Fishing With MICRO TEXAS RIG For Bass & Bluegill!

  • After my recent ultralight bluegill fishing video, I still had some time on the water and I wanted to mix things up, so I decided to test out a rig I haven't fished with before on ultralight. I had rigged up a micro Texas Rig on one of my ultralight setups and felt this was a good opportunity to build up confidence and determine how I like it. So for about an hour and a half, I exclusively fished with this tiny Texas Rig and wanted to share my experience with you!

    Overall, I felt that the Micro Texas Rig is a great option for light line anglers looking to pull small baits through cover. I was able to land both bass and bluegill on this rig so I trust that the size 4 EWG hook I was using will work well for multispecies.
    My main callouts are rod action and drag settings... When running an ultralight, it will be important that you have a fast action rod to ensure you can drive the hook home on this rig. On top of that, you will need to be extra careful with your drag power. If you go too light on drag, the hook probably won't penetrate. If you go too tight, you may snap your line... Ultimately, you will need to find the "sweet spot" where you can bury the hook but not overdo it.

    WOO! We made it! I was fishing my micro texas rig a couple of days ago for small bass and actually got hits on some holdover stocked brown trout, was very surprising.
    It's really nice, as an ultralight angler, to be able to cast into some of the grass and spatterdock without worry.

    I started fishing texas rigged small plastics years (20ish) ago because of a article in field in stream. The article was profiling the slider company which was brand new at the time. slider had a line of finesse worms and light wire weedless jig heads. similar to the zman offerings today but with lighter wire. They talked about a relatively hard but short wrist snap followed by a longer pull into the fish to set the hook. which served to get a solid hook set on lighter gear and help pull the fish from cover at the same time, as they was focused on heavy wood cover. they also used a slack line hook set. instead of reeling tight they purposely set the hook with slack as a way to get more power to the initial hook set. think they recommended 7 foot plus rods for this as well. big fast sweeping hook set. this only works with 8lb line n up in my experience. any lower and risk of break offs were to high in m opinion.
    Years later and i am completely confident in 6lb fc ml n light rods perfect for this without any change to hook set as long as your drag is set to pull a lil at hookset. i waylay fish like a bass pro flipping heavy cover...lol
    Those slider heads and 3 inch gulp leaches were a headwaters of the james killer!
    Split shot with a texas rigged 4 inch lizard is deadly as would be your 2 inch craw in the river giving its floating aspect.

    Great video and showing another ultralight presentation that's unexplored. We had a good day in IL pond fishing but it looks post spawn or happening right now around us. We wore them out with a Beetle Spin catching fat pre spawn bluegill and bass to 12-13 inches. Maiden voyage for the birthday gift last month from my wife and LOVE IT!! So I wanted to give this method a try myself. I didn't have any #4 Gamakatsu hooks, but I did have some #4 Owner Down Shot Offset hooks I purchased about 15 years ago to fish some Panfish Assassins weightless. (That was a blast! The slow fall and jerk bait style retrieve worked like magic on some fish that just wouldn't bite anything else!) I used those size 4 Owner hooks and you might want to check them out. Not EWG, so smaller and much less of a gap, more like a #2 EWG might be length wise, so they go right through the beefiest part of the Burro but.. I am 3 for 3 on fish that I feel were large enough to actually eat the lure. No problem with hook sets and hooking the fish. The first 2 came on the standard Texas rig retrieve, but I also gave the standard 1/16 jig retrieve a try right at the end of the day. Threw it out, began reeling almost right away, then stopped reeling to let the lure drop a bit. I usually drop to a slow 3 count (about 3 seconds). On "2" of my 3 count I got slammed by a real nice male bluegill. About 6" to 7". I was using old 1/16 oz led bullet weights. Bullet weight profile a bit to large for my liking, but I just got my 1/16 tungsten bullet weights in the mail along with some #4 Gamakatsu EWG's. They're on deck for my next outing to the pond!

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Рік тому +1

      For Crappie, go with the Mule Minnow 2.2. All sizes work but that one seems to be most universal. I’d run a 1/32oz MJ if they are shallow otherwise a 1/16 or 3/32 is great for the slightly deeper waters. All colors work - crappie can be a little picky on colors so I’d recommend experimenting. Looking to get an Abu Garcia Elite Max. Any better suggestions for around the same price? Also any rod suggestions?
    And one last question, are ultralight reels suitable to catch bigger bass with? Or just smaller fish?

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Рік тому

      The Abu Garcia is probably fine but I personally prefer Shimano or Daiwa size 1000 reels for UL. For a rod, I have a plethora of videos reviewing various models. Just depends on your price range. For a budget rod, I like the 13 Fishing Defy Silver. For mid range, I like TFO. For higher price, I love the Dobyns Sierra.
      And I would not recommend actively targeting large bass on ultralight, however if you hook them, you can absolutely still land big fish.

    Why do you swap hands after casting? Unlike baitcasting rods, which more typically are in right-handed versions, you can swap the handle to either side of your spinning reel. I’ve never understood people that play this pattycake game, swapping hands, casting and reeling in, it makes no sense at all.

      I have tried switching to my off hand but it just doesn't feel right. I grew up casting right handed and also reeling right handed. That is what my muscle memory is used to so that is what I stick to. My precision is better with a right handed cast, and my ability to work a lure is better with my left hand. Ultimately, I catch way more fish by sticking to my comfort versus trying to save a split second and cutting down on my accuracy/ability to work a bait.

    Great idea to use micro baits in a Texas rig.

      Definitely not a new idea, but was happy to find hooks that fit so well!

    Embrace the dink 🫂 . Sounds like a fun way to catch fish and as you mentioned for body’s of water that do not have a population of large fish.
