Met a drummer who met Billy Gibbons while standing in line at a Buc ee's in Texas. It was about 11 am, the Reverend was wearing pajama pants and asked the guy what he thought the best beef jerky was. Said they talked for almost an hour, Billy could be someone's neighbor and they'd never know. ZZ Top was playing that night in, yes, La Grange and Billy said something like "Come on down", and the guy said he'd have to ask his wife (turns out she wasn't havin' none of that!!!). The guy showed me the selfie with him and Billy. I don't know how people don't love Texas.
Ask your wife? That sums up what the hell is wrong with this country. Have some balls sir, she'll love still you or never did. Respect her but damn man
I watched this concert on German television at the age of 22. It was 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning. I drank a good beer and smoked a fine cigar. After that, I fell asleep and burned a big hole in my parents' armchair. I woke up when the smoldering fire reached my thigh. A good memory for me - not for my parents :-))
I owe my initial exposure to "that little ol' band from Texas" to my brother, Stan. He brought home two classics: Tres Hombres and Fandango! I was 11 at the time and it blew my young mind! Years later, I got the opportunity to repay my brother by taking him to see ZZ Top in concert (Afterburner tour) in 1986. Turns out it was the only concert we'd ever see together as we lost Stan in 1999. ZZ Top will always be near and dear to my heart! Thanks for always keepin' one foot in the blues!
One of the best live concerts ever broadcast on television. They played from 4 o'clock in the morning. Everyone was totally thrilled. That was the start of their success in Europe.
-----ZZ Top were very young back then---I don"t think they were thinking so much about money----What do you mean with "Pearly Gates",appreciated,Fernando Garajalde ?----
5:42 "RIGHT ON!" 🎸🤘😄Dusty was so fkn awesome, the way he simply dropped the bass at you, so it hit ya in the face, and made you feel the boogie. R.I.P, brother.
Some might say that honor goes to the Police or Rush. I love those bands, but after seeing this, I certainly won’t argue with you. Early ZZ Top reaches out and touches my soul. Simply amazing.
ZZ Top is so good it's beyond belief. I gigged drums 4 years. Only Frank Beard challenged me. Dusty Hill was a vocal classic. And then there is Bill Gibbons. Eddie Van Halen said Gibbons was the reason he picked up a guitar....nuff said.
Saw them in 1983 on the Eliminator Tour with my dad. I was young and naive to think it was their first album lol. My dad quickly set me straight. I love that old ZZ Top music!!
I was 13 when Eliminator came out which is to say I experienced puberty through the Legs video. Since then and now just appreciate them for being a really great blues rock band.
I would have been 6 then. I do remember the Legs video. I was obsessed with drums even at that age and watched MTV all day everyday. Learned to play drums by watching MTV in fact.
This is the version of ZZ Top I first saw live. This recording is only an approximation to the wall of sound they could throw out. They had stages of perfection and this is one of them.
This Dutchy was 14 and saw them on German TV started every weekend at 23h..love at first hearing..never stopped...ZZ Top you didn´t have to shake it but you did, you did and I thank you! Salute you!
I JUST saw ZZ Top in concert on Saturday. FIRST day WITHOUT Dusty. Billy said they sent him home the day B4 to get some rest. Their guitar tech Elwood Francis( of 20 years ) filled in with Billy's blessing saying 'The show must go I'm ❤😪
If you only know them for Legs then you finally recognize this little piece of bluesy rock magic for what it is...there had to be some grand muse or great collaborative force or vibration in the zeitgeist that allowed for this type of music during that time because it surely came to an end at some point. Waiting for someone more literate than me to quantify it more succinctly.
59 comments when I got here for that 59 pearly gates Les Paul. I was born in 59 and I got mesmerized by guitar and great rock and roll and started playing at age 13 or so and have been jamming ever since. Billy and ZZ are one of the reasons. Born in the year of 1959, the year of that great guitar, something great was in my destiny. God bless America!
I saw them in the 70's playing mostly Tres Hombres and Fandango... Phenomenal! Soon after the songs left the great Frank Beard with little to do. They slowly lost energy and couldn't get back to their 70's early 80's peak!
ZZ like all the bands of the time, wrote songs they could play just as well live as it was on the album.....didn't need 6 backup singers, 5 other musicians, and pre recorded effects to sound great.
3 guys who were so in sync, what a groove

The most pressing & disturbing question to come from your comment is YOU'RE TELLIN ME YOU DIDNT TELL HER, "SEE YOU AFTER THE SHOW DEAR!"???
Ask your wife? That sums up what the hell is wrong with this country. Have some balls sir, she'll love still you or never did. Respect her but damn man

Are you sure it was a cigar?
@@Jargo1901 Yes! It was a "Cuesta Rey". A birthday present from my brother. About $ 6!
Glad you woke up dude..my God be careful....rock on..
I hate when that happens!!!
I did kinda the same thing when I was 16,,,got woke up by the Fire dept banging on my door ...Too Funny,,,
Jesus just left Chicago and took Dusty Hill with him today 😔
So incredibly sad. One of my childhood heroes.
There will never be another like Dusty Hill. The death of cool.
We will always have his voice and that booming bottom end bass. RIP sir
RIP BIG BUBBA
You were the true backbone of these Tres Hombrez
Yeah, but he up there with Jimi and Elvis playin’ a mean ole’ low-down boogie right now tho!
I love Billy, but Dusty and Frank = equals a tight AF rhythym section. They keep the groove nailed to the floor. Thank you Dusty❤
This is one awesome band
Essen Germany . 1980 on my Tv , first time i heard/saw ZZ Top. Love them 44 years later .
Saw them once in Köln, same time, love them still,

I was on the U.S.S. El Paso LKA 117 and as such am an honorary citizen of TEXAS
As a born and raised Texan and a veteran, I concur you are an honorary Texan! Thank you for your service
Little Band from Texas!
❤Tres Hombres.❤
❤
Pre-MTV ZZ Top is just a fantastic legacy, this was their peak and I’m so glad we have these classic albums and vids to remind us what they were.
It took the German a little while realize their socks were blown out.
The Beat Trio ever, straight up Bad Ass.
RIP Dusty.. Thanks for the music..
One of the best live concerts ever broadcast on television. They played from 4 o'clock in the morning. Everyone was totally thrilled. That was the start of their success in Europe.
Dusty’s bass tone is dirty as hell and glorious.
dusty the best look at him grab that neck
Hendrix was super humble. He said Billy was better than him but also said similar about Terry Kath... The truly Great ones never blow their own horn
Humble and correct
They're at the peak of their powers here.
i think this stage of zz top has them at their very best.
The essence of the best ZZ Top is this medley. Yep. A three piece done right.
I love the “synchronized stage dances” but when “Pearly Gates” is unleashed you know they mean business! 🤠
me too, the actual sound of Billy Gibbons guitar and Dusty Hills bass together is absolutely beautiful..
-----ZZ Top were very young back then---I don"t think they were thinking so much about money----What do you mean with "Pearly Gates",appreciated,Fernando Garajalde ?----
Is there anything as cool as ZZ Top............RIP Dusty you legend 🤘
This is immaculate. I heard that Jimi saw Billy play as a teenager... maybe 21... and thought he would be one of the greatest guitar players ever.
Jimi Hendrix cited Billy Gibbons as his favorite guitarist.
Billy and his band opened a couple of shows for Hendrix
According to billy they had a 40 minute set and the only way they could play the whole thing was to play 2 of jimis songs. He said that Jimi loved it
And he did yes he did and i thank you 😍🤩
He was right
And just like that music will never be the same…..RIP Dusty 😔💙
5:42 "RIGHT ON!" 🎸🤘😄Dusty was so fkn awesome, the way he simply dropped the bass at you, so it hit ya in the face, and made you feel the boogie. R.I.P, brother.
One more time for my Jesus. See you when we get there Dusty. Godspeed.
This IS the essence of COOL.....
The shades weren't there yet, but the hats, suits, swagger, and vibe was!
The shades thing was/is silly. Should never have done that.
The best 3 piece band ever I think.
Some might say that honor goes to the Police or Rush. I love those bands, but after seeing this, I certainly won’t argue with you. Early ZZ Top reaches out and touches my soul. Simply amazing.
@@ernest3601 cant forget Triumph or King's X

I saw this tour in 1980, Alpine Valley with the Outlaws. Was already a fan of ZZ but this cemented it!
These guys always have been, and always will be, some of the absolute coolest dudes on the planet
God bless dusty Hill bad man laying it down😎
Saw them in 1983 on the Eliminator Tour with my dad. I was young and naive to think it was their first album lol. My dad quickly set me straight. I love that old ZZ Top music!!

1980 ! Their Prime ! Epic !

Saw them on this tour ... unbelievable show for 3 dudes from Tejas...
This Dutchy was 14 and saw them on German TV started every weekend at 23h..love at first hearing..never stopped...ZZ Top you didn´t have to shake it but you did, you did and I thank you! Salute you!
Of all the power trios ZZ is Tops!!!
So, my hometown just announced ZZ Top is coming to our performing arts center on March 28th. Yeah, it's what everyone is talking about tonight!
Secured a ticket this afternoon! I will be seeing ZZ Top on 3/28/25!
When these guys are all gone, we will have all the good tunes forever.
I love how they choreograph their stage presence.
Little things I wish other modern bands would take note on.
I’ve seen them 6 times, never were anything less than awesome.
I usually don't like it when bands do it, but these guys made it COOL. 🫡
Pure Class.
Damn it. Remeber seeing ZZ first time on germa tv. Epic. No synths. No electronics. Just pure Texas Rock :O):O):O)
Me too. And I waited for them to take this fake beards off.
This is oh-so much better than any of deserve.
If you don't already you need to get the DVD of this show! It is outstanding! "Precious And Grace" is a favorite.
Billy what a guitarist- perfect note selection and vibe - he’s one with Pearly Gates
man ZZ Top has some great heavy blues guitar hooks
No band has ever just oozed pure coolness like these guys. Proud to be a Texan!!!
Neprocjenjivo..gledam i slušam ponovo i ponovo..iz godine u godinu..tako već 30+..💯🎸👍💙
These guys just flat out kick ass! Great band, great tunes, and they got some great moves.
42 years old and still awesome to hear.
I'm 63 and it's Still Awesome to me :- )
Great Post. Thank you. ZZ Top is in the Top 3 POWER TRIOS of all time along with The Cream and Hendrix Experience. Nov 2020 fan
and Motorhead and Police
The greatest three man band ever for real
Better than Cream? Better than The Police?
Yep. And WAY more fun
Their music is timeless and CLASSIC, but their stage presence and showmanship even TOPS their music! What performers!
That move to the mic for her mercy lyrics is too cool!
4:09 if want to watch it again (and again)
*have mercy
RIP Dusty Hill. I'm glad I got to see them in 2019.
Sublime!
Pearly gates’ sounding amazing
R.I.P. DUSTY. I cry Tres Rios of tears for you, Brother! Rock on!
Hell yeah...
Man three piece has a groove. It’s these guys and Motörhead for mine.
That little ole band from Texas!!!! The best of the west!!!!

So damn good. The coolest. Still the coolest.
....for me it is the best medley in rock history......
That 1959 Les paul Billy is playing he named it Pearly gates
3 piece greatness.
Shit hits me right down to my soul
Dusty IS such a CRAZY good part of the best blues rock band ever !!! Recognize THE TOP YO !!! ❤❤❤
My favorite live ZZ TOP CONCERT....WOW..LOVE IT.....
What a gig! Not the fastest or the smoothest but by far the grooviest. That's what they are about
Simulcast to all of Europe, this show is legendary.
Smooth playing 😊
The original Pearly Gates and all, very cool
deguello is my favourite groove from these cats.
Now your cooking with bacon!!!
The best video of the best lil band from Texas!!!
I love you. I love you guys
I am sure they heard the Reverend Billy Gibbons and the boys over in East Germany that night.
Texas World Wide!!
The bass tone here is ridiculous. This is how bass should be mixed.
Perfection as always 😅😅😅
Love the brass intro. These guys are a force of nature

was I only person to notice the drummer who has no beard is named Frank Beard?
I like how they teased the crowd with “Jesus JLC” right before the first jam!
rev billy gibons rocks to this day
Thank you
ZZ like all the bands of the time, wrote songs they could play just as well live as it was on the album.....didn't need 6 backup singers, 5 other musicians, and pre recorded effects to sound great.

Now you’re in heaven
As my African friends would say "They put some damn STANK on this performance.
