I love the distorted bass, I'm sucker for some bass and the way Dusty played it was amazing and his work in ten foot pole hooked me to them when is was a kid in the 90s
they were so clean and crisp. every note. i saw them in Southdakota during this tour. that was the first of six times seeing them live. they were definitely my favorite. always will be. they are the best.
I'm probably older than most here, anyway.. I got to see these guys all the place . way back... If you were looking around.. You could see people, running sound EQUIPMENT.. Tripping off old EchoPLEX BOXES.. (look it up.).. Pre-recorded Stuff.. Either way the digital day's came along.. And in bigger places, echoing throughout the building, or stadium.. has been a problem.. Like a ball game.. Some places you get, or sit.. It's kinda hard to make out what the HELL was just SAID.. THESE folks are the best in the music business.. Hands down.. And still putting out great music, Dusty is missed, that bass in ALOT of cases was triggering off the midi.. ..... = music instrument, digital interface.. = not so many people needed to do that work... The guitar tech/ now bass player could tell some stories, I'm SURE.. God bless you all, in the name of Jesus...
Nick Michaels, amen to that, brother. best damn smoke i’ve ever tasted. -i have to confess that they aren’t always easy to find though anymore too. i’ve found a local gas station/carry out that has tareytons though and they treat me well and taste super good too.
ZZ Top is and has been always on of my fav's...hard to top 3 guys with their sounds and ability, and there are plenty of other great bands that we all enjoy and may consider our fav...but ZZ Top...what can we say...commercial or not, good stuff
Several comments on this post demonstrate the unfortunate negative "effect" RECENT technology has on listener & viewer impressions of live music. Billy's been a generous influence on my work since the late 70's, especially in regards to tone, production, keeping it simple and in the groove. Yes, at some live shows he'll occasionally use limited backing guitar and special effect tracks - however, never any "auto-tune," lip syncing or relying on vocal dubs - especially at this show. Any delay seen in close ups of his singing is only from the video mix - this is a pure live 3 piece golden chunk of Rock history. Billy always has - and continues to REALLY SING IT. Don't confuse these guys with techno reliant performers of today - they won't need any crutches until their hips are being replaced from all the dance grooves.
Sounds like there's vocal dubs in it too me. And i dunno why they just didn't put another guitarist out there instead of using a backing track. Kinda lame, but that's my opinion. Still sounds good though
A-FUKIN-MEN BROTHER!!! THIS IS ONE OF MOST BRILLIANT TALLENTS TO EVER STRAP IT ON ... SO SAYS "JIMI HENDRIX" AND A BAZILLION OTHER PEOPLE .... SAVE YOUR NEGATIVE COMMENTS FOR THE CURRENT STATE OF ROCK MUSIC !!! ALLHAIL THE REV. BILLY G🤠
I notice he has a dual tonality to his voice, how is that being done? You can clearly tell when dusty sings however he when he’s not there are two voices coming out of Billy?
@@gtate135 I'm quite sure your hearing his brilliant mix with the analog effects available at the time. It's a combination of Chorus, Phase, Delay, Reverb and Compression, he's dialed them into a blend that does sound a bit like todays "Doubling" effect. By the 90's people in the know, knew Billy was a tone genius. When the earliest commercially released digital effects processor by Sony, "SP90" I believe it was called, they turned to Billy for help. During its development they sent them to him, he worked wonders with it and to make it understandable asked him (hired I'm sure) to write the entire last chapter of the owner's manual - soon everyone wanted one. I sold 2 guitars to get the $1,600 needed to buy one. It was extremely powerful especially for the time, however also extremely difficult to use and especially create your own effects, the 'lil 'ol boy from Texas further proved his brilliance with instruction on how to get the most out of one. It quickly became an industry standard, and was so for several years when digital wonders were coming out like wildfire and in every studio worth its salt.
Paul Villela I cant imagine anything being a hard act to follow for Alvin Lee...he was a far better guitar player than these guys in ZZ could ever be. IMO.
Might get some flack for this (I love ZZ top), but I actually like how the sound is rough, you can hear bum notes, but it sounds natural and I like it. It is what it is, a live show and there's no over dubs or secret musicians hidden in the wings, just Billy, Dusty and Frank giving it big guns and going for it.
I saw them in 1982, in St.Paul. The sound in the room was horrid..I didn't recognize 1 single song, until the last one ..just a tremendous howling,it was loud...it's a shame I love these guys...never went to that arena again
The energy and movement of the guys here is brilliant! of course they are alot older but would be good to see them move a bit nowadays. Billy's close up at 1:15, there's just something about it haha, seeing his eyes maybe..? ;) Desperate to see ZZ Top before they call it quits!
I am from North Harris Co.Texas.Which,Houston is the county seat. Billy was born there,Dusty is originally from Dallas,Frank was born in Frankston,Texas on the Anderson/Henderson county line. My moms people setting in Henderson County in1846. Now the first time I saw these dudes was Dec.27th,1981 @ the Wintergarden in Dallas. And no l didn't go from Houston to Dallas to see The Fabulous ZZTop. I lived in Steve Miller's hometown. Without googling, can anyone honestly tell me what town he is from? El Loco was a killer show,no opening act either.
Cary West Without googling I'm gonna say Steve Miller is from Dallas. My first ZZTop show was El Loco tour Nov. 1st, 1981 at the Cotton Bowl with the Rolling Stones. Man it was a perfect day for a show at the Cotton Bowl, Texas in the Fall when it starts to cool off a little bit, you know what I'm talkin bout. Paid $17.50 for the ticket. I still got the stub. I'm a Fort Worth boy, but I was born up north in Amarillo.
Rush, Hendrix, Grand Funk, ZZ, and Triumph. All amazing 3 man bands. Am I missing any, cause I would love to know. BTW Zep is my favorite, but 3 man rock bands are so awesome.
Never mind, I googled it and seen I missed plenty. Although the 5 I have listed above to me would be the top 5. I seen Stevie Ray 2 months before he died, and I am sure he had at least 5 band members on the stage, including a keyboardist?
For myself and many, many other guitar player's "Deguello" will forever be known as the "Album Of Tone!" If you can't groove to these Dudes, you just can't groove. Only thing is I like it better when they lost the Cowboy Hats...
They ARE from Texas - my homies ! - and bet they'd wear their hats whether a punk likes it or not...... they look superfly with and without their cowboy hats !
Biker anthem in its day. Maybe still today. Bad and Nationwide. Ten Foot Pole is quite a lyrical story when the boys ..... eh don't have to go into all that. But I think some of us have said, man that shit looks too scary for my head... and thanks to above we did! Texas gospel by the reverend Billy G!!! Mickey J the Gulf Vet
Billy G still says 10 ft pole was written from an experience in Nepal ....said he was looking for the Yeti, and he saw something up there.....that's the story anyway.
They had an incredible live sound back then. Super crunchy guitar and distorted bass. HUGE. Much better before the Eliminator years.
I love the distorted bass, I'm sucker for some bass and the way Dusty played it was amazing and his work in ten foot pole hooked me to them when is was a kid in the 90s
I agree. Showing off the chops for sure.
they were so clean and crisp. every note. i saw them in Southdakota during this tour. that was the first of six times seeing them live. they were definitely my favorite. always will be. they are the best.
I can say this about the Eliminator years, at least Billy stopped using that stupid vocal harmonizer.
I'm probably older than most here, anyway.. I got to see these guys all the place

R.I.P. DUSTY, IT'S SAD AND IT'S NATIONWIDE !
Them criss cross riffs in the middle are BADASS !!
You were bad, you were nationwide. RIP Dusty
Frank does not get a lot love back there but I tell ya he keeps the groove grooving keep on chopping Frank.
CAUSE YOUR BAD AND YOUR NATION WIDE❤️❤️❤️✌️🙏🙏🙏 HAVE MERCY 🤟
This song is as good now as it was in 1982! Hard to find lucky strikes now but blues bands and fine foxy mamas and Cadillac's are still around.
I can get you a Carton right now for $80.00 American man. No lie.
g ray welz I still smoke unfiltered Lucky Strikes.
Nick Michaels, amen to that, brother. best damn smoke i’ve ever tasted.
-i have to confess that they aren’t always easy to find though anymore too. i’ve found a local gas station/carry out that has tareytons though and they treat me well and taste super good too.
Who cares if they're using harmonizers (effects)? These guys were innovators.
And great musicians! Luv this video. Thanks for posting!
Now THAT was ZZ Top, in it's FINEST. Today it's Commercial JUNK! Listen to those harmonies!
When TEXAS was Touring! 🎶
3 Texas Fellows that said "lets just be rock legends". And they did.
They have been around together for a lot time. Not very many bands stay together. They break up.
Awesome music. God bless.
Same three members since 1969, they’re the one and only. Until someone corrects me in the comment section.
ZZ Top is and has been always on of my fav's...hard to top 3 guys with their sounds and ability, and there are plenty of other great bands that we all enjoy and may consider our fav...but ZZ Top...what can we say...commercial or not, good stuff
Yes Lawd
Rush?
Hard to beat ZZTOP. THIS MUSIC NEEDS TO STAY AROUND. FOR AWHILE. FOREVER

All I can say is there has never been a band more talented, cool and down right bad ass as ZZ Top folks!
Finally, a video where you can hear Frank singing!
Man that bass break is bad ass
ZZ TOP play them souped up blues brother! R.I.P Dust Man,miss ya my friend.
Backing vocals, both, are amazing!
This is great live recording, great sound with strong vocals. This ZZ Top has on top the their game.
Saw them in San Antonio, opening for Ten Years After in about 1970. Hard act for Alvin Lee to follow.
Paul Villela I cant imagine anything being a hard act to follow for Alvin Lee...he was a far better guitar player than these guys in ZZ could ever be. IMO.
Grand Funk Railroad blew Ten Years After off the stage as well in 1970
I really miss seeing Pearly Gates out and about. I completely understand why, but she’s really the 4th member of this incredible band.
This song is so cool,, and Dusty lays down the bass jam outro
I’m from Houston,Tx.
Fantastic Band 🎸my favorite Rock and Blues

That's some Texas thunder there... badass
Philip Brotzman yes it is!
Some come back. Please.
Here comes Melba.
They're good lads.
:-)
I love the effect on the vocal. I really loved it when they began to embrace synthesisers and machines in the early 80's.
Pretty wild effect huh? It's gotta be like the vocal effects I KNOW some black metal, death metalhardcore bands use. I call them Godzilla vocals.
@@a.d.ibarra9613 - Yeah, masteriously wondrous!
Dusty is a beast! Rest in peace ya big ol texas legend!
Saw this one or the concert before they opened for Rolling Stones in Houston at the Summit BEST EVER
They opened for the Stones at the Astrodome in '81, along with the Fabulous Thunderbirds...I was there!
Seen them 2 years before this video, Rick Derringer was the warm up band. This is an awesome video and sound quality for 82.
Always rated Billy Gibbons as a player. Eliminator has to be my favourite album, has so many memories of growing up learning those riffs!
Hard to believe Dustys gone. Sad R I P Brother.

Damn straight! Their live has always been great.
No flack here brother....
Small imperfections in live music is the music breathing. ...
Makes it REAL
I've been going to concerts for 40 years and ZZ Top is one of the two tightest bands I've ever seen. The other is Black Sabbath.
That vox processor / harmonizer on nationwide sounds hideous
@@joejohnston2035 Sounds bad only to purists
Reverend Willie G. Greatest vocalist ever

Wow.... Never heard them stretch out Ten Foot Pole like that before...
Does anyone know what the hell Rev Willie G says on ten foot pole, it's my fav song cause of the remarkable bass on it.
It's all gibberish except for the chorus...
The last 80 seconds of "Ten Foot Pole" sounds like a nuclear reactor about to melt down!
The energy and movement of the guys here is brilliant! of course they are alot older but would be good to see them move a bit nowadays. Billy's close up at 1:15, there's just something about it haha, seeing his eyes maybe..? ;)
Desperate to see ZZ Top before they call it quits!

Dusty really works that bass! Is that Frank singing or Billy being enhanced via electronics?
A lifetime ago
hes got that voice changer thing on that he uses for manic mechanic
Veryyyyyy coool
Billy was a little heavier there than he is now
Not with pearly gates. The 59 LP's name is "pearly gates." The pearly gates pick ups were based on the sound of this guitar.
