  • One of the most divisive series that Star Trek has ever produced has come to an end, as the finale of Star Trek Discovery has now been released. Since the shows first season, fans of the franchise have both lauded and outright hated this series for various different reasons. I myself have always tried to give Star Trek Discovery a chance, and while I have enjoyed some episodes and new characters I have also been disappointed by the shows inability to complete a season long storyline in a satisfying way. And I have to say, I think the tradition holds true for this final season as well. But there were things that I did like about the finale and the series as a whole.

This didn’t bother me. A computer doesn’t experience time like we do nor does it need company, especially since Zora was roaming the galaxy for millennia before Discovery. It opens the door for us seeing Discovery again. It could even jump back in time.

  • @kanebunce3791
    @kanebunce3791 Місяць тому +14

Michelle Paradise has said in an interview (sorry, I cannot re-find it) that they initially tried various explanations for why Zora was being sent to meet with Craft but that they didn't like the explanations and so stuck with the Red Directive. This is likely a result of the short amount of time they had to turn the final episode of the season into the final for the show. Even if they could have done better with more time to think on it, I still don't agree that the explanation felt force feed.
Also, the Genesis device isn't really that comparable to the tech the Progenitors used since Genesis is a terraforming device, not something capable of creating life on a galactic scale.

Yeah, I hated the Calypso is Cannon aspect, I HATE that they did that. We already had Zora hiding I'm a nebula in the future in the alternate Bren Win timeline, and in Calypso, the sheer horror that poor Zora had to endure such an expanse of time both before and after the one traveller gets moved along is unacceptable!

Have to disagree with the thought that "throwing away the Progenitors tech made the season meaningless". They were never seeking out the tech for themselves, they were trying to prevent Moll & L'ak from finding it and selling it to the highest bidder. They got a peek into the future, in the time bug episode, and saw that the Breen had used the tech to wipe out the Federation completely. They ultimitaly saved the Federation when they instead seized the tech before Moll could and by destroying the tech in the last episode, it prevented that from ever happening to them or anyone else ever again.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, of course…
It is about the journey of self-discovery [“Discovery”] which was the point of the season. Thus, it was not a “waste of time” that the Captain made the decision regarding the Tech. One might always want to ask themselves, “What is the story telling me?”
I get that some of us are more (or, less) in tune with stories of self-discovery… which is likely why some emotionally character driven episodes, seasons and series resonate with some of us more than others, and that is okay. But, the choices the characters make (through the writing and the stories) are meant to touch some of us - sometimes in a deeply personal way. Thus, the question is: Do choices feel ‘earned’? Whereas we as an individual may have felt differently, does a character’s choice ring true for her/him/them…?
Everyone is entitled to an opinions, of course… I wonder how often some of us are willing to look outside ourselves and listen to another’s journey? I just wonder that…
‘Discovery’ was more than a ship, From episode one to the finale, the stories were about self-“discovery”… every episode, every season. Again, that may speak to some of us in different ways than it may some others. It really boils down to what each of us brings to the table… and that is okay, because there are no wrong answers.
    Just my opinion…

The future that Burnham saw wasn't the same as the future that Calypso was set in as Discovery was neat and clean in Calypso and in the episode of Discovery it was a wreck. There is an entire universe to explore which is the point of ST, and this never even tried. With these new long winded story arcs, exploring characters is nearly impossible which has always been Stark Trek's bread and butter. Data, the Doctor, Seven of Nine, et...made good seasons great. Now, you're totally at the mercy of the captain and his/her arc being perfectly written to pull you in. That never came close to happening here. In fairness, Piccard has this same issue.

I felt it finally freed the show from trying to shoehorn the events of Discovery in a Pre-ToS timeline with a marginal (at best) thought of keeping things consistent with what came before. Finally, show was able to live in its own space and Burnham finally got to be Captain instead of simply being a wayward crewman who was by and large was the solution to every dilema. I kinda got what they were doing with the show up until the end of season 3, they made it to the future so now what, and just completely abandoned the original idea of the show, and when it took place... at first. I have a like - hate feeling about the series, and felt they should have stuck with the "Trek formula" that made the other shows great additions to the Trek universe as a whole. Overall looking forward to the new Trek series to come... maybe even be apart of something in the future.

I browsed for this video (or any other like it) so that I have somewhere to express my thoughts as well... I did however after watching it can also "just concur" with the majority of what you've said.
I will however still type it out. First... I actually haven`t seen TNG because for young me back than... TV shows (or at least the ones that were based on "the greater" movie productions) were just too low quality in comparison to the movies. Like "people" based TV shows with good plot, light doable practical effects shows ~yes... But a space saga for TV Air of back than... just (maybe also because the influence of my father`s opinion, very indirectly, but also very on the point) wasn`t something I could spent time on. I practically "began" Star Trek of "Picard`s in Command" and maybe ~than (to the best I remember) seen a Kurk movie here and there over time to "fill in some blanks". Also for a long time I were a bit too Star Wars biased... but it is exactly the TV Shows duking it off in the more recent times that turned me to more balanced ~or centered in between SW/ST.
The whole point of that was to explain why for me that Final was a fresh breeze in terms of "Actually Reaching the Great Power" and giving it all out. It`s been a while since I've seen character that was at least intended to depict the ~confidence and ~well being of mind or the state of it... to reach more power and just let it go. (You've said something similar has been done in TNG, but since I haven`t watched it, I don`t view it that way, thus the intro of my thoughts). Ultimately "the goal" of the series was to "prevent evil coming to the ~galaxy and/or universe", by reaching the life generator device and letting it go ~goal achieved, potential evil exploits of it- denied. I mean one may long argue if to deny power or use it "in favor of good" is the "stronger" decision, I mean one of them have to be ~stronger. That was the choice made here and I think it was good "getting cheesier" prevention at the very least. As for the main character ~as a character she did pick up her pace trough the seasons... and personally won me over as an actress with the Dreads... Short Hair... whatever... Dreads . More on the final`s ~final... Yes for me even right after the end of the technology thing could have ended and it would have been good end. I have practically forgotten about Saru`s wedding... but they showed it... and than... it continued. It was a "closure" so overly crafted I got worried what is going on. I mean showing Burnham in aged stated I assume is the last I will be seeing of those series (even thou I at a certain point there could be a pure Zora + new crew reboot, but that was before you explained that was purely to connect to some mini series I haven`t seen). Didn`t know about ST Academy... Also didn`t know Discovery got canceled so I guess it is as it is. One more thing... Good thing the technology could bring life back... my first thoughts were "Why not bring Georgio back" (but than also by your video I learned she is not dead, Like I don`t remember what happened to her, honestly, but I mean Ghong... that Asian granny, old she is now, no denying it, I have always enjoyed her ever since Crouching Tigger, Hidden Dragon, she also has a Bond movie with Pierce Brosnan. Or why not bring back the android crew member that was so cared about at certain points. Anyways turned out it couldn`t, because it would have been stupid to just revive that alien character.
As for "Strange New Worlds" I appreciate their second in command or security officer or something. She were a Guardian in the Librarians with Noah Wyle. Not a bad TV show for what it was worth ~at all. IDK Picard was actually so so... (according to my memory) maybe as an overall average still better and more stylish because of Picard himself... but Discovery had >higher spikes< at moments... Some of it`s episodes had literal cinematic quality... was one of the first I have seen to match it`s big screen brothers of few years ago. Of course we all know CGI have greatly advanced at all fronts and different fields are beginning to reach "limits" which ones reached eventually end up into "equalization" even thou there always will be things better crafted and more expensive and well thought of than others and they rarely will reside in products intended for "TV" (if we assume TVs are still a thing, considering how they are actually mostly distributed over the internet, so how are they technically ~not internet at this point... doesn`t matter... doesn`t care) I mean I do currently work in partially TV sales (as the hardware devices) and I know for a fact many people obtain all kinds of TVs of all sizes, brands and price ranges... but than again I live in an overall ~10 years ago (at best) technologically wise, on an average societal state (no flame, it`s just as it is, no blame either... if anything I probably shouldn`t have been growing up with a computer since 11 years old for the past 25 years). So when a person that is not much older than I am comes and honestly ask me what a smart TV is (not that I actually really care what it is) I am very uncertain how to think of it. I mean no one is obligated to know it (once again I before i start working selling em I as someone on 6 physical cores and like 12 utility cores didn`t know that`s a thing... like TVs today state on the box "4 Core Independent AI picture improvement enabled" Wtf is that? I mean I assume my meager 3000 series RTX can somewhat do it with the aid of it`s previously described buddy, right? Of course those TVs pack significantly larger sizes than my twin main and side monitors (which are not actually twins by anything but size) and they do state they display 4k... while I am on embarrassing 1080p. Of course I can one day decide, if I save up enough and see how one of those larger babes would display things hooked to my rig (I still have a free port on my RTX). Maybe Discovery will be even more mind blowing than... it probably honestly will (visually wise). I won`t go into stuffs like response times and Refresh Rates (my two old monitors are actually also decent modern TV comparable to that as well...) Best I can say is think they are not Qleds as those TVs (not that I have an idea if the previously slightly more priced solution was/is better and got displaced by Led/Qled pricing alone). Also I am not saying top actual PC qled monitors/displays aren`t better than what I have... they just require 4000 with a higher 2nd to last number than mine RTXes and those are ~pricey and as you might have by now realized... I can`t afford "the actually good stuffs". I don`t think I will watch this Fleet Academy... Tilly isn`t strong selling point... Oh... Also also... Good Final showdown for Reynard. I really liked his performance as a character and probably actor. He was a good "passenger" on those final steps for this TV show.

I wondered that too. Also, Burnham said to Zora that she and "the crew" would leave Discovery there. What crew? Burnham was all alone on the bridge. Which actually sums up the series nicely - no matter how many times it preached about teamwork and unity, it was always The Michael Burnham Show.

@@marlaerwin3610 Fair assessment. For a show that was really on the ship USS Diversity, they gave zero shits about the supporting cast and developing them deeper. They just kept trying to get as many different nationalities on the bridge as they could, even kicking off existing bridge crew this final season to accomplish that. Pointless trying to be so diverse in cast when the only effort to showcase diverse characters was given to the gays and trans characters, and ultimately, that was this shows undoing, too heavy handed shoving that down our throats to make up for previous ST shows ignoring their existence at all.

So pleased it's over. I tried to like it but it never felt "Star Trek." Most of the primary characters are so flawed I don't care about them, at all. It's good TV, in terms of current trends for darker story telling and long story arcs, but it really helps if you can find a character or two to enjoy.

I thought the resolution of the of the progenitor tech was good, it was reasonable and unexpected. They did complete half of the objective though, they kept the Breen from getting it. I hadn't watched the short treks, but I have watched that one now. The ending was a red directive. So agent Daniels must know that Zora is needed in the future to save that person. He must be important. Maybe we'll find out some day.

I have to be honest I didn’t like the season finale. Yes, I did pick up. It was a throwback to Indiana Jones in the last Crusade, especially when they were in the portal environment I thought that was kind of cool. I like the marriage of SIRU and Trina that was great. They could’ve ended it with Burnham and book on the beach, confessing their love for each other. Finally, we didn’t have to have the last part of that. I thought that was too much subterfuge for me. if I were to give this a overall grade for the entire 65 episodes I would have to give it a C minus as a show overall, the writing I would have to give it an F, the directing a B+, the acting. My favorite characters are Philippa Georgia, SIRU and Tilly. I really did not like the captain of the ship. I felt like you could hardly hear her when she was speaking. I had to turn my TV up way loud and order to hear them talk that, how low it was. I felt like I was in a graveyard at a funeral somewhere because you had to turn it up in order for you to get some brightness because it was too dark and jury, too depressing and pessimistic. I did enjoy it when they were in the 22nd century or 23rd century once they got to the 32nd century I just didn’t feel it was that great of a shout. Plus, they changed showrunner so many times the direction of the show was all over the place, the wasn’t there. The character structure wasn’t there. The character arts went there it was just a complete mess. I give it to the cast for being able to get through 65 episodes in five seasons, but they just had terrible writers and I don’t think I’ll be watching star Academy. I’d rather watch vision from Terry Metis than that show that’s for sure, all good things, the final chapter, and the last generation was my favorite endings to next generation, DSI and Star Trek card season three. I really did not have any tears over this show at all. I just can’t wait for it to end. that’s how much I dislike this last episode I put it in the same category is the final episode for Voyager in the final episode for enterprise. By the way, I did like Philip Georgia as captain of the discovery she rocked.

I think SMG is amazing--love watching her as captain. I agree the season endings in STD rarely hit the mark (ending of S3 just f'd what could have been the best season ever, IMO). the Calypso epilogue...I have mixed feelings: on one hand, it shows us that MB and B live happily ever after. OTOH, it raises more questions unless they follow up with some additional story about Craft. The only thing truly disappointing is that near the season climax, when the crew is in the middle of a crucial mission, they will stop and have a heart to heart discussion about their childhood, their feelings, or something...hey folks, that's not professional!

Completely agree with your critique. This variant of Star Trek has consistently focused more on being woke than it has on good story lines. As you noted character development has some bright spots, but the preachy style of Discovery has made it nearly unwatchable at times.
The destruction of the progenitors technology was entirely predictable early on, and similar plot lines have been done in the past in countless movies and television shows to make the star character appear more wise and noble than the other characters, albeit self-aggrandizing. Most notably in 1956’s Forbidden Planet, when Dr. Mobius, played by Walter Pigeon, decided for all human kind that they were not ready to have the knowledge of the krell, and it was ultimately destroyed.
It is completely unbelievable that the Federation after spending so many resources and risking so many lives to obtain the technology would on Burnham’s whim quickly agree to destroy it in a black hole. It was a cheap and cliche way to end the season.
This entire series focuses on diversity, equity and inclusion, yet it is okay for one person to make a decision that impacts all life in the galaxy? Strange New Worlds is a much better series as you noted.

Totally disagree with your assessment of the finale. Totally support your right to not like it but your main premise is faulty. Throwing away the progenitors tech did not invalidate the quest nor the season. In fact we saw what would have likely happened if the Breen had gotten their hands on it. Preventing that saved the Federation. The saucer sep, spore drive jump of the Breen ship to the Galactic Barrier was bad ass and the culminating redeeming act for Commander Rayner who's circumstances mirrored Burnham's own redemption. Tying up the Calypso thread means the Disco crew moved on and lived out their natural lives, having 'retired' Discovery, but leaving her/Zora a possible future as a sentient ship. All in all, vastly underrated by you imo.

I thought it was pretty obvious that the Progenitor tech was radically different from Genesis. But I mean if you think it's the same thing then why is it a mistake to toss one into a black hole if you already have a functional equivalent?
I'm not really sure how else it could have possibly ended anyway since the Trek universe is already teeming with life. Like what would they do if they kept it, make every planet they visit have life, the same as it always was with every planet they visited? There's like nowhere you can take that story if the Federation gains the ability to seed the universe with life, you'd have to just file it away to make an easter egg in some Trek series 20 years from now.

The writers had five seasons to get to grips with Burnham, and completely failed. She's both the worst captain, and the most poorly written captain in Star Trek canon; seriously, had anyone in the writers room ever actually observed a moment of real human growth? Burnham as a character had more or less exactly the same issues as Captain Marvel. She 'earned' nothing.
They lured me in with the Progenitors for this final season, only to pull a retcon bait-and-switch at the end with the story. They could have done with pulling in some actual sci-fi writers at some point - maybe then they could have done the promise of the premise justice. The 'pseudo-religious awakening' the Doc made no sense at all; I'm fairly sure that even back on DS9, they'd have explained it as a subconcious imprint after the Trill ceremony and that would have been that. A doctor that qualified would not have been so dumbfounded.
Thankfully the supporting cast made it watchable, but I'm glad it's over.

I agree with your comments Eric. This entire series has been such a dissapointment. When they base an entire season on one story arc, and when the story arc is not interesting, then the whole season is a flop. What I dislike the most is how they have turned the future that Roddenberry created with optimism and hope into a distopian one with the Burn. All that was great about Starfleet during the TNG era was decimated by a tantruming kid!? It's just sloppy writing - reminds me of unsophisticated SF story lines by a seventh-grader. And I'm really disappointed that the new Academy show is based *still* in this time period. And the character of Burnham?! She started off being Vulcan-like, logical and reasonable. Then on a dime, she became the most emotive character ever. There was no 'character growth'. It was just lacking coherence in the writers room! I had high hopes with this finale, hoping that it can redeem something that was achingly missing throughout the series. But again, such lazy sloppy writing. To just throw the progenator technology away after a whole season working for it? It's like saying to the audience who was vested on the ride: "so long, forget about it! It doesn't matter." I'm a life-long Star Trek fan. And I was so happy to learn that this Star Trek show was cancelled! Now it can free up room and budget for the possibility of Legacy.

First she goes to place before Captain Kirk died helping Captain Picard. In the mirror world.Years later. Imperial Georgio goes to her private dungeon to check on Captain Kirk now years older. Still cute. She wants Captain Kirk to help her change the mirror universe. Because the mirror universe in the year of Discovery. Was worth off than when Discovery went 900 years in the future. They still hadn't found the reason for the dial lithium crystals to malfunction. It's not the same as Discovery Star Trek.😊

IMO Seasons 2 and 3 were the best of the five. The series has been plagued by inconsistent writing, spotty character development and too may ephemeral characters who came and went without explanation. That being said I also think the series will be remembered for the sets, the location shooting, the VR wall and the special effects. Considering Kovich's long career it's not implausible that he has something to do with the future events of the Short Trek. He gives Burnham that Red Directive device or whatever it is. Burnham mentions to Zora that she heard a name, which turns out to be the name of the person who finds Discovery in the future. I think they may be setting up a story that fleshes out the Short Trek. The question is which series could they pick up that story line? Maybe another Short Trek?

The genesis device, as incredible as it is, was not an editor like this technology is made out to be. The progenitor said they could recreate a being identical to L'ak, but without its memories. Meanwhile the Genesis device always seemed like a "life bomb" to me, AND it was a failure. It makes total sense for the Federation to keep trying at it, but they had a long way to get to what this is proposed to be.
Maybe they should have SHOWN us the technology at work, instead of just hanging the gun on the wall.
