  • When is the Star Trek Discovery Short Trek episode Calypso taking place? The AI Zora says she's been waiting in the Nebula for a 1000 years, so when does this episode occur in the Star Trek timeline and universe? When is Calypso in time?

      I hadn't gotten around to watching this episode until now. This "Craft" person says his enemy was the V'draysh. So...he is talking about the Federation...
      Considering time travel is involved here, Calypso could take place in an alternate timeline. But isn't it also possible that a liberated Zora is what infects Control from a future reality? To stop the V'draysh?
      If that's the case...the Discovery crew are actually in a predestination paradox. Its possible their very existence is what destroys the Federation. Otherwise, I don't think we've been given enough clues to say anything with certainty.

      And so..."The Burn"...is actually Burnham?

    • @StarTrekTheory
      @StarTrekTheory  3 роки тому

      @@wj3186 That would be pretty crazy if the Burn=Burnham, but I could see the producers doing something like that. Maybe it won't be revealed immediately in s3, but with time travel part of the mix there could be a future season where she time travels back and initiates whatever 'the burn's effect is...

      @@wj3186 For sure that episode of Calypso is going to tie in somehow to whatever is happening in S3 - or perhaps its a 1000 years on from S3, which would be even crazier. I liked your idea about the Discovery crew being in a predestination paradox, having them come full circle by the end of the series and maybe we learn that Burnham = the Burn.

      My question is will the USS Discovery come back for a movie set in the 42nd Century after the Calypso story?
      Would the maker of the enigmatic technology that predated even the Proginators themselves and perhaps many more ancient civilizations as described by the Proginator, possibly return to remake the lost gateway or possibly remove the gateway out from the primordial blackhole into space since they are advanced enough to make a tech that survived Billion or even Trillions of Years until the timeline set after the Calypso took place in the 42nd-century timeline and set to make another huge wave all over again. I mean if they are beyond Dimensional Beings their gateway could even survive a black hole and even they as the creator of that technology must still be alive somewhere beyond the multiverse taking their time waiting for another story to take place?
      If the Enigmatic Prehistoric Primordial/Precursor Race was so advanced what technological level would they must have attained? Did they still keep on advancing their technology or did they suffer the same problem as many sci-fi races go through called Stagnation? So many questions to ask, so many questions left un-answered!

    This video is 4 years old? Interesting that we seen now at the end of the series, captain Burnham takes Discovery to this mysterious location to wait for something far into the future. Maybe in order to rescue the protagonist in this short episode. Maybe, he has some very important part to play in his time. I really like this actor and would love to see him leading in a Star Trek series of his own.

    My theory is that the soldier was a prototype for the character that became Booker. The Short Trek showed a future that wasn't to be because of story re-writes. I really liked the story and the universe it hinted at though. I just don't think it'll ever be explained and just sit as an anomaly or a little bit of Star Trek fun just like the episode with the tardigrade and the DOT.
    It's really not necessary that everything fit into place or have an explanation. Sometimes it's nice to just let some things be and enjoy them for what they are.

    My theory for this Calypso Short Trek is this: In another universe, different from the prime timeline, terran or even kelvin ( this Discovery don’t have spore hub). The population of the galaxy had dropped significantly after an unknown event, which make USS Discovery one of the last vessel of the Federation (that’s why after a thousand year, no other vessel spot the abandoned Discovery). On an expedition, all Discovery personel decided to land on the planet nearby and Zora was given order to stay put by her captain. The crew may have accidently enter a time distortion field on that planet which might explain why the anchored Discovery still waiting by the time Zora encounter the escape pod. Forgive me if there’s nothing make sense.

An alternate timeline would have explained away the Klingon time crystal vision that both Reno and Burnham had of Control taking out Disco’s bridge crew and the Enterprise being destroyed. It had to have happened in either a preceding or an adjacent timeline. It’s a bit hard to swallow that the Federation leadership would knowingly watch their galactic alliance devolve into the V’Draysh over the next 1000 years and do nothing other than Daniels/Kovich sending Discovery and Zora to wait a millennium for Craft to cross their path. That’s way too passive for Daniels, given what we know about the character.

    Option 2 and 3 are not possible by the evidence in the short, IMO. After Discovery (NCC-1031) jumped to 3250, it was retrofitted with tech from that era and was re-designated "NCC-1031-A" You can clearly see the absence of "-A" when it is pulling in Craft's ship via tractor beam. This rules out the 4250 (far far future) theory. And since we know that after Season 2 the ship had a full crew compliment before it jumped to 3250, it cannot be the same star ship. Now, Zora only became self-aware after she merged with the Sphere data in 2257 going into the 33rd Century. It is here, it seems, that we have an overlap in continuity. This ship must be on an alternate timeline or mirror universe where the Discovery crew and the Discovery itself carried on in the 33rd Century while the original Discovery got left behind or thrust into another universe. This might explain why there is no crew yet Zora still was able to evolve to sentience post-Control due to retaining the Sphere data. Cheers :)

    Sounds good to me, although I have to admit I struggled to buy the whole 'send it to the future because we couldnt destroy it' premise. Enterprise only fired 2 or 3 torpedos at it before giving up, how blummin strong were the discoverys shields?! The thing was a sitting duck, surely the federation flagship could have just keep firing until it was destroyed?! Failing that a deliberate core breach would have worked!

    • @StarTrekTheory
      @StarTrekTheory  4 роки тому +2

      Haha I didn't get that either... it's not exactly the most logical thing or first thing to come to mind - 'Oh we can't destroy the ship, I know we have to send it to the future' :) I guess their story logic was that the sphere data took over Discovery's computers and wouldn't allow it to self destruct, and the sphere data itself wanted to be shared with any other computers in order to keep that data alive (the sphere creature having wanted to pass on what it learned), so it would have gladly shared with Control... but yeah its all a little convoluted. I have the feeling that in Season 3 we may already get glimpses of an early Zora emerging having fused with that sphere data, which could be nice.

Dont get me wrong, I enjoyed disco, particully the second season, but I really struggle to mentally put it into cannon and line everything up! The ending especially felt reallly lazy, just having star fleet command declare Discovery and the spore drive classified felt like a lazy way to make up for so many elements that felt too advanced for the 2250s and didnt gel with other series!

    • @StarTrekTheory
      @StarTrekTheory  4 роки тому +1

      dr-nerd I have to agree with you. On its own it’s fine as a bit of light entertainment, but it’s still lacking that Star Trek feeling for most of the episodes. There were a lot of really good season 2 episodes which are getting closer, especially Pike himself but also the episode where they found the colony from the wwiii survivors (that episode felt like classic trek somehow). But we almost have to come up with theories just to retcon the series into the franchise. My hope is they will do something like a debilitating computer virus (which is what I thought control would turn into) which essentially forces all tech to devolve so it starts to lineup with the original series retro look... I have to say though I’m rewatching a lot of the episodes for new videos for the channel and it’s a LOT better on a second viewing, especially s1 knowing it gets lighter after all the dark mirror universe stuff. So hopefully if they continue on their path into s3 it will keep getting brighter and more optimistic. That’s my hope :)

    What future knowledge, they were stranded in the future. In order to have future knowledge they would have to interact with whatever civilization is left and gain access to their historical records which no doubt would be sparse and largely fictitious or at least politically and ideologically influenced of anything that happened 900 years ago. Even the continued existence of civilizations are not known to last that long so whatever they interact with may not even have any knowledge of the federation except for a few ruins and relics. There's no indication that returning from being stranded 900 years in the future would give you any useful information of the near future.
    I would also say the second option is the one you would like to be, not necessarily the most probable.

    to be honest that entire short film of calypso never really made sense to begin with. I believe it was just a random put together between seasons that had no relation to anything. There was no explanation to why discovery was just cased out into space to be alone, even in the final episode of the show it wasn't explain. maybe I have to go back a rewatch it. it a red directive, that mean nothing. there was nothing behind that information wise. it just another thing in discovery fashion, just like the whole show, oh we are just doing it for now reason at all. it makes no sense in the end and now they wanted (the creators) to give it meaning. Yeah, that's pretty stupid but expected. the show itself wasn't that great. it did get better at times, but it never truly felt like a real show. Some of the characters were better than others which helped it along, but in the end, I don't see the point to this. If someone out there can explain it to me, please.
