    I am loving the upgrade from A7iii to the A7IV, the auto focus was a lot more confident in lower light. I use it mostly indoor at restaurant, without external lights. Photos are cleaner both at 1600ISO or so, and it doesn't hunt anymore, which sometimes happens with the A7iii. Might look like not a substantial upgrade on paper, but overall its worth it imo. The rear screen is more trust worthy now too!

    The exposure compensation dial doesn't have a label because you can program it to be anything you like - not just exposure compensation! :) Another great review, thanks.

      I appreciate that, though I still think I would personally prefer to have it labeled. Perhaps it could be included as a decal that could be user installed if that were one's preference.

    Dustin, Thanks for an easy to understand and thorough review. Some would say that watching a review of something you already purchased is just chasing justification. But I learned even more about what may well be my last major photography purchase. I appreciate the "still" (vs video) centric review and am now better prepared to take advantage of the A7 IV's dynamic range aspects when in the field.

    Great review as usual, the part I especially like is the noise performance test in the lens cabinet with existing lighting, to me that gives me much more info on the actual sensor performance than those standard lab test shots, so just that or a simple real world sky picture during a no moon night with ISO 25600, 15 -20 second exposure will offer tons of great info on the sensor. greatly appreciated the addition of that simple test.

      TOTALLY for the video features, especially its superior dynamic range and if you want high quality USB direct livestreaming without overheating; the focus breathing compensation and focus mapping win it for me. This is easily one of the best cameras for livestream, vlogging and talking head content that most UA-camrs have been wanting. I have the Sony Alpha 1 for 8K product shots but will be using the 7IV for run-n-gun livestreaming and vlogging.

    @Dustin , great review as usual, I have some questions:
    The A7III / A7IIIR had a bit short 1/4" screw-mount which could easily be penetrated by a too long tripodscrew. Have the Alpha 1 and 7 IV deeper 1/4"holes?
    The bottom of the A7III was quite vulnerable to water ingres when you put it down on the surface, melting snow etc, has this improved now.
    I noted that while comparing a Sony Alpha 7 III had much more amplification noise compared to the Nikon Z6 when shooting a Milky-way time lapse at -3C in the moutains. Both have the same sensor. Did you have a chance to try this, comparing the A7III to the IV, I ?
    Just shoot at ISO 400 /640 30 second in the dark with a lens cover and it will show up.
    Alain Dyer wrote also about this in his Nikon Z6 review:
    "As I show in my review of the a7III, the Sony also exhibits a purple edge glow in long-exposure deep-sky images, from an internal light source. That’s a serious detriment to its use in deep-sky imaging.
    Happily, the Z6 proved to be free of any such artifacts. Images are clean and evenly illuminated to the edges, as they should be. I saw no amp glows or other oddities that can show up under astrophotography use. The Z6 can produce superb deep-sky images. "
    The Sony is nicer for filming Aurora, slower shutterspeeds of 1/4th sec.

    Canon R 6: amazingsky.net/2021/09/23/testing-the-canon-r6-for-astrophotography/
    I'm currently using the Z6, and modified it to full spectrum. With Nikon you can use (excellent Sony lenses)
    Kind regards, keep on the great job, Samyang is also throwing in a very interesting 135mm f1.8 Bjorn

      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there, Bjorn. Unfortunately my copy of the a7IV was a loaner, so I won't have a chance to do any further tests. I can't really answer the detailed questions about the depth of the 1/4" mount or weather sealing, as those are more internal issues that I can't just observe in normal use.

    Thank you for the excellent & comprehensive review. Question: A number of Sony A7iv owners on Facebook are complaining that the eye autofocus focuses on the eyebrow or eyelash rather than the eyeball. They say that their other Sony A7x cameras don't have that problem (e.g. A7Riii). They post examples where the front of the eye is clearly a bit out of focus. Did you notice this at all with your camera? Thank you.

      Hi Art - I didn't actually observe that myself, so I can't account for the variables that might contribute to anecdotal accounts. As for the subsequent question as to if it could improved with firmware, I think that answer is absolutely yes. Remember that Sony ADDED full time Eye AF to third gen cameras via firmware.

      Having the same issue with my A7IV. Wide open with like a 35 GM and a closer distance it's missing quite often. I believe Sony acknowledged the issue but none is covering this. I also heard that it took a lot of effort to make Sony acknowledge this. It's a real bummer to be honest and hence I hope for a firmware update to fix it.

    In a previous comment regarding overheating concerns & your answer--you mention that you are primarily a stills shooter & that your video test shots were outside in the Canadian winter. So, I want to ask further if you still have the Sony a7iv, have you experienced--since that time--overheating issues which many youtubers & reviewers have complained about? What's the longest run time (video) you've had with this camera? If so, have you received any communication from Sony Corporate regarding new firmware will solve the overheating problems of the Sony a7iv?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому

      I have had an overheating issue when filming in direct sunlight. I've changed the value to allow for high temperatures and haven't had the problem since, but I try to avoid setting up the camera in direct sunlight if at all possible to eliminate the issue.

      @gbwalther3198 2 роки тому

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for sharing your further experience with the a7IV. Wish that SONY would address the overheating issue directly & solve the problem. It seems like that they could, but don't seem to feel an ethical reason as to why they should. The Sony R series cameras and the A1--higher pixel cameras--appear to have overheating issues resolved. Of course, the lower pixel a7Siii and FX3 haven't encountered overheating issues. $2,500 for a camera body (a7IV) is a lot of money. With Sony's ability to design sensor chips, one would think that they would have eliminated overheating issues with all of their cameras long ago.

    Have a A/IV myself, tried with 35mm f/1.4, 55mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, 90mm f2.8 and there are definitely focus-issues. The camera is not permanently front- or back focusing, but even with Eye-AF and AF-C, the selection-algorithm fails. As soon as there are strong (often vertical) contrast areas, or lines the AF prefers to focus on those parts in the frame even with the green focus frame clearly being on the eye. So, the camera is dead sharp, but it "internally" selects wrong parts for adjusting rather than the one in the focus frame. Took some selfies on a tripod, focus clearly on the eye, but often "real internal" focus was on the the black and white hairs of my beard, sometimes back focusing, sometimes front focusing. Hairs distract the camera, but also gray lines on buildings, or vertical borders of doors or windows. It's clearly a flaw in the internal focus selection logic. Had lots of portraits with different very good lenses with slightly blurry eyes but only with this camera (others work fine with same lenses). Hope they come up with a firmware upgrade soon

    I have a slightly off topic experience to relate.
    I purchased two 128gb UHS II V60 SD cards in anticipation of a Sony camera purchase. I received my A7 IV end Dec which included a note that these SD cards would not work in this camera (check the Sony web site for more info) and could be exchanged for new cards free of charge. The old cards were mailed and received by Sony over 4 weeks ago and it has been a frustrating, fruitless experience to get an update on the replacement cards which have still not been mailed back to me. The company (SBE) do not answer their phone, or email and customer service apparently cannot contact SBE either. So I was 4 weeks into a 90 day warranty not able to test some features of this exciting camera (S&Q mode needs faster cards than I have). I purchased a third card, same day delivery from Amazon as a solution, will keep the card as a backup.

      on the same boat. Still on the fence. Selling a7r3 probably regain $1500, then add $1000 for a7 iv. a7r3 's AF for wedding photography is still not reliable enough. So AF performance is main attraction for me. But is it worth $1000? I don't use video mode that often. Smart phone and action camera has much better/faster work flow to push it to social media. The content of the video is far more important than the video IQ.

      @kulmmii The A7IV has been a hit or miss for me doing running dogs, if the eye AF could pick up the eye, the success rate is pretty high, but if the eye couldn't be locked on, the hit rate isn't all that impressive when relying on Tracking, but then it's probably due to the 35-150 I'm using that couldn't quite keep up, so maybe the 70-200GM2 would be much better for these extreme action shots. Other than that, A7IV's eye AF works quite flawlessly in portrait scenarios.

    Does converting RAW's to DNG actually change the image file, when doing these ISO tests ?

    • @elmegade3
      @elmegade3 2 роки тому +2

      My copy of the A7IV delivered files not even close to those he presented here. The noise is way more pronounced and I know of many other people complaining about the same thing. When this camera was released the You Tube elite pushed jpg files (with baked in noise reduction) disguised as RAW output. They started by stating that IQ at higher ISO's was improved compared to the A7III. Yes, when NR was baked in via a jpg file. Lightroom only started to offer RAW support around 5 weeks ago. Intentional or not it is / was definitely misleading.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому +3

      I standardize all of my RAW files to DNG so that comparisons are done more apples to apples, and typically the DNG file format is more efficient (though not as efficient as Canon .CR3 format). As for George's point - it is not possible for a DNG file format change to IMPROVE the original image. I was showing RAW images (in the DNG format) which have no additional noise reduction added, so your claim is false and not misleading. Any comparison of camera I have ever done over the past ten+ years was done with the exact same steps that I demonstrated here.

    • @tebscat
      @tebscat 2 роки тому

      @@elmegade3 I experienced noise with my A7iv, but in understandable circumstances: I was shooting events (a wedding & a naming) in underlit rooms where flash was not wanted, resulting in underexposed photos, in badly lit conditions. I was shooting at 1/200s or thereabouts to freeze motion and ISO 3200 to 6400. There was of course noise, but the underexposures recovered well, and any noise washed out fully with Topaz if I wanted it to. Using Dustin's phrase, the 'global' images looked really good. I don't know of any other camera that could have bettered it. Especially when taking into consideration the marvellous AF.

    Hey Dustin, in your text review you wrote "Viewfinder experience limits the potential of the great autofocus" and "wouldn’t mind a tracking/viewfinder experience more like the Canon R6." And I wanted to ask if you could expand upon that? I wouldn't expect it be like an a9 since that has no blackout at all with its stacked sensor, but how is the viewfinder then for just normal shooting? Like in the case of event shooting, tracking people's faces and eyes at , say a concert - not crazy running around sports action. Does the EVF drop in noticeable resolution or become jittery ever once AF is locked (assuming high quality and 120hz is selected in settings)? Thank you!

      It's weird. The R6 gives you better burst rates, so it is better for tracking action...but not because it has a better focus system. The focus system in the a7IV is excellent, but the burst situation isn't great. I'd probably choose the a7IV unless I needed to track action regularly.

    Thanks another thorough review. I backordered when first announced as I suspected it would prove popular and initially tricky to get hold of given current world supply chain challenges and chip constraints. There really is much to like and overall I'm delighted.
    I will use mine to finally start exploring so called 'convergence' and start learning how to shoot good video, albeit stills is my primary interest. For me main gripe is no included hard copy manual. Their menu system, as most users know, is one of the least intuitive of all main brands. Yes they upgraded and changed the menu, but having eventually got used to the old one find the new version a bit confusing - mostly what is where. Its easy to miss set something accidentally, then waste time trying to correct.
    Sure time using and hands-on experience will eventually cure ignorance and unfamiliarity. But, that's why you should have a paper manual included. I can't easily view the online manual/user guide's small print on a phone screen (when I'm outside, trying to use/learn) and sitting in front of a large pc screen isn't always convenient.
    I have evolved my Sony ownership, overlapping and eventually switching from Nikon. Sometimes owning one, mostly two bodies. Starting with an a6500, I progressed through an a7R3, a7R4, a9 and now an a7iv currently my only body. I sold my a7R4 for many reasons not least seldom needing full size Raw files. Loved the a9 for speed but would have liked a tad more dynamic range.
    I had started to convince myself that an a1 was my best option and a key reason my a7R4 was sold. But the a7iv was announced the following week, it looked so good on paper, with seemingly many a1 features for less than half the cost, so I was sold.
    I'm now trying to clarify if I should buy a second a7iv, an a7Siii, an a1 or wait until something else comes along e.g a7c mkii based on internals of a7Siii or a7iv or maybe even an a1 mk ii? It all depends on how my progression with video goes. I like shooting sport and having sold my a9 just 2 weeks ago feel the need for an a1 more keenly, but in truth have yet to see how well the a7iv copes with real world sports and wildlife use, paired with a 200-600 and mk ii 70-200 GM. Choices, choices - a nice dilemma to have!

    Dustin, great review as always! However, I’m not sure if I missed it, or if you talked about the EVF refresh rate? I never liked the A7III’s EVF, and it’s nice that it at least gets a bump in resolution, but what about lag, or I guess just feeling more “natural” like a DSLR (maybe I’m just getting old lol). I’ve been in a holding pattern for a few years now waiting for Canon to either release an “affordable” FF camera that really gives Sony a run for it’s money (don’t like the R6’s 20mp limitation for $3400), or for Sony to improve certain things in their A7 line (ergonomics and that EV being my biggest complaint). Two completely different cameras. It will depend what type of photography and video are you doing and you're budget. I'm a Sony hybrid shooter and the good thing about Sony is if you don't want to spend much on lenses like the G master at least third party are good enough and more affordable. Canon glad is even more expensive than Sony so, that's another thing to take into consideration. I got the A7IV and is a good camera but lenses will be always more important than bodies.Hope that helps!!!

      @@mattstolzman that’s very unfortunate!And honestly been shooting with Sony cameras for 4 years and that has happened to me with my A6300 only once a while ago. I do have concerns as a freelancer like you that can happen to my A7IV but I cover myself with my insurance just in case.However and at the end of the day, can happens with any piece of tech regardless the brand!! I would base my buying needs to budget and specs that we need to deliver good service to our clients!!Hope that helps!!🙌🏾🙏🏾☺️

      I think this is highly personal, for me, I am using the Sony for landscape only ( to utilize the high DR sensor), but when I shoot handheld, I really don't like how Sony camera body feel in my hand, really uncomfortable even after 6 long years of trying, so if I shoot sports, events, regardless of how the Sony perform in terms of AF. tracking..... it's not the camera of choice for me, and you really have to be careful with Sony in wet condition as well, therefore I went with Z9 instead of the A1, for the same reason I would go with R5 instead of any Sony for any application other than tripod shooting. just a personal preference .

    I bought this body as an upgrade to the A7III, but I have to admit. The cropped 4k60 & the 6fps shooting in uncompressed RAW...... MAJOR BUZZ KILL.
    The only real saving grace for me is the absolutely amazing AF. It's on par with the A9II & A1. But there are so many odd limitations.
    Sony is hawking their CFexpress type A tech, even though Type B is better. I get that this body can't out perform the A1 or A7SIII or A9II, due to economic reasons, but still.... Solid all around camera overall.

      I see little reason to shoot in uncompressed RAW these days when the lossless compressed option exists.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI You're correct there's no need for uncompressed RAW anymore. HOWEVER... Whatever compression algorithm Sony is using in the A7IV, MacOS does not like it one bit (pun intended).
      I can open the RAW files in iPadOS, but not on my desk top. so for me its just another odd annoying limitation.

      Now that's odd. I didn't have any issues on the Windows platform, but you would think that full Mac support would be a priority.

    Low fps rate (+ high price): my show stopper.
    My Fujifilm X T4 misses a lot of shots because the tracking option is almost useless and (face/eye) AF performance isn't great.
    The A7 IV would miss a lot, because it's so slow, although it has great AF and tracking features.

    Very nice review. As always from you🙂. But unfortunately with my a7iv I have front focus on cat, human with eyes AF at close range and fast lenses. The issue is discussed at Dpreview and German Photo Forum. A7iv users report that older models (a7iii/a7riii) have better results in this scenario with eye AF. Fortunately, according to the dpreview comments, Sony support has confirmed the issue.

    As a professional photographer and accredited photo journalist, I have been an avid Sony user since 2015 starting with the Sony a6000, I remained true to Sony using various A7 models of theirs until this year. When the Sony a7IV was presented I was very enthusiastic and ordered one from my photographic supplier.
    However, after researching further I was dismayed to learn that the Sony a7IV would NOT be manufactured in Japan, but in China. For me this was an absolute no-go and I immediately cancelled my order and placed an order for a Nikon instead.
    To make matters quite clear, I have nothing against China nor the people. I have worked in China and found it a very nice country with wonderful people.
    What bugs me are the business owners / corporations who outsource their operations to cheap labour countries, and then throw their products on western markets with western price tags! NOT with me!! 😡
    Sorry Sony, but you have lost a faithful customer just for the sake of wanting to make an extra buck - serves you right!

    I'm dissapointed we didn't hear anything from you on rolling shutter performance or the frame rate limitations of the camera depending on RAW image quality, or any acknowledgement that the video modes that were added have already been present on other cheaper cameras for years. Sony is no longer an innovator at all price points, indeed, they seem to reserve innovation for only their top tier products these days.

      Hi Timothy, a lot of your concerns are focused on the video side, whereas my reviews are more focused on the stills side. I don't pretend to be a top video reviewer. As for the frame rate limitations - I didn't really encounter them. I set the camera to lossless compressed RAW (which would be my file size of choice) and got 10fps. I wasn't able to extensively test sports action (as mentioned in the review) because it was between -25 and -30 C during my entire review period. Not much going on outside.

    12:30 loss of high-ISO performance due to high resolution? Nope, that's a myth. Or are you making the mistake of comparing at 100% instead of comparable size? DPReview debunked this a couple of months ago: ua-cam.com/video/gAYXFwBsKQ0/v-deo.html

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому

      Unfortunately that simply isn't true. I've done many videos on this subject, and while it is sometimes true that downsampled images from high resolution cameras are more competitive, it really comes down the quality of the sensor. The Canon 5Ds/R cameras were terrible even at ISO 6400...and even when downsampled to 20 or 24MP of resolution. The Sony a7RIV is not as good as the A7IV even when downsampled to equivalent resolution. Not a myth...a reality.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you. Please do know that I thoroughly enjoy your reviews. I understand where you're coming from with this. But the fact still stands that the comparison between A7 S-model and R-model done by DPReview in a print shop clearly shows that high resolution negates the so poor high-ISO performance. It's a great example considering the vastly different resolutions. As a further example, the DPR studio shots do indeed show that the noise performance is worse on the higher-resolution model, but switching over from 100% to comparable resolution or print, the noise performance is on par or even better from the higher-resolution model. You mention quality of the sensor, I'd say the key is to compare as similar sensors as possible. Maybe A7RIV and A7IV simply aren't similar enough, and perhaps the same is true for the models in DPReviews test.
