    If every photography reviewer conducted themselves like this man, accurate details, unquestioned integrity, youtube would actually be a constructive platform to use for investigating gear.

      I agree that Dustin Abbott with Atila of blue sky photography are today the 2 most fair reviewers of gear on UA-cam. Still I like the job of Northrup. I mean I was following Matt Granger, Gary Fong, Jared Polin, and Jason L. But now only the 2 aforementioned are delivering non oriented opinions and Dustin even giving metrics and scientific tests. Very nice job.

      i couldn't agree more. This was SOLID !
      if this approach was standard.. hell... YTube would be a very credible platform for consumers and online communities.
      I mean.. you do the no-hype.. no-slang.. no BS approach with excelence!

      I'm just watching it for fun. I got this camera recently and I love it so much. AF is incredible, it makes it effortless lol. This is coming from A7 mark 1. Also battery is sooooooooooooooooooo much better. I was using 4 batteries per shoot with my A7. With the A7iii I didnt even use half a battery!

    How would you compare the a7iii to the Sony a9 now that the Sony s9 is a $1000 cheaper? Which one would you pick?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому

      It would come down (for me) to how important the higher burst rate and deeper buffer are to your actual photography. Do you need those things?

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Sometimes, but not very often. I've seen reviews on how much better the auto focus is on the a9. Sometimes my a7iii focuses on a plant near by instead of the people or person. As a matter of fact, I use my center focus hold a lot because of that issue.

    Hi!, just wondering why nobody talks (or review) the Sony Phone App, with the A7 III, and everybody talks about the non front facing screen, not full flip screen, etc. so? who cares? ... Use any mobile device (with nice oled bright screen) as a monitor, a phone over the camera with a show (are available) or a big tablet for other nice checking and controls.

    I decided to go with A7 III and very happy with it. I am amazed how sharp my photos are even with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8, which I already love. I have to confess that there are times when I would love to crop a lot and A7R III could have delivered that. I will definitely upgrade to A7R IV when it is out but for the time being (considering the price difference and my inexperience) I will be happy with my A7 III.

    Sony's image sensor is 11/10 but their firmeware capability is meh... I was using Panasonic before, but Panasonic was way better user experience for the software side. But overall, my first impression to A7m3 is what I hoped for. With the 55 F1.8 lens, it focuses like a razor and creates impressive images.

    Cameras a camera and theirs two types of people, gear geeks who love these videos and photographers who watch videos on lighting, landscape, editorial photography etc with no real mention of kit.
    Fact is all cameras are equally as good as eachother and it's down to what you need to produce, unfortunatly there's plenty of people who don't realise that, (much to the delight of manufacturers:).

      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 років тому +1

      Not really (I don't have a 6D anymore to compare), but, having compared the 6D to many other cameras, I can safely say that 1) the a73 far outstrips it in dynamic range, betters it by a good margin in high ISO performance, and delivers more detailed images. It's a next-gen camera compared to the 6D, and, frankly, it's sensor is what I wish was in the 6DII (it's more in line with what I expected there).

    I Shoot with a Sony 24-105mm f4 G on A7 iii, general photograhy, primarily travel with variation of street, buildings, people, portrait, and some landscape. I also do some video coverage of the same. The equipment combination is practical, but, I’m not thrilled with rendering or sharpness.
    My question is would I achieve an improvement by upgrading the camera to A7 Riii and keep the 24-105mm?
    I would gradually add primes like Sony 24mm f1.4 GM, 55mm f1.8 &/or 85mm anyway,
    or should I keep the A7 İİİ and move to primes replacing the 24-105 zoom now?

      It's not easy, for sure, as both systems have their strengths and weaknesses. I would recommend making up a list of the kinds of lenses you want, find those lenses for each system (and look at their price), and then determine which route you want to go.

    Dustin - there are plenty of adapters that allow you to mount Canon glass on a Sony body such as the A7iii but is it possible to do the opposite and mount a Sony lens on a Canon EOS Full frame body? For some time now I have been looking for a 400mm F2.8 for my sports work. The Canon 400mm F2.8 is a wonderful lens but it is also very big and very heavy (3.85Kg). The new Sony 400mm F2.8 is nearly 1Kg lighter and it has lots of interesting features such as the new XD Linear Motor. Would this lens work on my 5D mk4 or is there some technical reason why they are incompatible?

    I don't even shoot Sony as the mirrorless size and ergonomics don't work for what I primarily do, swinging 400 to 500mm glass, at targets moving at speeds of 400 mph to near Mach 1 (Airshow/Aviation) and yet.. I find the objective and hands-on presentation OUTSTANDING. As always ... DA is on point, accurate and one comes away not having their brand bashed. (I'm a Canon shooter - and size, weight, ergonomics, menu system and color science keep me there at the moment). Thank you again. Dustin Abbott Any thoughts on the rumors about Canon releasing a FF Mirrorless that may handle native EF lenses. Unless a Mirrorless with the size, weight and ergonomics of a DSLR comes out, I’ll likely stick with what I have as that works really well (5DM4). I'm not sure how Canon is going to handle the different flange distance with a mirror, but using EF lenses natively seems like an absolute must for them to be successful with this.

    Does anyone else have this same issue?, I am running the latest version 2.1 Firmware,
    The camera Turns off IBIS after 3-4 seconds on the Tripod when there is no movement and only comes back on if there is a lot of movement, so it doesn’t stabilise camera handling (adjusting iso, Wb, audio etc etc) or small tripod vibrations, it only kicks back in when the camera is moved a fair bit, when it is working, it is rock solid for the first 3 seconds, but after that it is the same as being turned off. My canon was always on and never turned off unless I switched it off.
    It is the same on all 4 Sony cameras on all lenses. (70-200, 24105, 2875, 85, 28 etc etc)
    Anyone else experience this issue on firmware 2.1?
    Thanks

    First off, great review, Dustin. I watched all the videos, and your presentation was thorough. I'm kind of coming into photography in the later years of my life. I have relatively good disposable income, so either camera (A7iii or A7Riii) works well financially. What I think I've learned from watching not only your videos but also those of many others is that each of these cameras will seem to have their "purposes". The A7iii seems to be geared to the "all purpose" area of photography. An excellent all-rounder. Great AF, great video, great low light, etc. Seems to me to be a great choice to cover a lot of bases. The A7Riii seems to be - as its own name implies - geared to those who appreciate, and maybe need, the higher resolution. Fashion, landscape, large ultimate display (billboards, etc). It strikes me to be less of an "all-rounder" and more of a "serious still photography" product. And while your review and those of nearly everyone else rightfully point out what a great all rounder at a great price the A7iii is, my main interest is landscape. I don't expect to shoot a lot of video (would love to shoot concerts, but sneaking such a camera into a concert might be tricky!). I don't expect to be shooting people. I don't expect to be often shooting in low light indoors. And, one of the things that bothers me at least intellectually is that the A7iii only offers twice the resolution of an iPhone X. I know that resolution isn't everything in life, but it just seems that any bulky (compared to an iPhone) camera that costs in the thousands of dollars should offer a higher resolution when compared to a smartphone camera. For all those reasons, I am going with the A7Riii. I feel that for landscape, having more resolution, which means more cropping options in post, having the better EVF and the better back display will ultimately serve me better. That's the conclusion to which I have arrived after watching your excellent videos and those of many others. Thank you for your tremendous effort!

    Very good but at the same time does not cover many topics for a "long term" review, especially when compared to the competition: lens lineup; keeper rate under different use cases; robustness to tough handling and weather conditions; UI; crashes/lockups; dual card slot worth it?; start up time; flash control; still eating stars (astrophotography)?

    Thanks for the terrific review Dustin. You're a class act! A question if I may? I'm on the verge of moving from Sony crop sensors to FF. My problem is, I'm an avid birder. While the 7III would seem to be the obvious choice, 600mm would to be the maximum reach with the 7III using native glass. The A7RIII would allow me to shot in crop mode and still have 18mp on my subject at 840mm.(I'm in California, not Florida so I need the extra reach). Is the difference in AF sufficient to override the benefit of extra reach or would the 7RIII still be a good birding solution? Thanks for your time.

    Hi Dustin. Long time viewer here and always appreciate and enjoy your videos. Thanks! I do have one question. You mentioned that the a7iii tends to deliver a slightly brighter image in some scenarios when reviewing the portraits. Do you find that this tends to affect highlight recovery capability from RAW files compared to the a7riii? I noticed as well that the images from the a7iii seemed a little brighter when compared in the studio scene at high ISO, such as in the example where the ISO 32000 files were compared. To my eyes the richness of the colors and more balanced highlights of the a7riii was preferable. Anyways, I was just curious because highlight recovery is somewhat of concern to me and I wasn’t sure how the two cameras compare in that regard. I do know that you have other videos comparing high ISO performance and dynamic range so I’ll check those out too but thought I would ask here. I am primarily a landscape photographer and would enjoy the higher resolution of the a7riii but with its features the a7iii honestly really looks like a winner of a camera if you can live without the higher resolution of the files and viewfinder. Choosing between them definitely isn’t easy however with the performance they both deliver! Anyway, thanks again!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 років тому

      The a73 shows equal if not slightly better dynamic range, particularly in the lack of color cast in recovered shadow areas. They seem about equal in highlight recovery.

    Thank you, this review is great, as we all expected!
    Unfortunately I cannot share your optimism regarding the adapted lenses. To my taste, with non-native lenses the AFC becomes much slower in comparison to native glass (I can compare Tamron 45/1.8, Canon 40/2.8 with MBV versus FE 28-70/3.5-5.6). It works well in static scenes, but the longitudinal movement of object greatly decreases the success ratio. Also you basically lose quick drive speeds, camera works only at 1-2 FPS while desperately trying to maintain the focus.
    On the other hand, the AFC on more or less static objects is still very precise, Eye AF works extremely well, so one can still do great photos with adapted lenses. But without much dynamics, like a child running at you. And no video AF.
    So now I have the Planar 50/1.4 in my Christmas wishlist... Despite its huge dimensions, the camera will become smaller than with adapted Tamron 45/1.8.
    By the way, who's telling that MILC are "compact" cameras? I don't think so. :) Compared to EOS 6D: photos.app.goo.gl/VmzM512ZJnSzYSR83

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 років тому

      I agree that MILC are not really compact when you combine full frame sensors with wide aperture glass. I too have made the switch from the Tamron 45 to the Planar 50, mostly because it is the first 50mm lens that I've reviewed that seemed worth the money.

    I do agree that the EVF & LCD screen are very low quality, but that is not the one thing that I find very frusterating about this camera. What frusterates me the most is that it can only hold one set of settings in it's memory at a time, when it should store 2 sets of settings: one for stills, and one for video. For example: I like to shoot my video a little flat so I use the "Cine2" picture profile, but if I switch back to stills I have to turn off the picture profiles or my images will look a little flat and I like the colors to pop in my photos. (This is just one example.)
    Another quick complaint about the a7iii; I usually shoot stills in Aperture Priority mode and the "A" is on the opposite side of the dial from the video icon. So, everytime I want to switch between the 2 dial positions I have to turn the dial 180 degrees.
    It looks like I might be buying a Sony a7RIV in a few months. (I always find it difficult to predict the future, but it could happen.) I know that the RIV has 2 function menus: one for stills, and one for video. Can you tell me if the RIV stores the still and video settings seperately?
    Thanks, Mathew

      Hi Matthew, it seems like a good solution for you might be to program your preferred settings (say for video) to a Memory Position (M1). I have one setup for video, and another for tracking high speed action. You have to save those settings to the memory position, but it would solve your problem
