Ok, the close shave variant has always been my favourite in the series. But I was never quite sure why. Well now I am. If you listen very carefully to it, you’ll notice extra backing notes. The old iron variant doesn’t have these. Yes James needs to be stopped, but unlike old iron, I think those extra backing notes were Mike and Junior’s subtle little way of saying; “This is incredibly serious. People are in immediate danger of dying because of this runaway. Take this scene seriously please.” And it worked, because 5/6 year old me took that scene very seriously when I first watched A Close Shave. Duck was even more of a hero in that episode than I thought. It was unbelievable justice for him after being framed by Diesel. Give him the respect he deserves people.
I didn’t see Close Shave until a good time after I first heard the theme. But when I did see it for the first time seeing James’s on the same line with coaches put a rock in my gut
Yeah, the trucks are giggling, but people are in danger of death. The story is disguised as slightly comedic while being very serious. I love those extra backing instruments in the Close Shave variant. It adds a great level of seriousness that no previous version of the theme had.
You're right on the money! This runaway involved the risk of an actual passenger train collision - something you'll notice Awdry rarely involved in his stories. It's a new level of danger (as you already mentioned,) which indeed seems to have inspired the "Close Shave" theme to have a more serious tone. I mean, on top of the imminent threat to James' passengers, there were also people on the platform who could have been hurt by debris, and the trucks in the story come across as slightly more malicious than usual - adding a more immediate, personal threat to Duck on their part. They wanted to genuinely hurt him, which kicks off the seriousness of the runaway scenario right from the start. It's also likely why the "Close Shave" runaway theme starts differently from other versions as well.

That’s my favorite version of the runaway theme too and my other favorite Thomas tracks, (no pun intended), are the water mill theme and the viaduct theme.
I think one of the many things that separates classic Thomas from the crowd is that it was never afraid to get serious about things. Not scarring for life disturbing but pretty damn serious. In 'A Close Shave' not only is Duck getting chased down but he is not completely successful in preventing an accident either, whereas in other shows everything always works out perfectly fine in the end because deus ex machina (which is super cliche). It adds greater weight to the situation too when people are shown to have been that close to death. Duck didn't stop the runaway train but he at least was successful in preventing innocent people from getting injured or killed, and he got himself into wreck because of it. Duck putting himself in the middle of danger, knowing he was risking harm to himself, shows his character and where his morals lie. In any other kid's show the main character doesn't really risk much. Nothing that bad happens and they never really sacrifice anything of themselves.
I think that comes, in part, from how faithful the original runs of the show were to the much older books they were based on. It's practically just a reading of the book with some music thrown in. Rev. W. Awdry wrote those stories based on actual stories from train operators, with an emphasis on doing the right thing and a fantasy twist. A close shave is likely a parallel to an actual run away train incident, which contributes to why the story treats it so seriously. And the show chose to not change a thing about it, which is so awesome to me.
I particularly like the inclusion of a scare chord at the 2:02 mark when it briefly cuts inside the barber shop for a split second just before Duck crashes into it. The Unlucky Tug pointed out in his breakdown of _The Flying Kipper_ that something people overlook in that crash is that humans are prominently shown right before it happens. While the original version of _A Close Shave_ did have that mention of the barber shaving a customer, the adaptation benefits from being a TV episode by being able to briefly cut away from Duck’s perspective to show what was at stake.
A Close Shave is up there with Busy Going Backwards as being the most perfect runaway episode and this music is the icing on the cake. That one-off fade in Old Iron's mix perfect's the "we're back under control" feeling.
As a child, Busy Going Backwards was by far my favourite episode tied to A Close Shave, on rewatch, they’re the two episodes that felt most like “if people don’t act fast, there may be serious injuries or death”
And in both situation, they hint the seriousness, in ‘a close shave’ they have the trucks say “Chase him, Bump him, Throw him off the rails!” The trucks were out to cause harm that day and they showed it. In Busy going Backwards, not only was there no train to try prevent it but that also mention “He couldn’t ask the guard, he had jumped clear.” Toad had no way of stopping anything deaths or injuries from happening. Everything was down to those their at the time and the short reactions times between seeing them coming at the high speeds and the collision, the only ones warned was the workers at the end but not after three close calls with Bertie, Gordon and James.
“Beg pardon Sir” gasped Duck “ excuse my intrusion” “NO I WONT “ fumed the barber “You frightened my customers, I’ll teach you!” So he lathered Ducks face all over, Poor Duck!
"We'll catch him! We'll catch him!" puffed Edward. James was laughing. "What a lark! What a lark!" he chuckled to himself. Suddenly he was going faster and faster. He realised that he had no driver. "What shall I do? I can't stop. Help! Help!". "We're coming! We're coming!" called Edward. Edward was panting up behind with every ounce of steam he had. At last he caught up with James. "Steady, Edward!" called his driver. The inspector stood on Edward's front, holding a noose of rope in the crook of the shunter's pole. He was trying to slip it over James's buffer. The engines swayed and lurched. At last! "Got him!", he shouted. He pulled the noose tight, and gently braking, Edward's driver checked the engines' speed, and James's fireman scrambled across and took control. "So the old iron caught you after all." chuckled Edward. "I'm sorry." whispered James. "Thank you for saving me. You were splendid, Edward." "That's all right.", replied Edward."
They raced through Edward's station, but the cars were catching up. "As Fast as we can, then they'll catch us gradually." The Driver was gaining control. "Another clear mile and we'll do it. This is my favorite version of the runaway theme. I’m not sure why, but it’s super epic especially since it’s associated with one of the more iconic trainwrecks in the classic Thomas era. Also, because the song actually has a nice and epic finish. The one in Old Iron sort of faded out, with no *OOMPH* of a big finish. I’m a bit sad that this was only used specifically for A Close Shave for Duck since it’s so good. But in a way, I’m glad it was only used once because if it was overused in the series, it would turn into a clique. The magic of the tension and build up from this episode wouldn’t be the same if it was constantly repeated later on.

One thing I've noticed with the runaway theme on "A Close Shave for Duck" is in the music, particularly depending on who's narrating the story. In George Carlin's case, the ending bridge is repeated twice instead of the main part of the theme. I think they wanted to draw the suspense for the part when Duck veers into a siding at the last second, saving James' passengers and the people on the platform.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the runaway theme but I’ve been avoiding it because when I’m reminded of it or hear it, then it gets stuck in my head because of the catchiness. 😂
"All of a sudden...Timothy passed the station and didn't stop. The workers tried to hit the breaks but Timothy wouldn't stop! The workers yelled at Timothy to stop. Timothy didn't listen...neither did he care. And then he headed to a cliff. The workers yelled again, Timothy replied with...'PREPARE TO BE SENT TO THE GRAVEYARD!' and plunged off the cliff. Causing a big explosion and never to be recognized, the saddest thing is the passengers were in there."

Driver: another clear mile and we’ll do it. Oh, Glory look at that.
James was just pulling out on their line from the station ahead. Any minute there could be a crash
Driver: it’s up to you now Duck
Duck put every ounce and steam against the cars
Duck: It’s too late!
He veered into a siding where a barber had set up shop. He was shaving a customer.
The Runway theme is my favourite theme throughout the entire TV show from the model series to the CGI series
I always wanted to play this while driving on the highway. Good chase music like this should always be played when there is speed.
Hearing these makes me feel like I've been through a time portal and I remember watching this show as a kid.
Thanks, this is very cool.
The trucks' chance had come. "Hurrah, hurrah!" they laughed. And, banging their buffers, they pushed him down the hill!
Mattel doesn't care about Duck for all they care green tank engine inside barber shop might as well be named Randall. 😠
On on on! Yelled the trucks pushing bob off the rails!
The Inspector Stood On Edwards Footplate With A Coil Of Wire Rope In The Crook Of The Shunters Pole. He Was Trying To Slip It Over James’s Buffer. The Engines Swayed And Lurched. At Last, “GOT HIM!” He Shouted, And Pulled The Noose Tight.
“Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!” laughed the trucks!
'' We've broken away! We've broken away! Chase him! Bump him! Through him off the rails! '' they yelled.
@@urthvox “Hurry, Duck! Hurry!” said the driver.
Dammit I thought I beat would you to it on this one, but nice job Ty, especially the A Close Shave one
The A Close Shave version is my favorite!
This is the type of music you’d hear in a chase sequence in action movies
Me when I go to the bathroom be like:
“It’s up to you now duck. Duck put every ounce of steam against the trucks”
Could you do Rainbow Connection in the style of Duck’s Sad Theme
When the song slaps so hard you bleed
*James:* "What shall I do?! I can't stop! HELP! HELP!"
1:13
*"HURRAH HURRAH HURRAH!"* Laughed the Trucks.
*"WE'VE BROKEN AWAY, WE'VE BROKEN AWAY!"*
*"CHASE HIM, BUMP HIM, THROW HIM OFF THE RAILS!"* They yelled.
This music physically grew arms and is currently back handing me!
(Because it slaps)
The best runaway themes, without a doubt.
Holy! This is on point, almost as if a perfect rip from the episode
suddenly there was trouble "HA RAH HA RAH WE BROKEN AWAY! CHASE HIM! BUMP HIM! PUSH HIM OF THE RAILS!" chanted the troublesome trucks!
Edward was panting up behind with every ounce of steam he had, at last he caught up with James. “Steady Edward”, called his driver. The inspector stood on Edwards front holding the noose of rope in the crook of the shunters pole.
With percy runs away. Can u include the part with Google stoping?
"Hurrah Hurrah! We've broken away, we've broken away! Chase him! Bump him! Throw him off the rails!"
When you put the Bible in the fiction section of the library at catholic school:
Don’t get me wrong, I like the runaway theme but I’ve been avoiding it because when I’m reminded of it or hear it, then it gets stuck in my head because of the catchiness. 😂
damn
I;m afraid i have the same feeling now
@@cardiv5zuikaku944 hahaha, it’s like an earworm.
Yes, this is a reference to ghost train: the untold story of timothy.
Runaway theme extended next?
2:02 It’s like the music is saying “Look out!!!”
The trucks were away, " HURRAH HURRAH HURRAH! " They yelled, " WEVE BROKEN AWAY, WEVE BROKEN AWAY, WEVE BROKEN AWAY! CHASE HIM! BUMP HIM! THROW HIM OFF THE RAILS! "
