The m112 and m113 are smooth and bulletproof engines. These engines are simple in design since their single overhead can and have no VVT. The dual spark ignition made them incredibly fuel efficient. The V6 got comparable fuel economy to Toyota’s 4cyl and the v8 got fuel efficiency comparable to v6s. More manufacturers should’ve kept the dual ignition systems.
I recently bought a 2003 MB E500 with the M113K v8 engine & (178,000 mi.). It currently has (185,000 mi) . I bought it in Los Angeles. I drove it 1850 miles to Mississippi .last week. No issues. Its rated as 17-21 MPG, but I got almost 40 MPG on my trip. It's also rated as having 302 HP. That's an under rating in my honest opinion. One should note that the M276 non-turbo manufactured before De. 2012 had some issues, corrected after that so the 2013 is the really, solid, reliable engine here. Adding the turbos in the later versions will of course always make a turbo engine more unreliable than a non-turbo engine.
