir is because of his past deeds, and how wise Kratos has become. Also, it's so great to see Sean having a lot of fun with this game! Can't wait for more episodes!
If you read the excerpt about mimir in the book, it entails that Kratos has grown to respect him a lot and Kratos consults him for advise frequently, and rn it seems Kratos is seeing mimir is lost and regretful and is giving him words as mimir would for him
It is enjoyable to see that.

That's actually a good one, I'll definitely keep that in mind.

The reason they provide for your weapons loosing powers in this game, is that "Fimbulwinter wears down all things, even stone" as said by kratos. Also when you got your first runic attack in this game, Mimir says "Shame wimbulwinter ruined all of our previously gathered runes" or something like that...

Mimir also said it. Twice.
"Y'know, it's rather convenient that Fimbulwinter is ruinin' all the HELPFUL magic we've acquired thus far..."
Actually it was Kratos that said fimblewinter was wearing down stone. I think
Kratos’s references to past games like the boat captain he killed in each of the three Greek games is such a neat touch.

I imagine him stomping through the water smacking it with his weapons wondering why the fish are not near him
I just love that Sean just collect’s everything and does side missions
Jack overseeing odin raven when he arrived at the drawfs and never seeing it, crawls through a small passage sees a bird on the roof and kills it without thinking pretty much cracked me xD
It’s kinda neat how it’s not only affecting magic and Weapons, it appears even structures are weakening
7:02 atreus mimicking kratos is the cutest and funniest thing ever in GOW
Made even better when you realize, because of what he *said* that it was Kratos who stayed to guard the house while she went fishing. FOR FIVE DAYS. The only part that was disputed tells you a LOT about the Dad of War :D
@@dorn284 "I left behind many things in Sparta, boy. Including gendered domestic chores. Someday, I will train you in the ways of the house husband."
Norse mythology(/language) breakdown:
0:38 Yes, Nidhogg ("He Who Delivers Hateful Blows") is a dragon who devours corpses and chews on the roots of Yggdrasil (the world tree).
26:14 3:24 Nidavellir is just another name for Svartalfheim (the world of dwarves - the game just considers Nidavellir to be a city in Svartalfheim, though).
1:34:17 "Rönd" is Icelandic for "stripe, streak" or "edge, rim"
1:38:51 Fjörgyn/Jörd ("earth" in Old Norse) was a giantess, a personification of earth, mother of Thor, and mistress of Odin.
Thanks For this, it was interesting to read up on more mythology

Atreus: Okay-
Kratos: ENOUGH
this part had me dying on the floor, the timing of this LMAO 😭😭😭
The little "wha-" from Atreus as well, sounded so sadly confused
“The armies assembled
Nine warriors strong
Well-rested and fed
For the war would be long
The orb in the air
And branches in hand
A swing, a collision
The spectators stand
For nine nights and nine days
They fight without rest
Running, then waiting
To prove themselves best
Until finally, mercifully,
The army does rout
One army triumphant
The other, struck out” Love this so much
Is baseball
Yes, finally
No Sonic Frontiers?!
lmao ft
Fr
What you mean finally he posted his first vid yesterday??
Fr been waiting all day
