    Gotta appreciate the old generation of diesels, where they were built to last - no dpf, no plastic engine components or fancy electronics prone to failure

    • @LouiLocke
      @LouiLocke 2 роки тому +42

      While I kind of agree with you I have to say that these engines had plastic components and an ecu . The injection pump was electronically controlled and the Mercedes of the 90s suffered greatly from rotting wiring harnesses because they chose recyclable cable insulations . On the other hand modern engine management is a blessing even for tuners . We wouldn't be able to achieve nearly the power we do without modern engine management and the electronics got so much more reliable .
      I would rather say that the 90s were a heaven for great engines because the manufacturing capabilities were there to build very strong components but the computing power wasn't there to engineer them so they would just barely be strong enough to hold the required power in order to save money .

    • @DexMaster881
      @DexMaster881 2 роки тому +8

      They dont Need DPF.
      Indirect injection engines don't make NoX comparable to New engines. It's a common rail High pressure Lean running engine problem.
      NoX is a manufactured issue. Since Diesels were forced to Use less and less fuel because Oil companies defended their interests by raising Fuel prices to protect Gasoline cars that were losing all battles very fast to ever-growing power and speed of 90s Turbo diesels. And Gasoline cars Sell Oil reserves not Diesels.

      @@DexMaster881Are you serious? You've just shown to have absolutely no idea here.
      DPF is for Diesel Particle Filter, that is, soot, smoke! Older diesels made a lot more because the injection systems wouldn't atomize the fuel very fine, that's why we got into the 2200bar common rail, fuel spray is much finer, combustion is greatly enhanced, thus better economy and less soot.
      The Nox trap is an entirely different thing.
      Also, they ran much higher compression ratios, easily 21-25:1, so they made a lot more Nox, that's why modern diesel have much lower compression, around 16:1.
      A diesel always run very lean, unless floored.

    • @Davidaboi
      @Davidaboi 2 роки тому +11

      Just to add you can put the fully mechanical om603 pump on the 606 and it can run without an ecu

      @@dabyd64 Thank you Fellow Mechanical Engineer. I forgot my Diploma isnt approved by World Indoctrination organization.
      FYI Sooth is Overfueling or, Running Rich state on Old diesels.
      To be more precise, more fuel than air volume can handle results in a rich state that Significantly raises combustion Temps since theres not enough air to filly combust all the fuel.
      NoX is an occurance when theres a Lean state. Theres too much N from the Burn left to Bond with air and return to natural state. Produced by the lack of burning components in Modern Diesel fuel that has natural stabilizing components removed from it. Like Sulfur.
      As a result all impurities in Fuel and air get charred and you see sooth. On top of which there is more fuel with more impurities that can not be burned because theres a lack of air to satisfy optimal AFR. They always there But it's not burned unless the combustion Temp doesn't reach needed levels.
      Same particles always come in and out of the Engine in Gasoline cars and Common rails but dont get Burned unless there is something very off with AFR. Like a well worn engine,or Over tuned one.
      So When you criticize someone don't be a Feminist but Learn some fact. "I say" doesn't really work in 2022 people are more educated now. And they have more access to information other than Local propaganda.
      You Can report me to your Indoctrination party leader, I won't hold it against you.

    Great video as always man 👍 Every Mercedes engine of this era is way more capable than Mercedes made them, this is why you see so many massive milage 80-90s Mercedes car. All these where made when Mercedes truly over built their engines. Also many of the petrol and diesel engines used design features or measurements from each other, for example I plan to fit a OM 601 D23 crankshaft in a M111 2.3 to build a stroker engine with shortened rods. This is why I and many others love tuning these old engines.

  • @DexMaster881
    @DexMaster881 2 роки тому +54

    Well its incorrect Diesel burns slower. It actually burns faster.
    Diesel Burn is done 95% by the time Piston does 1/3 of its travel on the combustion cycle.
    Reason Why Diesels have lower RPM is: Heavier parts providing more inertia, and Injection system.
    Diesel fuel is compressible and at high RPM it starts lagging the ignition timing. Since Fuel injection is Ignition timing device, It reaches a point where Does not Start to squirt at TDC or slightly before TDC(which is a manufacturer compensation system for fuel compressibility). For Mercedes Om 602/603 Fuel Pump is set to start squirting 13 deg before TDC because of the Fuel line length and fuel compression compensation. And that's at around 150bar. Common rail is much bigger pressure on later DI diesels.
    Late injection results in Late ignition, that results in power decrease and Engine loses the ability to speed up. Same as Gasoline engine with late spark...
    The fact Diesel burns faster is also one of the reasons why Diesel engines have more torque. Because The Power is delivered while the Combustion space is still small. Increasing the efficiency of the explosion that pushes the Piston down. Its also the reason for Diesel Knocking sounds because you have stronger explosions that last shorter, making a distinct Start and end, resulting in sounds that are more individually distinct per explosion.
    While Gasoline engines burn for longer ,resulting in Burns that take place in larger space and as such waste energy since it no longer pushes the piston but turns to heat. That in combination with Less energy dense fuel and Lower compression to begin with badly affects torque. Also why you need more Fuel to keep the engine running.
    And also a reason Why Diesel Engines rarely throw short flames only visible when Exhaust headers are off at High RPM, while Gasoline cars can throw flames that will come out the End of the Entire exhaust system.

    My only gripe with the OM606 Turbo is that aluminium isn’t the best material for a Diesel engine head, in the naturally aspirated versions, they’re fine, but, it left a negative impact on the legacy of the turbocharged versions. My main gripe with the OM617, likewise, is that it’s not an inline 6, or DOHC. If they made a cast iron head for the OM606 Turbo, that would solve its main problem.

    uh do you mean the best aluminum diesel engine? people are constantly forgetting the materials that were used in these diesel engines.. the 616/617 were technically the best cause the block and head were made of cast iron and can withstand alot of issues.. even if the head needs some maintanence.. with 606 theres always gonna need to be some type of welding repair to the head due to overheating issues or coolant issues.

    probably because its so reliable is because it doesnt make so much torque. one of the killers of the isuzu 4JJ1 is torque is why they snap cranks from torsional and torque twist. 4jj1 made 144hp and 294nm in 2006 at less rpm than the om606 because its max revrange is 4200rpm... what most common diesels sit at and are good at because of it. "Low-end torque" the om606 is a diesel engine in my opinion made by mercedes to replicate petrol performance in a diesel engine. its missing displacement per cylinder for extra torque and revs way too high.

    very capable engine, for sure, but don't believe those 7K and 7K+ RPM stories. Sure, you can rev it that high with almost zero fuel/power, but it will detonate the engine with any serious power output at that rpm. It won't breathe at 7K+, and the fuel simply burns too slowly.

    Given I have an OM606 swapped G wagon sat on the drive pushing out a tad over 300bhp, I’m a bit biased. An absolute beast of an engine. MB at their best. 700bhp possible on stock internals is testimony to the sheer engineering brilliance of these engines. Viewers would do well to look up the Diesel Pump U.K. channel. Luke works wonders with MB diesels.
